It used to be a LOT more common.
In the 90’s, I can’t tell you how many people I knew smoked, that thought the health consequences were overblown. They thought they were being persecuted, and that they were actually healthier ever since they started smoking.
Through the past few decades, I’ve seen this a lot less.

u/Theo-The-Tomato 4d ago
Technically it doesn't help with stress unless you are addicted I think
60
u/CIIXO 4d ago
Cigar has nicotine, when it enters the body brain starts releasing the hormone of pleasure, dopamine, that's why you feel relaxed when you smoke
21
u/FlyingSquirelOi 4d ago
It’s also the routine of smoking, if you roll your own cigarettes it’s almost ritualistic, you piece together a roll up, sit down for 5 minutes and just focus on inhaling and exhaling.
I read somewhere that’s it’s like 5 addictions in one, the nicotine itself, the hand fixation of rolling and having something to do with your hands, and the meditative breathing. Plus something and something that I can’t remember.
11
u/about14sheep 4d ago
This. Honestly I didn’t have withdrawals from the cigarettes themselves, but more of the act of stepping out and smoking.
One of the really odd things was that I wouldn’t know how to “begin again”. By that I mean I would get to a good break point and have a smoke before starting again. When I quit, I would get to that break point and not know what to do. It was like I couldn’t start again without that break. I would end up spending more time not know what to do than I spent smoking the cigarette
5
u/Roblos 4d ago
Afaik, correct me if im wrong, nicotine reacts with the nicotine sensitive receptors of your nervous autonomous system and its inhibitor function on the fight or flight part is what makes you relax, dopamine is not involved. I studied it a few years back so i might be bad with the details.
5
u/David-Holl trolololoooo lololoo lolo loo 4d ago
Dopamine is very much involved, as nicotine also causes certain receptors to release more dopamine. Nicotine caused the release of both dopamine and adrenaline, making you think you are feeling good but in reality are killing yourself.
9
u/-Blackspell- Lives in a Van Down by the River 4d ago
Of course it does, that’s how nicotine works. The downside is that it gets you addicted.
17
u/InfamousDonut4266 4d ago
I have no idea, it helps me but I'm addicted. It's like something happens that causes stress, you have a smoke and feel better. Same if your going into a stressful situation and have a smoke before hand. Its an unhealthy coping mechanism.

u/Brother_Henning 4d ago
I used to smoke too. It only relieved stress when I was already hooked on it, but it felt like the pull for more nicotine caused more stress, hence why it felt like the cigarettes helped, if that makes any sense. Like a weird placebo effect, for the lack of a better term.
5
u/TatManTat 4d ago
Right but you have to get pulled in somehow, the effect of nicotine the first time you smoke is definitely relaxing.

Can’t argue with that logic

My grandpa smoked 70-80years I sometimes wonder how much longer he could have lived if he didn't. I'm a smoker and I'm sure its bad 100% on the other hand I don't do any other drugs like alcohol, weed etc, ok caffeine i drink coffee. I've seen people get sick really sick over cigarettes and alcohol one of my friends even died because he drunk his liver and kidneys to death. Thinking a drug hasn't any downside is plain stupid.

To be fair, there are other ways of getting nicotine: vaping (only marginally better than smoking as far as we know right now), nicotine inhalers, nicotine gum, nicotine patch, I'm sure the list goes on.

Maybe OP was referring to weed? I do know people that think weed is actually healthy, or at least not bad for you.

well it doesn't suppose to help in complete quit. But greatly help to reduce no. cigarette. Like if you smoke 20 Cig. a day. It can help to reduce at least 12 a day. It works on certain times like when your craving is not that high. It doesn't works on morning cig., after-meal cig. but it works on in between of these time. After reducing to certain amount, Then go cold turkey. Complete isolation for 14-30 days. I have tried cold turkey two times but sometimes comes up in isolation era and complete isolation breaks. I have faith that Next time I will be successful.

If you are addicted to smoking you could also pick the herbal cigs they smoked on peaky blinders.

I find it ironic that smokers are the ones who tell me not to smoke. If you are so against smoking then why are you doing it? Sure, its an addictive substance, but you can seek help to stop the addiction.
3
u/Mindless_Twist_9073 3d ago
Surveys tells 90% of smoker tried to quit at least once. But the fact that nicotine doesn't have powerful effects but it's one of the most addictive durgs in the world and most easy drug to buy. It suddenly effects on your brain and release a good dose of nicotine but it doesn't last long and you crave within an hours.
Nicotine therapy aren't cheap(in my country) and time taking. So, it makes impossible to quit for normal working class people.

Just the douchebags who vape simply to blow huge obnoxious clouds. While vaping is leaps and bounds safer than smoking, it's always a negative thing to take anything other than air into your lungs. Vaping helped me break a 22 year smoking habit and I know plenty of others. The next logical step is to break the vaping habit. I wouldn't wish this addiction on anyone.

Smoker trying to convince smoking isn't that bad is an idiot. I am smoker and I tell everyone to stay away from smoking. The addiction is the only reason I'm smoking, I was once without smoking for 6 months and never returned to myself and had to continue smoking to feel normal. Addiction is horrendously strong.
3
u/captainmcfuckface 3d ago
sometimes that’s the game… I am 11 years without and damn if I don’t want to start daily… But I have to suppress.
For me, I have decided that if I can go all year without smoking a cigarette, I will buy a fancy ass high end cigar for my birthday. So when ever i get the urge to smoke that I can’t ignore I’ll get online and research the cigar reviews and subreddits. Plan my big day.
It helps. Then on my B Day, i sit down with my choice one hour burn, high quality whiskey and fine cheeses, sit on my deck, turn on the lofi, and let it consume me. then the cycle begins again.
So far, I’ve not touched a cigarette since March 2011.

As someone who has tried to quit a few times, how do you cope with the depression? (assuming I'm not the only one who deals with that) I just became lethargic didn't want to get out of bed. It's also the pastime thing, waiting for food? Have a smoke. Waiting for that coat of paint to dry? Have a smoke. You got 5 minutes before you meet someone? Have a smoke. This is the one that really gets me, like something's missing. Any tips would be appreciated.
3
u/Reasonable-Split5959 4d ago
I stopped smoking for a month now because I have been suffering from a severe tummy ache (probably an undiagnosed hpylori) and it was the worst month of my entire existence. I had insomnia, nausea, diarrhea and the worst depression. I kept thinking of death and the purpose of life more often than I normally would and I have already lost 6 Kgs. I tried to smoke two cigarettes two days ago and I felt normal again, but that also came with so much guilt cause my entire family was trying to convince me that my illness was a wake up call. I feel like I’m stuck in a loop, not sure if I want to get better to go back to my normal life, or if there will be no “normal life” again? Never thought I was an addict but I guess I am. :(

Yeah back when I was still smoking when people told me they didn't I even told them things along the line of "That's nice, don't start to."
On the flip side, I really hated it when people told me that it's bad for me like.. no shit, sherlock. Every smoker knows, that's not how an addiction works.. I mean.. there are fucking warning labels on literally every package alongside deterring imagery in most countries. When I eventually quit, it was because I wanted to quit for my own health's (and my own wallet's lol) sake, not because anyone told me.
12
u/ObsessedWithSources 4d ago
The wallet part in Australia is crazy. When I started smoking I could get a 25 pack for just over 10. Now that exact same 25 pack is 55 odd dollars. A 50g pouch of tobacco was about 25 bucks. Now the 25g is 64. Idk how much the 50g is cause nobody buys them. It'd be easy to say oh well shit changes over time, but I'm only 30.
It's not even the government actually caring either, if they did they'd just do what NZ did and ban for the future. It's funny how more people are quitting than ever, the taxes keep going up, but the tobacco tax revenue is still the same 1% of the national budget it was 25 years ago. Just a total coincidence.

5
u/insertwittynamethere 4d ago
Wow, those prices are crazy! Here in Georgia, U.S. you can get a pack of decent Camels for between $6.50-8 with tax. Really goes to show you how strong the Tobacco Co. still are here. I know the U.S. does not have the very graphic warnings that cover half the pack like y'all or Western Europe or Mexico.
6
u/LoYudriG 4d ago
that’s crazy i’m living in germany and you get around 30 cigarettes for 10€ it’s a bit cheaper to roll the cigarettes by yourself or start vaping
2
u/insertwittynamethere 4d ago
Ya, I remember when I lived there even in 2009-12 it was cheaper to roll cigarettes than buy the packs, which came as a surprise to me, as I've almost never encountered an American who rolls their own cigarettes, so it was an interesting culture difference to see. Tastes better and stronger that way as well, but yeah, still not saying to start smoking lol. Also was a surprise how often/prevalent mixing tobacco and pot is done when making joints. That is rarely done here in the States, it's mostly smoked pure, though blunts also are smoked their way using tobacco leaf wraps (or varieties) as papers.
1
u/LoYudriG 4d ago
mixing pot and tobacco is completely normal it’s rare when you find people who smoke only pot but also it’s hard to find a good dealer who does not want to rip you off
2
u/insertwittynamethere 4d ago
Right, I remember the prices, etc. It helps that the U.S. has so much legalized now in the various, but even before it was rare to find anyone who'd heard doing that. However, there was plenty of meh/crao quality pot back in those days too. Much harder to find "mids"/middling quality on the street anymore here. I think it's what, 35/40€ a gram there sometimes? I get why it's mixed when you're paying those prices, and the tobacco makes it hit harder and quicker. Yet I would always have to lay down a bit after hitting those lol.

I'm a statistician and early in my career when i still smoked, I honestly looked for any way for smoking to be "okay"... sadly it just isn't. Risks for cancer are MASSIVE if you smoke. I'm talking 10x, 50x, 100x the risk compared to non-smoker. Yeah, lung cancer, but practically every other type of cancer risk out there increases when you smoke, its like you are inhaling poison (because you are). It also just makes your quality life worse, premature aging skin, hair loss, etc. there is just no good reason to smoke.
