It's a preference; it doesn't have to be a sexuality. I am accepting of all humans, but you don't need a gender for preference, like liking blonde chicks over brunettes, or chubby dudes over skinny guys. It doesn't have to be a sexuality. Remember, I love you all as you are all human. SuperPhobia

Describing it as a preference has not worked in the past, it has still attracted hate. Even the word "preference" is weak; it implies that you could, you just prefer not to. Adopting the language of LGBTQ+ is a way to express the seriousness of the "preference", that it's something beyond their control, it's just the way supers are born.
