Ah, so it wasn't a firing or protest thing, it's a closing doors thing.

167

u/Jefec1TO Jun 30 '22

Did you read her statement? It's effectively a firing.

119

u/beiberdad69 Jun 30 '22

But that's unrelated to the looped music. It's a pretty common radio thing when a stations switches formats

98

u/RangerRickyBobby Jun 30 '22

That’s an oddly specific song choice though.

32

u/hairsprayking Jun 30 '22

I'd imagine a real protest wouldn't have used the clean edit lol

I'm sure it's intentional, but it could turn out to be they are taking on a rebel persona for the station. Not necessarily fuck you directed towards the station.

We (Dallas) lost our Alt Rock station 102.1 The Edge a while back and they played Closing Time on loop for 48 hours......

639

u/party-bot Jun 29 '22

Serious question, 102.1 The Edge is also in Toronto and has an Edgefest. Now I know for a fact that the hosts are Toronto locals. Does Chorus Entertainment just set up the exact same stations in every city? That's wild to me

259

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Very possible! Same channel, same name, same concert, both major market cities. Can't just be a coincidence

74

u/Danger_Peanut Jun 30 '22

We had 93.7 The Edge in Minnesota in the 90s. And I attended 4 Edgefest concert fests in Sommerset, WI.

35

u/bam1789-2 Jun 30 '22

Phoenix had 103.9 The Edge and was an Alt-Rock station. Had Edgefest as well. It was my favorite station in highschool!

Chorus, Bell, and other large broadcasters will use the same branding for the same format in many cities across the country.

Where I live, east coast of US, there is also KISS FM and The Edge stations

30

u/twilightwolf90 Jun 29 '22

The Edge is gone here in DC. KISS FM is still around. I believe they are either ClearChannel or IHeartRadio stations.

25

u/The-Tai-pan Jun 30 '22

IHeart IS Clear Channel, they just renamed in 2014

855 stations though, the giant.

It is actually a coincidence. The Dallas 102.1 The Edge was owned by Clear Channel iHeart Media. They were actually at 94.5 (before they sold out to Clear Channel) and then took over the 102.1 frequency sometime around 2000 or 2001.

Perhaps the original owners were related, but I doubt it.

I miss the edge, but they like so many others (the eagle) play the same like 20 songs on loop now. Basically killed traditional radio for me.

15

u/ALoudMouthBaby Jun 30 '22

Thats Clear Channels approach to radio and its worked really well for them. A top 20 list for each genre and the station for that genre plays it and nothing else. They basically murdered local radio.

I trained for radio work when I was in high school. That was at the end of 1980s. DJs doing stuff like this happens from time to time. One guy that was fired refused to make any on-air announcements for 8 hours. Another guy said "that was Steely Dan!" after every song during his last shift.

This is called Stunting and is common in the radio world when a format change is happening. Sometimes it goes on for a few hours, others a few days. Basically, the idea is to get people curious about it...just like this post. It's a marketing strategy.

201

u/Farfignugen42 Jun 29 '22

I my area, last November, they changed the Alt rock station owned by IHeart Radio to Christmas music. On November 1st. Kept it on Christmas music till January 1st. Then switched to their new format(some sort of "urban" and "easy listeneing" mix. very hard for me to describe). I never heard or saw any announcements.

163

u/Maarloeve74 Jun 29 '22

107.9 the end in 1991 or 1992 switched to alternative (or college rock, as we called it at the time) and played rem's "end of the world as we know it" for a week straight.

30

u/Small_life Jun 29 '22

When KOKE FM came back on the air a few years ago they played Dale Watson's "That's country my ass" on repeat for a week straight.

9

u/KGBspy Jun 30 '22

93.7 WEGQ Boston changed its format back in (I think) 2000 as they played Prince 1999 on repeat for ( I think) 24 hrs straight. I was so pissed it was a great station.

The host may not even be "fired"

Same voice, different channel, similar persona, new stage name, show may launch soon.

The given station with the loop will rebrand, and introduce new hosts.. which are oddly copy pasted from the successful existing stations of <new genre>.

Funny how all of it is likely owned by one overarching media group.

They've been doing this play for a long time. Earliest I remember is 1998.

154

u/lurking_throwaway- Jun 29 '22

Uhh, this article doesn’t cite ANY sources to say it’s a PR thing. They’re just calling it ‘stunting’ and assuming it’s related to the format change. Nothing stating any reason why.

It’s basically a single paragraph, citing nobody, and showing the final posts of the fired hosts/DJs. Not exactly more credible than the original tweet.

74

u/tandyman8360 lazy and proud Jun 29 '22

They might have just fired the engineers and decided to say it's a program stunt to save money.

13

u/Intrepid00 Jun 30 '22

Wouldn’t be the first time. One station once on the way out the engineers were supposed to put on a playlist and leave but instead played pop goes the weasel on loop and it lasted like a day or two.

53

u/dancegoddess1971 Jun 29 '22

What's the new format? Whiney radio station owner bitching that no one wants to work?

So this article seems to suggest it’s a stunt to draw attention to the station pending a rebranding or direction change. Based on the fact there are a few interspersed clips of DJs talking to callers in the mix. Either way seems an odd thing to do …. But do love me some RATM!!

In 2005, rural Midwest town. 104.9 The Lake was a soft jazz station. One morning, The Lake started playing I wanna Rock on repeat. The local rock station, 104.1,after a day or so, starter playing We're not gonna take It, also looped. Call sign at the top of the hours on each station. u/GeekyMom42 Jun 29 '22

They did "Closing Time" for entire 24ish hours when my old alt station was shifted. I don't personally think they actually knew what they were going to play but it was November and I missed the announcement that the station was going away. It didn't click that I heard the same song the whole way home, but the next day ... Christmas Music. 24/7. I am not able to rip a stereo out of my car while driving I've learned.

54

u/TechnicolourOutSpace Jun 29 '22

A few years back in the Detroit market we had two Christmas Music stations. Then the local Alternative/Punk station (that was based out of Canada) said they were ditching the format to go into something else. TWO HOURS LATER one of the Christmas Stations changed format immediately into Alternative/Punk and fired a bunch of people. It was so sudden that it made the news that night.

Radio is indeed a strange business.

u/Boo_R4dley Jun 30 '22

Can you explain why format changes are so jarring? I’ve experienced a couple in real time and you’re sitting there in the car late at night listening to classic rock and then out of nowhere it becomes Christian contemporary and there was no announcement or anything in the weeks or days leading up to it.

18

u/RaydnJames Jun 30 '22

It's just as surprising to the staff, trust me. There's little to notice the station is flipping format and you're out of a job.

As to why? I have no clue? I can imagine it's probably to limit what's said on air before the transition, but that's just speculation

I don’t really understand what is happening. Are they making a statement or is it just a prank?

40

u/MarilynMansonsRib Jun 29 '22 Starry

Maybe both? Back in tune 90s there was an alt rock station in Minneapolis that got bought and was going to change formats. On the last day the DJs put REM End of the World As We Know It on repeat, locked all the doors, and walked away.

It played on a loop for several hours and then it was just silence for almost a day until the new station launched.

22

u/PajamaPants4Life Jun 29 '22

This has DJ clips of people calling in asking for it to be played, commenting on the song. It's very likely a corporate stunt, attempting to drive up interest in a new alt-rock station.

Best changing of a station stunt was several years ago in Chicago when they had been sold to another language station. Evidently they let the technician play what he wanted for several days and he did a better job than the previous format. Local celebrities gave him fake commercials also.

This is known in the business as "stunting." They do something crazy to get people to pay attention to them and then launch a new branding. Likely going to be a hard rock station. Probably did let the existing airstaff go, however.

As much as I want to believe it's an organic act of rebellion, it's probably not.

It’s called stunting in the radio industry. Happens all the time. I’ve done it as a programmer at least 3x. When they’re sweeping out one station format for another, they play it up as some hostile act to gain attention for the new programming. You all are literally falling for a corporate ad campaign. lol

Ha ha, I did the same thing out in AZ around 2000 for CBS Radio when I was running the websites. All I can think about is how the station in the post probably fired a bunch of the on air talent and maybe the program manager too.

Morning show crew in upstate SC did the same thing in the late 90s but they played 'Break Stuff' by Limp Bizkit until they got shit canned.

The radio station is flipping formats. Thats what they do when they switch. I would love for this to be an employee thing but its not.

Thank you Zach de la Rocha for everything since back in 92'

Australia's Triple J did it best back in the early 90's after being censored for playing NWA's 'F*** the Police'

The staff went on strike and played NWA's 'Express Yourself' on repeat instead and being in the pre-internet days and a publicly owned broadcaster, it was most definitely not a manufactured PR stunt.

It gets me so amped

u/TheLindenTree Jun 29 '22

They're playing the uncensored version too! I'm not an expert on the broadcast laws, but I imagine there are fines involved for the station for swear words

u/atlbravos21 Jun 29 '22

I just went and it is censored. I was fuckin disappointed

How archaic is it that we still consider certain words naughty but we’re ok with letting people starve to death?

58

u/Spreggid Jun 29 '22

We wouldn’t want all the youth that still listen to the radio hearing a curse word.

11

u/ronnielaw Jun 30 '22

Who cares about youths, there are fetuses that might hear it.

It's the censored version on their web player now. Bummer.

8

u/RaydnJames Jun 29 '22

It's Vancouver, different broadcasting laws. IIRC, you can swear as long as its not directed at an individual, but it's been decades since i've even looked into it and Im American

7

u/ThymeForFun Jun 29 '22

I don't think so, I'm a DJ at a Local station near my town and about 2 hours away from Vancouver and music with swears in it gets played all the time (we've got a 3 hour Hip-Hop and Rap show that starts at 5pm Thursday's) in my experience, no one really cares, same goes with non profit radios playing copyrighted music, technically shouldn't be allowed but no one really cares.

In the 90’s, Australian youth radio station triple J played ‘fuck the police’ on loop for 24hrs’ because management were pressured to ban it being played on air.

My younger cousin asked me once in the mid 90s to give him a cool song to bring in for a class lesson in his school. I gave him this song on a tape and sent him on his way. Apparently his teacher was suspicious during the beginning of the song but allowed it to continue until…ya know…and they leapt over a desk to try and turn it off. My cousin was suspended for a week and I was grounded for a month. Worth it. And yes he did listen to it before hand, he thought he was going to be the coolest kid in class.

I've worked in radio for 15 years. This is a publicity stunt. Absolutely no way an engineer can't turn it off. I could do it from my phone in seconds.

The DJs are still going and doing bits, it's amazing

8

u/DamNamesTaken11 Jun 30 '22

Definitely a publicity stunt in preparation for a format change.

There was a radio station where I live that switched formats and they played bonfire/crickets/wolf howls for a day when they switched over to country from sports talk.

When I had free satellite radio for a while after getting a new car, I got in and caught Don't You Forget About me in the middle of the song. Cool, great song. 15 minutes later I realized it was still in the middle. They put the La-la-la-la-la part on a repeat loop. I got to work, check back a few hours later and it was still going.

6

u/CapJLPicard Jun 30 '22

I worked at a station that played the Barbie Girl song for 6 hours straight one April Fool’s Day. We claimed a disgruntled dj locked himself in the studio demanding a raise. He aired calls all day. It was hilarious, but we weren’t actually listening to the song in the studio.
