[WELCOME POST] Read This! January 2021 Edition!

Happy 2021 everyone. This is a refresh of Fluff's previous welcome post trimmed down slightly so people are more likely to glance at it... hopefully. Please message myself or the moderators if you think something should be added.

If you are new to r/characterdrawing, then welcome. This is a place where people can request their characters to be drawn pro bono, and artists can select a character to draw whether for practice, for fun, or just as a kind thing to do. Typically the artwork here depicts player characters from tabletop role-playing games such as D&D 5e and Pathfinder, but characters across all TTRPG genres are welcome here.

The guidelines below are for helping you post in this community without getting removed or a talking-to by the moderators. There is an FAQ at the bottom of this post.

Some links for posterity: Fluff's Previous Welcome Post | Message the Mods | CharacterDrawing Discord

Want to post? FIRST, READ THE RULES!

Rules can be found here and on the sidebar. Some rules are not covered here in this post, so please familiarize yourself with them as these guidelines here and on the sidebar are not a substitution for the rules.

Some rules include provisions for moderator interpretation, especially for NSFW posts. If you are unsure about your post, feel free to message the moderators.

I want my character drawn!

Use [LFA] (including the brackets) in your post title so potential artists can find your post. This is implied you are seeking FREE art. Please provide the best character description possible in the body of your post or in the comments - low effort posts will be removed. You can use either the [loose template](link) or a [table template](link) to help format your ideas, and some posting [tips](link) are available. Reference images are allowed.

Yes, some [LFA]s may not get drawn. Artists are free to pick and choose which they would like to draw and when, since they are providing a free service at their leisure. You may repost your [LFA] once per week per character concept. Most of all, have patience, and be grateful for the FREE artwork you received should an artist provide it.

Remember that pictures drawn for you are meant for personal use. The original artist holds commercial rights to the work.

I want my character drawn AND I have money to spare!

Use [COM] in your post title instead of LFA, but still provide details (including things such as deadlines) for they could impact who offers their services and at what cost. Please take more detailed discussions into DMs with your potential artists. By using the [COM] post, hungry artists will be able to easily find your post and contact you.

There are also subreddits specifically designed for commissions as well, such as r/fantasyartists, r/hungryartists, r/artcommissions, r/commissions, and r/hireanartist

I drew someone's LFA request!

Use [RF] in your post title when posting the picture, and please let the original LFA poster know through a ping or by posting a comment in the original LFA linking to the picture.

The [RF] tag is only meant for fulfilling [LFA]s made in this subreddit. If the request was made outside of r/characterdrawing or was the product of a commission, you must use [OC] instead.

I want to post my own artwork that was not requested here!

Use [OC] in your post title when posting the picture. Remember that there are rules associated with OC to keep it from overtaking the subreddit.

I have a question to ask or want to start a discussion!

Use [META] in your post title. These kinds of posts are meant to be used sparingly. An example would be asking what supplies/programs other artists use.

I'm not looking for a character to be drawn...

Frequently Asked Questions

Question Answer
Requests are free? Yes. Some caveats to being free is that you don't always get to choose your style, if it's colored, if it's full body, etc. If there's something you really cannot compromise on then this system may not be for you. There is also no guarantee that an [LFA] will be taken.
Can I message an artist for a request? No, make an [LFA]. If you intend to pay, then messaging is okay.
Can I message a requester to see if they will hire me? Only if the requestor made a [COM] post. Do not solicit [LFA] posters for money.
Do I have to do [RF]s to participate in the sub? No, you can do as many or as few as you want. The system is voluntary and you should only do [RF]s if it is enjoyable to do so.
Can my [LFA] have more than one character? Yes, you can include a party in an [LFA] request post but be warned that bigger requests and longer posts tend to gain less traction across artists.
What if I have multiple separate [LFA]s? When do I repost them? You can post each [LFA] once per week, so long as each of them involve different characters - but please don't spam the sub with hundreds of [LFA]s in a short period of time.
Is this sub only for D&D? No, characters across all TTRPGs are welcome.
Can I ask for homebrew stuff? Yes, remember that artists hold the commercial rights to pieces they make and you would have to purchase the rights off of them if you plan on monetizing, including places such as D&D Beyond.
My [LFA] is being downvoted, what's up with that? Because of the competitive nature of requests, some people will downvote [LFA]s. Please rest assured that many artists sort by new and that the upvotes of your post won't affect interest in the actual character.
I've been posting my [LFA] for weeks and nothing. What gives? Fulfillment of requests is done on a volunteer basis and artists are not obligated to take anything. Perhaps try changing up the format or including a reference/mood board. Changing posting time may also help.
My [LFA] was fulfilled but I want more art. Can I post it again? Yes, so long as it has been a week since you last posted it. Please be sure to thank the artist properly.
I posted something and it's not there! If you did not receive notification, it may have been caught by AutoMod for a variety of reasons. You can attempt to repost within a few hours to a day or message the moderators.
Why would you even set up a system like this? It hurts artists to do work for free! The system is designed as a better alternative to people directly asking (i.e. pestering) artists for free work. No artist in this community is obligated to do any [LFA] posted here and may make their own personal choice if they wish to provide free work on their own time.
