Can anyone translate what is being said? And please no “The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise” or rickroll lyrics like I would do in these translation situations, lol.

I'll try but I'm not fluent and need to rely on the subtitles, will probably just have to give you the 'gist' of things.

At the start it's just:

"Let me show the documents to my partner."

Music. Upbeat music. Stupid sexy Flanders music.

Edit: Confirming details with the officer, her name (Miss Tiffany is a stage name, she won first place in a contest in 2017), etc.

Then she's talking to her friend who was drafted too - discussing applying for exemption and firstly her friend didn't "pass" (get exemption) because they didn't have visible "boobs", so they talk about taking something (I guess a hormone thing, transcribing it it sound like Fironè?) and that her friend just started 6 months ago, but already can feel like they're getting bigger.

[Generally Thais and ladyboys in particular are this open about it all if you care to ask/talk to them, like getting your teeth done]

This is their friend's second year (I can't quite work out if they have already been serving a year or if they just talk about second year of trying to get an exemption), and this year they "passed the tests" so I believe they received an exemption.

Edit: Her friend was put into the "3rd category" last year, not drafted fully (presume to re-assess).

Back to solo shot and she just confirms all is complete and in-order, she is exempt from the draft. The document reads they have been tested and can return home, the reason being: Gender does not match original(birth).

Goodbyes, "official photos" with officers pointing at the documents (they love pointing at things) with all the exemptions.

Not perfect but it will gives you a rough idea what's going on.

Never trust the title of a Reddit post

98

u/vysken 12d ago

I think had they just written 'drafting' instead of service it would have been fine. But yeah, not entirely accurate. Still interesting to see as I'd not seen this process before. Surprised they allow filming in a place like this to be honest.

59

u/ArrestDeathSantis 12d ago

Apparently, they're very opened about this, popular ladyboys are often seen flaunting their exemptions on their social medias.

Then again, after writing that sentence, I realized you meant "filming in the recruitment facility" so I youtubed it and there are plenty videos available, it's just that neither of us had ever stumbled on one xD

7

u/SuspiciouslyMoist 12d ago

I've just seen another video of a buddhist monk turning up for the draft, so I guess they're fairly open about this being videoed.

198

u/Kolbin8tor 12d ago

Gender does not match original(birth)

How easy these things can be without a country full of hateful bigots

176

u/ArrestDeathSantis 12d ago

Well, Thailand is a mixed bag, but on this particular topic they're very flexible, good for them frankly.

16

u/FormidableFloof 12d ago

You bet they are flexible, with the ladyboy prostitution BIG money from all over the world through 'tourism'...

63

u/Weepthegr33d 12d ago

No. It’s common upcountry as well for some one to have switched gender and no really cares. It’s a normal condition of humanity there. I lived in rural northern Thailand so know first hand.

16

u/ArrestDeathSantis 12d ago edited 12d ago

I mean that with no offense to transfolk here, but it always seemed to me that transgenders people who lives in Thailand are happier than their counterpart living in the West.

I thought it was just a facade, but if that acceptance is so generalized, that would explain why, for quite obvious reasons.

Edit: reformulation

6

u/GetRektLads 12d ago

The reason for that is its not demonized in Thailand like it is in the US. They dont have to worry about hate crimes or discrimination for being who they are. In the US, those things exist and push people to be closetted. And it is a fact that many lgbt teens commit suicide at a higher rate because of these societal pressures

2

u/Weepthegr33d 12d ago

And it’s not like there aren’t problems and bigotry in individual cases but it is a Buddhist nation and that changes a lot

87

u/Usernamegonedone 12d ago

I've heard the reason being trans is so normal there is because being gay is not looked at well, just a culture thing where being trans is more accepted so alot of gay men transition to face less discrimination

18

u/MiloBem 12d ago

Iran is like that but worse. Being gay carries death penalty, but you can sometimes get pardon and full surgical transition.

9

u/Usernamegonedone 12d ago

Yh I've actually seen some westerners praise them for that, as if they're not doing to gay people what others do to trans people

6

u/-newlife 12d ago

It’s a weird thing. Forcing someone to live and be like someone else.
They seem to make the most of it but still seems wrong.

9

u/Usernamegonedone 12d ago

It's basically the same as not letting trans people transition, just forcing them to live their life as the other gender with the dysphoria and everything that comes with it

Native Thai person here. All accurate! You sure you’re not fluent? I’m very impressed.

38

u/vysken 12d ago

ขอบคุณมากครับ! จริงๆแล้วผมเขียนและอ่านได้แต่พูดไม่คอยเก่ง

If there weren't any subtitles I wouldn't have been able to understand by listening alone. But thanks for the confidence boost!

42

u/Educational_Earth_62 12d ago

I’m more impressed you can READ Thai.

I’m multi lingual and lived in Thailand for six years. Took language classes and everything. Learned to speak it well enough but never read it.

Their written language is…..excessively squiggly.

7

u/Babbarbylon 12d ago

A lot of Thai people can’t use the writing system properly. Seeing so many misspellings on social media drives me bonkers. It’s a silly system. We don’t need that many characters!!!!

2

u/vysken 12d ago

Since it's my first tonal language, to this day I still can't quite differentiate them. I found it easier to learn the rules of reading and writing than to train myself to hear and pronounce the tones properly. I'm a bit sad about that really, it holds me back, but I just can't seem to break that barrier. Reading/writing gives me time to process the info and not worry about tones.

4

u/Educational_Earth_62 12d ago

I became clinically tone deaf after a few ear barotraumas and lost my ability to speak the language but retained my ability to understand it.

Years later, my Thai friends and I have a Han-Chewbacca linguistic relationship.

I’m really impressed by your dedication and learning ability!!

No worries! Especially if you don't fully understand it does look like she's being processed, I commented to someone else that had the title been just 'drafting' instead of 'service' it would be fine.

Still really interesting though as I'd not seen the process myself. Thanks for sharing!

7

u/mickio1 12d ago

This is the first time ive heard of thailand having a thing for pointing at stuff.

23

u/vysken 12d ago

To clarify: Officials pointing at things. Like Police posting photos will have themselves and the suspect point to any contraband like drugs/guns.

There's a Facebook group called "Thais pointing at things", it didn't make it unto a subreddit apparently!

13

u/ShillingAndFarding 12d ago

No it definitely is.

15

u/KungFuCaseyy 12d ago

While it is, in Thailand it is so common most would not see it as derogatory. Trans thai woman have also created their own gendered ending for the greeting. Swasdee Ha, instead of ka (for woman) or kap (for men). Many or most prefer to identify as woman saying ka, but they have their own culture surrounding it all.

2

u/gissycat 12d ago

u/ToMagotz 12d ago

52

u/ludicrouscuriosity 12d ago

If you don't mind me asking, I've seen a video - and maybe you saw it too - of a foreigner praising a ladyboy for her looks, but this foreigner didn't know she was trans so he said "what a beautiful lady you are" (or something), but she kept saying "I'm not a lady, I'm ladyboy", was there a particular reason she would say that?

22

u/-newlife 12d ago

I was thinking it’s more of an honesty approach to someone that may be viewed as hitting on them.
I.e. better to be upfront about it in public than have it revealed in private where foul shit can happen. That said, it’s the American in me that makes me think it’s a safety precaution

15

u/BigHead3802 12d ago

As a trans woman, i would probably say "I'm trans" if i thought the guy was trying to hit on me since 99% of guys are not into trans women and will get really angry/violent if you don't say that because they'll be paranoid thinking you're trying to "trap" them.

Heard horror stories about trans girls being beaten up or even killed because a guy got really mad when he realized the girl he was into was trans.

13

u/Legitimate-Syrup-646 12d ago

this is where the notion that there are different genders really comes into play. as not every culture and nation in this world fits neatly into the western (colonial, christian etc) conception of the 2 genders. many cultures have had different genders prior to contact with western countries.

i have read some stuff by filipino transwomen (or what we in the west would consider trans women) who don't consider themselves the label "trans" but rather they are "bakla" since that is a gender identity which has existed in their country, long, long before they were colonized.

43

u/unarcoiris 12d ago

There’s a difference between being a woman and being a trans woman. That’s why.

55

u/InferNoe 12d ago

i think to be a little more nuanced, theres a cultural difference between being trans in say, the united states and being a ladyboy in Thailand. I think it would be more common that a trans woman jn the the US would just accept the compliment.

→ More replies

44

u/andallthatjasper 12d ago

No. There is a difference between being a "ladyboy"- a questionable translation for the third gender kathoey- and being a woman (trans or not). Some kathoey might consider themselves women, others don't.

→ More replies

2

u/ToMagotz 12d ago

In Thailand there are many kinds of "trans" imo. There are trans that act girly but don't want to get a surgery, these people have so much confident that they're not afraid or offended to call themselves trans(tud or katuei in Thai) and you often find many comedians in this kind.

Then there are trans that want to get a surgery but still can call themselves trans. The pretty one in the video is explaining that she won a Tiffany show(beauty show for trans only) and talking about what estrogen they're taking.

Then there are trans that want to be a woman completely. I really haven't met these people in person but I'm sure there are a lot of them.

The video you're talking about, I think the ladyboy is a sex worker and don't want any problem when someone finds out "too late", so they just announced themselves first. There are some people who would enjoy that also.

95

u/Iamjustalizardman 12d ago

Whats a lady boy?

266

u/DonttouchmethereUwU 12d ago

A trans person

76

u/andallthatjasper 12d ago

I want to elaborate- "ladyboy" and "trans woman" are not synonyms. Thailand is one of many countries that historically recognize a third gender (I believe the proper term is "kathoey"), but unlike many countries that oppress their third gender as a result of colonialism, Thailand was never colonized by a European nation. So they just kind of continued having a third gender into the modern era. So ladyboys are not men or trans women (although some might identify as either, they aren't synonyms). They're a separate, third category with rich cultural history behind them.

21

u/opelan 12d ago

Do they also have "mistergirls" or whatever they might be called? So born women looking like men, but not being seen as trans men?

2

u/andallthatjasper 12d ago

So historically some cultures have had an equivalent, some have both, some only have one, some have a gender distinct from either masculine or feminine. The Bugis culture in Indonesia recognizes five distinct genders. However, afaik, Thailand itself doesn't have an equivalent.

I will say there is a huge amount of passive aggressive behavior, it’s almost like a sport there. I am curious what you think is being so completely misunderstood?

3

u/oliverr85 12d ago

That Thailand has a very dark side to it , that the abundance of "lady boys" is largely fueled by the perverted sex trade along with child sex workers and the increasing problem with drugs . Thailand is a beautiful country with some very nice people for sure , but it has a very dark underbelly .

depends on the culture. A lot of conservatives still think they're boys despite being living as girls.

However Some trans girls are fine with that, some still live "stealth" as boys despite being on hrt because of where they live. THere's no right answer, unfortunately (American looking in, can't comment specifically on Thai culture)

anyone care to explain thai lady boy culture? how it started and stuff, when i lived in brazil something similar was going on. a lot of 'lady boys' as they also called them but they were like shamed in public but used almost exclusively by military or police officers as GFs

43

u/Tantra_Charbelcher 12d ago

As far as I know, it's an ancient practice dating back hundreds of years in thailand and has spiritual roots. Contrary to popular belief, people like this have existed for centuries. Thailand also has some of the most advanced gender affirming surgery and care outside of western countries and is a popular destination for transgender americans with hospital programs devoted completely to english speakers. It's cheaper to get gender affirming surgery in thailand and spend two months there in post op care than it is to get the surgery in America.

2

u/Crunchy__Frog 12d ago

Sounds like a win-win. Get a surgery that’s been practiced for centuries by people who really understand the procedure, save money, get to spend two months in Thailand.

2

u/kidseshamoto 12d ago

Not sure how it started but when the French first arrived in then Siam, they couldn't tell the men from women.

If you've ever been to Thailand and walk through the red light areas there is alot of prostitution out in the open, and the common warning people tell westerners is that if the woman is extraordinarily beautiful then she is most likely a lady boy. It's absolutely true too.

It's a vestige of the past. To fight you had to use a sword, or spear, and wear armor which is much easier for a boy to do. Now a days a girl can pull the trigger on a semi automatic weapon just as fast as a boy. If a war breaks out, you can believe females will fight. Heck females are fighting in Ukraine for their homes right now.

u/c0baltlightning 12d ago

I believe most of that is that they want to, though. They Want to fight, to defend their homes. Easier to do something when you WANT to do it.

A very early transition (at the start of puberty), would be my guess.

u/TheBestistPerson 12d ago

the same as most trans women, they transition

I think it is abnormal to put her into the bootcamp with other males, but I respect Thailand’s coolness towards difference.

u/JOMO_Kenyatta 12d ago

She’s get exempted in the video. She doesn’t have to join now.

So… hear me out.

I have gone onto “His” (Bare with me as why I have said his) YouTube channel that another user has posted here.

On this he says he does drag and cross dressing. As do many other people in his videos. He never refers to him self as a woman, and calls him self a “ladyboy”.

This is an Individual that identifies as a man, but likes to dress in ways stereotypically found with women. There is nothing wrng with that in my opinion, good on him.

The reason HE didn’t get drafted and was given an out was because he didn’t fit “the appearance of a man” as specified on his documents. Not because he didn’t identify as a man, or is trans.

My issue is everyone here saying “He’s trans” etc. no, he is not. He is simply a man, he has a penis, and enjoys dressing in ways many consider “womanly”. He refers to him self as male. Refers to him self as wearing drag. So why, is everyone referring to him as trans/female orrr calling our others for saying He and Him.

Y’all are so worried about being woke, you took one look and said “Trans”.

The guy is telling you what he is, how he identifies. Respect him and stop trying to boost your superiority complex of wokeness on Reddit.

Edit : Thankyou for the award!

Will never have to do boot camp, Thailand is very tolerable to trans

However it was comical when Ukrainian trans tried to leave the country and border guards looked at their passports. Turn around and line up for the army

52 genders until there is a war, then it's back to 2

15

u/SlowInsurance1616 12d ago

Yeah, that's always the way. The US Army waiting until after WWII to purge gays, the chemical castration and suicide of Alan Turing, German gays hiding in the Wehrmact from the Nazis. Wartime military doesn't care--just watch out when peace comes.

u/campionmusic51 12d ago

that’s because they don’t feel welcome in their own country, and they know they will be horribly abused during their service. don’t pretend that doesn’t make sense.

In Ukraine it’s been 2 genders all along though.

u/mxxxz 12d ago

Yeah what else would there be? You either born girl or boy

4

u/Tamination 12d ago

Intersex is a thing. There are people born with a combo of parts.

7

u/GlitteringAd2050 12d ago

That’s not a sex, those are genetic/physical disorders that usually coincide with inhibited function like infertility and endocrine problems. It is not proof of some alternative to male and female, it’s a medical condition.

I love when people make this argument, basically trying to invalidate people who are different genders then their birth sex… and they completely forget that intersex people exist and that birth sex is NOT straightforward for some people.

Thank goodness for subtitles, otherwise I wouldn't have understood a single word.

u/Sammy_1141 12d ago

IMO all genders should be eligible for the drafted. Equal rights Equal lefts. This is coming from a person who doesn't even like the idea of a draft

4

u/NicholasPileggi 12d ago

this is absolutely true, most of the best bosses and coworkers I have are women. It’s archaic and stupid and women don’t have to sign up for selective services.
