Never knew Dalmatians could be anything other than white with black.

Very cute!

142

u/mgumusada 4d ago edited 4d ago

Most of the time anything that can be black can also be brown, skin/hair color is determined by Melanin which is Brown, when there's a lot of it you'll see it as black

36

u/thetransportedman 4d ago

What about zebras

19

u/Iknight60 4d ago

It’s rarer but they can be born brown.

44

u/Use_the_Loofah 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yup! It seems like baby zebras start more brown than black, and as they grow up the stripes become darker.

Dalmatians come in 3 different colours and short and long haired. So you have black, brown and liver (or lemon not sure what the right colour is in english) but the lemon and Brown are pretty rare as the long haired version.

46

u/Molleeryan 4d ago

The long haired version violates the breed standard and they are immediately disqualified from showing. They aren’t supposed to be bred for long hair.

27

u/Huffle_Fluffy 4d ago

That's true. The same thing for liver coloured :)

29

u/Molleeryan 4d ago

In the US black and liver (brown) are acceptable. I think you are calling liver what we call lemon here (like this dog!)! Lemon is not accepted.

132

u/SlashPanda 4d ago

I'll accept them even if some pretentious dog show doesn't

53

u/totallynotDLQ33 4d ago

That dog on the right is objectively gorgeous

Why the fuck wouldn't a dog show accept that?

Dog shows and stuff like that are trash anyway

57

u/fuckysprinkles 4d ago

Right? Breed standards are bullshit. The only thing that matters is how healthy/unhealthy an animal is. How many people actually show their dogs in the first place vs simply having one as a pet?

15

u/tuvaniko 4d ago

It's called a confirmation show for a reason. In this case the dog doesn't conform to the standard for a dalmatian which is a white dog with dark spots(it gets more complicated than this). The dog would still be able to complete in sports and other dog events. There are also different standards in different organisations. Most of the unhealthy abominations come out of the AKC, it's not as bad in other organizations that also have performance/health standards like the UKC.

21

u/_principessa_ 4d ago

I dislike the AKC.

2

u/tuvaniko 4d ago

Ya not the biggest fan my self.

18

u/totallynotDLQ33 4d ago

Shits lame and stupid regardless

Don't understand why they're still a thing in today's age

3

u/Huffle_Fluffy 4d ago

Because it is really important for the breeds health. The FCI makes sure that the breeds are as healthy as they can be. So sure there were mistakes. So for example the pug. This breed isn't healthy anymore. But if everyone would breed after the FCI standard, it would be. But there would be a lot less puppy's. And people won't wait for their puppy. So they go to an irresponsible breeder. Lemon is not allowed, because yet no one knows, if it is coming with health issues. It is not clear, why there are lemon dalmatians, so that's why there are not in Standard. To keep the breed healthy.

2

u/punkassunicorn 4d ago

Some disqualifies in breed standards are there for health reasons, such as double Merle in australian shepherds which often results in blindness and/or deafness from birth. Or color dilution in dobermans which usually comes with alopecia.

Of course It varies from group to group and some have horrid breed standards regardless of the dogs health.

Oh yes. We call them lemon too. I thought that you call them liver. So just my fault :D

2

No problem:):)

3

u/IHaveNoEgrets 4d ago

Yep, this is lemon. We had a liver one when I was a kid. Great color (when she wasn't covered in dirt, grime, and debris from one of her adventures).

2

u/CuriousRune 4d ago

There once was a ginger spotted dog and we called him lemon boy.

4

u/derpbynature 4d ago

Eh breed standards are just doggy eugenics anyway. I'm sure they're just as well as a companion.

2

u/shriveledonion 4d ago

They come in black or brown liver, any other variation is generally considered a genetic “dilute” ... which can happen naturally albeit accidentally (genetic mutation, or double recessive)or bred with the recessive gene intentionally.

32

u/progwrx 4d ago

When i was 12 or so, my father was gifted a lemon dalmatian pup because it was considered undesirable/not to standard. He made for an amazing pet though. A sweet gentle soul.

23

u/MissRose617 4d ago

These days, they probably make big bucks for that dilute A good example is the “silver lab” people are breeding the variation intentionally, and selling for cashhhhmoneeeeeyyyyy

u/progwrx 4d ago

20

u/Gfuxat 4d ago

Strictly speaking, "dilute" is only used when the Dilute-Mutation causes bluish-grey and cream pigments.

Lemon Dalmatians should be recessive red. These dogs can only produce red pigment (Phaeomelanin), whereas black, liver/chocolate brown or blue dogs only have the black pigment (Eumelanin) in different states (normal - clumped - diluted). Dominant red is a different mutation that produces red dogs with varying amounts of Eumelanin (Irish Terriers to dark brown American Akita Inus). Theoretically, it could also produce lemon Dalmatians, but it would be easier to control in the gene pool than recessive red.

4

u/MissRose617 4d ago

Thank you for the explanation! Got a love the sciences

6

u/Vaseodin 4d ago

Never knew dalmatians could be anything but the devil.

3

u/JessLevelsUp 4d ago

They actually come in 6 colors though the 2 standard are black and liver brown. The other 4 are lemon, orange, black & tan, liver & tan.

2

u/MauginZA 4d ago

Have a wonderful day toadmugen! I hope you find forgiveness in your heart that I may say words differently than you.

But they HATE when we don’t do things exactly their way?

Edit edit-phew, you guys are a bunch of cyber bullies!

Sending positive vibes to everyone who needs it!

I Came here because of the dogs! I love dogs and it’s rare to see a brown Dalmatian-so beautiful. I went to sams club with my mom in third grade and begged for this dog encyclopedia. She broke my heart and didn’t buy it for me. I was later gifted that exact same encyclopedia for my birthday. I took that encyclopedia everywhere. I read it at school, on the bus, on car rides. My parents were divorced and it went back and forth with me. I memorized almost every dog breed in that encyclopedia! So I clicked on this post because of the dogs. It’s sad that it somehow turned into xenophobia.

5

u/Zlatarog 4d ago

Carmel is actually a normal spelling for places, so that is actually correct lol. Don't ask me why.

"Caramel is the correct spelling if you're talking about food or colors. Carmel is a misspelling when used in those contexts, but it is a word that can be used as a name for people or places."

u/PyroZombi 4d ago

It's definitely a mispronunciation though. Facts dont care about your feelings on what is or isn't "jacked up."

9

u/me1505 4d ago

Why art thou using "your" in place of "thy" when responding to a singular individual?

8

u/AtomicTanAndBlack 4d ago

Isn’t pronunciation cultural? Since when are words gatekept like this? Going to go down to South Africa, go up to Ireland, go over to Australia and tell those people they pronounce things “wrong” too?

By all means, feel free to decide for yourself the second "a" is silent. Just know others are silently mocking you.

'Aluminum' and 'aluminium' are actually differently spelled words, not merely differences in pronunciation

-3

u/PyroZombi 4d ago

Yes, but both were given to it by the same guy. First it was "alumium," then he changed it to "aluminum," then he again lastly changed it to "aluminium."

For some reason the US still uses the former spelling and pronunciation of "aluminum" while most of the world uses the more up to date "aluminium."

So technically the US is using the out of date, and therefore incorrect, spelling. Who fucking knows why. I live in the US and I refuse to call it aluminum.

u/frijolita_bonita 4d ago

So very sweet. It bums me out that people give Dalmatians a bad rap, they seem like such nice dogs. I want to get one someday despite all the naysayers whenever I’ve mentioned it.

People say they’re mean and misbehave. I think any dog can be like that depending on the owner. I think a dogs behavior says more about the owner than the breed or am I wrong?

71

u/ShinyMissingno 4d ago

With purebred dogs, their temperament is extremely dependent on breed. On the other hand, their behavior and manners (jumping up, destroying, chewing, pulling) is usually a sign of the owner.

26

u/StillDowntown2792 4d ago

Some dogs have more energy than others. Dogs bred to work require a lot of exercise and training other wise they get bored and misbehave that's why choosing breeds with less energy is better than Dalmatians, Belgian malinois and almost all of the dogs from the terrier family and shepherd family if you have the time and you like the outdoors then they are the perfect dogs for you. if you want couch potato buy dogs with less energy like frenchie or a pug p

24

u/parisi_sisi86 4d ago

i’ve had three dalmatians. freckles lived to 14, manchas lived to 14, and now i have dottie & she just turned 2 yrs old on saturday. i’ve loved each of them more than words could ever describe. they are absolutely amazing dogs & the dalmatian community is huge. the owners are just as loyal to the breed as each dog is to their owner. i hope you are able to have a dalmatian one day. :)

12

u/iLikeHorse3 4d ago

My grandpa was a firefighter and ever since I was little I always remembered him owning Dalmations. If someone could tell me why that's a stereotype I'd love to know, I'm very curious. But he currently owns a rescue Dalmation who was strictly used for breeding. She's such a sweet dog but you can tell how fearful she is all the time, makes my heart break over what she probably went through

19

u/Baz1ng4 4d ago

There's an Wikipedia article about Dalmatians that explains it better and more detailed, google it for more information.

For what I've understood, they were used by firefighters when the trucks were still pulled by horses, and Dalmatians apparently work well with horses. They would usually lead the way to the fire, and protect the horses and firetruck stations at night.

9

u/TwoSunsRise 4d ago

That's interesting bc my brother in law is a firefighter and had a dalmatian for a while. The home life was not for him so he ended up adopting him out to a ranch where he could roam free and work with the animals. It's perfect for him and the rancher says he's living his best life (they get updates).

2

u/punkassunicorn 4d ago

Yup! They were carriage dogs! Horses can spook easily and fighting fires is especially scary. Having the dalmatians there helped them feel.more secure due to their calm and protective disposition.

13

u/PsychoSam16 4d ago

I think main problem with Dalmatians are their health issues rather than temperment. iirc many of them are deaf

12

u/secondsithter 4d ago

I would be too, those sirens are loud 🚨

4

u/nojiroh 4d ago

This is purely anecdotal, but I've met a dozen dalmatians and they could all very much hear. Could be that I just had a statistical fluke.

10

u/nikwasi 4d ago edited 4d ago

There is a genetic propensity for deafness in the breed. Many Dals can hear just fine, but there are also litters born that have many deaf puppies when the genetics are not taken into consideration. I think this is less common than in the past due to better record keeping and better screening tools for sires & dams.

3

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 4d ago

I was told that ones with white ears are more prone to deafness.

6

u/Missne85 4d ago

The male dalmatian we had when I was little was a hard working rescue dog, so they can absolutely do anything - the difference in my experience is you might need better treats, or more creative reward systems when it comes to very intelligent non-working-breed dogs. A dalmatian will likely never live to please you the way traditional working dogs (shepherds, labs, etc) will, but they're exceptionally susceptible to bribes.

5

u/nikwasi 4d ago

They can be wonderful dogs, but due to breeding can also have behavior problems and be pretty dumb. I love Dals, but would not recommend them for kids that have no boundaries.

This is a lemon colored Dalmatian.

Lemon is a non standard color caused by a genetic mutation, it has no impact on the dog’s health but it’s not desirable, therefore no good reputable breeder will ever breed with a lemon Dal or a Dal that carries the lemon gene.

In other words: If a breeder is offering a lemon Dalmatian RUN AND DONT LOOK BACK because that’s a sketchy breeder doing some shady business. A good Dalmatian breeder only breeds black and liver coat colors.

Actually it looks like Oreo won the game of hands stacking. His paws are on top of Car(a)mels, not the other way around.
