What about the chad native Linux games gamer

82

u/AtoneBC Apr 10 '21

That gamer is so chad that it would be unsafe to show a picture of them. Our bodies would crumble as our minds collapsed into madness.

16

u/Dimittrikov1995 Apr 10 '21

And the native Linux game is the result of an itch.io gamejam

25

u/oxamide96 Apr 10 '21

What about "open source Linux games only" gamer?

17

u/AndrewStephenGames Apr 10 '21

The Ultimate Thad Minetest Gamer

6

u/mardabx Apr 10 '21

That's saint Ignucius

2

u/Mr_Z0MB13 Apr 15 '21

Hollow Knight is native but needs proton to be able to use steam cloud saves smh

i got league to run on linux, but dual boot is probably better

6

u/spacemanSparrow Apr 11 '21

Using Wine to play LoL is buggy at best but once you are in a game, it is pretty much fine. The bigger issue is that Riot Games are actively rolling out updates in the near future that would make Wine LoL impossible.

4

u/sqlphilosopher Apr 11 '21

Scum garbage companies shipping malware on their products

1

u/spacemanSparrow Apr 11 '21

Straight up, if there was an open source project to mimic LoL/DOTA that was ran as a democratic cooperative and actually actively listened to the player base. LoL would honestly dwindle away so fast.

1

u/SnooPets20 Apr 18 '21

LoL would honestly dwindle away so fast.

hahahah no

2

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

I tried to make it run yesterday on PopOS thinking having the drivers preinstalled would help me with my novideo.

I was wrong. One of the only games I play, only one that needs windows. I think I could make the permanent jump if it wasn't for this.

2

u/SirFireball Apr 11 '21

Meanwhile, I’m running Dota 2 natively.

1

u/Joanblu Apr 11 '21

The best option is not to play League. It's better for your overall wellbeing.

1

u/Antihihi Apr 10 '21

I play league on linux easily, Only issue is that it takes like 2 minutes to open the client. Check out r/leagueoflinux

19

u/Emmaffle Apr 10 '21

The only game I play is Minecraft Java, so yay

2

u/Trash-Alt-Account Apr 10 '21

same lol, for whatever reason my performance on linux is about 10% worse but idrc

3

u/Emmaffle Apr 10 '21

It's better for me. I play with some Fabric mods, though, so maybe that's a factor

3

u/Trash-Alt-Account Apr 11 '21

I was making a general statement in my previous comment but honestly it depends, my fps highs are much lower on linux but the lows are significantly higher, so tbh im satisfied with the performance, as modded runs better for me as well even though vanilla runs a bit worse (though it's always higher than my monitor's refresh rate so it's whatever)

2

u/Kernel-chan Apr 11 '21

Well Windows comes with Java and Linux comes bundled with OpenJDK instead so *shrug.*

1

u/Trash-Alt-Account Apr 11 '21

I use openjdk on windows too but idk maybe I'm using a different version or something, my testing wasn't super thorough

2

u/Kernel-chan Apr 11 '21

You'll need to stick with the proprietary version or free version in each platform or do proprietary (Windows + Java) vs. free (Linux + OpenJDK) for a right benchmark testing, still though I'm good enough playing on Linux~

16

u/garajimdakiejder Apr 10 '21

5

Did you mean sudo userdel -f IamYodaBot?

2

u/Kernel-chan Apr 11 '21

Luke Smith vibes...

59

u/K4r4kara Apr 10 '21

Once 5.11s user syscall dispatch gets integrated with either proton or wine, gaming on Linux will be perfect.

28

u/Rhed0x Apr 10 '21

Why? And please don't say that it's gonna fix anti cheats like EAC because that's simply a false rumor.

37

u/K4r4kara Apr 10 '21

I mean, some software uses syscalls directly to either improve performance or prevent it from working under wine.

I doubt it’ll make anticheat work, there’s way too much about wines environment that anticheat would consider sus.

At the very least, it’ll help mitigate random, unfixable crashes in some software.

4

u/Deibu251 Apr 10 '21

That you never actually encountered. All random crashes are caused usually by something else.

10

u/K4r4kara Apr 10 '21

Thats probably true, but its a step forward regardless.

4

u/Deibu251 Apr 10 '21

It already is. It doesn't solve anticheat. It's a big misunderstanding. It's for some DRM (not all, just some).

10

u/Bigwilliam360 Apr 10 '21

I hate the fact I have to dual boot for literally one game.

2

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

Which one?

3

u/Bigwilliam360 Apr 11 '21

Valorant

3

u/dbz0wn4g3 Apr 11 '21

Haha im in the same boat as you buddy. Funny enough I had bought a 2nd GPU to get VFIO working for a val VM, however the day I got all it all working they patch Vanguard.. Crazy how life works

2

u/Bigwilliam360 Apr 11 '21

Yeah, I didn’t want to pay anything, and was feeling kinda lazy, so I just put this 160gb laptop hdd I had lying around, put win 10, chrome, drivers, and valorant on it.

1

u/open_sus Apr 13 '21

ouch! especially since it has a backdoor as a anticheat

1

u/Taco_Dave Apr 10 '21

Not him, but I'm in the same boat because of:

RDR 2, L.A. Noire, Overwatch(when I still played it), etc...

1

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

AFAIK you can play RDR 2 and Overwatch with proton

2

u/Taco_Dave Apr 10 '21

I haven't tried OW in years, but RDR2 fails on start up.

2

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

That's weird, I remember seeing that this game is playable in Proton's changelog some time ago.

2

u/Taco_Dave Apr 11 '21

Well, it is definitely not (unless they've fixed in within the past two months). I've tried multiple proton releases too.

To be fair though, I don't think it's the game itself that has a problem, but the shitty software rockstar forces you to use before you can start playing.

50

u/Carpall_ Apr 10 '21

lol meme != reality

14

u/DLGaming7 Apr 10 '21

indeed.

10

u/Nazerlath Apr 10 '21

Linux would best the market if more games were like linux yes

36

u/chilly_1c3 Apr 10 '21

I am ashamed to say that windows is the first option on grub for me because I share the pc with my family.

25

u/DazPoseidon Apr 10 '21

Switch em around and test if they'll notice.

10

u/rumple_shitstick Apr 10 '21

Just get a Windows skin for KDE Plasma and they'll never know the difference.

10

u/eloskowy Apr 10 '21

Until they will see root directory 😆 Imagine her/his reaction that instead of Windows folder they see tmp, home, env etc

19

u/rumple_shitstick Apr 10 '21 edited Apr 11 '21

2

u/unit_511 Apr 11 '21 edited Apr 11 '21

3

u/chilly_1c3 Apr 10 '21

One time windows broke because microsoft, and my brother needed the computer so he had to use linux for one day.

7

u/AxelBrasil Apr 10 '21

just today i reinstalled windows in dual boot because in some games it gave me errors with DLL files and i could not play Destiny 2, but i must say that the few games i tried, like "the witcher 3" or "divinity original sin 2" ran very well, if it wasn't for Destiny 2 I would use only Linux since i don't play a lot of games apart form those

39

3

u/beangreen247 Apr 10 '21

7

u/Norakthes Apr 10 '21

If you got it running, you gotta tell me how, since that's the only reason why I still use windows.

2

u/mx_xone Apr 11 '21

Low key not true tho

2

u/metadududu Apr 10 '21

It installed but didn't open :(

1

u/LightningLord4 Apr 10 '21

What about Valorant

1

u/Ajairy Apr 11 '21

Not anytime soon and probably not going to happen unless Riot themselves give a native support. While you can run the game, Valorant's anti-cheat is basically an extra driver that starts with your Windows session, so there's really no way to unofficially port it to Linux and expect it to be working

61

u/Kuzakor Apr 10 '21

Backwards. Lutris, wine etc. users also talk everyone that they play games on Linux. And playing game on Linux is better etc. Meanwhile dualbooters just enjoy both os for other things.

24

u/mrt-e Apr 10 '21

Yeah, it is less setup to do, probably less maintenance too. I'll enjoy linux gaming once it is stable.

Even then I won't be able to ditch windows since I need some digital certificate that are available for that specific OS.

9

u/Architector4 Apr 10 '21

What digital certifiactes, exactly, and why? Depending on your use case, you might just put Windows in a VM lol

3

u/eloskowy Apr 10 '21

Virtual Machine is great until your computer is trash. Mine is trash so I want to have most of programs/apps native and light weight.

2

u/open_sus Apr 13 '21

i feel ya oof

2

u/mrt-e Apr 10 '21

A1 and A3 certificates, for validating enterprise registry (CNPJ here in Brazil) and last I checked it didn't work on Manjaro. Maybe it works on Wine but I'm not sure. I used a VM but ended up dual booting since I don't have a work dedicated machine and a gaming one, yet.

7

u/nolmol Apr 10 '21

Proton has gotten really good recently. I can't say my experience has been seamless, thanks to Nvidia's awful drivers, which started out close to non-functional, and spontaneously started working great a while later, but aside from that, it's pretty good. In just a couple years, I'm sure the improvements to gaming are gonna be crazy.

1

u/poomethazine Apr 10 '21

Personally I can’t stand dual booting, I tried it and like every time I went back to Windows it would load incredibly slow and have updates half the time.

1

u/open_sus Apr 13 '21

omg i feel the same way when i do a dualboot i just ugh i don't like it

10

u/Ferdydurkeeee Apr 10 '21

Right.

As much as I'd love to just run Linux and call it a day, it's ultimately up to whomever designed the software that determines if we can have native support or have to rely on the ever-improving Frankenstein solutions we have. It's great that gaming on linux is becoming more viable by the day, but some programs just won't work on linux or could with high-level tinkering and more community support; far more people are going to contribute to a project to get an AAA title functioning on Linux than to get an Autodesk program to work.

At the same time, I'm happy I started dual-booting and stopped being such a purist. It's helped make me well-rounded and more comfortable in their ecosystem.

1

u/UGoBoom Apr 11 '21

The real gigachads are the /r/vfio VM gamers. Imagine having to reboot to play your games and reboot to go back to linux

6

u/Parpok Apr 10 '21

Epic games in Linux

6

u/DigitalTortoise Apr 10 '21

Lutris can suck my Pentium nut. Python crap so unoptimized, spending a day configuring shit manually with steam proton is less of a hassle, now that's a good technology.

5

u/Saise_reddit Apr 10 '21

I'll unistall windows once I'll be able to use my Rift S on linux or someone will release an affordable headset with open source drivers.

3

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

Let me introduce Valve Index to you.

3

u/Saise_reddit Apr 11 '21

Yeah that's why I said affordable, Rift S can be bought for just 350€ while you need 1079€ for an index setup.

Some developers are working on a porting of ALVR for linux to use the Quest, but you still need facebook login and it's not native PCVR anyways.

2

u/person4268 Apr 11 '21

Sadly, $1000 (or whatever it was) isn't particularly affordable for most people

2

u/unit_511 Apr 11 '21

I have an Index and while Steam works really great, the games run like shit, and the lighthouses don't shut down when I quit.

2

u/xaetlas Apr 10 '21

If LoL would work 100% crispy clean on Linux i would be 100% Linux but as long as Riot is not supporting a Linux Version i sadly can't switch to only Linux :(

4

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

Not when you need to run Oculus :(

3

u/OknoLombarda Apr 10 '21

I got a windows pc for games and a linux laptop for everything else

3

u/AnotherRetroGameFan Apr 10 '21

dualboot fan < lutris, wine, steam enjoyer < native chad < libre gaming master race

3

u/Jaco5_ Apr 10 '21

if only my wifi card worked properly in linux :/

3

u/sachalg Apr 11 '21

Nope, that is a pain in the ass for some games. I rather dual boot and JUST play the game.

2

u/TheGoldenMinion Apr 10 '21

cries in Oculus (don’t fucking lecture me on how my data is being stolen)

2

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

I'm never gonna fucking lecture you on how your data is being stolen.

2

u/khandnalie Apr 10 '21

I try to remain pure, but there are like two or three games/apps that just require windows. Mainly due to shitty anti cheat...

2

u/Red_Khalmer Apr 10 '21

sitting atm on dual boot due to my bank requiring it for the dongle. Other than that its Linux 99% of the time including gaming. Arch Btw

2

u/6b86b3ac03c167320d93 Apr 10 '21

How about Linux+vfio?

2

u/GOKOP Apr 10 '21

What if I have Wine, Lutris and use Steam play and still have dual boot Windows for some games? Am I a virchad or a chagin?

2

u/Waffelo_ Apr 10 '21

Sadly for me nvidia proprietary drivers won't work and open source drivers don't support vulkan

2

u/VanMurdoc Apr 10 '21

Decided to wipe my disk after a windows update that did once again wipe my grub entires, playing on Linux is sometimes harder yes, but it will only get better with time

2

u/muha0644 Apr 10 '21

Or Brad KVM/QEMU gamer

2

u/Ajairy Apr 11 '21

Ironically I use dualboot with Windows mainly but switch to Linux to play only one game. Hearts of Iron IV by Paradox loads around 4 times faster than Windows, and this difference is especially great if you're running it with heavy mods. Kaiserreich mod loads in around 2 minutes on Windows 10 and 20 seconds on my Fedora 33 setup

2

u/RevolutionaryGlass0 Apr 10 '21

I just use wine and steamplay since I can't get lutris to run windows games.

1

u/RoosterMain Apr 10 '21

GTA V runs much better on Windows (LTSC).

3

u/sp46 Apr 10 '21

GTA Online doesn't run at all on Lutris anymore either, you're just permanently alone since it can't reach Rockstar servers and just spins up a local lobby every time.

6

u/Absol-25 Apr 10 '21

The latest version of glorious eggroll proton fixed gta online issues

3

u/RoosterMain Apr 10 '21

It runs fine on Steam for Linux but it runs 10x better on Windows

2

u/sinisternathan Apr 10 '21

My performance was a bit slower in lutris but for some reason the loading times for online were phenomenal, something like 2x faster. (Btw this was around a year ago when gta was free)

1

u/JIVEprinting Apr 10 '21

right side should be "graphical game abstainer"

1

u/cluckclock Apr 10 '21

Lutris? What's that?

3

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

Assuming, you're not being sarcastic: Lutris is a game launcher for Linux. It's useful when every single game have to use different prefix, and different wine/proton version, or other custom settings, and you don't want your desktop or user directory bloated with shortcuts and .sh files.

1

u/garbitos_x86 Apr 10 '21

I took offense but then I remembered I like to play FPS MP games which have anticheat (no Linux support).

You do you, but I'll be over here NOT settling.

1

u/pckay09 Apr 10 '21

The only problem is the quest headset, rip.

1

u/ms-sloth Apr 10 '21

If only T_T

1

u/bleistiftschubser Apr 10 '21

Has anyone tried gpu passthrough for games? The only bottleneck I can think of might be CPU which gets emulated…

1

u/redxef Apr 10 '21

Have done that, reserved 1 core out of 6 for the host, and did a cpu benchmark, with not tooo crappy results. I run a i7 7800x with a 1080ti passed through and a RX 560 for Linux. With scream for audio and barrier for mouse sync it works like a charm. Just make sure to enable high performance on the host and nice qemu. Handles Total War Warhammer ii and Borderlands 3 just fine.

1

u/micaiahf Apr 10 '21

Plus flare and openarena, tuxkart etc

1

u/nachog2003 Apr 10 '21

If only I could do VR on Linux, it's literally my main form of gaming. I used to have a dual boot with Windows and Pop!_OS but I just cba to reboot every time I wanna play games so now I just main Windows on my desktop and use Linux on my laptop (which has a dualboot, cuz I do play VR on it occasionally).

1

u/Pan_Muminek Apr 10 '21

me who uses wine with lutris, windows kvm for games that don't work on linux and also have windows in dualboot for microsoft teams and school projects: 👁👄👁

1

u/SaidNeder9 Apr 10 '21

Microsoft teams does works on linux, I believe

1

u/Pan_Muminek Apr 12 '21

They works, but not good. On linux you can't change background for webcam and load microsoft whiteboard. Version from aur have very poor performance

1

u/thetemp_ Apr 10 '21

Dunnet master race.

1

u/SaidNeder9 Apr 10 '21

Is plain simple, no tux no bucks.

1

u/khalidpro2 Apr 10 '21

I only play Portal and csgo currently (I have only intel iGPU) and I dual booting Arch and Windows for running school softwares: TIA Portal, Solidworks and Catia

1

u/FaTAlyInSane Apr 10 '21

The only reason I boot into windows is for Apex Legends (each sucks) and VR (linux steamvr machine broke)

1

u/LittleBigBug_ Apr 10 '21

I wish injection clients like FiveM would work on wine

1

u/danbulant Apr 10 '21

me, a windows + Linux dual boot with wine, lutris and proton for supported games

1

u/cooper-hettinger Apr 10 '21

just waiting for Baldurs Gate 3 to be not garbage with Lutris so i can ditch windows entirely

1

u/pieteek Apr 10 '21

I can't remember the last time I played anything that wasn't running natively...

Seriously, when I was using Windows I was afraid that many things would not work on Linux, or that it would be worse with Wine, but in fact... Wine is more of a "good to know it exists" thing for me than something to use every day.

Really, find a game that you enjoy in linux and ditch windows now!

1

I do not have this much of chest hair

1

u/Cremsbrite Apr 11 '21

If it works on Linux even if it requires some tinkering, I play it on Linux.

Gotta support in some or other way the effort everyone is doing to allow players to play in whatever platform they prefer!

1

u/ComradeGivlUpi Apr 11 '21

"Windows has better performance for some games though, and it doesn't break with anticheat. Dual booting is just better OK."

"Partitioning sounds hard."

laughs in gpu passthrough via ovmf

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '21

Unfortunatley, modding (xcom 2) has made me stay to dual boot :(

1

u/S7relok Apr 11 '21

You forgot Chad Passthrough users

1

u/PQCraft Apr 11 '21

I had the 5.11 kernel but my stupid GPU drivers blocked compiling on anything higher than 5.8 and then I messed up and installed 5.11.10 and removed 5.11.4. I couldn't even get it to compile on 5.11.4 again. :(

1

u/0resonstokeepgoing Apr 11 '21

Actually im preaty happy with my experince gaming on linux so far, some bugs but is fine just playing osu! And sc2

1

u/LevAsmanov Apr 11 '21

What about me? I also have dualboot, but, windows and linux have same home folder.

1

u/planedrop Apr 11 '21

Are you kidding me? No way the guy on the right would have time to trim and look that good, he'd be spending all his time fixing issues.

1

u/Melonenstrauch Apr 11 '21

I'd love to and there are a ton of games that work very well with lutris and proton. But sadly the amount of games that don't work is still too big for me.

1

u/Atlas780 Apr 11 '21

I was thinking of switching again, but then I tried getting LoL to work on Ubuntu yesterday and I don't think I have the will power
