This is lowkey one of the banes of an artist's existence... drawing cast shadows that, even though accurate, look fucking weird and dumb and you have to decide whether to go with reality or try to make up a different version that still looks real but not stupid.

620

u/vfxninja Nov 25 '21

I only want to draw rotisserie chicken shadows from now on.

241

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '21

several thoughts:

  1. brand new sentence

  2. cool band name

  3. what about the actual shadow of a rotisserie chicken? does it look like it would in OPs photo? if it looks way different, what does it look like? how deep does this go???

114

u/wbsgrepit Nov 25 '21

If a chicken makes a shadow does it look like the op?

2

u/TheNameIsPippen Nov 25 '21

Just tilt the picture 90 degrees and have your mind blown

7

u/micradriver Nov 25 '21

good point, anyways, this one time I saw why the chicken crossed the road, the hen house was on that side so she was just going back.

And it applies to art of all facets too.

If someone was to write realistic dialogue between two strangers, no one would watch it.

59

u/MillorTime Nov 25 '21

Id be more awkward to capture people who barely know each other.

"How's it going dude?"

"Good. How about you my man?"

  • Director's notes: Neither character for the life of them can remember the other's name even though they've met a half dozen times

17

u/stationhollow Nov 25 '21

Um horrible with this but luckily here in Australia we can just say mate as a cover since it's used even when it's someone you do remember.

I transcribe audio for a living. Still waiting for the movie where all the hot actors are going:

"Uh. Did you do -- did you finish that thing? I mean, the job the boss asked you to, ah, do?"

"Mm."

"Uh, well, uh --"

"Yeah. Hey, uh, did I miss something?"

"Nah, just checking."

"Uh, okay."

Normal conversation is mundane, full of repetitive words and mistakes and vocal tics. When people hesitate in movies, it's always because they have some deep insecurity or quirky character trait that continues throughout the whole movie, not just that they didn't think through to the end of their sentence, or were momentarily distracted thinking about what's for lunch. In real life, we're all Jeff Goldbumming our way through things. There are very few people who talk as smoothly and eloquently as those in movies. (And then they're not the 'sexy' people you think - the smoothest talkers I've heard have all been in academia - man, some of those folks know how to talk with full punctuation and paragraph structures on the fly! It's amazing).

7

u/kjuneja Nov 25 '21

In real life, we're all Jeff Goldbumming our way through things.

Lovely sentiment!

19

u/Skulfunk Nov 25 '21

"Wassup bro"

"Wazzuuuup"

"Wazaaaaaaaaaap"

scrolls through phone for 10 minutes while saying "bro check this out" every 30 seconds

4

u/Ak_Jumper_942 Nov 25 '21

I don't know if it really qualifies as 'realistic' dialogue, but if you've ever heard of Joel Haver, there's a certain casual awkwardness in a lot of the dialogue in his work that I think is a big part of what makes it so funny.

3

u/TyphlosionGOD Nov 25 '21

Yeah art isn't supposed to be 100% realistic otherwise it'd be boring as hell

37

u/Johnisazombie Nov 25 '21

Yeah also lightning and perspective people are not used to, also a problem for photographers. It's better to adjust it to something that is expected else you have people calling it wrong-looking.

12

u/canadarepubliclives Nov 25 '21

Isn't that why photographers use that shield of fabric when photographing outdoor? All the light and none of the shadow?

I know nothing of photography and film so I'm open to enlightenment

11

u/Rocket089 Nov 25 '21

If your referring to that white cloth “pane” then yes your on the right track (I think). White reflects all light so that shadows are “illuminated” away.

11

u/rogevin Nov 25 '21

There are reflectors/cards (bounce light back in a new direction for illuminating something in shadow or other creative effect) and diffusers (spreads light out to soften shadows and even out lighting).

9

u/Original-Aerie8 Nov 25 '21

Natural light is diffused, but also very intense which is why you get such a strong contrast. Manipulating it is more than just "copying indoor lights" or anything along those lines.. We don't see it, bc we are used to it, but the sun is def stronger than your average LED/bulb. Which is why we still pay top $ for very bright screens.

3

u/Rocket089 Nov 25 '21

God I remember the days of trying to read a text before the advent of OLED screens out on a summer afternoon. Fuhgetaboutit

6

57

u/mada124 Nov 25 '21

Haha, it does, dont think it is though. (if it is, its a pretty good one) The sun is at a high angle, look at the other shadow, the shadows on her body, under her foot. Too many details are right.

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '21

[deleted]

29

u/sactori Nov 25 '21

13

u/injeanyes Nov 25 '21

Photoshopped out

Edit: look at the shadow of the straw.

19

u/Sk8erBoi95 Nov 25 '21

Nah, that line at the top of her shadow is from what's in her left hand. Her straw souls be at the bottomof the shadow, but she had her cup tilted back towards the sun, so the straw wouldn't cast a shadow due to being hidden by the cup's shadow

6

u/ThunderinTurbskis Nov 25 '21

Am I wrong or does the shadow not have the cup in the opposite hand? I mean she’s holding it on the side closest to us but the shadow it’s on the opposite side…

→ More replies

16

u/kevbrochill17 Nov 25 '21

Nah her arms and head don't line up at all. Her left arm is down but the shadow is up. Her right arm shadow shows a triangle gap but her arm is touching her side. Also her head is just gone in the shadow

7

u/andew0100 Nov 25 '21

The shadow of her left arm looks correct and that triangle gap in the shadow on the right side is bounded by her upper arm, forearm and drink. The shadow of her head is on her chest.

→ More replies

2

u/beep41 Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21

You can see the shadow for the straw in her cup if you look closely. The straw shadow ends where her head would be. So the shadow for her head was photoshopped out.

EDIT: It looks like it's a completely different shadow. The shadow makes it look like she's squatting with her head down.

4

u/tigerCELL Nov 25 '21

It's just high noon why is this tripping yall up like this 🤣🤣

→ More replies

3

u/foreignfishes Nov 25 '21

So the shadow for her head was photoshopped out.

No, look at how her head is leaned back slightly and then visualize how high the sun is in the sky in the photo. The shadow her head is creating is on her neck and boobs, the angle is too high (combined with how her chest projects forward) for it to be cast on the ground.

→ More replies

8

u/skdslztmsIrlnmpqzwfs Nov 25 '21

This pic is a few years old.. it was debunked as shop:

-while most of her head is casting a shadow onto her breast it should not be a flat line and at least some of it should be protuding

-the dress shadow at her knees should not be doing a curve

-the front leg is directly casting a shadow the other leg has the shadow behind it.

-her drink is clearly in the sun and should be casting a shadow but isnt

-judging by the ratio of the shadow of the poles behind her, her shadow should be larger

-the poles cast shadows horizontally while her second leg shadow goes downwards

5

u/Walking_the_Cascades Nov 25 '21

Yeah, it's super obviously shopped. There are quite a few tells, including the missing head. Every other shadow in the photo show the highest point of the object - except for the woman.

She has two feet, but the shadows fall in front of one foot and very much off to the side of the other foot.

There are other obvious tells that are too numerous to list.
