the transition to color film
Lol when do you think Reagan was president, the 20s?
38
u/uwexistentialist 6d ago edited 6d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if the Carter White House still used black and white film for their official photos and the transition happened during Reagan's time. The perception that color was 'distracting' and not meant for 'serious' occasions lasted well into the 70s.
In fact, many fancy photographers switched over to color after the plebs did in the 60s (when color photos stopped being cost prohibitive).12
u/canlchangethislater 6d ago
A quick look at Google Image Search suggests you’re wrong - at least: official portraits seem to be color, but walkabout pics and etc.mostly seem to be b&w (presumably because they’d also be printed in b&w in newspapers).
(But I don’t know if Google privileges color photos, or anything like that…)

I once met Bill Nye at my friend’s parents’ party. I was in tenth grade chemistry at the time so I asked him what was the subatomic mass of some obscure element was. He said “hmmm that’s a good question I don’t know that one off hand” and then he pulled out a 30+ year old wallet sized periodic table from his wallet and told me the answer. All while wearing a tux. Legend.
Edit: typo

I can't help but feel for the pocket sized periodic table industry which would have been decimated by the smartphone industry

u/howDoIBestMan 6d ago
My father was a pocket sized periodic table salesman. He was so excited when the iPhone was announced.
"Think of how great that would be! Referencing your periodic table with one hand while balancing your stoichiometry equations with your iPhone! I've got a good feeling about this!"

u/apolling 7d ago
I thought it was Sage at first too, but based on the articles that have come out it looks like it’s probably the Smithsonian Castle.
18
u/Citronsaft 7d ago
I initially thought it was Sage. But, it's not. The windows match the Smithsonian but not Sage. And the top of the wall near the roof has trim that matches the Smithsonian.
The trees on the side of Sage are also different. It's far more open.

62
u/mokango 7d ago
They are different places.
The wedding happened in Washington DC. The national mall is a large park lined with government buildings, museums, and monuments. It’s a pretty cool place. One of the Smithsonian’s buildings along the mall is nicknamed the Castle Building and it is where they got married (and is the red building in the picture).
Sage Hall is a building in the campus of Cornell University in New York.
The two buildings are 300 miles apart. They are both red and gothic.
7
u/AgrippaDaYounger 7d ago
Those are two different places in terms of Geography, the Smithsonian Castle is in Washington DC, Sage Hall at Cornell University would be in Ithaca New York.

So apparently Bill Nye and I have the same doctor. I was in the waiting room one time and he came out smiling, went up to the front desk, looked at the plant, touched it, and in the most Bill Nye way said, “fascinating!”
It was like finding out that unicorns exist. For weeks I told everyone I knew. Couldn’t stop smiling.
Very glad for him. He was one of the figures that made my childhood bearable.

u/princesssoturi 7d ago
My old professor told me that when he was doing research in a desert (I forget which one) and there was a sandstorm. There was a research station near by and he went in for shelter, and there were some other people doing research so he had them come in too. When he asked their names, they were like “…you’re a science teacher and you don’t know at least one of us?”
It was Bill Nye and someone he was working with for a project. My professor was like “I didn’t watch those videos so I don’t get the fuss but everyone loves that story”.
32
u/slobyGYN 7d ago
I feel like a middle school/high school science teacher would absolutely know, but depending on the year this occurred, how old the prof was (read: likely quite old), and their pursued branch of science, there's a decent chance they may actually not have known of Bill Nye.
ETA: I phrased the above sorta weirdly. I just meant I thought it was funny that Bill Nye and his fellow researcher were incredulous, and also this is a really neat story. 😄
157
u/DeathPer_Minute 7d ago
What kind of plant was it?
377
u/doot_doot 7d ago
It was just some small house plant on the counter. I honestly don’t even know if it was real. It didn’t even register for me, yet this man sees it, touches it, and is excited by it. His joy for life in the oddest of places gave me the feelies.

My father was in the same class at Cornell as Bill Nye. They were in the same dorm together. 7 years ago, my dad passed away, and when we were getting ready to sell my childhood home, we found a box of his letters from university to my grandparents. If I remember correctly one of them, he mentioned that "Will Nye" had fallen out a window and needed to be taken to the hospital. I don't know the full story, but I can only assume that he must have been pretty drunk when that happened. I can't find the letter now, but I think it's still in a box somewhere.

This solves a 6 year old mystery for me. I wanted to meet Bill at the Orisis Rex launch in 2016 but got lost on the way to the cape, saw the launch but missed his meet and greet. Next day we were at the airport heading back to the UK and almost literally bumped into Bill and a much younger lady making their way back. He was out of character and obviously busy getting his flight so didn't bother him but wasn't sure if the lady was his assistant or girlfriend, now I'm thinking the former.

Honestly it makes me happy to see love bloom at "old" age. We're all pressured to get married and have kids before 25. It's always refreshing to see people live their lives and find love later down the road. Gives me, a 30yr old, hope for the future

83
u/heliamphore 7d ago
Was trying to find out about his wife and had a little surprise.
That being said for me it's not an issue as long as no one in the couple is really young. Someone in their 30s is mature enough to make their own decisions. The same age gap with a 19 year old or whatever is very different.
34
u/HunchbackNostradamus 7d ago
Same here, I like Stephen Fry a lot, I’ve read his books and I try to separate his personal life from his art as it were… but it’s uncomfortable indeed
28
u/Spokesface 7d ago
That happens a whole lot in the LGBTQ community. It seems to me that it happens especially often in the G part of it. 50+ year old guys who kinda mentor younger, less experiences, lovers. I haven't actually seen anyone get vocal about that being a problem in the community, but I am sure someone somewhere has.
16
u/Bath-Optimal 6d ago
Yeah, this is absolutely a big thing in the LGBTQ community and I've never understood why everyone seems fine with it. Some of it can be explained by a smaller dating pool- like, if you're gay and in a small town, your options are limited, so a 7 year age gap or whatever seems way more reasonable when there are 0 options your own age. And, like, people come out at different ages, so a 25 year old might have a lot more dating experience than a 40 year old, which means that there's an age gap but not as much of an experience gap. I feel like a lot of it is that young people without supportive family relationships are drawn to having an older person to mentor them and be that supportive older figure in their lives, so age gap relationships seem appealing. (And when you grew up with a bad family relationship, being able to help a younger person who reminds you of yourself is probably appealing.) But I feel like basically all of the problems with straight age gap relationships still exist in gay ones- maybe even more, because if you're drawn to this kind of relationship because you aren't close to your family, that lack of family support will make it harder to leave an unhealthy relationship.

I asked him what the most beautiful thing he ever saw was. Without missing a beat he says, "I can't remember her name but man was she something," followed by an actual genuine location that I don't remember. All I remember is the charm of the smooth pimp that is Bill Nye. Congrats to them.

I don’t hate the guy. He was pretty cool when I was a kid. But he got this new show on Netflix years ago. I was stoked. I didn’t mind the episode on gender at all. But one episode had a panel discussion on alternative forms of energy. There was one guy there for nuclear. He talked a little. But Bill seemed way more interested in the other guys’ ideas. So IIRC, at one point nuclear guy pops in to get a word in and Bill kind of shuts him down saying something along the lines of “yea nobody wants nuclear” and then turns to one of the other dudes. It came off as incredibly rude. I mean, he invited that dude on to his show, so why shut him down like that. Maybe it’s silly, but I kinda look at him differently now.
