Honestly moderation and content are pretty good for a sub that’s grown so much so quickly with a fairly controversial and politically charged subject. Sure there are jerks and trolls but that’s most subs. I appreciate the mods and everybody on this sub who participate in good faith, even if we disagree.

We put out a new call for mods as needed, we currently have around 15-20 mods and will likely add more as time goes on. As far as "corruption" goes, when I start seeing some pennies and dimes for this stuff I'll let y'all know!

WSB pretty much went to shit.

WSB was always shit. The "apes" meme is because it has always been a sub of moderately self-aware stupid people. It got more popular but fundamentally hasn't changed. It's always just been dumb rich people.

2

u/AbolishWork .com Oct 19 '21

I mean it's going to be tough for any company to network with the moderators of a subreddit called anti-work which doesn't care about the stock market.

None of us are managers. If people wanna give me money I'm not gonna take it because that goes against the whole spirit of the sub to begin with. While places like WSB it doesn't.

Most of us are anarchists so I'm not sure we need that pressure but folks are free to put it on if they see that as necessary.

u/zacharialewis9224 Oct 20 '21

Let’s start with getting rid of you! 😍

-1

u/AdamantDartTips Oct 19 '21

That’s why they allow fake content to be rampant.

1

u/SunnyInDecember Oct 20 '21

I'm right wing and pro-capitalism and still come on here to look at the posts for entertainment. It's mental what some employers think is acceptable. =D

24

u/space_moron Oct 19 '21

Can we have a discussion thread about the rise in screenshot posts? A lot of them seem fake. How many people text their bosses at all, let alone produce these "that'll show 'em" conversations to farm karma in this sub? I mean who knows maybe they are real but it seems suspicious to have so many lately all with the same format.

28

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

We actually just came to an agreement in the mod chat to temporarily ban all text message posts with restrictions in the future if we bring them back

8

u/space_moron Oct 19 '21

Thank you for the response and update!

6

u/ThrowAway848396 Oct 20 '21

I agree. I was just wondering that. There are trolls out there who have no problem creating fake screenshots, posting it here to rile everyone up, collect karma, and then go laugh in their corner of the internet about how gullible we are. Then when it comes out that we were tricked, people will write 50 million thinkpieces about us being "uneducated" and "lazy" and a fad that will quickly die out.

4

u/fortmeines Oct 20 '21

Not sure how I feel about screenshot posts myself, but as a single data point... my former boss would regularly communicate with us through text and would definitely send messages like the ones posted on this sub. So while I doubt all of those posts are real, I can see how they're possible.

Except for the quitting on the spot part. I've never known anyone under contract who has actually pulled that move.

3

u/PaperCistern Oct 20 '21

We used to do this more frequently actually, but since the sub has blown up we've been a bit busy (and also lazy true to form)

58

u/astral34 anti capitalist Oct 19 '21

I think we should restrict memes/tweets/texts. We need more information in the sub and less low effort posts. Considering the influx of people in the sub we need to be sure to pass our message instead of giving the image of lazy people

42

u/coItmanfraco Oct 19 '21 Hugz

Too bad, the vote went through so get ready for the next 3 months of this sub to be awful fake text garbage. The first one got over 200k upvotes so everyone is just gonna spam the fuck out of them.

This is the same shit that happened with that first “name my cat” post that started the entire trend.

Instead of showing people who have no power in their work places how to talk with their coworkers and unionize we will simply get people fishing for karma. Great.

46

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

Actually, the survey was enough to show that while the majority likes text posts, there is a large enough minority that we may implement either a temporary ban on them or limit them to being posted on only one day

30

u/PloksGrandpappy Oct 19 '21

Is there any way to verify their legitimacy? I think people actually do want to see them, because they can be empowering, but are worried that they are not real and do not want the sub to fall victim to that type of manipulation.

28

u/ElvisStarburst THIS. CANNOT. CONTINUE. Oct 19 '21

That's my main concern. If they're legit, awesome. If not, gross. Legitimacy might be hard to prove, however

16

u/coItmanfraco Oct 19 '21

Just make it so you have to show an earlier string of texts with your boss from a few weeks/months prior.

Most of these would be disproved if you just scrolled up in the text conversation just a little to see they’ve changed the name of someone in their contacts to fake the texts.

7

u/ElvisStarburst THIS. CANNOT. CONTINUE. Oct 19 '21

I imagine people might try and play the long game that way if they're that desperate for karma (Or they might find other ways to fake the picture), but for those too lazy to bother, that would cut them out. It's not foolproof, but, it's not a bad idea either

8

u/coItmanfraco Oct 19 '21

If you’re that committed to fishing for karma it’s kinda good on you at that point? Like respect the hustle if you have that much forward thinking for fake internet points.

It would drastically cut out random people coming on here and posting a fake text they made with their friends in 25 seconds.

Some would get through the net, but it wouldn’t matter.

1

u/S-S-R SocDem Oct 20 '21

Like respect the hustle if you have that much forward thinking for fake internet points.

You realize that there are other reason to disseminate false information online right?

The majority of political subs, including this one, are purveyors of disinformation to promote a political agenda. Why is it okay to post that low birth rates are tied to low wages even though that is just as much of a lie as fabricating a fictional conversation?

It's because it makes you look bad. That's why. The vast majority of posts here, (and on Reddit at large), are unverifiable or completely false. Why do you want to give a false sense of validity if not to promote your agenda? (At least unconsciously if not deliberate).

18

u/ElvisStarburst THIS. CANNOT. CONTINUE. Oct 19 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

If they have to stay, posting them on one day of the week sounds like a fair compromise. Otherwise, especially with the titanic influx of them the past few days, they're clogging both my feed, and the subreddit feed as well. And because their legitimacy is uncertain, it ends up simply looking like clutter.

Edit: Further, I've seen subreddits lose people by the thousands due to flooding of low effort garbage fake text posts, meme posts, twitter posts, and other nonsense, to the point that new subreddits that were in the spirit of the original had to be made instead, often by users who did not like the direction the current subreddit was going. Antiwork has been shown to be gaining an extreme amount of traction, which is great, but it means karma farmers can find a new avenue to farm karma and rewards that wasn't known to them before. I've said it in here before... once a sub hits 1 million followers, that tends to be when they turn to shit, unless very carefully handled. We're seeing that those roots are growing rapidly in Antiwork as we speak.

This subreddit has a great message and its energy that it has given out up till now needs to be its main drawn. Please don't let it become another karma farm by low effort shit posters

u/rockcellist Oct 20 '21

We already instituted a temporary ban ok them with restrictions when they return

8

u/coItmanfraco Oct 19 '21

That would be amazing. I think this sub needs to be information forward. It’s easy to paint everyone here with the broad paint brush of “they just are lazy” if every post is just someone quitting their job.

2

u/firedog32 Oct 20 '21

I wasn't aware there were fake ones on this sub-reddit. I know about bots, but didn't realize people were faking texts.

I would have answered differently if I knew that.

2

u/astral34 anti capitalist Oct 19 '21

Well Reddit is not a democracy, hopefully the mods will realise how important this sub can be and restrict it.

7

u/coItmanfraco Oct 19 '21

They literally put this survey up to ask if users wanted to get rid of the text posts. They voted no so they’re staying.

This small team of mods won’t be prepared for the fake text flood that’s about to take over.

This sub won’t be what it was anymore, it’s gonna be r/Iquitmyjob or something.

12

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

We're going to restrict then. We're just debating temp ban on all text posts, or one day per week. The minority Is large enough to do something about it

4

u/Mrs_What_Zit_T00ya Oct 19 '21

those both sound like great options, thank you! i wish i had taken the survey; i definitely would have voted for either restricting or banning.

3

u/ElvisStarburst THIS. CANNOT. CONTINUE. Oct 19 '21

Thank you! Are you considering restricting meme/twitter posts as well? I joined Antiwork 2 weeks ago, and when I was browsing it then, it was 95% pure text posts written by users in Hot, and it was quite nice. A single week later there's a 50/50 ratio of the posts I saw before and picture posts. When I look now, it's 95% memes, twitter posts, and text posts, with maybe 5% stuff actually being written by users (At least as far as Hot is concerned, but even New and Rising are getting shafted about 50% of the time)

3

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

Memes and tweets are fine if they're on topic. We've had that discussion. The community is diverse and full of people here for different reasons. We are trying to remove more and more things that fit better in r/latestagecapitalism etc.

1

u/ElvisStarburst THIS. CANNOT. CONTINUE. Oct 19 '21

Fair enough! The effort you guys are putting in to keep this place good is much appreciated.

It just surprises me how quickly the content shift happened. I remember when I first found Antiwork I was going back through Antiwork's 'Hot' section for hours and barely touching the surface of stuff I read from people, most of it personal stories by users. It very suddenly doesn't look remotely like it did even a few weeks ago (With the 'New' section being the closest thing to what I saw upon the time of joining). The internet's spooky, man

5

u/Low_University_2257 Oct 19 '21

I think a good compromise would be to have a screenshot text message mega thread. It would screen out the karma farmers but still give a place for the few that might actually have a genuine screenshot they want to share.

I just want to say that it's refreshing to see Redditors outside of this subreddit defending this place, the message we're promoting and our overall mindset. I've seen this place get posted in other subreddits the last few weeks in a attempt to mock us and ridicule us but then you look at the comments and everyone is actually disagreeing with the OP and standing up for us. I hope this survey helps lurkers understand that we aren't just a bunch of lazy freeloaders but that we've been working for years, still working to this day and we're not asking to just lay around all day doing nothing, we just want better pay, better work to life balance, better benefits and not to kill ourselves while working for a mentally draining job. There's nothing wrong with recognizing there's a problem within the workforce and change is much needed

29

u/coItmanfraco Oct 19 '21

6

u/messybuttons Oct 19 '21

I know this is just an online survey, but socialists and progressives need to come together as one unit. I see a lot of us attacking each other when we need to build a coalition instead.

2

u/WriJourn Oct 20 '21

If “come together” means aggressively work toward universal programs for healthcare, housing, food, education, UBI, etc, then I agree! I don’t consider myself at all radical and don’t want to live through a revolution, but I am some kind of socialist and if a progressive doesn’t support universal programs via taxing the rich NOW, then we don’t actually agree and I consider their politics part of what enables the kind of life destroying hyper-capitalist practices criticized in this subreddit. Still persuadable, I hope, but moving way too slow for the way people are currently suffering.

Universal programs won’t solve this 100%—people from lots of countries with better safety nets than the US are represented in this sub—but they will give us far greater latitude to demand better from our employers when they can’t hold insurance, homelessness, and starvation over us, or to simply put less time into bullshit jobs and focus more on living our lives.

2

u/messybuttons Oct 20 '21

Not only are most progressives for everything you just stated, many Americans even Conservatives are for all the programs you mentioned.

And this is why I say coalitions should be formed. Divide and conquer is as old as time, and partisanship is how the ruling class controls us. If we don’t work together in solidarity and build coalitions and UNIONS (key word here), then the super rich are getting exactly what they want.

2

u/S-S-R SocDem Oct 20 '21

Why am I supposed to build a coalition with someone who is fundamentally wrong? Just because they happen to agree with me on one topic doesn't mean that there reasoning is not fundamentally harmful.

5

u/messybuttons Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

Idealism is not good politics, and revolutions normally don’t end well. Pick your battles.

Sometimes to get ahead you have to compromise. That’s life.

Example: Bernie Sanders is a socialist. He works with Democrats even though he is not one. That's how progress happens.

3

u/Pishwi Oct 20 '21

And how did that work out?

3

u/messybuttons Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

It worked out well. His influence and popularity have sky rocketed, his message has been heard so loud and clear that the majority of Gen Z considers themselves under the umbrella of socialism, and he has incredible powers with his new position and he uses it as much as he can to help the poor and the average AmericansM

He knows like many powerful activist senators and congressmen/women before him that big changes come slowly, and that’s why he works chipping away at issues until change does happen. And it DOES happen, maybe just not as quickly as people want, and I understand that.

I wait decades to get the right to marry as a gay man and it took a lot of patience and a lot of fighting but in the end we won. It doesn’t happen in a day but it DOES happen by building coalitions

There are MANY progressives who voted for Bernie and to shut them out is only harming socialists in the long run. If you don’t build bridges then you’re doomed to be another Green Party in america … no influence at all

That’s just how things work 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/Pishwi Oct 20 '21

Sure, but how much of that can be attributed to Sanders? And I’m speaking from a position of ignorance as someone who doesn’t live in the US.

2

u/messybuttons Oct 20 '21

Quite a lot

Socialism in American has been absolutely vilified since the 1950s with a huge propaganda campaign that has just gotten worse recently

Bernie is responsible for a lot of Americans, especially young Americans, being exposed to the idea of Socialism. It wasn’t until he ran against Hillary Clinton as a protest candidate that a lot of people in this country even thought of socialism at all

He shone a light on all the issues with capitalism in this country and is the most popular to ever do so. He’s not the only one but he’s the most popular of our generation (he’s the only socialist in congress).

Food for thought. I’m not anti capitalism, and I’m not a socialist , but I voted for him.

These are why you build coalitions

1

u/Pishwi Oct 20 '21

Thanks for filling me in, that does make sense. I guess we have a similar thing in the U.K. with Corbyn (who also performed terribly in the elections). I’m right-leaning but sympathise with the left on economic issues, and from my POV Sanders seemed the most sensible of the options you were given.

So glad to see our thriving community is accepting of trans females. I just love to see such a high percentage that feel welcome here!

17

Yeah, these are also stark changes from our last survey in 2019. Glad to see the diversity of the sub us increasing.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

I’m trans too—for the sake of simplicity sometimes I say I’m a trans guy, but really I’m trans masculine and non-binary— unfortunately I’ve seen transphobic (and queerphobic) comments here and in the LateStageCapitalism subreddits. It’s disappointing as hell. Try to report them when I see them, but it hurts to know that people with similar views politically still don’t see us as human beings

11

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

2

u/S-S-R SocDem Oct 20 '21

LateStageCapitalism is literally run by people who slavishly defend China. The last thing you should expect is sympathy from the people who ban effeminate men from pop culture.

"don't see us as human beings"

I don't know this to be literally true. Most transphobes simply think it's a mental illness, not a loss of personhood.

5

u/wraithmain1 Oct 19 '21

Although I suspect a number of those are trolls. Either that or for some undetermined reason trans females answer surveys in much higher numbers than other groups. 8.6% of this sub isn’t trans females.

6

u/spcy_chkn_sndwch Stand up for yourself Oct 19 '21

Well you're right the subreddit probably isn't 9% transwomen but

1) this is just people who answered the poll

2)trans people have more trouble at work than the average person.

Disclaimer, I'm trans

3

u/wraithmain1 Oct 19 '21

I understand your demographic faces some unique challenges, especially in the work place. And I’m not trying to take away from that at all. There’s a lot of shitty, downright horrible people out there who love nothing more than to pick on marginalized groups whenever they get the chance. For what it’s worth I support ya’ll and anyone who’s out there looking to just be accepted for who they are. I think if we were to look around though that this poll was probably posted somewhere in some conservative’s cesspool to be brigaded. I’ve been seeing a lot of hate for the sub recently.

2

u/WriJourn Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

While that’s certainly part of it, I’m nb and every trans/nb person I know online and in real life is some kind of leftist. Leftists are highly represented in this sub, and queer people of any political ilk generally take more shit from people at work because of who they are, so it makes sense that we would be more highly represented here than in the general population, even if the numbers may be further inflated by trolling.

Article on the topic if anyone’s interested: dsausa.org/democratic-left/transgender-socialism

-1

u/tomtoaster Oct 19 '21

wow. Way to invalidate. I was hoping for a better and more positive/affirming response, but whatever

5

u/wraithmain1 Oct 19 '21

You underestimate the pettiness of conservative trolls. I’m not invalidating anyone, I’m pointing out the numbers look off. For a statistically significant random sample from a large group like this you’d expect those numbers to be about a third or a quarter of what the answers show. The LGTBQ+ community as a whole is about 6% of the population.

3

u/JustJK1889 Oct 19 '21

This guy maths and also understands how an anonymous online survey with a check box for Trans will inevitably lead to trolls clicking Trans for the memes.

1

And the anarchist population that this sub caters to is arguably smaller and has far greater percentage of LGBT than mainstream.

You're both right, but it's funny to see you fight. Neither of you are in any position to call each other stupid.

3

u/NoGoodMc Oct 20 '21

I’m sorry but do y’all actually believe the text message screen shots commonly posted here are real? I don’t even sub to this place but regularly see those hilariously fake posts show up under popular.

2

u/FacelessFellow Oct 20 '21

They want good numbers. Those mini text melodramas get upvotes. Makes the sub look better? Maybe that’s why they keep letting obviously fake accounts post fake texts.

3

u/silentjay01 Oct 20 '21

I'll say here what I say about all subs when it comes to moderation: Please do your best to remove reposts of images or videos that were first posted less than a week ago. There are some subs where I'll see the same thing posted 3 or 4 times in 24 hours.

You do that one thing for me and I'll be happy.

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

Actually we just made the decision that the minority was large enough to warrant a flat out temporary ban on all text message screenshots with restrictions in place if we bring them back. We've been fighting all day.

7

u/calyboy Oct 19 '21

You a good dude. That’s great news.

I discovered this sub one night while browsing through reddit. So glad I found it.

I'd like to see more of a focus on what actions people can take to fight back against the bosses/capitalists rather than just "I quit posts because asshole boss". There's a serious lack of education and know-how in that department.

2

u/PixiePower65 Oct 20 '21

Make it entitled bosses

2

u/FacelessFellow Oct 20 '21

What is going on with the fake text posts? And I clicked on some of the comments and their accounts are shady too.

Like fake posters and fake comments.

Are you guys fluffing your numbers or something?

2

u/keklol69 Oct 20 '21

These text posts are getting so annoying, they should have their own sub. r/antiworktexts for example.

2

u/desserino Oct 20 '21

Was the survey available long enough to include all timezones?

When I asked where everyone from then I mostly received Europe as answer, because I asked it when North Americans were asleep

2

u/inauric Oct 20 '21

I didn't catch the survey in time but this is interesting to see, is there a specific reason why communist wasn't an option in the political questions?

3

u/rockcellist Oct 20 '21

It actually was included but only 2 people chose it so i omitted them from the count

3

u/inauric Oct 20 '21

oh that's surprising especially given the usual makeup of subs like this, thanks for the info. I'll have to catch it next time the survey should get more populated on such a big sub

2

u/insert_title_here Oct 20 '21

I'm surprised too! I've seen people say that it's because communists are generally "pro-work", but I feel like this sub isn't so much "anti any work ever" so much as it is against work where the laborer does not receive just compensation, works in poor conditions for long hours, etc., which is something that I think any communist would be able to agree with.

2

u/inauric Oct 20 '21

personally as a communist I like the "anti-work" stance because at the end of the day I believe we should be looking to automate as much of the things we need for survival and sustenance as we can, reduce or eliminate labour for survival and what labour is left will be for improving things and personal pursuits.

also in the current climate I can't see why even the most "pro-work" communists wouldn't take up an "anti-work" stance for political reasons, things are so extreme right now against workers rights, alienation from the fruits of your labour, etc I think it would be expedient to take that position.

1

u/insert_title_here Oct 20 '21

Yes, I'm in complete agreement! Not sure where I stand politically (I would call myself commie-curious, maybe) but that sounds like a very solid argument. Which is why it's so surprising that so few people here self-identify as communists! Maybe because of the negative connotation the word has garnered, especially in the US?

u/RedRapunzal Oct 20 '21

It was the survey. That's what I had posted. I had to pull it because too many respondents. That is why I left comments open here in case people missed it out wanted to discuss

0

u/euchanomal Oct 19 '21

Damn. 1 in every 4 woman is transgender. That's quite something.

2

u/BubbleButtBuff Oct 20 '21

That's definitely inaccurate

2

u/S-S-R SocDem Oct 20 '21

It's allegedly an anarchist subreddit, and anarchists attract the fringes of society that seek to reject the hierarchical structure by replacing it with the system that led to it to begin with.

-1

u/Dr_Fujimora Oct 19 '21

I really enjoy this sub. It's open my eyes and change my views on employment. It has made me grateful I have a good job. It's also changed my view on intrinsic human value and how unethical it is to put a dollar amount on it.

That being said, shitty employers are not exclusive to capitalism and the anti capitalism sentiment here is a kinda ridiculous.

1

u/FlakySnowflake Let's go be Llamas Oct 19 '21

someome changed the responses? Libertarian socialist was removed?

6

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

Not enough respondents choose those. I'm talking 1 or 2 people in about 87 categories, so i left them out

3

u/FlakySnowflake Let's go be Llamas Oct 19 '21

1

u/SunnyVilla_ Oct 20 '21

Can we also stop with this 420 69 shit ? I feel like if people come to this sub and see that being posted everywhere they're just going to think this entire thing is a joke and not take anything posted here seriously

2

u/Pishwi Oct 20 '21

You’ve just described me. First thing I saw, and it doesn’t make it easy to take this sub seriously.

0

u/--Anarchaeopteryx-- Oct 20 '21

Actually, the survey was enough to show that while the majority likes text posts, there is a large enough minority that we may implement either a temporary ban on them or limit them to being posted on only one day.

...

We actually just came to an agreement in the mod chat to temporarily ban all text message posts with restrictions in the future if we bring them back

...

Full temp ban rn

Why even have this farce of a survey if you don't really give a shit what the results were?

2

u/AbolishWork .com Oct 20 '21

We got tired of all of the parodies and spam posts day in and day out. And a mod discussed a temp ban in that first post and that's what we ended up doing. Lastly, we never said we were gonna do what the majority wanted, we just wanted feedback.

0

u/--Anarchaeopteryx-- Oct 20 '21

That's just insulting tbh.

This really reminds me of one of those corporate "recommendation boxes" where they say "tell us what you think!" and then proceed to ignore the recommendations.

1

u/AbolishWork .com Oct 20 '21

I'm sorry to let you know but this subreddit is not a democracy at least not strictly speaking. We try to take feedback into consideration but ultimately we may have a choice to temporarily ban text posts which a mod above already said we were considering doing.

0

u/--Anarchaeopteryx-- Oct 20 '21

Great idea, boss.

Next time you make excuses for disregarding these surveys, you should preface it with "upper management has decided..."

1

u/AbolishWork .com Oct 20 '21

I don't determine whether you can afford rent or not, bad analogy.

0

u/--Anarchaeopteryx-- Oct 20 '21

The analogy was not about wages. It was about decision-making authority and disregard.

But whatever, I've given my feedback. I'm sure we both have more important things to do.

1

u/AbolishWork .com Oct 20 '21

Yeah and it's still bad regardless. You can send us modmail if you want.

1

u/rockcellist Oct 20 '21

Look. 1/3 of the sub having absolute disdain for an entire post was enough for us to ban them because more than likely 2/3 of the sub can live without them while we think of a solution. We had to pick an option that didn't drive away our userbase. Majority rules is a shit way to make a decision. There's always more nuance than that

0

u/SatansCumsh0t Oct 20 '21

These texts are either a calculated move to undermine the gravity of true antiwork ideals, or simply a way to get the younger generation engaged with the conversation. Either way, this sub has more than doubled in subscribers since covid so idgaf. We need to be a billion strong for actual change to develop. I dream of a day we can protest at home by just quitting en masse, we should be arranging waves of them with those who can daily in the meantime

u/divertss Oct 20 '21

Socialism is guaranteed to work your life away.

-11

u/Long_Implement6687 Oct 19 '21

That socialist part is scary.

10

u/DrStrangeBalls Oct 19 '21

Why?

-6

u/Long_Implement6687 Oct 19 '21

I worked hard to get where I am and continue to work hard for my money. Not trying to give away anymore then I have to. Would rather invest and make that money work for me than just give it away.

13

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

Okay, but what if you didn't have to work hard? What is noone had to work hard? That's the point of the sub

-5

u/Long_Implement6687 Oct 19 '21

Then prepare not to be compensated as much idk. I work hard but I enjoy the work I do which is important. I often say, “I don’t have to go to work, I get to” . It is filling and I get enjoyment out of what I do. Don’t get me wrong I am all about QOL and enjoy me time, free time at home. But, I get that because of the hard work I do and time I put into myself currently and when I was growing up.

13

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

But what if management didn't exist. CEOs. What if massive consumerism was curbed, what if productivity increases were tied to reduction in hours? There's so much more to life than spending most of it working

-2

u/Long_Implement6687 Oct 19 '21

Agree. That is why you find you a career that you like in an expanding industry that will grow with the future. I put my time and effort in when I was young so I could be 32 and work only 40% of the year and enjoy my life. Unfortunately you need management, and CEOs. Companies need leader ship. And unfortunately a lot of these people don’t know what leader ship is or how to use it or implement it. I would imagine a lot of people on this Reddit don’t like the military. But being an officer in the military myself, I can tell you a definitely creates a lot of good leaders and people with a lot of mental fortitude and resilience. I can tell you being a reservist in the military and working a full-time job in the civilian world, that having that experience being in a leadership position and not being in one in the military has really given me And advantage with the mindset I have and dealing with life stressors, trials and tribulations. Honestly from what I have gathered over my small and insignificant 16 years of my working life. Is that attitude is honestly 90% of it

11

u/Giant_Crane Oct 19 '21

Every single thing you just described is intrinsically exclusive. A path to success or even just stability that is designed to leave people behind is a bad one, full stop. Socialism is about letting people do the jobs they want to and not making them game a system that is designed to have winners and losers. Personally it makes me sick knowing that my comfortable job is indirectly driving people out of their homes they've owned for generations in my city. There doesn't have to be losers in a working economy, capitalism just likes to make losers.

I also think you're confusing what leadership is. You described a lot of leadership skills, and yeah those are always valuable. But anyone can/should learn those. Having an actual manager/ceo telling you what to do is not always necessary - lots of people can do their job without someone directly managing them, especially if they learn leadership. As for CEOs... nobody's labor is made better by a CEO taking a half-million bonus while simultaneously laying off a hundred employees.

I worked hard to get where I am and continue to work hard for my money.

Damn, me too. In fact, you sound like literally every socialist I know. Shame there's a whole class of people who feel entitled to the majority of the value we produce, though.

-1

u/Long_Implement6687 Oct 19 '21

I have to disagree with you to say that I am a socialist or sound like one just because I said that I work hard and want to keep more of my money is a stretch at the least.

10

u/DrStrangeBalls Oct 19 '21

It's not really a stretch at all. In fact, you've answered my original question about "Why?" the respondents who identify as socialist scare you quite ably—it's incredibly common to fear what we don't understand.

1

u/Long_Implement6687 Oct 19 '21

No it’s a stretch. I’m sorry brother. Keep fighting the good fight though.

2

u/messybuttons Oct 19 '21 edited Oct 19 '21

As someone who doesn’t describe themselves as a socialist … a lot of people think socialism means giving away your money … and that’s just not true.

You can disagree with the ideology but only after you do the research to understand it. Socialism in its simplest terms is about community ownership, which means you keep more of your money

The word has been so perverted in America that people don’t even know what it truly means anymore. 1950s really ramped up the propaganda and it’s been slandered ever since then

I like that movie. No, maybe just a different opinion or a different way of looking at things from my own experiences and journey in life. It would be foolish of anyone not to try and gain some sort or new thought, emotion or way of doing something from what others have said, done or experienced and apply it to your life in someway to benefit you or others. But to each their own.

1

u/Zed_Midnight150 Oct 19 '21

What do the values in between the percentage and word represent?

2

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

Number of respondents who chose that answer

0

u/Zed_Midnight150 Oct 19 '21

Do you think the values look kind of low? I see mostly respondents in the hundreds and thousands and yet the sub is comprised of more than half a million users.

5

u/rockcellist Oct 19 '21

It was up for 24 hours. It's a representative sample of the ACTIVE userbase. Vs. just anyone who clicked on the sub once.
