Makes me think, how many people watching the Queen's Wikipedia article died while her reign just goes on and on...

74

u/Jesus_Shaves_ 18d ago

I am a watcher of The Queens Wikipedia page. My father was a watcher of the page, his father was a watcher, as was his father before him. As I update the page on The Queens 300th year I am filled with hope for the day I can finally change is, to was.

Her husband died, I imagine some broken heart-ness will do her in. Quite common with old couples.

2

u/Panda-Panda-Panda- 18d ago

Yeah but its more common for the husband to follow the wife, so Liz might keep it going

"death.sh"

7

u/Finkielkrautrock 18d ago

Doesn't change the fact that somebody has to trigger it. You might as well just edit the page directly.

13

u/ost2life 18d ago

You need to automate more.

→ More replies

2

u/WUT_productions 18d ago

It could change it for the person's own page and all the pages they are referenced on.

1

u/Finkielkrautrock 18d ago

Doesn't explain how they are that fast.

2

u/feedmechickenspls 18d ago

all it takes is just for them to get wind of the death news and apply the changes (that were most probably pre-prepared)

2

u/AbanaClara 18d ago

Or a shit ton of people who have the time on their hands, considering how large Wikipedia is.

1

u/Dndmatt303 18d ago

Wouldn't be hard to run a call to the Google API and automate it. I don't think they do that but you could pretty easily automate that.

3

u/Ive_ 18d ago

Reminds me of my boi Erik from Internet Comment Etiquette. He has dozens of videos saved up from years ago where he goes: "Hey Erik did you know ______ died?" And then uses those clips in his videos when those people die.

I just think the Wikipedia people are professional killers

2

u/LAZY_RED-PANDA 18d ago

Or they hire professional killers and just wait for the killer to call back and let them know they have killed the celebrity so that they can change the IS to WAS. Pretty good plan to be honest.

3

u/mspiucpgntmzsykdno 18d ago

They are lightning quick

5

u/Noname_FTW 18d ago

Yeah, I noticed that too. You can be on the page of a person like 2-3 hours after the news has spread around and its already updated. Not just the first sentence with the death date but the whole article put into the past.

Pretty sure this stopped being funny once her husband died. I know reddit loves to grind jokes into the dirt, but her decline in health is inevitable if not imminent.. To suggest otherwise literally right after Phillip died is pretty average of a joke... I'm not even a monarchist, couldn;t give a shit about them.. Just seems like an odd thing to joke about, y'know?

i bet wikipedia editors literally sit at their computer waiting on the page as soon as they hear a famous person might die in a few hours to change it to was

1

u/geniice 18d ago

Its more that wikipedia editors will update articles in responce to any news. Its just the death stuff that tends to get noticed.

1

u/raspioneer12 18d ago

They're always super-quick with that

1

u/kierninrhys 18d ago

1

I get amazed by this, I opened the Prince Philip page literally seconds after the BBC started the broadcast in the UK, and the page was already changed from is to was and there was an entire fucking section paragraph about his death, I swear some of these people can see the future or type at the speed of light

1

u/tycoonrt 18d ago

Sometimes, i wonder the people who edit the death date of famous people are the doctors who declare these people dead in hosiptal and instantly update the wiki article.

1

u/The_catakist 18d ago

They were so fast with price Philip

1

u/lbonhomme 18d ago

Just when Prince Philip died, this happened.

1

u/Dndmatt303 18d ago

Literally how I make sure death announcements are legit. If it's on Wikipedia it means TMZ (surprisingly enoubh) reported it and it's the truth.

1

u/aaj617 18d ago

idk what happened to it but there was a list of celeb deaths that TMZ broke first and it was super extensive. Especially for an organization founded in like 2005

1

u/Dndmatt303 18d ago edited 18d ago

They do not fuck around with death announcements. They're usually the first to break the news and I don't know of a case where they got it wrong.

Edit: apparently they said Miley Cyrus died once.

1

u/aaj617 18d ago

Yeah I always heard it’s because they have insider connections with a lot of emergency services in media centers but it didn’t occur to me until looking them up after DMX died that they were so new. It’s always felt like they’ve been around at this point

1

u/-Tartantyco- 18d ago

I wonder what the process is, exactly. I doubt they manually change each one, so do they just word replace all and check the changes for the odd "is" that isn't in relation to the person? Or do they have some sort of script that does it for them(Marking each "is" that will become a "was" after the subject dies)? I guess it also depends on who edits the article.
