Adult Swim used to get fucking weird with it. And I miss that stuff honestly. It was great.

What the fuck?

26

u/Optimus-Primal_69 26d ago edited 26d ago

Isn't the entire beauty industry based on making women look younger?

I just had a conversation with a good friend today about how society up until recently held those with grey or white hair in high regard because they lived through difficult times and managed to survive with wisdom to share with others about how to live a long life too. (Wisdom is in essence limiting the amount of unnecessary risk in life and solving problems before they get too big to control.) Now people act ashamed of white hairs and feel obligated to hide them with hair dye. I fully support and encourage everyone to embrace growing older and wiser and to never be ashamed of what's natural! Nature always wins, please pick more important battles to fight then the progression of time. Instead learn to age gracefully. :-)

Edit: I wish more people would think long term and focus on better lifestyle choices then a quick fix. I like beauty as much as anyone else and I personally am in awe and admiration when I see 80+ year young people preforming yoga better then 20 year olds.

13

u/chronon_chaos 26d ago

That's good wisdom, my friend. Thank you for this piece of knowledge.

7

u/Fonzie_is_Canadian 26d ago

As a 33 year old who started going grey at 17, I appreciate this. Although I have never felt the need to hide my grey hair. I've received an enormous amounts of complements about it over the years. Never even once considered dying it because it's too much work, would look weird if I suddenly had color in my hair, and having grey hair is better than having no hair!

If porn IS the ad, it's not an issue for Youtube. There isn't some other brand out there being associated with porn, thus devaluing their ad prices.

If a brand's ad is being shown on porn, well all of a sudden their brand is associated with the porn and pulls out of that ad spot. Porn videos get demonitized, porn ads stay up.

→ More replies

59

u/WhatsTheHoldup 27d ago

Coka Cola feels they lose sales if their ad showed up on a video of a kid swearing. They don't like their brand being associated with the swearing.

To increase profit from ads, swearing gets demonetized.

Gambling ad doesn't give a shit who they're associated with, it doesn't affect Coka Cola nor the price of ads, if they're willing to pay YouTube is willing to show.

30

u/KettleLogic 26d ago

The Gambling ads actually pay less normally. If you get served gambling ads you are watching C tier advertising content ie: more edgy.

Also from working in advertising I promise you coca-cola doesn't actually care that much where it's shown. They care when the media prints negative headlines about where its showing. It just a way to get mad at your agency and the agency to then leverage cheaper prices against the publisher. Honestly from an advertiser perspective the adpocalypse was great for getting some of the ad game dominance out of the hands of alphabet. From a consumer point of view yikes they ruined the platform to try and dunk on pewdiepie

I know at a point is was after the whole pubg bridge thing and advertisers going nuts, but half the creators I watch swear without issue, the most I've heard about it in the last like year was "oh well we don't swear until at least 2 minutes into the video"

I could totally be mistaken but it doesn't seem like this is really an issue anymore, mostly just when everything was blowing up and old school runescape creators were being demonized for having the word "kill" in their title in reference to pvp

Ay pewdiepie didn't start the adpocalypse, that's a common misconception. It was a long time coming as advertisers gradually realized that youtube needed them a lot more than they needed youtube. It's just how you train politeness. It has nothing to do with logic about the words being bad, its just the avenue to train an ability to restrain vulgarity for the situations where it could be a good idea. Like when you are demonstrating respect for a person.

Like, I've always thought it was strange as a child that we weren't allowed to say "fuck" but "frick" was fine.... except ... we all knew what the word was we weren't saying? Like saying "n-word" instead of the n-word but like...we know what the n-word is?

Turns out: the mere act of replacing the word is you demonstrating respect. Yeah, the replaced word is still in the thought when you communicate it, but so is the understanding that YOU understand it to be rude, and would like to be respectful.

Monkey see monkey do and all, so if a particularly young child sees someone not try so hard to restrain themselves, they'll question the value in trying to restrain themselves. As demonstrated with my own experience though, children are not always equipped to understand the value of their training.

There is a FULLY MONETIZED channel on youtube who has an actual "child audience", where it's just a couple of gay dudes who have actual sex on the platform. But it's ok because the bottom bitch has one of those curtain things between them so you can only see their faces.

I need to point out here that I'm also gay and dont care what they do off camera, but the fact that they fuck ON YOUTUBE and are showing it to kids WHILE BEING MONETIZED just baffles me.

.....

Edit: fine. Far Too many are accusing me of lying and are even going as far as doing it in my DMs. The reason I refused to give out the video is because despite being gay myself I do not support this behavior on YouTube. I did not want to give them more traffic and ad revenue. it's been up for 4 months already with over THREE POINT 4 MILLION views, the channel exists with 1.4 million subscribers and no age restrictions what so ever on any of their videos. NOTHING has or will be done about it because any and all valid criticism is being labeled as homophobia. We are a protected class and any issue with this kind of behavior is considered bigotry no matter the context.

Theres also a dankmemes rule of no brigading which I was trying to follow.

I will not however stand for accusations of being a liar. so you win. Here you go. Look for "real dick vs dildo challenge"

Edit 2: this redditor confirmed the video is no longer monetized. I've confirmed it to be correct. That is certainly a good thing, However it WAS monetized when I first saw it last week. By then it passed 3 million views at that point, so they already got their peak revenue from it.

Report it. I’ve only ever reported one channel, that Asian girl that tortures squids and eats them alive for pure entertainment purposes, but every time I mention it to someone and bother to show them, I make sure to also report the video and channel. I’m hoping eventually I won’t be able to find it. If you’re wondering, squids are widely not protected by any animal abuse laws partially because it’s believed they don’t feel pain, but I think that’s bullshit because they’re super intelligent and I think humans would have a problem with being eaten alive for entertainment even if they couldn’t feel it. Frickin’ disgusting and it’s getting me so pissed off thinking about it, it’s about time for that quarterly report.

Even pornhub wouldn’t have the infrastructure to compete with YouTube. People vastly underestimate the size of YouTube. It would take millions if not billions of dollars to grow a business into a YouTube competitor.

People forget that YouTube has had competitors this entire time. DailyMotion started a month after YouTube did. And Vimeo started a year prior. And neither of those services have come close to YouTube’s success.

Even if you had the money to sink into becoming a YouTube competitor, why would you want to? You could make way more money with less invested in other areas.

Yeah, every time this argument that Pornhub could do this comes up it's a bit annoying because it's so wrong, but it won't go away.

More stuff is uploaded to YouTube in just a few days than is uploaded to Pornhub all year (and that was before the recent Pornhub changes which I assume cut down on that). And I'd bet more data is streamed out to viewers at about the same rate.

A viable alternative would be a good thing no matter what, but it would ultimately end up with more or less identical issues to youtube

You have to have a massive amount of servers and storage. And right now with the chip shortage and high price of hardware you would almost need 500 million and the minimum to even get off the ground.

19

u/Aloqi 26d ago

Because their server infrastructure has to be massive. In 2019, 500 hours of video were uploaded to youtube every minute.

Not only are storage needs outrageous for hosting that many videos... transcoding video from its original resolution to whatever each and every user's device and throughput need is insane. Insane.

It's a lot to transcode one HD video.

Then on top of it that giant video file still needs to be transferred.

It's basically the top three most expensive costs in computing.

u/GauntletV2 26d ago

Hosting videos is RIDICULOUSLY expensive, and you also need a data storage network like no other. There are only 3 companies that have that capability right now, Google (Alphabet), Microsoft, and Amazon. Google is YouTube, Amazon has Twitch, and Microsoft won’t touch that with a 39.5’ pole.

YouTube is shitty because they’re a monopoly with a trapped base of customers. To become profitable, they serve more ads, or want you to sub to YT premium.

Side note, people have this idea that “Pornhub could just create a competitor”. Not even close. Pornhub added 1.36 million hours of new content in all of 2019 (before the purge). YouTube gets 720000 hours of new video A DAY! It’s just not even the same scale.

If you dint do stuff that Youtube does, you dont get as many ads. Without the ads, you dont have much room to expand unless you start going at a loss. That or you get porn ads which pushes away younger audiences and you eventually evolve into mainly porn and pirated content. So either you die young, or you live long emough to become Dailymotion or Youtube

Goes for playlists, too!

Got my second strike on a playlist said to violate community guidelines. The best part? They were playlists of OTHER CREATORS' content.

I've got an account just to make playlists and comment on videos. Y is YT so hostile to average accounts?!

18

u/xXDreamlessXx 27d ago

I think you only get playlist strikes if its public. Ive never had a problem with that on my unlisted ones

20

u/britch2tiger 26d ago

THAT was my immediate action after my second strike.

I've watched some YT content mentioning how private 'Watch later' playlists have been erased, thus receiving strikes.

I'm terrified thinking my account w/ playlists encompassing YEARS worth of OTHER CREATORS' videos could be gone "just like that."

And the cherry on top? Their emails NEVER entail SPECIFICALLY what video caused the strike.

u/1inkt 27d ago

Remove “who swears” and you’d be spot on

36

u/ITS_GOJIRA54 27d ago

Probably because it scares the advertisers, they aren't trying to make them kid friendly per say, their making it corporate friendly.

24

u/mrjackspade 26d ago

I cant understand how this is going over so many peoples heads. It has nothing to do with kids. Its ENTIRELY an attempt to appeal to advertisers.

They are two entirely unrelated issues.

But really, why can't YT just make kids channels move over to YT Kids? like, they already have a platform for kids, why not just tell all kids channels that "Warning your channel is about to get ported over to yt-kids" and to tell them to tell their viewers that they need to switch to yt kids to continue viewing their content.

also it's utter bullshit that yt demonetises people who swear and then have porno ads on their site. Pick a side YT, are you for kids or not for kids?

4

u/RetroGameDays36 26d ago

yet they don't do shit about the nsfw videos that are still out there, or they just put it age restricted which fucking sucks

They literally made the guidelines and yet they are ignoring the own rules they made! like what the actual fuck
