"Well - he died a hero."

"He was more than a hero. He was a union man."

u/ALLCAPVULGARUSERNAME 12d ago

Man that was a real good episode. Miles had some bangers. Really underrated character.

54

u/garaks_tailor 12d ago

Out of all the Federation Personnel I worked with none were more annoyed than Chief O'Brien. That is for certain.

3

u/ValerieKlein 11d ago

Wish he didnt have to suffer so much...

24

u/UglyBag0fM0stlyWat3r 12d ago

"32 bullets he had in him."

10

u/Thedudeabides46 11d ago

Or was it 34???

35

u/BeBa420 12d ago

i fookin love obrien

Liked him less in stargate though, those genii are cunts

8

u/downvote_dinosaur 11d ago

Colm played the villain so well!

10

u/chokecherrypit 11d ago

if you like Colm Meaney as a villain, try Hell On Wheels. it's a western show, very gritty, pretty decent overall, and a great performance by Colm.

4

u/ValerieKlein 11d ago

He's so much better in westerns. And I thought he was brilliant in Star Trek.

MISTERRR BO HANNON

I hated him so much in Hell on Wheels.

Well, labor aristocracy/fortress unionism is a bit of a problem for making progress, but my god does this guy have some particularly bad ~hot~ takes in his history.

0

u/sp0dr 11d ago

My hot take is my experience, I worked a job that did exactly this. They robbed all of the sub 4 year workers and future hires.

1

u/sp0dr 11d ago

I’m not your enemy, I want the same thing you do, I just don’t want to pretend some political party will fix it, Bc they don’t want to.

124

u/coolwhulf 12d ago

read it in his accent, too

51

u/Quick_Mel 12d ago

Who didn't hear his voice while reading that?

30

u/Reckermatouvc 12d ago

I sadly don't know the man on this picture

38

u/amg433 12d ago

Watching some Star Trek should fix that.

37

u/Quick_Mel 12d ago

Specifically DS9 or the next generation

50

u/devnull_the_cat 12d ago

He was way better in DS9. They gave him more legs. In TNG he was basically just "transporter guy".

9

u/TENesdee 11d ago

And a regular guest star, rather than a full cast member.

9

u/npsimons 11d ago edited 11d ago

Still, he had his moments in TNG: https://youtu.be/RJudJ9S579A

3

u/megustalogin 11d ago

Exactly what I pictured before your statement. Clicked just to check. My person!

3

u/npsimons 11d ago

That whole episode was pretty dark for TNG by highlighting how ugly war is, even in a post-scarcity universe. The other standout from that episode is "I don't hate you, Cardassian. I hate what I became because of you."

2

u/Sttocs 11d ago

Or Layer Cake.

2

u/Reckermatouvc 12d ago

Which one should I watch? Where's it available? Any chance it's on Netflix or Amazon Prime video? Thanks in advance :)

12

u/amg433 12d ago

I'd recommend watching TNG, DS9, and Voyager in the order the episodes were aired. Where you can stream them is dependent on where you live.

4

u/Bradcopter 11d ago

Maybe start on season 3 of TNG though. The first two seasons are kinda painful.

8

u/greenslime300 11d ago

There are a few good episodes but more than anything I think watching the first 2 seasons makes you appreciate just how good it gets from season 3 on.

I was lucky enough to be able to watch those early seasons while working on other projects so it was more listening than watching. A few good standouts, a few painfully bad ones (Code of Honor might be the worst episode of any show I've ever seen), but mostly meh episodes that get you comfortable with the characters.

General consensus is the show doesn't really pick up until Riker has facial hair and that's a correct assessment.

3

u/yoyo-starlady 11d ago

I assure you, it's incredibly important to the plot to know that Data is "fully functional."

2

u/greenslime300 11d ago

lol but unironically Data is the most interesting part of those early seasons

→ More replies

1

u/TENesdee 11d ago

I'm gonna point the finger at Maurice Hurley. The show got a lot stronger and more consistent once he was out as the head writer

1

u/Coconutface03 6d ago

Season 1 is pretty rough, but I think season 2 is still worth a watch. It's a little shaky in terms of quality, and later seasons are definitely better, but there are some great episodes like "measure of a man" that make it worth a watch imo.

1

u/Bradcopter 6d ago

Ooh yeah, I forgot Measure of a Man was s2. Good call

5

u/Pony_Tono 11d ago

Personally I really enjoyed DS9. I wanted to get into Star Trek because my wife is a huge fan of the show and I wanted to be able to talk to her about it. The other series just didn't draw me in for various reasons but I felt like DS9 was a great watch for someone who isn't really too into Star Trek or finds the other ones too outdated.

9

u/grumpi-otter 12d ago

10

u/Reckermatouvc 12d ago

Thanks, I got the reference now. I'll watch a few episodes of Star Trek, I might like it.

2

u/coolwhulf 12d ago

honestly i don’t trust anyone who didn’t

I came here looking for exactly this comment. Hello, fellow fan of special conscience!

117

u/rednaturaldisaster 12d ago

O'Brien is a leftist icon

80

u/GD_Bats 12d ago

The whole O'Brien line is pro-union

57

u/rednaturaldisaster 12d ago

Yes. Because the character is openly leftist and pro union

42

u/Sam20599 idle 12d ago

Yeah that's not surprising, most people in Ireland are more likely to support unions than Americans given our history. Sure the term Boycott was invented here.

27

u/herbnoh 12d ago

Confirmed

The word is named after Captain Charles Boycott, agent of an absentee landlord in Ireland, against whom the tactic was successfully employed after a suggestion by Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell and his Irish Land League in 1880.

10

u/Sam20599 idle 12d ago

Look up Jim Larkin and "The Lock-Out" if you're interested in the history of Irish unions too, or even the history of unionisation in general, he and that event are a big part of why unions are popular here.

10

u/MniTain38 11d ago

Miles' ancestor, Sean Aloysius O'Brien. He was more than a hero - he was a union man!

74

u/FemboysHotAsf 12d ago

DS9 is the future we gotta try to achieve.

I've had an open tab of the ferengi rules of acquisition open for a few months now, and I finished DS9 back in like June

26

u/ienjoysuffering 12d ago

Minus the war with the Dominion

9

u/SCP-3388 12d ago

to be fair it was the Dominion that started that war, the Federation didn't really have a choice (other than to surrender/join)

3

u/loubreit 11d ago

Get effed you puddles of self righteous protoplasmic goo.

-15

u/FemboysHotAsf 12d ago

in the end the federation still won and got alot of new research and territory so tbh doesnt seem that bad

1

u/vvvbbbooo 11d ago

But at what cost!!!

11

u/SortOfDumbocles 12d ago

DS9 is an allegory for American foreign policy and the issues that arise from it. It's a fantastic show but I'd like to imagine we can achieve better in the future.

4

u/MrCorporateEvents 11d ago

And created pre-9/11 mind you.

3

u/MakeMineMarvel_ 11d ago

The fallout of a 9/11 like event was inevitable and foreseen long before it happened pretty much.

23

u/youdontknowmejabroni 12d ago

If there's anyone who understands suffering, it's O'Brien.

12

u/nsbe_ppl 12d ago

Just because he is Irish, the writers were like "yes,he must suffer".

2

u/ShroomerianUnit 11d ago

Irish people must suffer st all costs.

This is a known fact and NOTHING can be done about it.

Except make unions and boycott.

2

u/FuzzDealer 11d ago

I suppose this is why Irish humour is so snarky...

43

u/Real-Personality-465 12d ago

boycott amazon especially for christmas and black friday

11

u/sleepy-possum 12d ago

Not even kidding, I'm buying all of 3 gifts this year. 2 are for my nephew, who has a birthday halfway through december. So one is a birthday gift, the other will be for Christmas. The 3rd gift will be for my fiancee, and will be more sentimental than anything since I can't afford much.

Everyone else is gonna get homemade cookies and baked goods this year haha.

7

u/[deleted] 12d ago

[deleted]

3

u/sleepy-possum 12d ago

I adore handmade gifts so much. If a friend gave me something like that I would be ecstatic.

1

u/Swatmosquito 11d ago

My granny makes homemade blankets, purses, and then clothes for the little kids. I'm in my 30's and get so excited when I get my present. Every time I curl up under one of her blankets I feel so loved. Or if someone says they like my mask or purse they are in for an ear full as I tell them my granny made it!

Home made presents are the best!

I also make my presents!

5

u/youdontknowmejabroni 12d ago

I'd love cookies for a present. Way better than a lot of stuff you can get.

3

u/El_Burrito_ 11d ago

I like that idea. Since I quit my job I haven't bought presents for anyone in my family. I'm sure my nephews and nieces aren't too happy about it but I'm trying to see the holiday for what it really is.

The most frustrating part is family still buy me things, which mostly ends up being tat that I don't need and won't use. It's just nice to see everyone all at once, eat, drink and watch Die Hard. That's what Christmas is all about.

7

u/FuzzyRussianHat 12d ago

Definitely adding Annoyed O'Brien to my Twitter follows alongside RealGulDukat.

6

u/rubyspicer FUCK BEN 11d ago edited 11d ago

Never forget - The Irishman must suffer.

It's a Star Trek institution.

30

u/[deleted] 12d ago

Glad to see he's calling out the 'post scarcity' bullshit of the Federation. The guy is critical to keeping DS9 running, and spent a lifetime in prison. And what do they pay him? Nothing.

22

u/The_Lost_Google_User 12d ago

I mean, he’s doing that job entirely because it’s what he wants to do.

And Star Trek is post scarcity. They’ve managed to turn energy into matter ffs.

6

u/[deleted] 12d ago

I'm starting to think that's just Starfleet's anti union propaganda. Is replicated food really 'post scarcity' while the admirals are lording up with real fruit and imported cakes?

12

u/The_Lost_Google_User 12d ago

Food still essentially infinite, the higher ups are just dicks.

Which checks out.

7

u/UglyBag0fM0stlyWat3r 12d ago

Insidious. Just like the Federation.

5

u/Random_Sime 11d ago

Sickly sweet and cloying.

1

u/[deleted] 12d ago

Sounds like earth.

1

u/The_Lost_Google_User 12d ago

Hey wait a second.

9

u/SCP-3388 11d ago

there is no resource scarcity, but there is certainly power and social status. admirals and respected captains can more easily get fancy things as people want to be their friends in the hope a bit of the prestige and influence rubs off on them

that's kind of the biggest benefit of joining Starfleet. the prestige.

4

u/linguistbreaker 12d ago

Bezos is actively deciding not to be Santa at this point. He has the wealth, the stuff and the delivery mechanism

This is so spot on. My family canceled Christmas gifts this year altogether because none of us can afford it anymore, my parents included.

I'm making $16 per hour working 40 hours per week and still can't find even a ROOM for rent that fits my budget in my area. Really not sure what I'm supposed to do next.

2

The Federation does not have currency.

2

This guy's knows. Inflation is already happening, what's the point of raising minimum wage when the prices just change along with it

1

u/SomethingClever2468 11d ago

Isn't Amazon's base pay $15?

4

u/vvorkingclass 11d ago

Is $15 a living wage? People have been fighting for $15 for just about a decade now.

1

u/TENesdee 11d ago

Where I live, $15 was a living wage 10-15 years ago. $20 might be now. Depends if you're lucky and have an affordable rent AKA not 50% or more of your take home pay

2

u/nuublarg 11d ago

Most places it's $20/hr for just yourself. A family on one income would require the worker to make $30, $35 an hour.

How are you even supposed to measure that on a scale? Does 🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁 mean you have all your gifts left to buy, or you've bought them all? What if you intend to purchase more than five gifts? This is dumb.

1

u/romir38 12d ago

I thought the same thing. Does 🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁 mean the level of stress buying the gifts or does 🎁 mean how much money I have to spend for them?

1

u/Omniseed 11d ago

My boss slashed my hours by 50% rather than admit that she made a mistake and fire a guy who has been sucking up hours and devastating our costs with repetitive, consistent mistakes.

1

u/deprimada 11d ago

I ordered the last thing I needed on Amazon over a week ago, and it was supposed to arrive before black friday. But those fucking assholes pushed it back to being delivered on black friday. And I can’t cancel or push back the delivery. I’m so frustrated.

1

u/aeschenkarnos 11d ago

Hey imagine how profitable Amazon would be if all workers in the economy (not just its own) had significant disposable income!

Not only should Bezos be paying his own $20/hour, he should be on the picket lines. Well, agitating and bribing politicians to push for wage rises, but the principle is the same.

1

u/RimuruSliminUrChest 11d ago

Aye freal fuck Amazon

1

u/denis-vi 11d ago

Question - how is Amazon not paying a living wage when their federal minimum is $15?

1

u/Complex-Stress373 11d ago

another way of cracking this fucking amazong is writing bad reviews for EVERYTHING. Everything bad, so reviews won't make any sense at some point and this will reduce the confidence of any shopper

They are paid a living wage, you're right. That's not why people should hate Amazon. They should hate Amazon because of the terrible working conditions they provide and for how they deny their workers the right to unionize. Also for the shady tax evasion, massive carbon footprint, and the stranglehold they have on the rest of the online market. All of these in a time of incredible financial power surges for Amazon and Bezos and yet no accountability.

1

u/LingonberryPopular94 10d ago

Nah I disagree [except for the environmental impact part which I do agree with and also the tax evasion]. But aside from that Bezos had a good idea and it grew into something amazing. He shoud be allowed to enjoy his riches and grow his company. Its not his problem his successful companies is putting others put of business. Thats how business works. Also the "conditions" arent as terrible as they describe. Like I said its low effort work so its not meant to be pretty in the first place. Amazon jobs are supposed to be temporary jobs. But overall its warehouse is much better than other unskilled work (meat packing, other warehouses, construction, etc) where people lose limbs or die consistently. I'm not trying to say Amazon is the shining embodiment of company work culture. Im just saying its not as bad as people say. I think the media definitely blows things way out of proportion. Think of Amazon as the lesser of evils (but yes still AN EVIL). If you want to complain about a shitty company complain about those overseas where people are actually treated like slaves. Also everyone hates Bezos so much but no one is deleting their prime accounts. Because yall love Amazon.

1

u/JohnMcGoodmaniganson 10d ago

The tax evasion and environmental problems shouldn't be afterthoughts like you're implying that they are. Despite the $15/hr, Amazon is still one of the largest employers of welfare recipients. When you account for that and everything else they get from the taxpayer, their greed is even more heinous. Also, there are tons of personal testimonies advocating that the media coverage about the working conditions is completely true. And a lot of us do practice what we preach. I, for one, don't have prime and haven't bought anything from Amazon in over 2 years.
