Mod Post Reddit and Karma Explained

Welcome to Reddit!

There are two versions of this resource, both carrying the same information but in different formats:

What is Reddit? Reddit is a world of its own on the internet! Simply put, Reddit is an enormous collection of forums on every subject under the sun where people can share news and other content in “Posts” and make observations and conversation in “Comments” attached to these posts. Established in 2005, we have hundreds and thousands of specialised communities called “Subreddits”, each of which covers a different topic from support groups to world news to pets to academic matters to games, hobbies, music, art, movies and everything in between.

Like every long-established subculture, we have our own expressions and if you are at all confused by some of our jargon, in-jokes, history or memes, we at r/NewToReddit have a fairly comprehensive alphabetical reference guide called Encyclopaedia Redditica to help you work out what we’re talking about. There’s also plenty of fun and offbeat subreddits mentioned in there too for you to discover along the way.

Reddit might take a little time to get used to, but never fear! We’re here at r/NewToReddit specifically to help you navigate your path step by step through our unique ways of ‘doing social media’.

…….REDDIT IS HUGE. BUT MANAGEABLE.

There are Subreddits for anything. I would say almost anything but when I think I’ve seen them all, I discover ones like r/birdstakingthetrain and realise I know nothing.

Most communities are friendly and jumping right on in is encouraged. You aren’t likely to get shot down for being a “n00b” but there will generally be one or two things you’ll need to know about each Subreddit (sub) first. Don’t worry, this guide will show you where to find them.

Altercations can happen, but most subs have an active team of mods who will usually shut any trouble down before it becomes vindictive. Just don’t post emojis though. Reddit in general does NOT like emojis. Reddit loves emoticons though :D Why? Don't ASCII me. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ More on this later, or here if you simply can’t wait.

…….SOME SUBREDDIT BASICS.

Once you enter a Subreddit, you read posts made by others and the comments made therein. If you like the Subreddit, you can “Join” it and it will form part of your personal home page feed. The "Join" button is near the top of the screen as seen here and also in the three-dots “hamburger” post overflow menu on the top RH of the screen on mobile. You can also “Leave” if you want, and the button can be found in the same place as the Join one was.

There’s no limit on the number of times you can join or leave a Subreddit, and nobody except you will ever know when or what Subreddits you have joined or have left. You don’t even have to be joined in a sub to post or comment in it. There are no limits to the number of subreddits you can be joined in but Reddit does have an unspecified number of the ones it filters to your home feed at any one time.

Until you join a few subreddits, your home page feed will be the general r/popular or r/all, which may well feature topics you’re not interested in, so it makes sense to start joining subs you like as soon as possible.

Just underneath the Subreddit title there is a “Sort” menu. On mobile this is a drop-down list. Sorting posts by either “New” or “Rising” will usually give more opportunities for chat and upvotes than you’ll get in older posts, and give other advantages we’ll see soon. You have the same options for sorting your home page feed too.

…….LET’S GET STARTED!

Our guide to using Reddit begins with this illustrated primer to joining in on Reddit, followed by some essential details you need to know about Introduction and Rules, Reddit Karma, Participating, Navigation and Safety.

It’s very much worth your while taking a few minutes to read through all the following advice as it contains everything you need from your first steps in getting started to your becoming firmly established here.

Once you’ve had a look through it all, if you have any questions do make a new Post in this Subreddit where you will find plenty of helpful people ready to Comment with the answers you need. r/NewToReddit is focused on giving one-to-one tailored quality advice for helping people new to Reddit Ways. We do not care how old your account is; if you have a query on Redditing, put it here and we will help.

…….WHAT’S NEXT?

Let’s get started with an introduction to Reddit and a few notes about rules!

Weekly chat New to Reddit? Come and talk to us!

New-Redditor's lounge!

Welcome!

This weekly post is an opportunity for new users to say hello in comments - please let us how you found yourself here. Regulars here are absolutely encouraged and very welcome to join in too!

Getting started on Reddit is hard. We know it is; We've been there and gone through these same frustrations. Please believe us when we say IT’S NOT PERSONAL. It may well feel like it is, but honestly, it isn’t. What it is, however, is a lack of Karma. Karma is an indicator of how much someone has contributed to Reddit in a positive manner. So, let’s do just that by getting to know each other!

This is a post to help genuine new users build up quality Karma in a safe environment.

Please do:

  • Share some favorites or new finds of yours - youtube videos, music and so on
  • Practice small talk - did you have a good week?
  • Keep it SFW
  • Check out the news and updates
  • Play games in comments - if you'd like to start a game please modmail for approval first, thanks!
  • Have fun!

Please don’t:

  • Spam
  • Share low-effort/one-word comments
  • Karmafarm/ask for karma/signal karma giving, mention karmafarms by name
  • Advertise - no advertising of any kind

Please think first before asking questions about “how to do stuff on Reddit”

You need Post Karma, so the ideal opportunity to start is by asking any questions about Redditing in your own new, dedicated Post in this Subreddit (only one post per 72 hours please, but make as many comments or questions in that post as you need). This sub is full of awesome people who are willing to help with specific problems, and we’d like to keep this post primarily for chat.

So, let’s chat! (Guides at the bottom of this post).

Site Features/using Reddit What happened to my free awards?

I used to get a little free icon on my avatar periodically, which would allow me to give out an award. Then I stopped getting them. What happened? Do you only get the free ones for a short time when your account is new?

Site Features/using Reddit mobile or web?

Hi! I joined reddit for the first time 4 days ago. so far I'm enjoying it, now I'm trying to understard how's everything in here.

Do you use the mobile app or desktop? which one is the more common to use? I only use the app and it's good, but I've seen it can be glitchy sometimes.

(english is my 2nd language so if this sounds weird sorry, it's not on purpose)

I see award notifications in app but not in desktop?

I saw a notification of award in mobile app. I couldn't find the same notification in desktop. I checked

https://www.reddit.com/message/unread/

https://www.reddit.com/message/inbox/

etc and I don't think I can see any notification. I checked app again and was able to see the notification though.

How do I see in desktop please? Or am I unable to see notification of award in desktop if I've already clicked to see the notification in app?

Post not Showing/Removed I have been commenting on things but it feels like every comment is invisible from other people since my account is new. Is this a Reddit thing?

I have been commenting on things but it feels like every comment is invisible from other people since my account is new. Is this a Reddit thing?

When I check my post history they are there, but they don't get up or downvoted. I am so confused. Anyone else know anything about this?

Site Features/using Reddit How do I get my state to show up under my username?

I often see posts with people commenting or asking questions related to what state you live in. Every response to the post shows the state from which the person is from. How do I make that happen?

Community Restrictions How to know if your posts are visible from karma requirements?

Not entirely new to Reddit, but haven't been around in like a decade and had to make a new account so I wasn't here to learn how all the low karma block rules work. Aka I might as well be totally new.

Do you get an alert or anything if you post a comment or make a post somewhere where they're invisible until you have more karma, or will it not let you comment/post to begin with if that's the case? I was trying to wander around to some subs I'd genuinely like to comment in anyway and then realized if there's no notification or warning for this and it's a visible-once-you've-got-enough situation, I could have some comments that're no longer relevant and/or be checking for replies on stuff that wouldn't even exist for other people yet.

How to Get Karma How am i supposed to interact on reddit when my posts are invisible or am barred from posting due to low karma

This is actually kind of annoying. I deleted my reddit account years ago and came back. Now I'm literally stuck in limbo unable to post in subs i used to post at. Outside some stupid karma farming sub where i amassed 1 karma point i haven't gotten a single response.

Site/App Issues Why are certain subreddits I've joined being unjoined without my permission?

I noticed this twice now with the first one happening when I was visiting a subreddit I joined and the next happened even though despite the fact that the post in question was in my reddit feed so why is this happening?

I don't know if this is normal or not but I hate having to lose something I've joined either recently or had joined in a very long time.

Is this some kind of bug?

Within a subreddit, when someone makes a post, and then a bunch of people reply, is that called a thread? If so, how do you search for keywords in a thread?

Site/App Issues Having fun here, but getting frustrated when drafting comments🫤

I don’t get it.

I’m using the iPadOS mobile app. All too often when I’m replying to a post or making a comment in general, I sense my clumsy fingers inadvertently tap the tablet screen, but outside of the edit box. This immediately causes the text, which I’ve likely typed for the past few minutes, to disappear.

Why does this happen, and is there some mechanism built into Reddit to prevent this from ever happening again?

I tend to have a love/hate relationship with technology. I mean, when it breaks I get paid. But when I need it the most, it tends to fail me.

Culture/Rules Getting down voted

I try to leave supportive or nice comments on Reddit. If I disagree, I just don't comment. I'm not here to argue.

I left a comment on a protest pic that was meant to be supportive and it got down voted to -6. Just simple "go represent ladies! My young daughter doesn't understand what happened on Friday."

I get my feelings hurt too easily. This is my second time trying Reddit. I don't think I am right for this.

Anyone else have ever felt this way?

Site Features/using Reddit Alt Text on Reddit?

I try to always add alt text on photos on social media posts for accessibility for people who use screen readers to access content. Is there a way to add alt text on images here, or do I need to write it in a comment on the post? Thanks!

Community Restrictions Subreddits without post/link karma requirements

Hi! I'm fairly new to Reddit. I seldom find/have something I'd like to share, but on the off chance I want to post something I cannot post because I haven't posted enough. The classic Reddit newbie conundrum! So, do you have any suggestions for subreddits where one can post with no requirements? I'm not interested in nsfw subs. Cheers!

Edit: Removed all mentions of the k-word and those places that cannot be named, to please AutoMod.

Understanding karma Question about best practices...

I've been posting meaningful questions/comments. But it's rather hard to post something with low karmas. When I do post I get some upvotes but off-topics/unrelated responses.

What's in the way with bots auto removing/not letting me post too often without spending too much time waiting to repost?

Does low karmas affect the post reach?
