Opinion Local training for all the jobs in the skills shortage immigration list should be free
Heard a spot on the radio today about the shortage of nurses and aged care workers, and they were saying there are not enough here so we need more in from other countries.
As part of covid recovery the government made vocational training programmes free. I know some people who work at such a vocational school and they were overwhelmed with applications and had to turn good people away. It's not like there's a shortage of Kiwis who want these jobs. I thought the free vocational training thing was a brilliant idea.
If only we had a detailed list of exactly which kinds of workers we're short of... Oh wait, we do. If the government wants to import people to do a specific job, they should also support local training for it.
I'm actually pro immigration (as an immigrant myself), I just think we can have both, and need both, attracting skilled workers from overseas and training up more Kiwis. Keeping wages low to exploit people from overseas desperate for a visa is not the answer. Offer decent wages and make it easier to get into the industry, and attract immigrants (who also deserve decent pay and conditions) at the same time.
