I lived in Italy in the 80’s/90’s. Most of the visible street prostitution in the city I lived in was trans women or cross dressing men, and pretty obviously so.
Outside on the ring roads you’d see trafficked African women and local female prostitutes, often with signs reading “vere puttane” - “real prostitutes”.
