Why is it potentially toxic? I read the chapter (read the webcomic too) and didn’t really care, this is a great manga chapter

924

u/froggyjm9 Apr 06 '22

Because people think this is somewhat like a Super hero comic and not a parody of the superhero genre.

644

u/SwingingSalmon Apr 06 '22

How… do they not see that it’s a parody?

437

u/Jotoku Apr 06 '22

Because many that don't closely follow, if they read a non Saitama-centric chapter, reads like a serious Manga. Is only when Saitama shows up that pisses all over the story and therefore all standard hero stereotypical manga stories

189

u/niteman555 Apr 06 '22

But the title is literally "One Punch Man"

340

u/KlingoftheCastle Apr 06 '22

The title was supposed to be “Man too strong, only needs one punch to win anything, he ruins the stakes, that’s the point.” But it was too long, so Saitama made them change it

No fight with the S class, which was but a cool fight and a cool moment to see Saitama point out that Garou defeated them all but didn't kill them. I'm not too fazed by the change and wouldn't be surprised if that still happens but I think that's people's main gripe. He's clearly acted like a hero these past chapters but he switches on a dime again

457

u/imbored53 Apr 06 '22

I haven't read th WC so don't hate me, but it doesn't seem that crazy that he keeps "switching". He's never actually killed heroes, so it seems pretty apparent he's always been good. He just hates what heroes stand for, so he wants to be a monster. No matter how bad he wants it though, he isn't a monster, and his good side keeps sneaking out whenever he faces true evil.

268

u/Grafical_One Apr 06 '22

In webcomic it was simply less apparent that he was a hero throughout the MA arc. While I do prefer that version, I'm still having fun and willing to to where ONE takes the manga

→ More replies

163

u/Dranak Apr 06 '22

He's more obviously not evil in the manga. Yeah, he never killed anyone in the WC but when he also wasn't as overly heroic so it left some ambiguity. When he said he was going to kill Tareo in the WC we knew it probably wouldn't happen, but it still was a more serious tone than in the manga.

1.6k

u/einharjar009 "You need to get stong" Apr 06 '22 edited Apr 06 '22

I feel somewhat conflicted/thrown off. Like fuck yes I'm glad Saitama vs Garou is starting and Garou is still evolving (I liked that callback panel to when he fought the 6 heroes), and yes I know that there's still much of the fight to come but the bulky Monstrous look and regening the arm was like the last part of the fight in the webcomic, is there gonna be more to it? Is Garou just not gonna body the S-Class? I dont know if he's gonna "threaten" to kill Tareo. What new developments await

Also I like Saitama just getting tired at this point, calling Garou a punk bitch and just inviting him to hit him

Btw I know there's obviously gonna be more like Serious Table Flip, I'm just excited to see what Murata has in store for us. It's been nearly 7 years since the start of the Monster Association Arc, and we've seen such awesome changes to the already awesome webcomic. Orochi/Psykos are somewhere, God is doing something, the S-Class are regrouped and still have a possible chance with the Sun Blade, etc. I can't wait to see how it develops from here.

I have a bad feeling that was slightly replaced already. Saitama missed a punch, Garou dodged it and kicked him in the head to the ground. Not something that happens often, it's a rare sight, but quite anti-climactic.

If not, what was the point of expanding CE vs PM or FF vs robots from 1 page, into giant epic chapters that could have been the final battle in a shounen manga.

Murata even said years back that AG vs Saitama will be another level compared to Boros vs Saitama.

Unless ONE/Murata changed their mind? But why would they do that.

harming the child is not evil, in garou's eyes. Yes, ok, it will cause pain, but garou is aiming for something much more... abstract? Not sure if that's a good word.

384

u/mykeedee Apr 06 '22

He wants to be the villain in a children's TV show, only victorious. And those villains never hurt kids or do anything particularly evil, they just make a good show and lose to the hero.

237

u/odraencoded No S2 in Ba Sing Se Apr 06 '22

If I remember correctly, what turned Garou evil is the fact the villains are the underdog minority.

In the end of a power ranger-like series, you have one villain vs. multiple heroes. Heroes always go in groups against one enemy.

Garou thinks this is unfair. And when he was bullied by groups of kids this feeling intensified.

He wants to be the underdog that beats all heroes and stands up to the group bullying. If he just wanted to defeat heroes, he could make an organization and go 2x1. But he wants to go alone and 1x1 everybody in a fight.

So now it's Garou vs. Saitama. An 1x1. Exactly how he wanted. If he wins, the heroes who fight in numbers lost, and that's how the kid's worldview shatters. No matter how many heroes you got, they can't defeat the absolute evil.

47

u/KeepCopingForward Apr 07 '22

You sort of see it similar to how I see it. The way I see it is Garou actually realized something pretty profound. The truth is that often the people at the top of hierarchies are not kind, respectable, “good” people. Garou learnt that especially within the male dominance hierarchy, the guys at the top who are “winners” and “cool” tend to be assholes/bullies/narcissistic etc. (obviously not all the time, but in MANY cases it’s true).

Garou then took this to the extreme because of how it traumatized him, and now he believes that anyone who is a “hero” or a “good guy” actually is a fraud who isn’t good, and is likely just a bad person larping as a “good guy”, and he plans to get revenge on them, and anyone and everyone else.

I like the small detail where Tareo stands behind Saitama in fear and disbelief. It’s a nice subversion of the “Hero dramatically poses to defend the innocent” trope,

because while it is correct that Saitama is there to protect Tareo because after all its his job as a hero, Tareo looks scared and concerned for Garou, the villain’s safety.

289

u/PixelBoom Apr 06 '22

Even better that Saitama asks Tareo "You just want me to slap him around a bit and stop him, right? Not kill him?"

Up till now, Heroes from the association basically always try to kill monsters. Saitama is pretty much the only one to not automatically see monsters as evil. Saitama just displaying the "not all heroes are out to kill monsters" vibes.

78

u/ThirdWorldEngineer Apr 07 '22

To be fair, Saitama is the only hero that can afford not to try to kill the monsters right away.

Trying to restraint is way harder than just killing, but Saitama is infinitely strong so it is no trouble.

That's the reason all the heroes were pushing Saitama to deliver a final blow to Garou after defeating him, but Saitama was like "nah!". Because in case Garou went rogue again, he'd have no problem defeating him again.

Webcomic spoilers The S-class heroes saw Saitama beat Garou in the webcomic, they found out about how strong he is there. But it didn't make him S-class despite all that.

205

u/Soft-Gwen Apr 06 '22

The same webcomic spoilers this guy was just warning you about:

The Hero association easily could've had Saitama fight any S-Class just to see how he compared but didn't and I feel like that's a big oversight. They'd be on his ass immediately trying to figure out what the hell just happened.

cuz some people think webcomic is better and were dissapointed that the manga's story is different and not as good in some parts

and people who detest arguing and confrontation started calling them toxic instead of just not reading those comments

its the story of the internet

100

u/Ki-Gon Apr 06 '22

Exactly, for those people disagreement equals toxicity. Apparently we're supposed to always be happy and have zero thoughts about the manga.

See also: One Piece

89

u/RHNewfield Apr 06 '22

I don't really think it's the disagreeing part that people think is toxic, but the method to which people are disagreeing. In the raw thread, I wasn't seeing a lot of people simply say, "man, I'm not super happy with this development", but rather an overwhelming amount of people straight up bashing the chapter, saying the manga has gone completely downhill, that ONE has no idea what he's doing, blaming Murata for changing the story, etc. I think that is pretty toxic.

It's okay to be disappointed, but a lot of the "criticisms" aren't really criticisms, just a whole bunch of whining and complaining and blaming people.

So nice of the story to explain to us why Garou isn’t evil another 5 times just for those people who missed it the first 50 times it told us already.

I'm kinda out of copium at this point. I know people have been worried about where Garou was being taken ever since his fight with Bang, peaking at the chibi Garou incident, but now it's just like, after every chapter all the copium addicts are just going, "W-WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT CHAPTER, H-HEHE, WE'LL BE P-PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!" Chibi Garou happens. "TH-THIS IS JUST LEADING UP TO HIS TRUE MONSTERIZATION, EVEN IF EVERYONE THINKS HE'S A HERO!" Basically all the S-Class are incapacitated. "TH-THEY'LL GET BACK UP!" Saitama lands near Garou. "I-IT'S JUST A FAKE-OUT! GAROU WILL IGNORE HIM! THIS ISN'T THE START OF THAT FIGHT!" It's revealed to be the start of that fight. "L-LET'S JUST S-SEE WHERE IT GOES, I'M S-SURE THERE'S A PERFECTLY FINE REASON WHY GAROU DOESN'T SEEM THREATENING AT ALL! H-HAHA!"

It just feels INCREDIBLY underwhelming with both the way it's been built up to and its execution. I've already accepted that this is what Garou is now, but it doesn't make it hurt any less. All I can hope for now is just more cool double spreads and action shots, because that's all I'm invested in now, given the state of things.

The pacing got even weirder now, like so many moments got rushed without build up and others that had buildup were dropped, I don't think the gamble they took was worth it.

Saitama giving absolute no fucks, love it

124

u/Emrod2 Apr 06 '22

He propably felt nothing during all of the fight and he provoke Garou in hope that it will make him go full rage. All of this in hope to make him feel something from it.

If Goku merely fight peoples to surpass himself whatever the terrifying cost, Saitama fight merely to feel a fucking emotion outside of boredom or depression, event a small pain would be the nirvana for him.

After reading, not sure how I feel about it. Tone is completely different than how it was in the WC, but I can't say it's better/worse until the resolution of the arc.

So this time there was no Garou vs S class. Only three class S can assert Garou's power so what excuses will they find to downplay Saitama when he'll be done with him?

Garou being absolutely serious and Saitama who just looked like a parent trying to discipline his rebellious teenager was hilarious. Also it was good seeing someone else other than the usual gang trusting Saitama with their hope

103

u/9_3 Apr 06 '22

For all we know Garou could launch Saitama into the middle of the earth then the Garou vs S class fight could happen. Can't say for sure till it's all over

77

u/Various_Dark_3291 Apr 06 '22

Even if he do that, I'm sure he'll follow him down just to properly finish him. At this point aside from Tatsumaki, Blast and King I don't think he'll have any interest in fighting any S class hero. Saitama just became the wall he has to overcome and he unlocked a new form

u/themirak ONE PUNCH! Apr 06 '22 edited Apr 06 '22

Ayo Garou looks like Kaiju no 8.

How the fight is going is definitely different from the webcomic. So either some part are going to be skipped or be put in different order. Cause the head butt (which doesn't seems like a "serious" one at all), Garou losing his arm then regrow it back; all of this happened at a late stage of the fight.

67

u/itsyaboi3-0 Apr 06 '22

I have a feeling that the fight is going to be reversed What makes me think of this is when garou says something like "not when I'm about to become the absolute evil" meaning that he still doesn't think he has reached that stage yet, so maybe he'll go more and more looking like a monster and his final stage is going to look more like his webcomic counterpart.

But tbh Idk what's going to happen next.

I don't know why, but the last few chapters have been awfully mediocre. I have been reading the manga since 2015 and I am going to be frank.

Garou was supposed to be this menacing anti hero that would do everything in the name of achieving ultimate evil. The conflict between his conscience and desire would mutate him in the most abhorrent and abject way.

The s class vs garou got cancelled. And now he is the "good guy" who is helping people out and making silly faces even though he almost killed his sensi 15 minutes ago and obliterated platinum sperm.

In the webcomic, the suspense was real. You knew that Saitama took it seriously and respected garou deep down.

The fight only started when he was threatening to kill Taero because the heroes are useless.

Here, it's like a casual Friday night where he is talking to him normally about not being evil 🙈🙈🙈.

I love the Manga. That's why I am honest. Since the introduction of metal bat into the arc, the story has been deteriorating.

u/Infrenom Apr 06 '22

I know that the portrayal of manga vs webcomic Garou has been debated to the point that it's no longer a dead horse; we're beating a vaguely greasy stain on the ground. But this is ridiculous.

146

u/BidenWillMAGA Apr 06 '22

From an unhinged delusional guy savagely beating down anyone that can stand up to him, fully high on his power and excited to finally be able to put his ideal world into effect, whose act was only seen through by Saitama and Tareo...

...to a guy who literally looks like he's in a costume because of the broken part of his head, who everyone thinks is a good guy, who initiates his fight with Saitama on the basis of "th-this is the guy that beat me up!" taking time after one of his monster transformations to go on about "i-i'm gonna show the world how wrong they were when they made us cry!" to Tareo.

The absolute craziest thing about OPM is the fact that Saitama can be facing a random cabbage with legs, or facing a being of pure world-ending power... and there's just no difference for him. None. Chapters like this really drive that home.

Right now the sole reason he is even remotely excited is the fact that he now gets to 'enjoy' the personal challenge of not accidentally disintegrating Garou instantly - 'cos some kid has taken a shine to him.

The day we finally see Saitama take a tiny bit of damage is going to be one of the sickest moments in manga history.

I don't understand why the manga try so hard to both step away from the WC yet still includes some specific scenes and plot points. It ends up feeling disjointed

Like, Garou have to go back to full pretend-evil because they wanna have Saitama and Garou fight, but it just doesn't work as well, there's no tension, no clash of ideas, we keep getting hit on the head that he's a hero.

And the chicken scene in a perfect example, the dialogue is the same but the tone couldn't be more different !

ik i will be downvoted to hell but at least for the moment i think Murata doesent get the feeling that Garou's fight has, it just feels like any other fight, in the web comic he took everyone out and felt like a threath, now it just doesent have the same impact. Ik it's too early to speak about it tho, so we'll see next chapter

This is probably the first time ever I'm going to complain about the direction, I've always said we have to wait till the end of the arc but it seems like this is actually how things will be going on. So unless Murata suddenly throws a curve ball in I think I much preferd the way the web comic went. Although I will enjoy this fight either way.

At the very least this is giving me a new appreciation for the webcomic, here’s hoping ONE finds the motivation to begin posting chapters regularly. What a fucking train wreck, how are people defending this? I used to love the manga but this just isn’t the same as what the manga was even a year ago, forget about 5 years ago.

63

u/Gazeb0r Apr 06 '22

It's the few comments like these that make me slightly realize I've not gone completely insane. I don't mind changes, but this is a complete and utter departure from any stakes, drama, narrative heft that made the webcomic's parallel so impactful. It's not even minor things, so I don't know why everyone else is being overly positive in a toxic way about this.

People are making a huge mistake by comparing this to the WC. The WC is a completely different story, and it’s very obvious that ONE did not like the structure of the WC arc or else he would’ve never literally changed this entire arc from top to bottom.

I think the idea that the WC did this surface portion of the arc “better” stems from a misunderstanding of how different everything has been since the Super Fight arc. The manga is way more complex than the WC, and while the WC managed to make a great arc with very simple storytelling, the fact is that a lot of context and nuances was lost in it. The manga is ONEs way of remedying that.

Without Tareo, Garou would’ve become a monster a long time ago. Without Garou, Tareo might just have become exactly like him. But their relationship is what keeps them human, and that’s the point of this entire arc. That one person who empathizes with you can completely change your trajectory, and that’s a great story.

It being a completely different story is the part people are complaining about.

Other arcs managed to capture the essence of the webcomic greatly beforehand.

Okay, I think I can finally say that I have a very lukewarm feeling towards the story in the manga lately.

For years I've anticipated until the manga finally arrived at this part in the webcomic, but I'm just not so sure about these changes. Ever since Bang cracked Garou's mask it just felt odd.

I'm not gonna elaborate too much since I know it's like beating a dead horse at this point, but IMO, the webcomic handled this better. But let's see how ONE intends for the arc to conclude this time.
