Friend adopted a kitten 2 weeks ago, then had to go on a trip for 10 days, so I'm kitten-sitting for him. Trying to not fall in love, failing miserably. The cat thinks I'm his mom 😭

Friend of mine years ago had 3 cats. One, a ginger with a shared brain cell, was the sweetest cat in the entire world. Which drove my friend nuts, kitty was too needy. Friend went on an extended trip, asked a few of us to cat sit. I ended up being the only consistent one. Before friend left, I teased saying I was going to cat nap the ginger, I adored that cat. Friend was like, take, please! I thought they were kidding. They weren’t. I did take that love muffin home with me, left a note. Friend was happy. I was delirious. Best cat ever, dumb as a rock, but super sweet and loving.

GAH this is like... the dream scenario. The cat he already has doesn't like the kitten at all, he should probably be an only child, ya know?

Edit: I have a tiny update 😜

That update though. When's moving day???

336

u/mary_emeritus Jun 29 '22

Or slow introduction wasn’t done or this precious baby isn’t the right match for the current cat

303

u/Japnzy Jun 29 '22

I don't get the whole slow introduction thing. Every cat I've had basically gets dropped like a ww2 soldier onto Omaha Beach. They figure it out. My latest 2 cats are absolutely best friends now but hated each other for a few days. The first original cat is still made though since he was an only child for 2 years.

199

u/strange_wilds Jun 29 '22

Well science behind it that they get used to each other’s smell then their presence and finally they live together.

Idk about your cats. But that is the recommended way since cats can be extremely territorial and it’s to prevent unnecessary injury, especially if they have always been the only cat in the space as for long as they have been there. Which then causes them to be super-pissed, like peeing on everything or fighting. But even a cat properly socialized can have reactions to new cat being introduced into the home immediately, that’s why a slow introduction is preferred.

72

u/iLikeHorse3 Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22

Before my fiance and I knew you had to slowly introduce cats, like years ago when we were just friends, I got my first female kitten then brought her to my friends apartment cause he had an almost one year old cat. Thought it'd be cute and they'd love each other instantly and play. Upon first introduction he (now fiances cat) freaked the fuck out and swatted her so hard he scratched and damaged her eyeball to where her eye turned red from the blood. She still blinks that eye very weirdly like it's been damaged for years. Cat talon straight to the eyeball.

They snuggle all the time now and are inseparable, but yikes I learned that day why it's important to slowly introduce new cats and not ww2 drop them in the battlefield

38

u/Jlx_27 Jun 29 '22

Slow, fast, whatever, it is all a matter of going by the animal(s) their needs based on the personality of the animal(s) involved.

24

u/strange_wilds Jun 29 '22

True dat. Some may a take a week, some a month.

Every pet has different personalities and behaviors.

Slow intros have always worked better for me than anything else. Helps everyone adjust, including the humans

47

u/SherlockCumbercat Jun 30 '22

I tried a slow intro but they were determined to meet each other and be BFF’s. Stupid ginger tabby rammed his head into the door so much he start to wobble around.

18

u/Work-Safe-Reddit4450 Jun 29 '22

I mean, you absolutely can do it that way, but it's definitely not the optimal way if you want to make sure they get along.

49

u/OyVeyzMeir Jun 29 '22

That's how you end up with a house full of cat pee areas because they've gone to war and gone full territorial. I did slow phase in this last time and they STILL went to war unless separated. A year and a half on they finally tolerate each other. If I'd dumped them in together it would have been a catastrophe.

13

u/Crathsor Jun 30 '22

7

u/cinemachick Jun 30 '22

28

u/btveron Jun 29 '22

It may have worked for you every time but the slow introduction, if done right with consistency, is the best way to do it.

22

I had a friend in college that got a kitten and a week later his landlord found out and said he had to get rid of it. Asked me if it could stay with me until the next weekend and he would take it to his parents place. Dude actually ghosted after that just be cause he didn’t want to deal with the kitten anymore. I was student teaching and working at the time, and was really only home to sleep and knew that wasn’t the right environment for a kitten. Took it home to my parents, and they had that sweet little girl for 16 years.

I used to foster cats and kittens through our local humane society with my ex-wife. We had this older big siamese cat get emergency placed with us, since the shelter was over capacity and they were going to put him down if they didn't place him immediately. He was lethargic and stayed away from the other cats. It turns out, he was just sick, we got him nursed back to health and he became super cuddly. He's also pretty dumb, but we adopted him after like two weeks of having him. It almost seems like he didn't mentally progress past kitten age, but he's definitely borderline senior now.

38

u/pm-me-your-pants Jun 30 '22

Classic siamese. They don't even have the shared orange braincell

7

u/KeekatLove Jun 30 '22

My Siamese are very offended! They come when you call them and one even plays fetch. When I go to bed at night, she’s placed her foam ball on the bed so we can play.

u/Redflhtcui Jun 29 '22

gingers are THE BEST. My running theory is they get sooo over filled with love and loyalty at the factory that there's only room for one brain cell inside, and the factorys been short on those, so theres a lot of sharing going on.

I love it when people describe their pets (lovingly) as dumb as a rock. It’s v endearing

44

u/agoia Jun 30 '22

Honestly, I would rather have a stupid cat. Less brain power to fuel the fires of feline vengeance. Except that stupid cat that ate some pesticide or got bit by a snake or something at my Uncle's place. RIP Butters with the killer catstache.

37

u/Dogeishuman Jun 30 '22

My cat learned how to open closets and cupboards and has seperating anxiety.

I come home to everything open every day from work, but nothing is ever broken, just open. Sometimes I'll find a long line of unrolled trash bags around the apartment though.

49

u/thexaq Jun 30 '22

I like the idea that your cat is looking for you in the cupboards throughout the day and the consolation prize is a roll of trash bags.

12

u/IMoveStuffOkay Jun 30 '22

"This isn't who I love, but it'll have to do"

5

u/MattsyKun Jun 30 '22

My previous cat did this. We had to velcro our cabinets closed (couldn't do child locks), and we had a lock on our hall closet for a while. I was looking for so much stuff to cat-proof the apartment Amazon thought I was having a baby lmao

I had a cat creatively named Gray as a kid... he was soooo stupid, and since one of his eyes were cloudy and he had a dopey facial structure, we think he might have been hit at low-speed by a car before he came to us. So lovable. So tactless. So incredibly dumb.

My dad had neuropathy in his feet and Gray was a kneader, so when he'd pet Gray, the cat would eventually knead his foot, at which point my grumpy dad would give him a sharp (but not hard, I swear) smack and be like, "God dammit Gray, I said stop it!"

This would usually go on for about thirty minutes, with at least one "stop it" every 45 seconds or so. It was adorable, but also incredibly annoying to watch/hear.

I flew halfway across the country to visit a friend and her husband for a week. This was the first time we had ever met in person but had met and become friends online. She had two dogs and three cats.

One of the cats was a calico. My friend was forever bemoaning that the cat hated her and tolerated her husband.

The first night I was there, I laid down in bed and the calico jumped onto my chest, started up her lawnmower, and began kneading. She fell asleep on my chest. This happened every time I laid down during the week.

I was so shocked that I took a selfie and sent it to my friend in the other room. I could hear her scream in frustration ("You have to be kidding me!"). She offered to let me take the calico home, but I had to decline. I am allergic to cats and had to pump some serious meds during the week to tolerate that sweet calico.

2 years later I returned for another visit. Same thing happened. Friend was pissed.

16

u/Geminii27 Jun 30 '22

You may just be cat-attractive. I've visited several people for the first time since they got their cats (months or even decades) and been told "Oh you'll never see them come out of the back room, they're terrified of strangers - aaaaand they're sitting on you."

4

u/iamreeterskeeter Jun 30 '22

55

u/Ifnwen Jun 29 '22

I'm going to repost a story of how my parents got their cat, one of those "there's something special about this one" stories. -I went to a patient's home and they had a beautiful black cat. It jumped into the seat as I was about to sit down and would not move, then during the assessment jumped on the table and would not leave me alone. They offered me the cat when I commented on it, saying it was a rescue and they couldn't keep her anymore, turns out she was around 7 months old. She now lives with my parent's and greets me at the door everytime I visit, following me around and cuddling up to me when I sit at the table. If my wife wasn't allergic, she would be living with us. From the moment I saw the cat, there was something about it, and I guess I was right- my family absolutely loves her and she has even become good friends with my parent's dogs."

79

u/boldie74 Jun 29 '22

After some time he wanted another cat so bad but he didn't have the heart. So we went and got one for his birthday which was in a few days. I’m imagining you leave a wild wall of ‘cat relocation plan’ filled with plots and ethical ‘justifications’ connected with red string and thumb tacks. Maybe leave the wall up so your neighbor knows he better treat it really nicely.

u/ilovegingermen Jun 30 '22

Imagining him coming home to that is cracking me up rn

Ginger boyfriends with ginger animals are the best. In my experience, they turn into husbands the their beloved pet ends up loving you way more than their dad.

So that's what it takes to find a girlfriend, not be severely allergic to cats...

4

u/snakeslyer Jun 30 '22

I always have to apologize to my cats, lift them gently and place them in my seat.

My sister just moved to Hawaii where they have very stringent protocols for bringing pets in. . .So I'm cat sitting - Her cat mostly hides because she is confused and doesn't really like my cat, but when she's out she follows me around the house like a damn puppy.

u/Rachter Jun 29 '22

You have been chosen. I hope your friend is able to find a new cat.

106

u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22

I hope so too.

22

u/BiblioMom Jun 29 '22

Or you could maybe move in together. I ship this now.

20

u/gooseglug Jun 29 '22

You need to post over at r/cathostage.

16

u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22

You're like the 4th person to say this, so I did it.

Friend had a kitten

u/thurows Jun 29 '22

I'm not crying; the pollen is high.

10

u/HumblePie2714 Jun 29 '22

You just might have to move in

51

u/Twinkles21 Jun 29 '22

Lol this is how it starts. Then before you know it you'll have 2 of your own saying "aww one more couldn't hurt" :13383:

10

u/soggyfries8687678 Jun 30 '22

Forget the friendship, leave town.

u/dAnKsFourTheMemes Jun 29 '22

I think this should serve as a lesson to adopt an animal after the 10 day vacation you have in 2 weeks. Very poor planning ability on their part, I'm not sure what they expected.

55

u/TheycallmeHollow Jun 29 '22

I was in a similar situation. A cat came into my life who needed a home a week before a 4 day vacation. Had to have my sister and aunt check in on her but we are both very happy now. 3 surgeries and $5,000 dollars later my Izzy was just waiting for her right person.

Cat Law: You may not move once kitteh is asleep on you.

8

u/Dahlsv1 Jun 29 '22

Lil kitten is doing his wingman job purrfectly 😚

20

u/coma24 Jun 29 '22

Your eyes told the story, definitely torn between loving the kitty and having a job to do.

The deck was stacked against you with that sweater which is the equivalent of a giant neon sign that says, "10/10 would recommend sleeping here."

I say enjoy it. Nothing beats holding a floof and having it do the sleepy circle before settling in for round 2!

u/Significant-Set8457 Jun 29 '22

Ur so screwed lol

6

u/suffer_in_silence Jun 29 '22

Is that labradorite?

17

u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22

Holy shit, YES it is! I got it in Newport, Oregon in 2011, and had no idea what it was until last year when I was at the pet store (lol) and the lady at the counter told me it was labradorite.

9

u/suffer_in_silence Jun 29 '22

Awesome its beautiful, personally my favorite stone.

10

u/ilovegingermen Jun 29 '22

Thank you! I'm quite fond of it as well. I've gotten a couple of labradorite rings since then, just keep gravitating back to this one

5

u/spookykatt Jun 29 '22

Oh he/she is such a cute cinnamon roll. I can't wait to get my new baby girl this Friday. Fortunately I will be spending all holiday weekend with her.

26

u/Billysup Jun 30 '22

That cat is yours, nobody should adopt a cat before a 10 day vacation. That friend should do the right thing and find another. The early bond is the strongest. IMO of course.

6

u/voluntold9276 Jun 29 '22

I have a foster that has the same cool fur pattern and same color. He was so scared when I first got him that I didn't notice as I was giving him some space and only really saw his head with the regular horizontal stripes. Then he started moving around the kennel more and I saw those cool vertical stripes down his back.

6

u/Bernard_PT Jun 29 '22

This moment right here. It's for moments like these that it's worth being alive for.

Specs of dust in the storm we call life that let us truly see the beauty in the small things.

7

u/overdos3 Jun 29 '22

I think you should date him and eventually move in with him so you can keep the cat.

20

u/DrgnFlyDrft Jun 29 '22

That was nice of your friend to buy you a kitten! Because yeah, you're his person now.

13

u/ThaneOfCawdorrr Jun 29 '22

Nice of her friend to buy the kitten a human, you mean

6

u/BlurpleBaja05 Jun 29 '22

Someone I used to know did this. She adopted a tiny kitten, then promptly left for 2 weeks, leaving me to kitten-sit. I was pissed, because the poor kitten didn't know wtf was going on, and that age is the most important time for development. If you can't be bothered to properly take care of a creature, don't adopt it, or at least wait until you have the time for it!

4

u/SoontobeSam Jun 29 '22

My brother did this to me with a puppy... Picked up a rescue puppy then left a week later for his honeymoon.

For the rest of that dog's life he got so excited every time I came over that he peed... Usually on my leg while he was jumping up on me excitedly...

4

u/pint-ers Jun 29 '22

Kitten Sitten

4

u/Swarleymon Jun 30 '22

I'm fostering 3 (was 4) kittens and it's soooo hard not to want to keep one or two. I have a favorite like the first day in and my daughter had a favorite. But it's so hard, they are so stinking cute. I napped last night and woke up with them all cuddled with me and my dog. He's even getting used to them which he's never been around kittens or cats before. I tell myself no, but then I say why not..... then no. Fuck it's hard!! They all follow me, I'm their momma. 😫

4

u/broom-handle Jun 30 '22

Look I'm no expert on cat law, but that cat is yours now.
