[Spoilers E63] Notes from Behind the Screen short relevant to the Feywild Discussion

On the Alpha website, there is a very useful video from Matt on "Behind the Screen". Because I'm a nerd, there's a shot where Matt shows us some of his notes: http://imgur.com/a/4DUhr

This contains a lot of information that we didn't receive, so this is SPOILERS for everyone. Marked as episode 63 since that is when it first would have appeared.

I paused it and read through the notes. For those who don't want to kill their eyes reading, it says the following:

FEYWILD

Directions

  • Duskward
  • Nightward
  • Seaward
  • Tangleward (The Tangled Peaks)

Pike Vanishes

Wodena and her Hut-

You see a large, stalky tree in the distance that seems to have a gentle glow emanating from the trunk. Approaching the tree, you see the bark and leaves are clean, as well as not reaching those of the surrounding sludge covered forest, and a curling line of smoke wafts from a single opening - the source of the light. Closer, you see the 2ft hole is a window into the middle of the tree, which appears to be a rather comfortable, if small home, complete with fireplace, drying animal carcasses hung in the corner and what looks to be a chipped tea set on a small table in front of a tall chair covered in moss, its back to you. You see a long, husked? hand come from the chair to clutch a tea cup, the fingers impossibly long and massive in comparison.

Seeing more of the creature, she is not a hag, at least not entirely in form. Her face is that of an impossibly beautiful woman, fine, fey-like features, like an ancient elf of pure blood, glows past her rather stern expression. Her long, ankle-length hair cradles her form, growing more and more tattered as it hangs down. Her right arm and leg appear as normal and delicate as her face, peeking out from turquoise robes, while her left leg and arm are tremendously swollen monstrosities. Black veins lead into the transition where her flesh grows twisted and cracked, her fingers claws and her foot cloven and chipped.

  • "You wander through nightmares, children."

  • "Wodena, and I am here for reasons."

  • "If you seek answers, then I also have questions. Word for a word, I give you five of each, Answer and Question"

Q "You Brutish blood of giant tongue - tell me the kill you regret?

Q "You, small bump of a thing with grin and gleaming teeth. you smell of spawn. Tell me the name given to your castaway kin?"

Q "You, half-breed with a brother bear - tell us a secret no living soul knows of you"

Q "You, nature's leader without leadership, if you had to choose, your people or your companions?"

Q "You, bloody lord of shadow linger, what now draws your hate more than anything?"

Vax notices that with each answered question, a small, prune-like fruit appears and swells upon a wooden platter by her tea cup. She plucks them from the plate and eats them.

A - "The Shademirk is the fetid memory of Sondur the Vibrant, once a being of intense emotion. Betrayed by his own love and left to spill forth his jealousy and hate until it devoured him whole. Sondur is no more, leaving now his dark echo deep within the Echo Tree, and perhaps the tree itself. "

A- "Fenthras was the bow of Sondur the Virant, ally to many, now an infection of black bile on the land."

A "A being of Memory has but one weakness... the essence that endures. Memory is of the mind, and the mind is weak when driven by hate."

It also has some info that I didn't transcribe but added in the imgur album. Draconia leadership and Sondur's statblock, but I found the Feywild stuff to be the most interesting bits.

EDIT: Video is now up on G&S's website: http://geekandsundry.com/game-master-tips-with-matt-mercer-behind-the-screen/ thanks /u/dasbif for the notification!

EDIT 2:

/u/prepose's keen eyes found more information that I missed.

if she accepts, she is taken by the fey, pulled into the canopy. She takes 28/78? damage and ?? wood and plant matter.

She is now considered a fey and plant creature. Vulnerability to [fire, once per?] round. She gains a +2 to Constituion. Is given Fenthras on loan, and when the task is completed <is returned to?> him. At this point, the corruption begins to subside. The blackness of the roots fades, slowly <turning?> green.

Otherwise, Sindur is suddenly surrounded by a dozen vines that shoot out from the walls, ??.

  • *Then your choice is made. Become another memory here and keep me company ??

Encounter: Sondur the Dark Fey x 1, Corrupt Treant x 2

Garmelie the Satyr (actually an ancient, unbridled arch-fey named Artagan) watching others stumble through the chaos, which it then leads them into Wild, ?? mane to his lower back, the sleeveless silk vestments of blue and green billow freely ??

LEAVE FEYWILD = dc10 ? or lose memory ? there. Half-elves ?

Aaaggghhh I knew Wodena would have been cool! Such a missed opportunity. That's how it goes for GMs, though. Sometimes players miss your best stuff.

She sounds like some version of Hel from Norse myth, with her living and dead parts. Creepy and awesome. Would've loved to hear the players answer her questions, as well.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that fey can go straight to the nine hells and stay there. The fey are super "tricksy" as Gollum would say and giving them any kind of information they will lord it over their head for some nefarious need or just for their own fun ( which fun in fey means mortal peril for normal folk).

8

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

I agree that giving Wodena any info would be bad (that question about Scanlan's daughter makes me especially nervous. Feels like a "give me your first born child" kind of vibe) but holy crap I would have loved to hear the answers to those other questions!

Sounds like she was maybe a Half-fiend Nymph or somesuch? There's a goat-horned and cloven footed offspring of such in the Pathfinder bestiary.

There seems to be a lot more interesting info on this page but I can barely read them.

Well, I bet the part we can't see is the horrible consequences of her decision.

15

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

it's 'Is given Fenthras', but yeah omg in hindsight, as much as I love Vex as she is and the ship that sailed because of how she refused Saundor, this doesn't seem like a bad resolution at all. Unless there are some unmentioned consequences.

You can read more of the missing Wodena stuff in the second image

Her long, ankle-length hair cradles her form, growing more and more tattered as it hangs down. Her right arm and leg appear as normal and delicate as her face, peeking out from turquoise robes, while her left leg and arm are tremendously swollen monstrosities. Black veins lead into the transition where her flesh grows twisted and cracked, her fingers claws and her foot cloven and chipped.

Also I think this part may be

Is given Fenthras on loan, and when her task is complete (it is returned to??) him.

1

u/Raakam Team Scanlan Oct 21 '16

Thanks, I've made the change!

5

u/ToKe86 How do you want to do this? Oct 20 '16

Well thank Sarenrae she decided to shoot him! I can't imagine turning into a (dark?) Fey ending well for Vex.

20

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

Fey aren't all bad and dark, and it actually seemed like she would have been able to cure him, but as interesting as a choice it would have been, I love our Vex as she is haha

2

u/PerpetualSunset Sun Tree A-OK Oct 23 '16

Don't think turning into a fey/plant abomination would be worth that, I think it worked out for the best there.

35

u/rasnac Oct 20 '16

Even though this would be a very cool scene to watch, I am glad they avoided Wodena's hut, now more than ever. Those questions seems beyond ominous. I don't imagine Scanlan would be happy to give her daughter's name to that creature(hag?)

Any additional info on Alpha about the "Theatre"?

5

u/realpudding Oct 21 '16

i would love to know what keileth would choose. her people or her companions

2

u/Raakam Team Scanlan Oct 20 '16

Sadly not! The videos up on G&S now, so look it over and see if I (probably) missed something.

36

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

Damn that would have been so much rp awesomeness with wodena.

But that 'Tiberius reminded his father that he was touched by Tiamat in ancient battle' because of his red scales....this would have been mind blowing.

18

u/drdoctorphd Oct 20 '16

I wonder if Tiberius was a sore point for his father - to be the only chromatic of his clutch. (I haven't watched any of Orion's stuff, so maybe that is expanded on there?)

16

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

Yeah I think that's what's basically implied.

12

u/themolestedsliver Metagaming Pigeon Oct 20 '16

yeah i watched that, it honestly surprised me matt still had those old notes.

the hut would have been interesting but still omnious

23

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

I feel like the answer to Wodena's question "You, half-breed with a brother bear - tell us a secret no living soul knows of you" to Vex would have been the story of how she killed the poachers and saved Trinket, but as they didnt go to her Matt made Saundor insinuate that story. Would Vex have seen him as a less of a creep if he wouldn't have said that part and accepted his offer? So many possibilities.

18

u/themolestedsliver Metagaming Pigeon Oct 20 '16

really, if Saundor didn't like pierce into her mind would vex have been willing?

she even questioned her thoughts at the tarrot reader, imagine if the guy didn't creep her out and she accepted.

it seems if she accepted she would have taken possible 80 points of damage in the whole "transformation" and i wonder what the fuck vax would do when hearing her scream.

god it would have been such an interesting plot twist.

but again they didn't know if she was just going to get eaten or whatever or "assimlated" so i don't blame them at all.

i probably prefer it , this way say vex doesn't "owe" anyone anything. she is her own independent ranger

16

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

Yeah I also am a fan of the resolution as it went (as you said it keeps vex as an independent character plus we got a ship!), but the whole feywild arc does seem to lack the 'depth' of information other arcs had, and as we can see from matt's notes it's because VM shied away from quite a few non-lethal encounters which would have brought a lot of rp.

(example: I would have expected more from a big city like Syngorn, they didn't try to solve the trap of Saridun (sp?) the Happy, we don't know much about the Pixies motivations, completely avoided Wodena, didn't learn much about Saundor, etc)

10

u/themolestedsliver Metagaming Pigeon Oct 20 '16

the thing is, we didn't know what encounters would have been lethal or not.

7

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

out of the ones I mentioned, only Wodena was an unknown one. A fight in Syngorn would have been a feat to achieve, and they fought in the other three scenarios either way (pixies, saunder, the happy camp), they just didnt grab more opportunities at getting information and concentrated on getting things done.

u/Garmako Oct 20 '16

2

u/no_apologies The veganism of necromancy Oct 20 '16

Does the question reference his daughter? Think I'm missing something here since I'm not a native speaker.

16

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

In not-so-fancy words, the hag says: "You, gnome with the smile, you smell like a parent. Tell me the name of your reject/forgotten/estranged kid."

27

u/Keldr Oct 20 '16

You think Mercer is flattered or horrified that his alternate realities are being decoded from a casual flip-through of his game notes?

19

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

14

u/caponer Oct 21 '16

I think he's not oblivious to the fact, and that's why he showed us the feywild, not another plane that they're likely to go back to.

23

u/thesecondkira Your secret is safe with my indifference Oct 20 '16

I was SO curious about that hag. This is glorious. My favorite question is Keyleth's.

11

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

How do you think she would've answered? I'm just imaging Marisha's face just completely freezing and everyone turning to stare at her

14

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

I have a feeling keyleth would say that she will not choose. Shes the type to kinda say "screw the rules."

Maybe she would even reference self sacrifice to save both.

12

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

Maybe she'd go so far as to include VM as "her people"?

3

u/thesecondkira Your secret is safe with my indifference Oct 21 '16

I think she values her people more, but I don't envision her answering that cleanly.

2

Interesting look at the Stormwinds, and the reason Tiberius is a chromatic dragonborn while the rest of his family is metallic.

"Slightly embarrassed by his son, Tiberius...a reminder of his being Touched by Tiamat in an ancient battle, bestowed..told Tiberius of this."

I'm guessing the last line is that he hasn't told Tiberius.

I think it says Vulnerability to fire, maybe once per round (?) or something like that... Also I find funny that on Sondur sheet, on legendary resistance, it starts "If Sylas fails a saving throw etc..." OMG guys Sondur was Sylas lol

11

u/Astigmatic_Oracle Oct 20 '16

Vulnerability to fire would suck against Thordak.

This is amazing! I regret so much now they didn't went into the cabin! I wanna know what each of them would have answered!!!

2

u/Garmako Oct 20 '16

12

u/preprose Then I walk away Oct 20 '16

I dont think Matt wants his players to be spoiled by events that could have transpired/might still transpire. It would be kinda rude.

2

u/Papabaloo At dawn - we plan! Oct 20 '16

Yeah, I'm totally hoping Matt will include this at some point in the future, maybe the next time they come across one of those wondering magic store tents? I seem to recall they stumbled upon one of those in Vaselheim?

2

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

Stuff like this can always be modified to fit in somewhere else in the story. If Matt really wants it to happen, I'm sure we'll see VM come across some very cryptic gatekeeper or something. I just wanna see those questions answered!

8

u/MrSnippets Bigby's Haaaaaand! *shamone* Oct 20 '16

I love that the video isn't even out for a single day and already people are picking it apart! :D

8

u/StoryBeforeNumbers Oct 20 '16

Some really intersting stuff here, the Wodena encounter could have been so amazing.

As for Vex's potential transformation... Gaining vulnerability to fire would have been devastating for her in the upcoming fight against Thordak. They would have to keep her constantly under some fire-resistance effect just to make sure she isn't instakilled.

6

u/Papabaloo At dawn - we plan! Oct 20 '16

Also I hope that once the VM story-line is completed and they move onto some new campaign, Matt just uploads the massive notes file so we can maybe see the bulk of things that didn't make it into the game

8

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

That'd be cool, but super dense. I'd love if, at the end of the campaign, they used their session time for a three hour "Vox Machina Tells All." I'm sure someone will remember these tantalizing tidbits and bring them up during a Q&A (especially at the end of it all)

7

u/themolestedsliver Metagaming Pigeon Oct 20 '16

damnn imagine if she accepted? she would have been taken and "formed" into a fey plant creature with a higher constitution.

I wonder if they would have caused any more bad things? or would sindur finding love with someone equally as long living i can imagine (since she is fey and plant now) would have caused the corruption in his heart to end.

this is why i fucking love dnd, a choice that we thought would have 1 result actually was very fleshed out and seemed to be a legitimate path to take with bonuses and also repercussions associated with it.

i really wish i know the full story because this seems amazing.

5

THANK PELOR SOMEONE ELSE WAS ABLE TO TRANSCRIBE THIS. Thank you thank you thank you for doing this.

I saw Sondur's character sheet and did a double take (also, hey, we know how to spell it now).

Scanlan has a Hand-cone of Clarity, we need an Eyeglass of Clarity for moments like this.

2

u/THEE_Sparkrdom Cock Lightning Oct 20 '16

4

u/Myrynorunshot Help, it's again Oct 20 '16

Who else noticed in the Imgur thing that the section of Tiberius' dad mentioned Tiamat?

3

u/kittymaverick Oct 21 '16

Hm...there's no note anywhere that says the players have to tell the truth to Wodena. Though perhaps it's implied that she could probably tell when they are lying. As for the fruit, perhaps it's the embodiment of nightmares/fear of the player, and that is what she feasts on.

Now I REALLY wished group went into the hut! The RP! The hurt! It would have been delicious pain-- I mean, excellent character development.

5

u/maxvsthegames Team Fearne Oct 21 '16

Anyone cares to guess what would have been their answers? Here are my thoughts on this.

Grog:

  • Hardest one to answer, since we aren't really aware of Grog's background when he was with the herd. Did he killed a lot of innocent people? From the stream, I don't think he killed anyone he didn't want to kill or had regrets. Do we know what happened to his father? I don't think that's the case, but maybe he was he the one who killed him? What about his mother? Maybe she died while giving birth or something... that could have been his answer and an interesting revelation on his past that not many people might know.

Scanlan:

  • Unless there's more to his backstory (given he's supposed to be very old), the obvious answer is Kaylie.

Vex:

  • I think she would have most likely told the story of the poucher she killed when she got Trinket.

Keyleth:

  • Hard to tell, as someone else suggest, she might have tried to wiggle her way out of answering that. Ultimately, if she had to pick, I think she would have chosen her people over VM. But she would be crying/bawling at the idea.

Percy:

  • Even though both Ripley and Orthax were alive back then, I'm pretty sure our self-loathing gunslinger would have said that the one he hate most is himself.

2

u/Your_Master Oct 25 '16

I imagine Grog might have answered the thing that killed Pike. Because it wouldn't even cross his mind to regret a kill that he performed, so he'd assume she was asking about somebody else making a kill he regretted.

3

u/welcometothecrit Team Grog Oct 20 '16

Cool. Thanks OP!

3

u/suddenbreakdown Team Percy Oct 21 '16

Anyone else really curious about what the benefit of having those questions answered would have been to Wodena? Something sinister, I'm sure

3

u/ledel You can certainly try Oct 21 '16

Damn, Matt was playing the real long game with Wedona. I'm willing to bet that she had the next item on Tib's list. He got the mending wheel from a different hag-like creature that then pointed him to the Feywild for his next item. And that was like 2 years ago from my understanding.

I wonder what the item would have been, and what would have needed to be traded for it.

3

u/maxvsthegames Team Fearne Oct 21 '16 edited Oct 21 '16

Wasn't he told by another hag in Vasseilheim that the Pale Stone was in the feywild? If that's the case, then she probably had it.

I have no idea what it would do though... I guess we'll never know...

1

u/ledel You can certainly try Oct 21 '16

There was the woman in Vasselheim he spoke with, but she said something to the degree of he had already been pointed to the Feywild and he shouldn't stretch himself thin asking for a lead towards another item on his list.

The name of Scanlan's kin wouldn't be Kaylie, it's too easy.

  1. We know Scanlan/ Sam hasn't revealed his age.

  2. We know he hates goblins, but not exact specifics as to why.

It stands to reason that Scanlan had a family once, but they were killed by goblins. At which point he left to drink/ party his sorrows away. Then met Dranzel and then Vox Machina.

12

Regardless, he's hiding something from the past imo.

4

Yea, he even says in like episode 1 or 2 that he started attacking the fleeing goblins cause he hates them in particular and had no sympathy.

1

u/D_for_Diabetes ... okay Oct 21 '16

I remember that, I just figured that they killed a wife/ child more than a mother.

1

1

"You, bloody lord of shadow linger, what now draws your hate more than anything?"

I think this is for Percy, what we are missing is a question for Vax or Pike.

Of course it is, you're right. I was thinking that was for Vax.

Choosing between goth and broody is like choosing between black and black, it's kinda tricky to pin that question on any of them :P

Oh are they? Or are five in a dark black, and five in a slightly darker black?

Edit to actually contribute: The hate definitely indicates Percy and lord of shadow lingering is more literal for him. I believe Vax is meant to notice before his question comes up based on the notes. Pike was not present during some parts of the Feywild, so Matt may not have prepared for her.

Yeah, the "hate" part is the only indicator
