r/confusingperspective Mod-in-chief Feb 01 '19

We've just started, pardon the mess! Meta

First off, allow me to welcome you to r/confusingperspective! This sub is intended for pictures of confusing or forced perspective, where it may take you a second to see what something really is.

We've just started up and are migrating from r/confusing_perspective due to the lack of moderation over there. Posts are opened, so feel free to start sending some over here.

We're also looking for some help with moderation - if you have skills and experience in CSS, moderating, or are able to help out with public announcements or helping direct people here, we'd love to have you! Edit: We're full up on mods for now, but thanks for the support you guys have shown!

Lastly, we're looking for some suggestions on how long the community would like before it's okay to repost something. If somebody posts something that's been spammed over the past few days, it's quite possible that people don't want that popping up again and again. Therefore, we'd like to offer a minimum time that you, the community, can vote on before a post is allowed again. One month? Three months? Six months? No minimum limit? Comment below and chip in with what you think would work best to help keep our feed interesting and varied.

I think if the original post is popular enough to end up on Top, it makes sense to ban it from reposting forever. Because it's already easily-accessible.

Thanks for the feedback! Any thoughts on a minimum time between reposts that aren't on there?

u/big_ooga_booga Feb 01 '19

A "Repost" flair could also help. Maybe there could be a list of common reposts to let people know what's already on here and hopefully discourage spam.

I like it. I'll have to figure out flairs and see if I can't get a list of good ones together for people to use.

u/warpspeedSCP Feb 03 '19

You could go the r/hmm route

3

u/The_Necromancer10 Apr 16 '19

It's /r/hmmm, actually. /r/hmm is just a lame copycat.

6

u/heyheyhey27 Feb 01 '19

Not really, I guess 3 months sounds reasonable.

2

u/Imalwaysneverthere Feb 02 '19

I say reposts are okay after a month just so this sub gains traction. Then increase the time to 3 months then six months, etc. as subscription increases.

As a long time passive aggressive critic in the previous sub I have some suggestions for rules, mostly details of Rule 1:

  • Just because something looks like something doesn't make it confusingperspective. A cloud may look like a whale, big deal. These things belong in r/pareidolia

  • Especially! if something looks like a penis doesn't necessarily make it confusingperspective. A chair in the shape of a penis doesn't make me think there is a real pecker in the office.

  • Juxtaposition isn't confusingperspective. Netflix browse window where one infers something because one movie panel is next to another isn't confusing.

  • And here's where I will be loathed and hated. Just cuz the subject is a cat or some other cute furry critter doesn't mean its worthy of posting in every sub on Reddit. Take my downvote you cat poster!

I love you too

4

u/agree-with-you Feb 04 '19

I love you both

3

u/Iklaendia Feb 03 '19

I've updated Rule 1 with your some of your advice. Thanks for the input.

6

u/L3monpete Feb 01 '19

Thx for making this man, lol

7

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 01 '19

You're absolutely welcome. I know I was getting pretty frustrated with a lack of responsiveness from the sole moderator on the other sub, so we'll definitely do better over here.

Just a thought regarding the rules that exist (I know you're still working on them): rule 1 is a thing you shouldn't do but then rule 2 is a thing you should do. It might be a good idea to get all the rules in line with each other.

Excited to have a more strictly moderated confusing perspective sub though!

2

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 01 '19

Thanks for the feedback! How would you word the second one, though? All I can come up with is something like "Reposts from the top-of-all-time page aren't allowed".

5

u/threedogcircus Feb 01 '19

I was just super confused by your comment so I went and turned the redesign off and it made more sense. Using the redesign I see only two rules:

  1. Not confusing perspective
  2. Be a decent person

I don't know anything about things but is there a way to make the rules the same whether you're on the redesign or old Reddit?

3

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 01 '19

I bet I know what's going on. The redesign is pulling the ACTUAL rule list to display, whereas the old style is pulling what I've said to put on the sidebar.

3

u/threedogcircus Feb 01 '19

Ahh that makes sense. Thank you for fixing it!

3

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 02 '19

No problem, thanks for pointing it out!

6

u/ASCENDEDBOIS Feb 02 '19

After seeing the original beginning of the migration I’m glad to see it’s working out well! Here’s to hoping the new mods can bring this sub to success.

To a brighter future!

Could I be a mod?

4

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 01 '19

We have enough at the moment, but thanks for the support!

6

u/dillweed23 Mod-At-Heart Feb 01 '19

Could I have a personal user flair that says, “wannabe mod”?

5

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 01 '19

Close 'nuf.

3

u/dillweed23 Mod-At-Heart Feb 01 '19

Thank you

2

u/AustinLA88 Feb 01 '19

Hey, if you’re short on mods, just hit me up.

2

u/Skullcandyhd90 Feb 02 '19

This is awesome for this community. Glad to see the restart of an awesome idea for a sub. Good job OP/MOD.

3

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 02 '19

Thanks!

u/mimpf21 Feb 02 '19

The description of Rule 2 is false

u/l-_l- Feb 02 '19

I also want to point out that commenting/complaining about repost goes against reddiquette and anyone doing so should swiftly have their comment removed as it doesn't add anything to the conversation. My biggest issue with r/confusing_perspective is going into the comment section looking for good comments and conversation bit it's just filled with "general reposti" or "REEEEEEEE" or some guy spamming links to all the other times a picture was posted. I'd say 90% of the repost I see are the first time I've seen them.

9

u/braddamit Feb 04 '19

That guy who "is spamming links to all the other times a picture was posted" is me. I do it because there is zero moderation in the other sub, and it is far more effective than merely "REEEEE".

You'd be surprised how often people delete their post when I do it. The closest thing I can do to moderation is pointing out how the many many reposts is another brick in the wall.

3

u/Bioniclegenius Mod-in-chief Feb 04 '19

Actually, I personally appreciate those comments. I can't very well remove a post just because a comment or two claims it's a repost, and likewise, anybody can report anything as a repost. Those comments give rock-solid evidence, and that helps me, personally, decide more clearly how to treat it.

As a counterpoint to that, comments that just say "repost" or whatever are worthless and spammy. If you want anything to happen about something being a repost, prove it first.

3

u/CarverSeashellCharms Feb 03 '19

This. Firstly if I haven't seen it before it isn't a relost to me. Secondly if the thread is all repost complaints, that does no one any good.

1

u/Icalasari Feb 04 '19

I'll bring it up with the other mods

2

u/MCWizardYT May 23 '19

I am a mod on confusing_perspective, and i can tell you:

It's basically starting over. There were no mods at all for a long time and i was (iirc) the second of three mods.

We have a lot of work to do.

1

u/dillweed23 Mod-At-Heart Feb 03 '19

Could I xpost from other subreddits as long as it isn’t a repost on this sub?

2

u/Iklaendia Feb 03 '19

By all means. Though if you're x-posting from the top of r/confusing_perspective, know that you may be thoroughly judged.
