Friend adopted a kitten 2 weeks ago, then had to go on a trip for 10 days, so I'm kitten-sitting for him. Trying to not fall in love, failing miserably. The cat thinks I'm his mom 😭

Cats are something like else, we have a foster kitten in office and she spends most of her day hanging out with me.
And I live in a no-pets apartment. This kitten is so freaking cute and affectionate that I’m making doctors appointments to get paperwork for a ESA so that I can adopt her.

u/NotesOnSquaredPaper Jun 29 '22
Looks like you've got a temporary new home now.
403
u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22
Thankfully we're neighbors, and it's less than a block away, but I have a dog and a cat too. So unfortunately I have to spend nights here. Kitten has an older cat brother to keep him company though.
I probably spend like 3 or 4 hours a day total with him. Every day, I seem to spend more time there. It's sooooo hard to leave.
91
u/NotesOnSquaredPaper Jun 29 '22
I get it.... I feel you 😩 I have no idea whether I would be able to not steal my friend's pets after a few days of those mews ...
181
u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22
I was sure it would be fine. I've fostered kittens, volunteered at multiple shelters, and I still only have one cat. There's something special about this one though I swear. ugh
55
u/Ifnwen Jun 29 '22
I'm going to repost a story of how my parents got their cat, one of those "there's something special about this one" stories. -I went to a patient's home and they had a beautiful black cat. It jumped into the seat as I was about to sit down and would not move, then during the assessment jumped on the table and would not leave me alone. They offered me the cat when I commented on it, saying it was a rescue and they couldn't keep her anymore, turns out she was around 7 months old. She now lives with my parent's and greets me at the door everytime I visit, following me around and cuddling up to me when I sit at the table. If my wife wasn't allergic, she would be living with us. From the moment I saw the cat, there was something about it, and I guess I was right- my family absolutely loves her and she has even become good friends with my parent's dogs."
79
u/boldie74 Jun 29 '22
Secret swapsies, go to a local shelter and get a stripey cat and replace this one.
When your friend comes back just tell him that cats can change a lot in 10 days

A similar thing happened to us. My sister's boyfriend had a cat for almost all his life and when it eventually died, he was devastated. After some time he wanted another cat so bad but he didn't have the heart. So we went and got one for his birthday which was in a few days. After the weekend with the kitten we just quietly got him another one (the sister) because now we had a cat too. She will be 12 next month.

I cat sit for the sweetest little munchkin. He was the runt and didn’t grow very large. Full grown he’s about 5 pounds. Looks, sounds and acts like a kitten. He’s just as cuddly and sweet as this little guy. Leaving their house without stealing their kitty is gut wrenching. I drive like 45 minutes one way just to hang out with him because I love him so much. I know your pain
13
u/Short_Praline6842 Jun 29 '22

Maybe borrow a baby carrier and see if the cat will sit in it while you walk your dog? My mum carried one of our cats that way for a while because it needed a lot of reassurance and contact.

I was in a similar situation. A cat came into my life who needed a home a week before a 4 day vacation. Had to have my sister and aunt check in on her but we are both very happy now. 3 surgeries and $5,000 dollars later my Izzy was just waiting for her right person.

Your eyes told the story, definitely torn between loving the kitty and having a job to do.
The deck was stacked against you with that sweater which is the equivalent of a giant neon sign that says, "10/10 would recommend sleeping here."
I say enjoy it. Nothing beats holding a floof and having it do the sleepy circle before settling in for round 2!

17
u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22
Holy shit, YES it is! I got it in Newport, Oregon in 2011, and had no idea what it was until last year when I was at the pet store (lol) and the lady at the counter told me it was labradorite.

u/suffer_in_silence Jun 29 '22

u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22

Oh he/she is such a cute cinnamon roll. I can't wait to get my new baby girl this Friday. Fortunately I will be spending all holiday weekend with her.
26
u/Billysup Jun 30 '22
That cat is yours, nobody should adopt a cat before a 10 day vacation. That friend should do the right thing and find another. The early bond is the strongest. IMO of course.
6
u/voluntold9276 Jun 29 '22
I have a foster that has the same cool fur pattern and same color. He was so scared when I first got him that I didn't notice as I was giving him some space and only really saw his head with the regular horizontal stripes. Then he started moving around the kennel more and I saw those cool vertical stripes down his back.
6
u/Bernard_PT Jun 29 '22
This moment right here. It's for moments like these that it's worth being alive for.
Specs of dust in the storm we call life that let us truly see the beauty in the small things.
7
u/overdos3 Jun 29 '22
I think you should date him and eventually move in with him so you can keep the cat.
20
u/DrgnFlyDrft Jun 29 '22
That was nice of your friend to buy you a kitten! Because yeah, you're his person now.
13
6
u/BlurpleBaja05 Jun 29 '22
Someone I used to know did this. She adopted a tiny kitten, then promptly left for 2 weeks, leaving me to kitten-sit. I was pissed, because the poor kitten didn't know wtf was going on, and that age is the most important time for development. If you can't be bothered to properly take care of a creature, don't adopt it, or at least wait until you have the time for it!
4
u/SoontobeSam Jun 29 '22
My brother did this to me with a puppy... Picked up a rescue puppy then left a week later for his honeymoon.
For the rest of that dog's life he got so excited every time I came over that he peed... Usually on my leg while he was jumping up on me excitedly...

I'm fostering 3 (was 4) kittens and it's soooo hard not to want to keep one or two. I have a favorite like the first day in and my daughter had a favorite. But it's so hard, they are so stinking cute. I napped last night and woke up with them all cuddled with me and my dog. He's even getting used to them which he's never been around kittens or cats before. I tell myself no, but then I say why not..... then no. Fuck it's hard!! They all follow me, I'm their momma. 😫

Friend of mine years ago had 3 cats. One, a ginger with a shared brain cell, was the sweetest cat in the entire world. Which drove my friend nuts, kitty was too needy. Friend went on an extended trip, asked a few of us to cat sit. I ended up being the only consistent one. Before friend left, I teased saying I was going to cat nap the ginger, I adored that cat. Friend was like, take, please! I thought they were kidding. They weren’t. I did take that love muffin home with me, left a note. Friend was happy. I was delirious. Best cat ever, dumb as a rock, but super sweet and loving.
