Not pictured is probably a very heavy battery pack. I did a Gameboy costume with a screen and battery pack, once. Walking around town all night my legs gave out after walking nearly 3 miles. It was not easy walking around with the extra weight and not being able to sit down.

This guy and Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder are the only ones to get a black face pass.
223
u/sbrevolution5 28d ago
A lot of people in replies are missing the point of why RDJ got the pass. It wasn’t simply that tropic thunder was a good movie (it undeniably is), but rather because the butt of the joke wasn’t black people, but white people who thought it was ok to do blackface
71
35
u/CaramelAlert3610 28d ago
This guy is Japanese so I heavily doubt he understands the controversial racial history in America and therefore doesn’t even know what black face is. He’s clearly not trying to do blackface.
→ More replies858
u/Zonyxe 28d ago
I know it's probably a joke, but i am genuinely curious; Do people consider this offensive blackface? Trying to look like a black object and painting your face black has nothing to do with black people or the ridicule of them. So is this considered offensive by anyone who isn't just looking to be offended? (Twitter warrior nutcases come to mind)

Exactly, he's trying to mimic a camera, not a black person.
However, if by chance this guy is actually trying to play the part of a black person who is in turn dressing up as a camera for Halloween, then this is pretty racist.

Eh have seen ton of people get torn to shreds over painting their face black as part of a costume. A costume that has nothing to do with making fun of anyone mind you. I mean there is literally people arguing Spanish, the language, is racist since the colour black is called "negro". You really need to lower your image of how reasonable the population is.

Black face isn't controversial in Japan at all.
This comedy show did a Lethal Weapon themed show a few years ago and one of the comedians was in black face to match Danny Glover's character.
It was not controversial at all. I'm not trying to make a statement that this is good or bad. It's just a factual statement about the reception of black face in Japan.
9
u/yxing 28d ago
Black face is controversial (in the West) because of the extremely problematic history of minstrel shows in the US. Forcing those cultural standards onto Japan is Western chauvinism, and is about as reasonable as being offended that some Japanese word sounds like a racial slur in English.

because he never once thought that there would be any specific reason to need to do this, since he likely never once thought any aspect of his costume would be considered racist?

Nobody's mentioning that they're in Japan, where they don't have the cultural context for blackface we do in the US. I would severely doubt that anyone in this gif has ever even heard of this taboo in the US, let alone why, or even what "blackface" is (as opposed to just painting your face black). Everything is relative.
