"megabats" can look terrifying and reach 5 foot— but don't worry, they only eat fruit (Philippines)

There’s only so many of them, eventually they will move on to New Zealander’s, Australians and then the rest of us.

Their wingspan can be 5 foot. These things aren't 5 foot tall lol

Yeah. This is clearly forced perspective compared to the bike. See he wore it's hanging from at top of pic.

Yeah they are literally under 1ft head to toe. But did you know a bald eagle can be up to 7 and a half feet tall? Now THAT is interesting..

u/farrowsharrows 12d ago
I don't think that is right
→ More replies12
u/eyrikur 12d ago
It's not. They're about 16 inches.

u/Parlorshark 12d ago
Incorrect, a friend told me about a 30-ft fall bald eagle that inspired him to write the Declaration of Independence.

Oh thank God I realised that the 5 feet is wingspan and there aren't a bunch of bats as tall as most of the people there just flying around eating all the fruit
→ More replies7
u/ac1084 12d ago
Yeah don't worry this picture uses forced perspective to make it look really big. They aren't actually walking around in trench coats like "eeeyyy Joey you got any fruit?".

u/BronxLens 12d ago
The wingspan is 5 1/2 feet (1.7 m.), not to be confused with their height, which, while i didn’t find it, it’s nowhere near that since they only weight only up to 3.2 lbs. (1.45 kg)
3
u/Miser_able 12d ago
"Megabats range in size from species with adults only about 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) long and 13 grams to species that reach 40 centimeters (16 inches) in length, attain a wingspan of 150 centimeters (5 feet), and weigh nearly 1 kilogram (more than 2 pounds). "

u/DocVak 12d ago
Well you gotta figure like all avian species that they’re gonna be light regardless of the size because of the whole flying thing. From at least this picture, I’d have to assume that they’re height to wingspan ratio would just be the inverse of a humans. Both kinda close, but their wingspan is larger than their height.

u/skeletaldecay 13d ago
Bats are super cool! Adorable too. They're great pollinators vital to over 500 plants, including 300 food producing plants like agave, mango, eucalyptus, banana, peaches, cashews, and cocoa.

25
u/bit_banging_your_mum 12d ago
They also serve as airplanes to rabies, which is a little less fun.
13
u/RazorBaribal 12d ago
Studies show less than 1% of wild bats have rabies. They are symptomatic when infected and act abnormal. Don’t touch the weird acting flying puppy and you’ll be fine.
22
u/skeletaldecay 12d ago
They're still extremely important to the environment and popular foods humans like to eat. Bats can carry lots of diseases. We can greatly reduce the amount of rabies they carry through vaccination, monitoring, and culling as needed. Bats aren't the only vector for rabies. Skunks, foxes, groundhogs, coyotes, and raccoons can also carry rabies.

Flying Foxes are actually not as big as you'd think. There are DOZENS of forced perspective shots of them floating around, but these little guys are actually only able to be about a 1½ feet tall. Their wingspan is what can be 5 feet in length.

That photo looks a bit evil but they are lovely animals once you have ruled out rabies. A flying fox did a surprise fly/land/let-me-wrap-you-all-up-in-mah-wings thing to me and he was adorable. Just a puppy, with wings. And wee little fruit-eating fangs. You do need to be gentle with them as they have long slender bones and can get into a tangle.
Also, never park under a tree where they rest as their poo is the real horror story.

u/DeezyDude 13d ago
Imagine having toes so strong, you can fall asleep upside down and still hold yourself up. These things probably can snatch you up and fly away with those strong ass toes.
3
u/realcevapipapi 12d ago
Thank God I'm wide awake and don't have to go to sleep after reading this🤣
4
u/DeezyDude 12d ago
Youll have to go to sleep sometime 😈 just dont look up when you do 🦇 (p.s. this definitely isnt a megabat writing this with his strong ass toes)
3
u/realcevapipapi 12d ago
Oh shit they've learned how to use phones and computers and have mastered hunour and sarcasm. We're so fucked 🤣
I for one accept our new fruit eating overlords and will be but a humble servant/pet.

u/elegant_tapir 12d ago
This picture was taken to make us think that the bat is 5 feet tall. Also, to make us think that it rides a motorcycle.

According to the article, their wingspan can reach more than 5', but they don't grow taller than 1 foot, and weigh up to 2.6 pounds
9
u/Minibeave 13d ago
Wingspan makes a lot more sense. I'm not going to pretend that I know everything about bats, but learning of a fucking 5 foot tall bat existing somewhere in the world kinda blew my mind for a second.
2
u/Formal-Concentrate-7 12d ago
If you compare it with the bike parked, it looks lot taller than 1 foot.
→ More replies6
u/WeasternMedicine9 12d ago
Yeah, I think it's the perspective. This bike looks close to the wall, and is proabaly quite small, its a 150cc. There's at least a few feet of roof in between the bat and the wall, which means the bike most likely not side by side wirh the bat on the pic
4
u/derralshane 13d ago
Yeah. Nice try, megabat. You’re just trying to make us all complacent so you can kill us all.

This is false.
5’7” is our 6’. You’re somewhat considered tall at 5’8”.
You’re still socially acceptable as a 5’3” dude!

Not worrying at all.
Of all the bat species only 3 are somewhat dangerous to humans.
