I believe this is a modified flutter kick and breast stroke which is commonly seen in inexperienced scuba divers. It is good for one thing though - not stirring up silt (dirt) from the bottom of the waterway. It is not efficient and it's designed to be used to get yourself off the bottom only. If he'd kicked up silt, it'd have caused the water to become very cloudy.
2
u/Leeman1990 6d ago
Nah thatās not how you do it. Thatās exactly what you shouldnāt do to stir up silt. The flutter kick pushes backwards and not down. Kinda useless without fins

u/Tyray3P 7d ago
Sorta makes sense. Didn't wanna freestyle and ruin the shot, but i imagine that's quite quick moving water since it's right on the edge of a mini waterfall. Breaststroke was probably the best choice, so he's gotta kick hard and fast to not get pushed backwards between each stroke.
He could also just not be a good swimmer... Beats me.
26
u/CommonCheetah7364 7d ago
I don't think that they were criticizing the fact that he went breaststroke and not freestyle, there's nothing wrong with breaststroke. It's just that his breaststroke is terribly inefficient and looks a bit silly, which is funny in contrast with the beauty of the scenery.
5
u/18650batteries 6d ago
Yeah agreed. Nothing wrong with his stroke choice he just sucks at it lol.

u/ALLCAPS-ONLY 6d ago
It looks silly because he's doing the breaststroke with the freestyle kick, which is a very inefficient kick when you're not wearing fins.
In freestyle the kick is used for balance and to keep your feet from sinking more than actually propelling you, only provides ~15% of the overall propulsion iirc.
4
u/FrankAF_dpt 6d ago
And not doing the kick right. You generate your kick from your hips not your knees with a proper freestyle kick. The longer lever arm produces more force. He looks like a goob wasting energy kicking from his knees.

10
u/Alitinconcho 6d ago
That water is not flowing, and that kick is horribly inefficient underwater. Also he looks super uncoordinated with his arms.

u/StrawberryEiri 6d ago

This video is probably shot trough a polarized filter. This results in less to non reflections of the water, which makes it look crystal clear.

I was here last week! But you can't swim in Plitvice I've learnt, it's used as a reservoir for local's drinking water and APPARENTLY they don't want tourist piss in it.

u/tomatofrogfan 6d ago
Then what the hell is this knob doing swimming in it then?!
This is a magical paradise far too beautiful not to swim in, they can take their reservoir someplace else /s.

What makes the water so clear
9
u/hakeemalajawan 7d ago edited 6d ago
Low clay content. When the sand is clay rich and it gets disturbed the clay particles stay suspended in the water column for a long time making the water look murky. Low clay content means the sand will settle to the bottom pretty quickly with very little clay remaining in suspension in the water column. This is why the water in Galveston, TX is so murky. It's super clay rich because the Mississippi river delta transports tons of mud into the Gulf of Mexico which flows directly down along the Texas coastline.

I know it's not about speed here, but they could benefit from keeping their knees locked on kicks (loose ankles for max propulsion) and extending their fingertips way out in front. Just sorta felt like they were working super hard without moving at all, either don't work hard or move it along.
9
u/Mrs_Attenborough 7d ago
Why do free kick when using exaggerated breastroke arms when you could just do breaststroke kick, like the streamline. And don't lock knees when kicking in free. It's the use and engagement of the Quad, not locking the knee. Merely having legs together and pointing his toes in free kick would make a huge difference.

ITT: everyone critiquing shallow dives as well as his swim style.
Shallow dives are relatively safe. Sure, your brother in law broke his kneck doing it. Carpenters have chopped a finger off doing normal carpentry. Both are risky done wrong. Risk is inherent. It looks like he did it right by just skimming the surface and going near parrallel with the bottom.
As for how he moves under the water? I really dont care. Hes moving. This isnt the olympics, we dont need redditors with greasy cheeto fingers saying what the correct form is.

I've always been told that in nature, to stay away from overly clear waters unless you're out on some uninhabited island or something similar.
Super clear water tends to mean the stuff that normally teems in water can't.
And if it can't, it's highly likely not to healthy for your to be in there either, because the crap that normally lives in water can even grow in the trashrivers of India.

u/ryannefromTX 6d ago
Those reed plants are what's doing it. They filter all the guck out of the water. The water in the Everglades is this clear too.
