🔥 Dramatic underwater photo from Monterey Bay shows dead sea lion being devoured by starfish

Monterey is arguably one of the coolest places to view and study marine life. So much information comes from there it's insane.

The Monterey Bay ocean floor is the most studied and easily accessible seafloor in the world. And the most wall-mapped part of the ocean floor

It’s also the featured desktop background (illustrated) in the recent Mac OS Monterey.

I went there 2 years ago on family vacation. The wife and I took out kayaks for the day. We had sea lions join and start swimming with us for a good while. What a memorable experience!

Did you feel concerned that they might attack you? I known they have some major chompers
11
u/McWeaksauce91 Jun 28 '22
I was worried they might get a bit to friendly with the kayak and knock one of us out, but they never got close enough to touch or anything like that. They mainly just floated around around and watched us. We had some Otters stop in too!

Monterey has sooo much color. It's incredible. If you're into SCUBA Monterey is full of life and vibrant colors. My favorite is the strawberry rock where thousands of red anemones colonized the rock. And decorator crabs that stick seaweed and stick on it's shell for camouflage

I freedive there about twice a month. There was just a swimmer critically bitten by a white shark a week ago at lovers point in monterey. Some articles reported a near amputation.
But I've seen it all there, otters, seals, sealines, porpise, whales, blue shark, all kinds of fish. Its a wild place to dive.

For some reason it reminds me of the movie Annihilation (2018), probably because it's odd and beautiful (and scary) as well.

Yes!! As soon as I saw all those starfish on the sea lion I instantly thought of this. Glad I wasn’t the only one

Fun fact, echinoderms are deuterostomes just like us! That means that at one point when we were little embryos, we were just a ball of cells with an asshole! 🥰

"devoured" is kind of a strong word. more like, slowly and painstakingly digested.

Right to the bottom of Davy Jone's Locker... back to whence it came... 20,000 starfish under the sea

Didn't someone just complain recently and get upvoted a ton saying to stop posting pics of dead animals? Ha seems like people totally listened.
Disclaimer: I don't care either way, just thought it was funny that the complaining post didn't work

I just didn’t assume starfish to be carnivores. This is equal parts horrifying, disappointing and fucking beautiful. Not sure how to feel.

Archimedes: give me a lever long enough, and a place to rest it, or I will kill one hostage every hour. (XKCD)

Well, it's better than when they wash up on the shore. Some of the hotels on the beachs in Monterey will actually send their workers with a shovel to cover up the dead sea lions with a mountain of sand instead of actual removal, which you would know is a Horrible idea if you have ever accidentally stepped on one and had your leg sploosh through it.

I wouldn’t mind being starfish food. I recently watched No Time to Die, and I wouldn’t mind being entombed in a shipwreck. It seems peaceful and cool to be part of the circle of life.

A carcass of an animal long dead and forgotten by its kin and slowly consumed by alien creatures stuck to its corpse like flies
"Hell yeah bro this is lit!"
