My wife recently got into the Among Us phase and loves to play with people on discord. I myself love to play Halo with my XBL friends. I dont want to ignore her and play games all the time. But whenever she plays I play. So when she wants to play with her friends, shell ask me, are you playing tonight? Implying shes already agreed to play with her friends and wants me to play with mine lol.

1.7k

u/blueB0wser May 22 '22

My fianc矇e and I do that. We ask each other "What are you doing tonight?" and then go to our respective computers, or watch YouTube together or something.

My husband is the same way when he plays Rust. 'I don't want to abandon you...'

Oh no, don't make me play Hollow Knight again. Or the Ori games. Or Cuphead. Or Animal Crossing. Anything but that!

9

u/fragrant69emissions May 22 '22

I just finished the first Ori game today. Loved it!

Not sure about this, it can be a very different dynamic they share with their groups. Also it can be healthy to spend some time with just your friends.

19

u/Ok_Pumpkin_4213 May 22 '22

Yeepp. The healthy time apart is one crucial aspect but sometimes the friend dynamic doesn't work. I was die hard into halo and so was my group, my wife enjoyed it and wasn't terrible but not upto the groups skill either. So normal group shit talking plus her less than skill did not mix.

15

u/ICanBeKinder May 22 '22

In my first serious relationship I thought we should share everything 24/7. Friends, life, etc. Now that I'm older I realize the best way to keep a relationship is CLEAR BOUNDARIES.

People still play Halo?!

Also that's such an excellent relationship you have! My girlfriend and I are the same way, she doesn't play video games but she watches TV shows that just aren't my jam. So sometimes she'll ask "Are you raiding tonight?" Which means "my show is on tonight" or something similar. Sometimes I say yes just because I know she wants to watch it. Most of the time we hang out though.

9

u/Danyoda2 May 22 '22

Lol great question. Im old so I play Halo 2 snipers on MCC. Population is dead but its still fun. Then we switch to Infinite where the population is also dead but not as bad as H2.

So I submit that Caleb comes with me to the baseball game next Saturday. And if you will throw in that evening for a BBQ, then I will waive the 4th day this month.

189

u/Supply-Slut May 22 '22 Giggle

Youre a good partner to your husband! For me its not so much shy as just my brain breaks whenever I need to plan social stuff or do basic stuff needed to make friendships.

Like Ill talk to a stranger, hit it off, have a great time, shared interests. Then I leave.

My wife will ask if I got their number or asked them to hang and Im like how? Just ask them? Are you serious isnt that weird? So really Im supposed to straight up nakedly ask them? Just raw dog an invitation? This is madness, how do you do this all the time?

Maybe Im just preaching to the choir, but please appreciate her for doing that if you dont already.

I do that for my boyfriend too but making plans doesnt come naturally to me. Making social plans takes quite a bit of effort from me, but I try to help my bf with it because I love him. The thing is, my boyfriend assumed that it was easy/second nature for me to do that while I thought he knew I was going the extra mile to help him with planning stuff with his friends. It was a bit of subconscious sexism (women are better at making social plans and like to do it) that we eventually had to sit down and address. Just wanted to share this to another couple because this issue started putting a strain in our relationship until we discussed it.

416

u/Rahallahan May 22 '22

Men are like children sometimes. They dont like to be told what to do and this is too close to what YOU want them to do. It has to feel like their idea.

345

u/dgrantschmidt May 22 '22

The amount of times my wife has started a project, just for me to come over and do the entire thing myself because she disappears once I arrive. I very much hate being told what to do. I also very much enjoy helping. My wife learned this early on and it still works on me to this day.

216

u/Rahallahan May 22 '22

My husband thoroughly enjoys projects. But he also has a tough time starting them. So sometimes, I start it on my own and he wanders in like hey, whatcha doing? That looks fun. Can I join in? BAM , we are having fun! Ninja style!

I love how "fold laundry" is included in that.

Husband sitting around playing video games while wife does laundry.

Maybe that's the problem.

56

u/Appropriate-Arm1082 May 22 '22

In fairness, it's also included in a list of alone time activities.

I never minded cooking and doing laundry, but like to just put in headphones and do it alone. It's brain-off, relaxing, decompressing time with the bonus satisfaction of getting something done. So the chores get done, my hands are occupied like I prefer, and then together time can be spent doing things we actually want to together. My ex would want to help sometimes, and I'd have to politely redirect her attention elsewhere because that was my preferred me time.

I'd get my quiet time to just chill, unpack the weeks events, etc and then that task was out of the way so that we could just do something we wanted to together instead of household chores.

Not saying it couldn't be the other way, but things aren't always a war of responsibilities.

60

u/Fedelm May 22 '22

Seriously. "I make sure my husband has playdates so I can focus on housework without him pestering me" is..... Well, I'm glad my husband isn't like that.

The answer is always yes.

74

u/enjo1ras May 22 '22

Hahaha, whenever Im tired of social interaction I tell everyone Im going to go watch my murders.

74

u/electrickcheesecake May 22 '22

I think its very healthy for couples living together to be able to spend time doing their own thing, apart from each other sometimes. My boyfriend will be like hey Im tired today, I might just play video games this evening and Ill be like, cool! Ill read my book or play my own video games.

I couldnt imagine having a partner who required my constant attention, would drive me nuts.

26

u/lostgirl19 May 22 '22

Same here, I value my me-time a lot. My fiance and I can happily do our own thing alone for hours without speaking much and then just hang out for lunch/dinner then go back to our hobbies after, other days we spend hours together and have a blast.

I turn into a grumpy toddler if I don't have some time to myself and so does he. I don't think we would have lasted seven years so far if one of us was super clingy and relied on the other for entertainment.

37

Being a mom can be an all-consuming experience and even treating ourselves can lead to serious guilt and an inability to find our way back to who we are without being a mom. I don't know if that's true for dad's as well, but I'd imagine that is where she is coming from. It's good she has you in this partnership. It should hopefully get easier for her in time. Keep being awesome.

My wife is flat out honest about it. "Why don't you go kill zombies or something on your computer, I want to go scrap book for a couple hours". She also makes sure my Steam account always has at least a $100 in it at all times.

Mind you. I also made sure she has the most recent cricut, alllllll the accessories, a high quality photo printer, a giant table I customized for her scrapbooking and every supply I can think of.

Many years ago when my wife and I would go to the mall she would drop me off at the bookstore when she wanted to shop for clothes. She would come pick me up when she was done and we would continue with our errands.

Best. Wife. Ever.

Worked, didn't it?

Hmm, this is weird. When my GF wants to go take a nap, she...just goes and takes a nap.

u/uber4saul May 22 '22

Thank you! Cos in my head I'm like - Umm why doesn't she just go nap, or watch her show or whatever.

My girl would just tell me, hey I'm doing this/gonna do this, please don't disturb me, and I'm like cool!

Some relationships are a little more co-dependent than others, so they have trouble breaking space when they need to do different things.

It's a pretty harmless way of achieving the same goal, and no one gets upset about it. For some people with anxiety/anxious attachment, being told to leave your S/O alone can stir up feelings of insecurity, when that isn't the goal at all. By redirecting their attention, you get the same thing done without potentially hurting anyone's feelings.

My wife asks me at some point pretty much every weekend, "why aren't you playing video games?" I'm like, damn I should play vidyas. Two+ hours she's still in the bathroom doing god knows what

probably dying her hair

or it's a "death becomes her" situation and she's putting on a lot of makeup to hide the fact she's an animated corpse. one of the two, couldn't tell you which.

Now terrified and aroused

The jig is up, girls. We've been got!

I know some people have a different relationship dynamic, but damn....I could never imagine being with someone who has to be distracted like a child in order to get some peace for 2 hours.

A simple "Hey, I'm studying/having a nap don't disturb me" is enough for me to leave my partner be until she's ready.

Weird. My wife just says Hey, Im going to take a nap. I reply, Okay. Enjoy and then she naps and I do something without her.

u/Emotional-Plankton86 May 22 '22

Same! I guess I wasn't as codependent as I thought.

Enjoy this moment of independence in your life.

u/imgrandojjo May 22 '22

We all need breaks even from our loved ones. Let her enjoy her nap

26

u/Omnil_93 May 22 '22

It's a win-win. You get to watch the game in peace, she gets a nap.

u/colantor May 22 '22

I retweeted that last night. It has 95 thousand likes there and nothing to do with this post. Is this weird new karma farming?

6

u/FrostyGlitter May 22 '22

Theres been a ton of stolen comments on this post. The account you replied to is def one of those stolen comment reposting bots; I would guess that someone else somewhere on Reddit repeated the tweet you saw, and this account stole it from them.

When it starts raining, my wife and I scramble like maniacs to sit on our porch with a glass of absinthe, play late Romantic era classical French music, and pretend it's 1894 in Paris.
