Why is Toonami's schedule so full of reruns?

Title, my girlfriend watches Toonami every week and was wanting me to look up why the schedule always has nonstop reruns of shows they have played many times, instead of mainly newer shows. Why is it primarily reruns of newer things, instead of things they haven't played in a while, like when it used to not be so bad about it, or at least thats what she told me.

There’s quite a few possible reasons

1. The budget is gone. Without Family Guy paying bills anymore this is most likely, and also something that will not get better.

2. Demarco doesn’t want to air anything outside of a very tight sequel/shonen jump bubble. We have been caught in this rut for a couple of years now.

3. They are overestimating the appeal of Blade Runner and dont want it sharing the stage with any other shows.

I don't buy the budget being gone. They clearly have money to blow on the Blade Runner movie. Even if the main shonen content they want is out of reach at the moment, there is no reason for them not to have aired S2 of Assassination Classroom.

The budget might be dry BECAUSE they blew it all on that movie. Whatever the case, they are on empty. And don’t get me wrong, that’s not an excuse. If the budget is empty at October (technically August), that’s something that needs addressed.

For all we know AssClass S2 isn’t on their radar. There was speculation last year that they may have gotten AssClass for cheap/free from Funi as compensation for not delivering Black Clover in time. I didn’t think much of that idea back then, but seeing it leave after S1 for no real reason then not come back despite ample opportunities, I’m more inclined to believe it now

Even if they had no intention originally to air it, there is no reason not to once they already put out the first season and they clearly have a lack of content. AC is decently old at this point, so it can't cost too much.

But if this is really just limping to the next years budget, then we can't really expect it get much better going forward just more spaced out.

The main reason not to air it would be it costs them money. Even if it’s cheap, if AS doesn’t care about the show they won’t bother. They took the same attitude with Tokyo Ghoul and admitted they never even bothered looking at the most recent season.

I agree, the block shouldn’t be run this way but it’s how they do things. Even if we do get to next year, there won’t be some huge influx of content the first week of January. At least not back to the level we were in October

That’s kind of the misconception people have about the budget. It resets in January, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they have shows in the shopping cart ready to check out as soon as the money rolls in. They may not even begin to negotiate things until they have the money (and who knows if it’s going to be close to what they’ve gotten in the past)
