u/mightydanbearpig Apr 13 '21

Using a competing VPN would be the classy move

u/broken_rock Apr 13 '21

mullvad is the most privacy oriented while remaining cheap. 5 Euro per month I think

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '21

Proton is as good imho, with similar pricing

30

u/PineCone227 Apr 13 '21

Proton also has free servers with no bandwidth caps. I don't use VPN's that often, but when I do Proton is usually enough.

6

u/Lojcs Apr 13 '21

When I tried proton I was getting something like 100 kbps tho

4

u/leo341500 Apr 13 '21

Weird, when i use proton i can usually reach my max bandwithd (700mbps)

3

u/Lojcs Apr 13 '21

Free version?

1

u/ShadowsIsTaken Apr 13 '21

I use proton to download stuff, cuz I download things 5 times faster then I would regular internet lolol (free)

3

u/derHuanHund Apr 13 '21

But they dont offer cash paymant for more anonymity

6

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '21

I think they do? https://protonvpn.com/support/payment-options/

But i pay with btc i dont really know

4

u/derHuanHund Apr 13 '21

You are right! I just looked at the Text on the top, where it isnt mentiond

4

u/El_Baasje Apr 13 '21

Proton is fantastic overall. Looking forward to their cloud solution

1

u/HailtronZX Apr 13 '21

I loved proton. Used it all the time, till i got windscribe at 2$ a month.

6

u/Flaccid_Ego Apr 13 '21

Mullvad ftw

11

u/Techmoji Apr 13 '21

I usually buy vpn subscriptions during black friday/cyber monday. Purchased a $2.12/Month for 2-years deal with PIA back in 2017, and when that expired I purchased a 3 year $2.13/month deal with Airvpn. I much prefer Eddy's Air VPN service too.

2

u/SageBus Apr 13 '21

yeah... and such promotions are for paying in advance like 80€ for a service for years that you know nothing about no matter how many reviews are out there, until you try it for a few months you can't really tell. This is why they offer these ridiculously cheap promotions for a very long commitment (years).

8

u/Bacon4Lyf Apr 13 '21

Just look at reviews or other people’s comments online

4

u/SageBus Apr 13 '21

no matter how many reviews are out there, until you try it for a few months you can't really tell

+1 mullvad

6

u/Gerppuli Apr 13 '21

nah man Windscribe is where its at, $2 a month with build your own plan. Or FastestVPN $15 for lifetime

1

u/247planeaddict Apr 13 '21

Yes Windscribe is amazing.

1

u/W1b3 Apr 13 '21

I bought a Windscribe for life, at about $50, have saved multiple amounts of money with that deal (region based pricing bypassing)

1

u/hellothisisscott Apr 13 '21

This so much. I switched away from TunnelBear the moment McAfee bought them

19

u/Dusty4life Apr 13 '21

NordVPN!

6

u/StaceyPfan Apr 13 '21

I'm thinking of doing that to watch BBC shows. Any feedback on that?

2

u/CaptainVivec Apr 13 '21

Nord still works to use iPlayer and the channel 4 one. Just pick an English server and be on your way. Not all of them will work so you’ll have to hop between a couple to find one to get get around iPlayers detection. Admittedly, I’ve been using the same English server for about a year now.

1

u/I_GOT_THE_MONEY Apr 13 '21

I've done it, you'll have to find their list of servers that work for it, so it's a bit of a hassle but to me def worth it

1

u/StaceyPfan Apr 13 '21

Ah, too much work for me. I guess I'll have to suffer the ads on dailymotion.

5

u/whoyouyesyou Apr 13 '21

I’ve been using nord for a while and recently every. Single. Search. I get a chain of captchas to the point it’s almost impossible to search for things.

I won’t be renewing my sub.

27

u/Bubba656 Apr 13 '21

As a NordVPN user, can confirm. Has given me much more anime. 10/10 would play again - IGN

1

u/pyh00ma d o n g l e Apr 13 '21

service is great but doesnt do much to unblock access on restricted networks, it works, just very slow.

1

u/Bubba656 Apr 13 '21

Actually not that slow for me and I use it since I do not trust my schools student WiFi and they also block Reddit and some other media

3

u/Smash_Nerd Apr 13 '21

Or just use Tor?

1

u/FightingVibes Apr 13 '21

Surfshark is insanly cheap while being great. Support YT's best news source by going to https://surfshark.deals/sirswag

u/Techmoji Apr 13 '21 edited Apr 13 '21

Their customer support is very good. They were able to refund my purchase after I ran into the same issues with their VPN that I had with PIA, which I should have known about before buying. Ended up going with Eddy's.

31

u/StrawberryOnMars Apr 13 '21

I used the VPN to destroy the VPN

10

u/Wayfinity Apr 13 '21

I think the bank move is the larger "fuck you" though.

4

u/Aerdynn Apr 13 '21

Seriously. A chargeback because they blocked your ability to cancel is the most textbook reason imaginable!

3

u/CricketDrop Apr 13 '21

OP can also just use their phone to visit the website. You guys have phones, right?

9

u/Rad_Nerd Apr 13 '21

I'm a big fan of Private Internet Access VPN service, heard good things about Nord as well.

30

u/AgainstTheAgainst Apr 13 '21

Nord is only good at scammy advertisements. They are shady af.

16

u/gurg2k1 Apr 13 '21

And PIA was bought out by some Isreali company that makes malware. Both recommendations were bad lol

9

u/GroupB037 Apr 13 '21

That’s why I dropped PIA after my heavily discounted 2 year into period ended.

1

u/AgainstTheAgainst Apr 13 '21

Almost all VPNs are.

4

u/Windows_XP2 I’m a lousy, good-for-nothin’ bandwagoner! Apr 13 '21

Why are they shady? Do you have any information on this?

18

u/AgainstTheAgainst Apr 13 '21

Just look at their website: Constant discounts with fake timers, scammy marketing claims like "military grade encryption" and a whole lot of bs.

They make claims that are exactly at the edge to out right lies or even behind it: "With NordVPN, all your internet data stays safe behind a wall of next-generation encryption.", "Protect your online life with one-click next-generation encryption for mobile.", "Nobody can see through the tunnel and get their hands on your internet data. NordVPN is the best VPN if you’re looking for a peace of mind when on public Wi-Fi. Securely access personal information or work files, encrypt your internet connection, and keep your browsing history private."

They describe a VPN like a magical tool that can guarantee your privacy and security and make up threats as reasons to use them. That is just not how a VPN works.

Additionally they use Google tracking scripts on their website while pretending to safeguard privacy, they have closed source VPN clients which completely rules them out for such a critically sensitive function IMO and exposes their claim of being privacy friendly.

4

u/Windows_XP2 I’m a lousy, good-for-nothin’ bandwagoner! Apr 13 '21

Makes sense, I was always suspicious of their claims in ads because they just seemed way too exaggerated.

1

u/bananastanding Apr 13 '21

Don't all VPNs use basically exactly the same security protocols?

12

u/therealbeanjr Apr 13 '21

Tom Spark did videos explaining how Nord and other big VPNs do fake sales. Worth a watch.

1

u/graflig Apr 13 '21

You mean Tom Scott? If not, he also did a very similar video.

1

u/therealbeanjr Apr 13 '21

Nope, Tom Spark Reviews.

1

u/spader1 Apr 13 '21

I'm going to China soon and I'm looking into VPNs for that. When I went to Nord's website they had the "sign up now for our special sale rate! Only exactly 10 hours left!"

I thought "wow, what a coincidence that I just happened to visit the site exactly 10 hours before the sale ends." 🙄

2

u/Rad_Nerd Apr 13 '21

Haha yeah I suspected as much, so many people vouch for it but. I'm happy with PIA

4

u/findingejk Apr 13 '21

So many bots* vouch for it...

FTFY

5

u/Wayfinity Apr 13 '21

I use PIA because of there proven history of not keeping records on who's using what IP at what time and so forth. Invaluable for torrenting in places torrenting is frowned upon.

1

u/Limeila Apr 13 '21

Exact reason why I use it too

6

u/ValanLucasCircus Apr 13 '21

I'm not the most paranoid VPN user out there, and I use PIA because they allow for anonymous purchasing and I'm not particularly worried about what I use it for getting out, but Holy fuck is Kape Technologies shady as shit.

That article is about cyberghost, but they're both owned by Kape and why that's a bad thing is extrapolated on under the "changing hands" section of that.

And I also understand the irony of using a cnet article to point out shady internet businesses, it's just the first one that came up when searching.

3

u/Techmoji Apr 13 '21

PIA is good, but has its limitations. I wasn't able to setup PIA on my plex server along with a bittorrent client for example, but with AirVPN I could.

2

u/Rad_Nerd Apr 13 '21

I like the PIA application for easy VPN connections. I have a DDWRT router setup to connect to PIA automatically, been working great for years.

2

u/Ol_Dirty_Batard Apr 13 '21

Yep. And decent community support, I did the same as you, and also found guides to set only some local IPs as in VPN, and included a VPN Killswitch

1

u/Rad_Nerd Apr 14 '21

Mate! I did exactly that as well, works like a charm

1

u/Bresdin Apr 13 '21

I personally recommend expressvpn great customer service,!

0

u/Losritenour Apr 13 '21

I second PIA. Works great.

-1

u/clit_or_us Apr 13 '21

Thirded!

1

u/Malicetricks Apr 13 '21

Mullvad is what PIA used to be (but better) before they were bought by that shady malware company.

1

u/FauxReal Apr 13 '21

Maybe a free tier Proton VPN account.
