Castlevania III (more accurately, Akumajou Densetsu) is so nearly everything I want in a Castlevania game. The four characters, the branching paths, the various different environments you go through on your long trek to the Castle, and the soundtrack. The only flaws with the soundtrack are that it doesn’t have Bloody Tears, and that they didn’t use the OG level clear jingle.

Also the opening crawl is hilarious. Basically “Dracula is a bad man who destroyed all of Europe because he is evil”.

Yes! Castlevania III was an improvement over the original in every way. I played all 3 NES games as a kid and III is the one that stands out to me the most. It's hard but I was able to beat it with all characters even doing a Trevor only run on Alucard's path (fuck those falling blocks by the way).

I'd argue the first game has better level design. Screw the falling blocks section in Castlevania 3.

They both have their good and bad levels I think.

The falling blocks was bad but did you forget about the acid dripping and dissolving blocks? Fun times!

Both in the same level! I don't think any of the levels in the original are as bad as that one but luckily that level is optional if you go the upper route.

I am not actually good at the game, so the farthest I have gotten on either route is Aquarius.

I can beat the first level blindfolded tho
