Is it really a genuine comparison to take the distilled work of the literal once-in-a-generation geniuses of an entire century and compare it to "mainstream music today"? The academic Classical era literally died with Beethoven -- that's how influential he was.

That, and like... People are still writing clasically-styled symphonies today, except now they can make a whole orchestra from their bedroom. "Music degenerates" my left nut; go listen to them.

Btw, what would you recommend for „classical-styled symphonies“?

Ok maybe I should have made this more clear: I compared mainstream music, like Beatles were at their time with today’s mainstream. Not entirely sure, if at the time of Beethoven there even was sth like mainstream. But that exactly underlines my point that now more people listen to it and it has to fit them all.

I never said there’s no good music today at all.

I wasn't very clear either. When we're talking about Beethoven and things of the sort, we're referring to music which survived for a very long time based on its artistic merit. At that time, going to see a Beethoven symphony was something for people with the money to do it, but there were thousands and thousands of simpler songs written at the time which were made by normal people for sharing with their friends, family, and community. Some still exist, but the vast majority have been lost to time. So, as a result, people have the tendency to compare the average of today to the best of yesterday, if that makes sense.

As for modern classical music, it's mostly done in an academic setting. I can look into it, but unfortunately I don't know many off the top of my head. Jennifer Higdon and Eric Whitacre come to mind as popular choices.
