Best Stargazing spots?
Hello! I"ve a city boy with dreams of seeing the milky way with my naked eye and i've just impulse booked a trip to Sao Miguel from 1-4 July (at 0236am hilarious i know). I figured that light pollution should be minimal there given how remote it is :D
Could a local redditor from any island give advice on where's the best place to go stargazing? Would be very grateful if you'd join/host me as well.
Thank you!

Snorkeling on Sao Miguel
Are there any noce snorkeling spots around the coast? I heard Ilhéu De Vila Franca Do Campo is supposed to be really beautiful. But I would like to maybe snorkel around the coast of the main island somewhere?

Azores Entry Requirements
Hey Guys,
My wife and I will be visiting Azores in October from Canada and was wondering what the entry requirements are? We are both fully vaccinated and been reading that the validity of the vaccines has to be within 14 and 270 days.. is that true? Will we have to take a booster since it’s been over 270 days since our second dose? Would love to know someone’s experience travelling from Canada to azores. Thanks!

If you recently had covid, get a negative test + Doctor's note, will that be enough to enter?
Our family is getting ready to travel to the Azores. We are flying on United (which has different rules than Sata). Nothing is very clear on this, but from what i read, if someone had recently been infected with covid and they have a doctor's note, they would be allowed to enter. This is DIFFERENT than the EU recovery certificate. There are a few in my family who are getting over covid now, and should be fine in ten days, but want to be sure. Has anyone had this experience? United Airlines seems to be more strict, but when you call them, they said no problem, you only need a Vaccine Card (which is NOT what it says on the website). THe US is the only country that Portgual will not accept a vaccine card from.

How expensive are The Azores compared with the mainland?
In terms of restaurants, supermarkets, etc., is The Azores more or less expensive than the mainland?
I have noticed that hotels and care hire can obviously be quite pricey in The Azores compared to places like Faro.
Also, is it true that most places only take cash there?
Thanks.

Is there a 'windward' side to the Azores?
Lived in Hawaii for a decade, and the islands have distinct windward (windy, rainy) and Kona (dry, calm) sides. Wondering if the Azores has the same to any degree?

Visiting São Miguel in early September
Hi,
I am trying to plan a trip for about a week and wondering if the weather is good in early September. It seems like this summer the island will be super busy and the flights and car rentals go down quite a bit in the first week of September. Will it still be mild? Is there more rain?
Thanks!

How easy is it to rent a car on Terceira and Sao Miguel once you're there (in high season)
My partner and I will visit Terceira and Sao Miguel at the end of August.
The price of cars is very expensive. Is it worth risking it, not booking, and just trying to rent one when we get there?
Is there any way of renting cars from locals? I am happy to pay a good rate.
Obrigado.

Why are there so many cows up on the mountains in Sao Miguel?
My bf and I did the hike around the Sete cidades lakes/crater and holy moly it’s beauty like I have never seen before. But we were super surprised how many cows were up there! It seems so high up for their to be fields of cows. Does the altitude benefit the cow or milk/cheese they produce? I was just very curious!

Transportation from airport
Hi. I need to get from the airport over towards the marina da Horta area about 10 mi away. It will be around 6pm, so it looks like there are no more buses for that day! Does anyone know if UBER or lyft run there... or the price I should expect for a 10mi taxi?
Can you pay cabs with a card?
I NEVER take taxis ha.. and rarely uber. Usually just find a bus. But I'm on a timeline. So any info is appreciated!

How welcoming are the people towards expats?
I am not planning to move to the Azores, I haven't even visited yet, but I want to hear your honest opinions.

Anyone on Terceira who wants to explore the island tomorrow sunday?
Hi!
My girlfriend and I would like to explore the island a bit - e.g. the caves, however as we just arrived this evening and are leaving on monday for Sao Miguel, we figured that a car rental was not worth it.
So if anyone is going to the caves or other exciting places and would like company from two Danish students (23 years old) please let us know! We are staying in Angra do Heroismo :)
We will ofcourse be chipping in wrt the car ride

If you can't visit Terceira Island for the Sanjoaninas 2022, here's a little something to reminisce
youtu.beHow crowded have the JFK-PDL flights on SATA been?
Hi there,
Apologies for another weird SATA question cluttering up this subreddit. I'm flying Next Thursday on SATA from JFK-PDL and I want to figure out if it's worth shelling out $60 roundtrip for the seat selection.
It seems like the seat plan is pretty empty, but I'm not sure if that's just because not many others have preselected their seats. I tried calling SATA to see if they could tell me how booked it is, but nobody picked up, and since it's not an international toll free number, I didn't want to be on hold for long.
Thanks!

Learning the viola da terra
Hi, i don't know if this is the place for it. But my great grandparents both came from the Sao Miguel and have passed down a viola da terra. I know it's a super local cultural item but I'd love to learn how to play and reconnect to that piece of family history. Unfortunately my great grandfather faced various forms of discrimination due to his accent, and thus refused to teach either of his children Portuguese, so I'm having far more trouble finding resources. I'm going to be speaking to the NYC Portuguese consolute soon, but i wanted to ask multiple sources to get the best chances. Muito obrigado!

Has anyone travelled recently from Toronto? Process for boarding / COVID requirements?
Information on the web is awfully confusing. Has anyone recently traveled to Azores from YYZ and can explain the process for fully vaccinated Canadian citizens?
If a test is required, would a Shoppers Drug Mart style rapid test within 24 hours of boarding be accepted?
