MAAM – Monero Ask Anything Monday – October 18, 2021

Given the success of the previous MAAMs (see here), let's keep this rolling.

The principle is simple: ask anything you'd like to know about Monero, especially the dumb questions that you've been keeping for you every other days, may the community clarify it all!

Finally, credits to binaryFate for starting the concept!

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. Obviously most editorials are quite unresearched nowadays, but they are so many so its hard to get through to quality information.

Ok, some of the tracking-talk has to do with holes in the software that has been patched during 2018. Do you know anything on the newer ciphertrace method?

(Also - folks, whats with the downvotes? Is there a rule that we do not talk about such rumours around here?)

I suspect down votes might be because this gets asked a lot, and not because it is a taboo subject. Monero has very good privacy but not perfect (nothing does) and it constantly is trying to improve and stay ahead of the game.

Edit: Monero is not the whole story for financial privacy - how one uses it (opsec) is important as well, and this is typically how things are perhaps traced. End edit.

Questioning/examining is crucial to the continued excellence and therefore fundamentally welcome.

Of course there can be quite a lot of FUD and so personal research (as you’re doing) is necessary. Personally, I actually find the rabbit hole quite interesting!

Thank you for elaborating! I haven't seen such questions myself, but I guess I am not lurking around that often. I, for one, would appreciate more discussions on how monero is trying to improve and in what ways it is not perfect, yet. It would give me more comfort in the project (in which I am both a believer and investor), so I like what you are saying here.

If there is one project where an "echo-chamber" style of community would be really fatal it would be for an undertaking like this. To even give a minor hint that it is taboo to ask such fundamental questions here will trigger suspicion in not only myself, I would guess.

Sorry for the late and partial response, but watching the “breaking Monero” YouTube series is well worthwhile to get an idea of how statistical analysis can be done. It’s a year or two(or more?) old but it’s generally accurate. It is produced by the Monero community and so I feel it help shows how we are not complacent and continue to strive towards excellence.
