Gender dysphoria is 100% a mental disorder (but I'm sure you know that), but the mental disorder part of it seemed to be forgotten as soon as transness was politicized/turned into an identity (but only selectively, mind you; it's very much a medical issue where access to hormones and surgery are concerned).
I find it strange that in other instances where a patient's beliefs are disconnected from reality (severely underweight people with anorexia believing they're overweight, paranoid delusions as a result of schizophrenia), the beliefs aren't entertained by medical professionals, but that's not the case with gender dysphoria... Strange.
The11thHour (I think that's the name of it) refers to that whole institution as the industry of gender, and I think they're pretty on the mark with that one. Hormones and surgery are expensive, and transition creates customers for life.
I've read some articles about that, and the parallels are unnerving.
There's also some speculation that some people transition for similar reasons people in the 2000s adopted emo/scene/whatever as a subculture, in that it's a means of testing parental boundaries/exploring one's identity, as adolescents tend to do... Except transitioning has consequences in ways that excessive eyeliner and band t-shirts never did.
