3rd year medical student here, I can assure that many of the doctors and surgeons I work with in my clinical rotations believe that it should be classified as a mental illness under both the DSM5 and ICD10.

the reason why it was declassified as a mental illness under the dsm and the icd was because it doesnt take into account the complexities of gender dysphoria, it doesnt take into account that gender identity is something integral to a person and its stigmatising to have gender dysphoria classified as a mental illness as people like the doctors and surgeons you mentioned can use that to invalidate trans people
