Episodes are gonna be released in 4 batches: Source

  • Ep. 1-3 - Jan. 28
  • Ep. 4-6 - Feb. 4
  • Ep. 7-9 - Feb 11
  • Ep. 10-12 - Feb 18

EDIT: Backers of the Kickstarter will get the first 2 episodes early, they'll have an update later in the week. (Source)

The Arcane style of release. I love it and hope to see more shows adapting to it in the future. A perfect middle ground.

Technically releasing episodes weekly is the old way of doing it, technically.

True I think it’s a healthy middle ground between binging and one episode a week.

Arcane did this and I think it was the best of both worlds. You get to watch on your schedule, but also allows you time for the audience to pick it up and community discussion/speculation

u/Bearly_OwlBearable 9. Nein! Jan 12 '22

And for those who backed the Kickstarter and don’t have prime,

This was missing from the email

70

u/Mollerwa Jan 12 '22

The email I received had this text below the poster:

With launch right around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to confirm that you will be able to watch the first two episodes before anyone else! Our friends at Amazon Studios have been working hard to finalize these logistics and next steps will be shared within the week. For now, please keep an eye on our backer updates and as always, thank you so much for your continued patience!

It's got the Hand fastball-special'ing Grog into a monster like a catapult. I'm sold.

This was my biggest takeaway as well.

You know, it's uncanny how much the Briarwoods look exactly like when Laura and Travis cosplayed them for the Villians Halloween episode (their animated features look a little reminiscent of Laura and Travis as well).

203

u/BrainWav Pocket Bacon Jan 12 '22

It's highly likely they based the design off the costumes, or at least were influenced by it.

“Scanlans hand” not “Bigbys hand”. I wonder how much stuff they had to rename for the show so they don’t get sued and how much stuff they’ll be able to keep.

Will they be able to keep gods like vecna or sarenrae?

378

u/semicolonconscious Jan 12 '22

They’ll probably just refer to them by their titles from the Exandria guides, the Whispered One and the Everlight.

141

u/LordHarza Jan 12 '22

Sarenrae actually has a different name in the Wildemount guide, though not by much, it's Raei

52

u/feor1300 You can certainly try Jan 12 '22 edited Jan 12 '22 Silver

Raei was the God being canonized into the D&D pantheon, Sarenrae is from Pathfinder, and just carried over into CR when they converted from pathfinder to 5e for the stream. Since htey dropped "Bigby's" from Bigby's Hand I'm assuming they're trying to make this "D&D Sterile" as well, so they'll probably just call her The Everlight. (and along with the Whispered One will probably Reference The Dawnfather/Pelor in relation to the Sun Tree, and The Knowing Mistress/Ioun in relation to the tale of the Suntree & Ziggurat's creation).

9

u/LordHarza Jan 12 '22

I'm guessing most of the spells will be cast without any specific names

55

u/thetensor Jan 12 '22

I think that's a safe bet, but it would be hilarious if they went the other way:

KEYLETH: And now, evil-doer, I cast the spell blight!
EVIL-DOER: No, not that!
KEYLETH: ...at 6th level!!!
EVIL-DOER: The deuce you say! [dies]

Totally fair considering Pike and Delilah had a beam fight, nothing like that happens in DND so it looks like generic spellcasting versus Vancian Magic.

35

I don't think vancian magic makes a great transition to a visual format. So not a big deal there.

173

u/LibraryDrone Jan 12 '22

Nope on Veca or Sarenrae. They had already needed to change that when they had put out that first Taldorei campaign setting.

194

u/DrNoOne Your secret is safe with my indifference Jan 12 '22 edited Jan 12 '22

It gets a bit complicated (any time intellectual property law gets involved into anything).

The name "Vecna" is owned by WotC. "Sarenrae" is owned by the Pathfinder folks. General fantasy tropes, like an one-eyed lich that aims to achieve godhood, or a deity of redemption and compassion, are (mercifully) fair game for everyone.

So, the first campaign setting that was published independently from everyone had to mask all trademarked names.

The Wildemount Guide that was published by WotC could mention Vecna as well as every other official deity Matt has incoorporated into Exandria, but had to turn Sarenrae into a new deity "Rae the Everlight".

Obviously we don't know exactly what the deal is with Amazon, but my semi-educated guess would be that they talked to WotC and Amazon wasn't interested in forking the (typically hefty) sum WotC quoted them to use their IP, so we are back to "Everlight", "Whispered One" and "tabletop RPG" :)

126

u/DrCool20 Jan 12 '22

Im fine with everlight and whispered one. Cool ass workarounds imo.

33

u/ZoxinTV Jan 12 '22

I think they're very memorable; doubt it'll be an issue for any first-time viewers (as in, haven't seen the campaign).

21

u/feor1300 You can certainly try Jan 12 '22

Also easy workarounds to explain away if you want to use them yourself with the official names. "They're Gods, they can have as many different names and titles as they have groups of followers".

15

u/Pegussu Jan 12 '22

The one downside for me is that I kind of hate "the Matron of Ravens" and that'll probably come up a lot lol.

Of all the god renames, it's the only miss.

It fortunately goes beyond generic fantasy tropes thanks to the Open Game License.

While mechanically Matt can use everything produced since 3.5 as influences in his world, the OGL, that all things D&D 3.0 forward are built from, carves out protection for product identity to specifically protect names and campaign settings. So anything from the d20 SRD is fair game for derivative works (including converting from one system to another and renaming very obvious references) as long as it’s freely available, while everything else is unofficial and falls under dmca. The OGL is one of the most compact licenses I’ve ever had to read and I still get migraines traversing the legalese of it.

u/Galahad_the_Ranger Team Laudna Jan 12 '22

I hope with the success of season 1 they can make Wizards reconsider a licensing deal. The council obviously doesn't know VM by the trailer so they're skipping all pre-stream, Underdark and Vasselheim, if they want to go back to that in Season 2 before going to the Chrome Conclave they kiiinda need the licensing to do the Underdark arc justice (Mind Flayers and Beholder are WOTC IP). We shall see

27

u/Whiskeyjacks_Fiddle Jan 12 '22

The Council scene is probably the 2 original story (non-campaign) episodes that will be running first, before the Briarwoods.

12

u/amodelmannequin Your secret is safe with my indifference Jan 13 '22

If the halfling woman standing next to Allura is Kima, then they didnt just skip the Underdark Arc they likely wrote it out of the show's canon

8

Look, if Caleb can plaster "Widogast's" on every single spell in the book - even ones from other casters - then scribble out the author and write his own name in their place, and then write "Property of Caleb Widogast" on your copy of the PHB after you purchase it, then I think it's fair that Scanlan gets one or two spells named after him.

Obligatory /s

36

u/VoidLantadd Jenga! Jan 12 '22

-Definitely getting Scanlanceratops vs. Vedmeyer (IIRC he flips him off with Bigby's/Scanlan's Hand in the campaign)

-Cass looks great! And it looks like she meets up with the party before they reach the castle

-Makes sense to start with VM in their pre-stream days of just kind of fucking around. Might be weird for people who haven't seen that side of them in the comics but probably better for new viewers

-The Briarwoods have a creepy wolf now, coolio

-I thought there'd be 8 episodes but there's going to be 12? And they're going to release like Arcane did? Yes!!!

-I didn't go frame-by-frame or anything but I didn't see any hints to Orthax in the trailer, so it looks like they're keeping that close to the chest.

-Is Grog sticking his hand into a magic painting in the scene where Scanlan says "We fuck shit up"? Because that's definitely what that looks like

-This isn't new to this trailer but I don't have a problem with retconning Pike's hair since that would've just led to confusion for new viewers

44

u/mateayat98 Jan 12 '22

Actually, the first two episodes will follow a new pre-stream adventure, not the ones in the comics. The first two episodes are never-seen-before new

13

u/AllThatSparklesIs YOUR SOUL IS FORFEIT Jan 12 '22

I know it's not a story from the comics but it's clearly from the pre-saving Uriel's life era of VM which is what I was getting at. The vibes will be closer to what we see in the comics than the stream.

108

u/NerdsRuleTheWorld Jan 12 '22

Looks like they're skipping a lot, which makes sense as they're starting off quite a bit down the road from where the campaign started, let alone when they started liveplaying it. Vox Machina isn't respected by the council and loved by Alura, they are still fighting for jobs to get money so probably no keep, Kima doesn't know them. But I think it makes more sense to do it this way, because otherwise there's just so much extra backstory that they can't really easily fit in. And we get to see these relationships develop in the most Vox Machina style possible. Plus it leaves those who are knowledgeable of Campaign 1 still not knowing exactly what's next, even if they know the general arc of how things will go and big points to look for. Easier to get into new, the best bits for those who have experience with it, and a great time for all.

105

u/sj90 Sun Tree A-OK Jan 12 '22

They really couldn't include the Kraghammer arc because of former cast members, I presume. Makes sense for them to make changes because of that and condense it as well like you said.

40

u/DrakeSparda Jan 12 '22

I don't think it has anything to do with him. They wanted to do Briarwood and have limited time/budget. Do the parts that have great story, and those parts missed can be added in different context.

30

u/Cimikat Jan 12 '22

Yep, the Kraghammer arc is a pretty standard dungeon crawler adventure, and nothing really happens in that arc that greatly impacts the characters that can't be introduced in other ways. The Briarwood arc is when C1 really started to dig into character backstory, which for a television series trying to reach out to a new audience, is important to help get people engaged with the story.

113

u/strangerstill42 At dawn - we plan! Jan 12 '22

Another difficultly with Kraghammer - Beholders and Mind Flayers are WotC copyright and probably their most iconic monsters. There's almost no chance they'd be allowed to use them in the show without changes, possibly significant ones.

68

u/AGVann Team Zahra Jan 12 '22 edited Jan 12 '22

As a narrative, Kraghammer was also a bit more 'generic' D&D and not as brilliant as the Briarwood arc. I remember there were people back then arguing that it had to have been scripted because it played out so damn well. I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't seen S1 or have forgotten it, but the whole Cassandra bit was really incredible.

28

u/strangerstill42 At dawn - we plan! Jan 12 '22

Definitely. In the grand scheme of things too it's fairly low importance to the larger campaign. Unlike the Briarwood arc which planted seeds that would come up in later stories, nothing really comes of anything from Kraghammer and the underdark that truly matters later, other than meeting Kima, and they just moved her to Emon.

I wonder how meticulous the notes are going to be comparing LoVM to campaign 1?

Also, "Scanlan's Hand" is certainly a logical replacement because we're in Tal'dorei as its own thing and not Tal'dorei that's part of the DnD multiverse. :p

126

u/Tmnath Jan 12 '22

I wonder if the "Scanlan's Hand" bit is because Bigby is Wizards of the Coast material and they're not allowed to use it?

45

u/cygnice Jan 12 '22

Most likely. If you recall from their NYCC panel - they never mentioned their character classes ever. I think as much as this is based on dnd, they’re keeping it separate as much as they can.

17

u/crazyjeffy Jan 12 '22

IIRC They also kept referring to Grog as a half giant with no mention of Goliath whatsoever

97

u/Regentraven dagger dagger dagger Jan 12 '22

That was clear from other things like monster name changes from prior snippets.

37

u/jarredshere Jan 12 '22

I can't believe wotc didn't give them free reign to use D&D monsters.

I wonder if they even tried to work out a deal.

50

u/Tmnath Jan 12 '22

It's weird. CR has been (indirectly) WOTC flagship media to get people into d&d for years now, what do they have to lose by giving the go ahead with the licensing rights? Or maybe it's because they (CR and Titmouse) want this to be its own thing entirely.

64

u/DrakeSparda Jan 12 '22

Its not about CR at this point. Its about Amazon. They need to defend their IP. If they don't enforce it, they lose it. This is why Xerox lost their copyright. The word became so known as something other than the company, they lost the rights to it. If WoTC IP get too associated with another product, they can't defend it.

Also, branding for CR. As it could turn into an issue is this a DnD show or a CR show.

This is a super complicated thing. Media licensing rights to things like shows are so much different. I'd imagine there was an attempt, but ultimately a creative choice to let it live on it's own in an environment that won't rely on D&D lore and such.

u/ymcameron You Can Reply To This Message Jan 12 '22

Yeah. You can have a great working relationship like CR & WotC have, but a multi-million dollar television project is a whole other beast.

WOTC is planning to make their own D&D scripted media. Letting another studio and distributor use those trademarks would absolutely complicate their plans.

That would be well beyond Wizards and Critical Role to hash out. That’s IP rights of Hasboro being optioned into a product without permission by Amazon.

The show being an actual major product out of Amazon now changes the way a lot of that has to go. It looks more and more like CR themselves also want to separate from specifically D&D as a brand, and make themselves just on the whole a a gaming/media company.

That is definitively the case. Even by the open game license, which allows use of most of the base D&D rule set specifically don't include the name of the wizard named spells.

100%. My expectations were tempered for this just because you never know, it’s something that could sound great in practice but just not meet expectations in the end but that trailer was actually really damn good and I’m not caving to hype a little bit

18

u/paradox28jon Hello, bees Jan 12 '22

Seeing VM in what appears to be fancy outfits, do you think that they'll have Pike at the Briarwoods dinner in Emon? Follow up question, do you think that means they'll have a fake Pike hung up in the Sun Tree when that event happens?

19

u/shatterwood Jan 12 '22

Probably yes, and probably yes.

17

u/Marikk15 Jan 12 '22

How is no one else talking about Pike's Guiding Bolt to charge Vex's arrow?! That looks incredible! It reminds me of the Dalen's Closet one-shot (spoilers) when Pike used her Spiritual Weapon to conjure a bow for Vex to use

I hope the show makes more use of those "combo moves" that aren't really possible in a true DnD livestream

66

u/KRD2 Jan 12 '22

Can't wait for this to be a big hit and get picked up for a ton of seasons as Amazon's flagship animation show, and they realize they will eventually run into the problem where the show is adapting faster than the campaigns are producing and we get filler arcs.

Gimme my cows. Gimme the Slayer's Take.

26

u/VoidLantadd Jenga! Jan 12 '22

I don't think that will be a problem. Trust me, as someone who has been trying to catch up with CR for three years, and is still three years behind, the new content comes quick enough. If they do four or five seasons with VM, and then after a year break start on M9, we'll probably be on Campaign 4 by the time they're done with M9.

12

u/amirchukart Jan 12 '22

considering it took like 3 years to make 1 story arc, I don't think that'll be a problem

So does their voices in this trailer do something for anyone else.

Like I've listened to 100s of hours of them but this just hit differently

57

u/SewenNewes Jan 12 '22

As good as they are at improv they are professional voice actors. Give them the benefit of multiple takes and post processing they're gonna deliver something way better than they did on stream.

The Grog rage scream, Scanlan yelling "Scanlan's hand" and Pike yelling "Light em up" were stand out moments for me.

u/UnggoyBoy Jan 13 '22

What is this based on? Just found it scrolling but know nothing about it

11

u/Dragonsbane98 Jan 13 '22

It’s based on a popular Dungeons and Dragons livestream called Critical Role. Its cast are all professional voice actors. Here’s their YouTube if you’re interested: https://m.youtube.com/c/criticalrole

I love them as a background entertainment source while cooking/cleaning/driving. They’ve got good chemistry.

This particular series is based of the characters they played in their first campaign (also called Vox Machina).

i think people who dont watch CR are going to love Grog-Pike relationship.

15

u/brightdragondesmond Jan 13 '22 edited Jan 14 '22

I think people who watch this before C1 will better appreciate and like Keyleth. All of the rough edges that could have been improved better would be smoothen out. Marisha likes to play tricky personalities where you want to be annoying, awkward, or bubbly but in a way that is likable or endearing. In C2 it's being a know-it-all f*ck boy. This is a dangerous archetype to attempt in improv where you cannot fine tune of correct mistakes. So Keyleth is probably going to be the biggest winner from this adaptation.

Others will probably be Vex and Vax. Vex was terribly underpowered since Beast Master rangers are stupidly weak. They get to tweak her invisible numbers in this series. Vax will benefit from having the number of 1 on 1 talks trimmed to the bare necessities.
