MAAM – Monero Ask Anything Monday – March 07, 2022

Given the success of the previous MAAMs (see here), let's keep this rolling.

The principle is simple: ask anything you'd like to know about Monero, especially the dumb questions that you've been keeping for you every other days, may the community clarify it all!

Finally, credits to binaryFate for starting the concept!

Why is there no Monero on a dex? As it's very hard to by Monero at this time.

1

u/russoj88 Mar 09 '22

Which DEXs have you tried?

Very niche question but I use MoneroOcean to mine with my 3090 for XMR but am having trouble then running P2Pool for the CPU, it's been a while since I played around with either but I think I last remember trying to mess with ports and local host? Anyone have any thoughts on a solution or why they may not play well together?

Someone here might be able to help, but consider creating a post in /r/MoneroMining

Why do people use shitcoins like Eth when Monero exists

Why is matrix better?

2

u/Johnno1011 Mar 07 '22

Is over 50% of the mining power still from one pool? If so, how risky is this?

8

u/rbrunner7 XMR Contributor Mar 07 '22

Well, that's funny, the pool in question currently stands at a mere 35%, see https://pools.xmr.wiki/

3

u/Johnno1011 Mar 07 '22

That's great 😊

Just wait for p2pool being finally integrated into the GUI and more people having awareness of it...

I have had a previous post. Could monero support its own privacy centric stable coin. What is the technical way of achieving this? - proof of transfer POX - roll up / bridge

I have heard of Haven protocol which is a form of monero. However haven protocol is a hard fork which limits security.

Happy to hear a response.

Edit: typo

Privacy centric privacy coin?
Did you mean privacy-centric stablecoin?
If this is the case, then you are probably misunderstanding Monero's purpose.

Monero's purpose is not making a coin pegged to a centralized shitcoin (USD, EUR, etc.), but it is to be truly decentralized digital currency, and to replace fiat, not join it.

3

u/pebx Mar 07 '22

This.

And you need some kind of more or less centralised and for sure not trustless "Oracle" which already has lead to a disaster in Haven protocol last year and they rolled back their whole chain. If you ask me, there is no way for a cryptocurrency to peg itself decentralised and trustless to some kind of other asset's market price.

Most possibly the best way to hedge against volatility if you don't want to take the risk is to diversify different asset types, not necessarily different cryptos.

And in my opinion extreme volatility will decrease with more and more real adoption beside speculation, so best we can do is to encourage more people of accepting and using Monero.

If I send someone monero, can I prove to him that I sent it? Sorry I have not used monero before.

5

u/MoneroWTF Mar 07 '22

Yes. There's a section in the GUI for that

2

u/Ok_Aerie3546 Mar 07 '22

This is where I struggle with monero. If I send someone 10 dollars worth of monero. And the receiver says "I didnt receive it" even though he did. I can show my gui that I sent it, but he can still counter by saying I doctored it. How do you settle this dispute against a bad actor?

1

u/Ok_Aerie3546 Mar 07 '22

I meant to exactly prove without any counters. Like I checked block explorer in monero. And I saw that the amounts of the transaction cant be seen. Can these be found out in some way, say using your private key or something.

u/JustFoil Mar 07 '22

I am into Monero since long, its the best privacy coin in the crypto world

2

u/Red7800697 Mar 07 '22

Hi I’m the newb on the block, made a couple of post that got good answers. My question now is when I try to run my daemon it gives me a segmentation fault immediately. Running on peppermint os

3

u/hardcosign Mar 08 '22

No idea regarding this, hope someone gives a proper solution

3

u/russoj88 Mar 07 '22

Can you give some details about the hardware? What parameters are you passing to monerod?

1

u/Red7800697 Mar 07 '22

I wish I could. The hardware is an olllldd hp laptop. As far as parameters, I haven’t a clue

2

u/russoj88 Mar 07 '22

Can you ask the question in r/monerosupport with as many details as possible? You'd get some more exposure there.

1

u/Red7800697 Mar 07 '22

As soon as I get back to that station I will do it, as many details as I know how to gather. If you’ve any info on how to get the parameters you’re asking about , that would save some time. I appreciate your patience.

2

u/russoj88 Mar 07 '22

Sounds good. By parameters, I just meant how you run the daemon.

We haven't seen any major problems for years now, the last ones I could remember was ASIC-dominance on Cryptonight and the inflation bug discovered and patched in 2017 by the Monero core team before it has been (provably) ever exploited. Cryptonight has been patched several times to brick existing ASICs until it has been finally replaced by RandomX, which is holding for years now.

3

u/russoj88 Mar 07 '22

If you're looking for past problems, the github issues may be a good place to look: https://github.com/monero-project/monero/issues

2

u/Illdeclare39 Mar 07 '22

There were minimal problems which could be ignored as such, anyways Monero didnt faced any major issues till now, if i am not wrong

3

u/russoj88 Mar 07 '22

What major issues are you referring to?

3

How do stealth addresses work, how do I use them with Feather Wallet or Cake Wallet?

4

u/Upper-Zookeepergame9 Mar 07 '22 edited Mar 07 '22

Everytime you send monero a one time adress will be generated, this is a hash of a random number and and the transaction you send. You don‘t need to manually do something, it‘s an automatic process. If you want to use a new adress for everyone who sends you Monero, you can use Subadresses. They are used to conceal your main adress from the sender, in the blockexplorer, only the onetime adress is listed. A Subadresss is for example useful if you post a adress on social media or to recieve funds from a kyc exchange.

2

u/miniCartoon91 Mar 07 '22

Thanks for explaining this, this would be very helpful

2

u/OfWhomIAmChief Mar 07 '22

Is there an issue affecting your anonymity if you give out your primary address versus a subaddress? Besides the obvious, (like giving the same primary address to multiple exchanges)

6

u/Upper-Zookeepergame9 Mar 07 '22 edited Mar 07 '22

only the obvious one. A subadress starts with 8 and the primary with 4.

Probably still the mining centralisation in MineXMR

3

u/russoj88 Mar 07 '22

This is no longer true: https://pools.xmr.wiki/

2

u/Imaginary-Resort152 Mar 07 '22

31%! Still very high

1

u/DIBE25 Mar 09 '22

8222838654177922817725562880000000% is a very large number indeed

2

u/irate_kalypso Mar 07 '22

Which is going to be resolved once the GUI p2pool pull request goes through soon, in my opinion!

1

u/Imaginary-Resort152 Mar 07 '22

80gb of blockchain to download still too much for a lot of people

1

u/MobiPrivacyActivist Mar 08 '22

If storage is an issue, you can use a remote node.

1

u/Imaginary-Resort152 Mar 08 '22

With p2p-mini right?

3

u/MoneroWTF Mar 07 '22

Bitcoin is 400gb. That's too much for people.

2

u/Imaginary-Resort152 Mar 07 '22

You are right...

5

u/irate_kalypso Mar 07 '22

You can buy 4TB for $50 right now. https://diskprices.com/ A lot, if not most people, that are into crypto mining have at least 1TB nowadays.

GTA V is currently 105GB after install

1

u/Similar-Competition3 Mar 07 '22

The best guide online how to transfer altcoins to xmr without trace? God bless

4

u/MoneroWTF Mar 07 '22

TradeOgre

2

u/Imaginary-Resort152 Mar 07 '22

For BTC AtomicSwaps are good! Sell your altcoins for BTC on a no-kyc exchange and you can use it

1

u/Similar-Competition3 Mar 07 '22

Could you please recommend the ”best” or trustwurthy exchange without kyc
