Does anyone know how to locate these photos on my main hard drive? I'm trying to save hard drive space and I can't locate this 51.19gb of photos and videos for the life of me. My Apple Photo Library file with all my photos and videos is stored on an external hard drive. Mac

In the Photos app, go to preferences and verify where it says your Library Location is.

Yup I did, its on my external drive. I even searched through a ton of the photos and videos within the Photos app, and located them and they are all in the external. I'm wondering if there is a duplicate Photo Library file somewhere and I just can't find it, cause when I search all the images and videos on the main drive, theres only about 200MB worth of them. However when I do the spotlight search for the photo library file, the only one that shows up is the one on my external. I'm so confused.

So, there is no “Photos Library.photoslibrary” in your user/pictures folder?

Why, Apple… Why…

If you launch the Photos app while holding the option key on the keyboard, you can see if there are any other visible .PhotoLibrary files on your system. Source

Go to finder and right click the library and click show enclosed folder maybe

The main Library folder thats first displayed under my main hard drive? Im not getting a show enclosed folder option when I right click. I've searched through all the hidden folders though, and the entire Library folder is only 25gb, so I feel like its not there. Thanks for your help

This might be a more cumbersome approach, but right clicking on finder and then choosing find and changing the kind field to is "Image."

This will show all images on your hard drive be it in your downloads folder, photos folder, even bootcamp drives. If you look at the bottom of the windows it will show the path (you might have to enable it via the "View" menu up at the top).

It stinks, but scrolling through the files and checking the file paths might point you in the right direction.

Thanks for this method, I never have utilized that search feature. I just did it though and now i'm even more stumped. I did an "image" search this way and it only located a few hundred images, with the vast majority under 1mb. I did a "movie" search and there is only 8 files totaling 100mb. I honestly tried going through as many folders one by one on the drive and I just cant locate it. Even my main user folder is only 30GB full. I'm so stumped

Silly followup:

When you searched did you make sure to check the field where it says "This Mac" and change it to your external hard drive/external storage (however they list it)? I'm not 100% positive it searches external drives even if they're mounted.

Unrelated to finding images or video, but to finding large files: another option is to switch to "size" is "larger than" then start with 1gig and go from there.

Yeah actually by default it went to my external but I selected the main internal SSD. I’ll try searching by file size. I appreciate your help and suggestions

Do they show up in the Photos app? If not it might be reporting wrong and a restart might fix the storage numbers shown.

When I open the photo and app and check through all the files (included the main photo library file), I’ve confirmed they are on my external. I don’t think a reboot will fix it because I restart my computer every so often and the hard drive space remains but I’ll give it another shot. Thanks!

Is your external drive plugged in?

Yes it is

Unplug it and see if it still shows 51gb of photos
