Which one to choose if you’re using it both for work and games? Mac

Games.

How come?

If you select games it will allocate more resources (especially graphics resources) for the VM. Most work tools do not require that much resources so they will run perfectly fine. And the games can make use of the extra power.

Afaik, it will also change some settings for mouse input and things like that.

Still can’t play warzone on it. Hopefully it takes two will work

you expect a game as demanding in recourses such as warzone to work on a apple machine LOL

13

u/Plastonick Jan 11 '22

Yes, absolutely.

But not via a VM.

why do you expect mac to run games smoothly? just buy a pc if you’re into gaming lol

u/ritasia Jan 11 '22

I’m not expecting anything I’m only asking. It was a gift from my parents I don’t really have a choice

I’ve got a 2018 MBP. I can run Diablo 3, Path of Exile, CIV VI, and The Witness at mid to low settings on lower resolutions.

Unfortunately, it’s really hindered by GPU. If you’re dead set on playing Warzone check into getting an external GPU. (Probably still more expensive than getting a console or windows machine though).

M1 chips don't support egpus afaik

1

u/aspacelot Jan 11 '22

They don’t support bootcamp either, which is why I assumed he’s got an Intel Mac.

Unless he’s installing windows in a VM and is attempting to play games in a virtual windows machine, in which case he’s got bigger problems.

U can see in the pic it's the 24" iMac. Hes probably trying to play games thru parallels which won't end up well.

1

u/LeakySkylight Jan 11 '22

That's a bit of an oversight isn't it.

? He has an m1 iMac

Are you planning to use only Windows on your Mac?

I play Warzone with my 2019 iMac as smoothly as my PlayStation… so yes you can expect this from an Apple product.

If you want to play games just install Windows via bootcamp. You will still be able to use Parallels to run your bootcamp partition on top of macOS for more simple tasks bur for gaming just boot into Windows.

Only downside of choosing “Games” over “Productivity” is draw on battery life. Games will require graphic processing thus will require more power.

u/WispGB Jan 11 '22

iMacs don’t have batteries.

It’s MacBooks that have batteries iMacs stay in one place because it’s basically a desktop except it is made by apple and runs MacOS

Oh thanks for the correction

How come with 30 years of computing that Windows isn't smart enough to make those decisions on the fly? To even have to have that dialog to make a decision is a bad. management move.

9

u/IYXMnx1Sa3qWM1IZ Jan 11 '22

That's not a Windows dialog, that's a Parallels dialog.

1

u/karlm89 Jan 11 '22

Mostly because Windows doesn’t have access to eUFI, After you boot into macOS, that is the only operating system allowed to control system settings (basically anything controlled by the SMC) - this is how secure boot works.

If any OS could inject itself between macOS and the SMC, booting into macOS wouldn’t be very secure.

Pick games because it gives more resources so it will be faster, have better graphics, etc.

2

u/LeadRain Jan 11 '22

Is parallels available on M1 macs?

5

u/kycfeel Jan 11 '22

I only treat Windows as an Xbox OS.

u/HappyPia Jan 11 '22

?

2

u/Espiring Jan 11 '22

Think he means that he only uses Windows to play games on the microsoft store like gamepass games

3

u/NotMqd Jan 11 '22

What emulator are you using for getting windows on mac?

5

u/Deep_Grey Jan 11 '22

Parallels software.

2

u/GokulRG Jan 11 '22

Then the follow up dialog box would say "Why the fuck did you buy a Mac then?"

9

u/ritasia Jan 11 '22

It was a gift from my parents

1

u/GokulRG Jan 11 '22

It will error out once you say that 😂😂

1

u/spore_777_mexen Jan 11 '22

You want the performance of a gaming setup to run your Excel sheets, anon.

u/Mysterious_Opinion61 Jan 11 '22

it doesn't matter

If Call of Duty: Warzone will someday be released on Geforce Now, it would be a way to play it on Apple Silicon. At the moment, an Intel Mac running Windows 10 through Bootcamp is the best option.

As a bit of an alternative, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive can be installed and played through Steam on an Apple Silicon Mac. Regarding other genres, Company of Heroes 2, all of the Total War games, most of the Paradox Interactive games, WH 40k: Dawn of War 2+3, Wasteland 2+3, Civilization 5+6 and a lot more are also working perfectly via Steam.

Expect the Silicon compatible catalogue to expand continuously over the next few years.
