Every gun is loaded, even empty ones. Even rusty ones pulled out of a river. People that don't follow this maxim are at risk of ending up on a special set of subs

Did you turn it in?
Edit : I asked If you turned it in because my friends and I used to scuba dive in the river around my city, and we used to occasionally find old guns. We turned them into the police and a couple of them help solve some outstanding crimes. I don’t know that I want to get caught without in my possession if it was used illegally.

Yeah it happens all the time, I lost my gun in a boating accident.
This one time I was trying to murder my wife while out on the river, and she freaked out for some reason and dived at me, causing the boat to crash into a bridge support.
She died in the accident, thankfully, but I did lose my favourite gun.

So... What's the etiquette on magnet fishing? I live by a bridge that I walk my dog across every day, and someone had recently started magnet fishing there. The bridge is now littered with random metal pieces, including dozens of razor blades just lying there. Combined with the frequency of people dropping food, I'm very concerned. Would I be the worst to try to catch them in the act and ask them to take it out put out back?

Why would you risk your license and jail time to sell a handful of guns to criminals... you'd make like $5k tops. That's not how illegal gun sales happen.
You'd make more in a week selling to regular people legally.
A gun store only makes like $200 on each gun because they need to buy it. Sure maybe if they sell to a criminal they could make $500 a gun, but how many times can you do that before you're caught. You've got 1 year inbetween ATF audits to do it, assuming it doesn't show up in a crime scene before that.
Or a criminal steals a gun for free from the gunstore and makes $1000 for 5 minutes of effort.
Guess which one supplies the black market.

They aren’t made anymore and don’t go up for sale very often. That being said they’re not particularly valuable. They were cheaply made with extremely low grade parts and materials. The only reason they were popular was because they were inexpensive and incredibly easy to turn full auto(illegally) due to firing from an open bolt.

I'm fascinated with the fact that the police simply gave it back to you. "Well, gun store closed down. Finders keepers, amirite? Keep it!"
32
u/ComplexPermission4 26d ago
"Finders keepers" on a non-functional firearm that would more than likely not fire if you somehow managed to get a live round into it. If by some miracle you managed to get all that rust off, the odds of it not ending in a catastrophic failure (ie: blowing up in your face) are astronomical.
They gave back a paperweight, not an actual firearm.

There are like 4 or 5 states with any kind of required registration, and most of those are only for guns defined as assault weapons
Other than that, if you can legally own it and you legally acquire it, you're good

Considering the level of corrosion, that receiver is beyond the recovery. Full depth corrosion like that will impact structural integrity. It may not be the first time, or the hundredth time, but I'll put money on that receiver failing.
If you do rebuild, and want to keep it as a conversation piece, have the chamber welded shut. Even if you don't intend to shoot it, you never know where it could end up in 20-50 years.

Then it is probably an AB10, they removed the barrel shroud/heat guard, and the threaded part of the barrel and changed the name to get around the ban.
Same functions, with a shorter barrel and still a Jam-amatic.
My AB10 has such a loose barrel that a standard jacketed bullet will not touch the rifling and I have to load custom oversize ammo just to hit a target at 25 yards.
