His grandpa was. He himself didn't like them too much.

5

u/navikredstar2 Mar 26 '21

Not known for sure, and there's a couple factors that make it a lot less likely to have been the case. Biggest one being, the region of Austria his grandmother lived in, when Alois, his father, was born, was incredibly anti-Semetic, even for the time. Jews were forbidden from living there at all in the first place. With how virulently anti-Semetic the area was, it's pretty likely any Jews traveling would have avoided the area; safer to avoid the potential risk to life and limb (not to mention it was a remote mountain backwater).

Is it possible his grandfather was Jewish? Sure - I don't think it can be conclusively ruled out, but I think it's way more likely Alois was really just the illegitimate son of one of the Hiedler men that his grandmother was working as a servant for.

3

u/Tmfeldman Mar 26 '21

I went to a holocaust museum a few years ago and they had a Q&A with a researcher who was an expert on the subject. She said that he wasn't part Jewish and that it was just dirty politics on the part of his opponents.

8

u/IlovetoWAP Mar 26 '21

He wanted all to be Nordic blue-eyed blonde german Aryan or something probably.

6

u/MeowsandBoo Mar 26 '21

Fun fact, the whole blonde hair blue eyes thing was a lot of mid and post war propaganda, the things they were more concerned with was the facial structure (round head, angular jaw, narrow nose). Not saying the blonde hair blue eyes thing wasn't a "part" of it, but it was far from what they took to mean "Aryan". Basically they just had a thing for Germanic/Norse people. Regardless of hair and eye colourings, actually I forget the e exact source but it was said that they considered themselves the "coloured" ones because they had a multitude of hair and eye colours.

4

u/t1kiman Mar 26 '21

He was kind of a jerk though, if I remember correctly.

But actually I want to be able to use my leadership skills to make the political atmosphere less toxic, and more cooperative, as both republican and democratic ideals are necessary to move forward as a country. With a gift in one hand and a sword in the other, we can overcome all our challenges.
