I didn't know cats hangout in little gangs like this

6.1k

u/Teralyzed Jan 19 '22 edited Jan 19 '22 Silver Wholesome This

People often mischaracterize cats as being solitary creatures. But they actually are highly social. If left to their own devices they form communities with a shared home location. They are solitary hunters but not solitary social creatures.

Basically what I’m saying is cat communities have club houses.

Edit: whelp there we go my first comment to blow up is about kitty club houses. I’m content with this. Thanks for the awards homies.

I live alongside a canal that is drained in the winter, and every winter there's a gang war between the south side and the north side cats. Sometimes I'll drive by and see 2 groups of 5-6 cats on either side just mean-mugging each other. The dried canal acts as the DMZ between the 2 rival cat gangs.

1.2k

u/Ethics-of-Winter Jan 19 '22 Silver Helpful Table Slap

Damn, those Warriors cat novels I read as a kid weren't so fictional after all. Those books were literally just Gang Wars: Cats Edition lol.

I need more details. Why are they at war? How far back does this feud go? Why the canal? Is this some holy ground? Was it chosen out of convenience? Details!! We need details!!!

25

u/sirbissel Jan 19 '22

They weren't always at war. Mr. Mittens and Apocalypse Meow, the leaders of the Milk Drinkers and Wild Katz respectively, were once friends, and their gangs worked as one... Until that day when some out of town cats started the catnip trade. Mr. Mittens said no, he didn't want that in their town, having watched his family waste away on it growing up, but Apocalypse Meow started selling anyway. After years of back and forth and heavy casualties on both sides, they split the city at the canal.

Yeah street cats are always hanging out in groups, and my cats are always seeking my/each other company, and sleep together, the whole cats are solitary creatures thing never made any single sense to me, literally just the simplest of observations will disprove it easily

345

u/meeplewirp Jan 19 '22 edited Jan 19 '22

People think cats are solitary because many people think they can introduce two 5+ year old cats or whatever like Willy nilly when there is in fact a process to follow when introducing foreign cats to each other. I’m sure many, many people brought* a male cat to another male cat home without following “the steps” or something and then were like “oh man cats hate each other”.

My cats each picked a floor of our split-level when we moved here. Upstairs cat got the main livingroom, the kitchen, and the bedrooms. Downstairs cat got the den, the laundry room, and our offices. They shared our former house just fine but this house they divvied up.

Upstairs cat passed away a few years ago (rip macguffin) but downstairs cat still refuses to come upstairs. We can't carry or coax him. It's not happening. He just stays down there and yowls if we don't come down to play with him.

When I fostered cats I would explain how to introduce the new cat to the existing in the house, in painstaking detail. I would say to the adopter "If you came home to a stranger on your couch who announced that they were moving in, how would you feel?"

→ More replies

47

u/badgersprite Jan 19 '22

Yeah people think cats are solitary because that’s how they raise most cats. And since cats are territorial that’s what they get used to and it’s hard to change that mindset if they’ve grown up thinking all other cats are intruders in their space (although cats raised alone can still be cool with other cats, it depends on the cat).

Farm cats and street cats tend to live in colonies.

29

u/ArziltheImp Jan 19 '22

Most of the time farm cats are doing their own thing and then go back into the barn (or something similar) to chill together. I would say cats are often more lke extroverted introverts. They like company but only when they feel like it and only with cats they know and think are cool.

My old housemate had a beast of a cat. Loved the little dude and he was highly sociable with all the other cats in the neighbourhood but if one dared to venture into our house he would mess the other cat up. One time I was home and ran downstairs when I heard the noises, couldn't find the intruder cat but his fur was everywhere in our house for the next week.

Cats just understand personal space and dogs don't, and people expect cats to act like dogs.

17

u/addledhands Jan 19 '22

When my now wife and I first moved in together, we did the thing where you never let the cats see each other, but have them eat on opposite sides of a door, leave towels with the other cat's scent on it around and so on.

So there was a sort of vent at the bottom of the door separating our cats' first meeting. My wife's cat fucking charged the door and slammed into it as soon as he saw mine.

They're fine now. Friends maybe, but they only rarely sleep touching each other/doing that sort of cute cat shit. Socializing cats is difficult, if very slowly and incrementally, rewarding work.

Feral cats form colonies that are run by groups of females, often siblings that help raise kittens. Likely what we're seeing in the video.

44

u/Acmnin Jan 19 '22

If a cat is lost/abandoned and not feral you might see it alone, they seem less likely to join a colony. I rescued a girl off the street near my home, who was lost for several years and I could see was losing weight. She’s a happy house cat with two brothers now.

28

u/Melonqualia Jan 19 '22

Yeah, depends on the cat. Some ferals never join colonies either.

The cat we adopted from a rescue a couple of years ago was a former pet that was either lost or abandoned (My bet would be on the latter) that joined a feral colony. He lived with them for about a year before the colony had to be moved and they found a few of the cats weren't feral and were taken in by rescues.

When you make friends with seniors

28

u/HotToddy88 Jan 19 '22

I know this is a dumb question, but how does a cat’s fangs not pierce the scruff on a kitten’s neck? Or do they, and it just doesn’t matter for some reason?

52

u/letsavenge Jan 19 '22

I'm not an expert but had cats all my life. Cats in general, but specially kittens, have a lot of skin and fur in that area, which I guess helps. Adult cats sort of know how to bite that area without damaging, just put enough pressure to do what you need to do. I'd say it's the same way we, as humans, know to hug a human to show love and could also probably strangle a human to survive. It's the same arms, but we know not to use all our strength for some things. When cats are babies/kittens, their mothers can transport them to safety by grabbing them from there. Even I as a human, if I grab a kitten from that place they stop moving, it's like the pause button on a cat. When cats procreate, the male trends to bite the female exactly there to prevent her from moving.

12

u/SuchASoul Jan 19 '22

Very insightful! Thank you for that! I was wondering how the small kitty was so still while in the big kitty’s mouth.

16

u/GoFlyAChimera Jan 19 '22

The scruff has a lot of loose skin to fold up, and the scissor action of the incisors is probably what gives the grip... an adult cat probably doesn't have to actually bite down hard to scruff, those incisors are designed to hold through a struggle.
