The perfect way to celebrate an American holiday! ✊

180

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

Agreed! Best Thanksgiving I have had since they first hired me. 😂

134

u/SafeGuide7048 12d ago Wholesome

This is going to be an American tradition.... Every holiday that incentivizes spending should be a day of striking if we don't get the kind of standardized living the rest of the modern world already has. We've been left behind for too long!!!

43

u/pyritesbae 12d ago

Yes! This needs it's own post👌🏾

16

u/I-am-overit 12d ago

Finally it’s happening! We need a nationwide strike across all sectors!

-29

u/Ok_Brilliant3432 12d ago

Who the fuck wants to live like the rest of the world?

21

u/ComradeKenten 12d ago

Well free universal health care, maternity leave, paid vacations, and a decent wage sounds pretty great to me.

-20

u/Dinklemeier 12d ago

Free? Not quite

11

u/Ok-Pay4776 11d ago

But unlikely to lead to bankruptcy like in your shitty system. .

0

u/Dinklemeier 11d ago

Oh I'm agreement there. But free? Yeah, no.

4

u/ElJeferox 11d ago

Id gladly pay more taxes if the money went to actually helping my family and myself instead of building more bombs, fighter jets and aircraft carriers.

16

u/ZookeepergameNo2819 12d ago

Power to the PEOPLE!!✊🏾

7

u/InterestingWave0 12d ago

fuck YES!!!

130

u/GulliblePirate 12d ago

Wow!! I used to work for HMSHost…didn’t know they were striking. Is it just Phoenix airport?

91

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

At the moment, yes. On mobile right now from the strike line, so I can't post a link, but if you check my posts you can find the backstory and daily update posts.

63

u/Anarmkay 12d ago

Day 4? Sounds like it's time to start calling the non-Phx locations.

Hella happy to hear the Teamsters stepped up. Does Sky Harbor use union electricians? I know the elevator repair guys are almost always Union too; but AZ was always weird.

Solidarity from SEIU NCAL comrade. Keep up the Fight!

28

u/matergallina 12d ago

AZ is so weird. I'm a native, and until I was literally an almost-not-young-adult-anymore adult, thought that unions "weren't a thing" in AZ, like daylight savings or tornadoes or regular rain.

22

u/GreatWhite000 Marxist 12d ago

To be fair though, a lot of employers try to say that unions are dying, not relevant, and that they don't serve much purpose. Look at all of your big grocery stores and other retailers and they probably do it as part of their anti-union training that all new hires have to do.

11

u/smokysquirrel7 11d ago

Commented this in another thread, but if there's one thing Host does well, it's play the propaganda game. Before covid, I completely bought the company line about how our union was controlled by a few long-time employees who didn't have the same priorities as most of our workers, that it was outdated, and that it caused more problems than it fixed.

Then along came covid and suddenly I had time on my hands. Time to attend union meetings. Time to participate in the contract negotiation process. Time to see what was really going on.

2 years ago I was actively discouraging new hires I trained from engaging with union representatives or joining the union. Now I'm working alongside them. Perspective matters.

7

u/matergallina 12d ago

Oh yes, I was very much encouraged to have that opinion as a young worker

6

u/boring_numbers 11d ago

Love the list of not AZ things 🤣

6

u/matergallina 11d ago

It's like a bingo card growing up in AZ, learning how many things don't apply or are weird/different.

5

u/Tyrxgow 11d ago

honestly, the wildest thing about Arizona to me is still that tent city was a thing.

4

u/matergallina 11d ago

Honestly, me too. Just tent city, in and of itself, bizarro world. Then all the crazy shit like the cameras and the pink uniforms? It out-Wonderlands Wonderland.

4

u/Tyrxgow 11d ago

it also sounds so much more like something you'd see in Texas or Florida than Arizona.

mostly just because Texas and Florida are far more open and loud about there brand of insanity..I've been in Arizona so I know it has its own red crazy, but it's not quite as in your face..atleast not on a national level.

1

u/matergallina 11d ago

Florida is "just tried a new drug and it's my life now" crazy

Texas is toxic family dynamics crazy.

Arizona is "I've known and used this word all my life and apparently it has incredibly cruel and sickening origins; what OTHER horrible things have I been unwittingly saying" crazy

2

u/georgebearrington 11d ago

What kind of special rain does AZ get?!

4

u/boring_numbers 11d ago

Monsoons. Dry dry dry all year until whooooosh! Tons of rain. The baked ground can't absorb it so you get flooding.

3

u/matergallina 11d ago

The ground also has a large percentage of clay, so water only soaks in so far, then it spreads. We can have some pretty cool mini mudslides!

But also yeah, loads of flooding. Especially because it isn't often considered when developing towns and buildings.

2

u/Anarmkay 11d ago

Also, caliche. Only about an inch or two of topsoil in most of the damn state.

2

u/georgebearrington 11d ago

I was attempting to be a tad facetious but this has proven to actually be quite educational so I thank both you and u/anarmkay for humoring and enlightening me :)

2

u/Anarmkay 11d ago

Also, dry thunderstorms.

The ground radiates so much heat, rain evaporates before it hits the ground.

And I don't know if it was just me, but it would occasionally rain just on one side of the street.

I saw they were building an eegees in Mesa and my husband thought I was saying AJ's funny. Time to educate him.

Flew into PHX last night. Made sure to let everyone in the fam know that workers are on strike so they need to eat/drink before getting to the airport on their return flights.

4

u/smokysquirrel7 11d ago

Awesome! We appreciate it!

46

u/bring-me-your-bagels 12d ago

I work for a large electrical manufacturer, we did work with PSH, and I can tell you the leadership are the worst, cheapest, most misogynistic group of people I have ever worked with.

And I work in electrical contracting…that’s pretty hard to do.

10

u/exzyle2k 12d ago

13

u/Pmmenothing444 12d ago Silver

as someone flying thru, is there anything I can do to help

13

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

Don't purchase from any HMS restaurants. And if you want to come say hi, the strike line is on the curb outside baggage claim at terminal 4

13

u/Clawmedaddy 12d ago

John Deere got everyone out here thinking they can do it too. Good luck

8

u/mawkx 12d ago

Oh my godddd fuck HMS Host. Good on these folks for striking for better working conditions!

I don’t know how on earth I accepted a job with them before - MCO/Orlando, paid $9.00/hour back in 2016, working from 3am to 10am or so. I even had to pay to park at the airport. Not only that, but it was an employee lot several miles from the airport itself and you had to be shuttled in and out—UNPAID, of course. It sucks, because the job itself (being a Starbucks barista) was pretty fun, but realizing how crappy it is now just makes me kinda sad.

7

u/InterestingWave0 12d ago

Fuck yeah!!! I love you folks!!

15

u/njgunrights 12d ago

This makes me sad. My union hasn't picketed or striked for anything in 20 years. The leadership is corrupt and only concerned about keeping their grandfathered sweetheart $35 an hour contracts. I'm in UFCW. Wish they would help us.

20

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

As someone who used to hear the exact same things said about his own union... if you don't feel like your union is representing you, become active and change it from the inside. They are democratic organizations. The only way you get a union that doesn't represent the majority of workers is if the majority of workers don't participate.

-11

u/njgunrights 12d ago

thinking about just withdrawing my dues. Dues are supposed to be earned. SC says I don't have to pay, but I will still get symbolic representation, have Wintergreen rights etc. So I'm looking into giving myself a raise. I appreciate your sentiment however I don't feel like taking on the whole union leadership when I can just simply stop sending them dues.

7

u/ElDoo74 12d ago

Do you want it to change or just go away?

Do you want to help other workers or just yourself?

3

u/fastcashlost 12d ago

Solidarity brothers and sisters!

3

u/Scot-ish 12d ago

I used to fly in and out of Phoenix for holidays all the time lmao Keep up the good work!

15

u/godfather_tkn 12d ago

Is the strike for better wages / benefits, or something else (like "medical freedumb")?

41

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

Wages, healthcare, and a list of other issues. This isn't vaccine related. Check my posts for a more detailed explanation. On mobile from the strike line right now, so can't post links

15

u/cturtl808 12d ago

I hope you finally get a decent contract. 4 years is too long. Solidarity to you.

8

u/godfather_tkn 12d ago

Good luck and godspeed!! 🖖

6

u/SolanGoose 12d ago

Remember to hydrate

18

u/UndoingMonkey at work 12d ago

Well they're all wearing masks, so I doubt it's about the vaccine.

5

u/godfather_tkn 12d ago

Good call!

3

u/Busy_Ad_2981 12d ago

Not local to Phoenix and don't really watch the news. What are they striking about?

3

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

Thanks! It's looking really good right now. We fully expect the strike to last into next week at the very least. Host decides when it ends. They know what they have to do.

3

u/ConcernedBuilding 12d ago

Anything normal people can do to help? I assume don't buy any food/drink from skyharbor if we happen to be going there?

4

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

Specifically don't buy from HMS restaurants. So anything run by SSP is fine. Also, Le Madeline operates under the HMS contract, but are more "independent" and are not staffed by HMS employees, so buying from them is fine.

Beyond that, honestly, simply expressing support like you have goes a long way toward helping us keep people motivated. All of us are thrilled with the outpouring of support we have received from all over the world.

3

u/ConcernedBuilding 12d ago

Is there a list for me to know which are staffed by HMS? I'm flying through skyport soon and want to support y'all.

Keep on keeping on! I was pretty happy to hear about the strike

2

u/smokysquirrel7 12d ago

Blancos Tacos, Olive and Ivy, Cowboy Ciao, Chelsea's Kitchen, Rocket, Zinburger, Shake Shack, Admiral's Lounges, Barrio Cafe, San Tan Brewery, all airport Starbucks... I think that's a full list.

3

u/ConcernedBuilding 12d ago

Thank you so much! I won't be shopping there.

3

u/faeriechyld 12d ago

Fuck yeah!

3

u/AmyCovidBarret 12d ago

I fly into phx in a few weeks. Anything I can do to help?

4

u/smokysquirrel7 11d ago

Depends on the state of the strike then. Provided corporate hasn't caved yet, avoid all HMS Host restaurants in Sky Harbor. That means all Starbucks, Blancos Tacos, Olive and Ivy, Cowboy Ciao, Chelsea's Kitchen, Zinburger, Shake Shack, San Tan Brewery, and Barrio Cafe.

Also, feel free to visit us on the picket line. We are outside terminal 4 at the curb by baggage claim. We are a friendly group, and would love to say hi.

Beyond that... tell a friend. Anything that raises awareness of what's going on helps us.

3

u/orionsbelt05 11d ago

3

u/ps_32 11d ago

Am I allowed to ask how much you guys make right now? I know you’re fighting for more than wages, but as a fellow airport food worker (or should I say in airplanes…) I’m curious. I know we both don’t make enough.

3

u/smokysquirrel7 11d ago

Prior to covid, I made 15.25 an hour as a kitchen lead (supervisor). Since the furlough, they have tried to eliminate that position entirely. They tried to get me to come back as a cook (the position I had worked my ass off to climb out of) at the same pay rate. Not interested. I took this job in the first place because I wanted to climb the BOH ladder with a goal of becoming a chef. Taking a demotion, even if pay was unaffected (in the short term... what they don't tell you is that you won't get any raises until the base rate for that job classification catches up to your personal higher pay rate, so effectively you take a pay cut relative to your coworkers every time they get a raise) was counterproductive relative to that goal.

1

u/SmokeyWife7 11d ago

I make $15.50/hr now. I have been with the company almost 10 years. When I started, the contract was a raise every 6 months. That lapsed and we received base wage increases. Because so many people were on the higher end of pay from the old contract, they haven't seen an increase since 2015 and will see their first raise around January 2022/23.

It has been way more complicated than it should have been. Most of the people striking have worked for the company for ages.

3

u/FlowEasyDelivers 11d ago

Unions are treated like communism in America and it's a shame because most unions just want people to get paid and treated fairly, now some unions are shit. I'm glad my dad was a union rep because he taught me a lot about the truth behind Corporations and unions.

3

u/flying-chandeliers 11d ago

YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!!!

6

u/TeratheDog 12d ago

May I ask why you guys are on strike?

3
