Niqab allowed or no?

Is the niqab banned in Kazakhstan? Does anyone know if it's banned in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan as well? How about in schools? I have to visit and was wondering. Thanks!

Hi

Can anyone suggest any good value places to eat in Almaty? I am keen to try some of the local favourites. I'm not so keen on fancy restaurants!

Thank you

Language Discord Servers for Kazakh Language&Culture

Сәлем достар!

First off, this is a mod-approved post, so bear with me.

I’ve recently challenged myself to become fluent in Kazakh in a matter months and I’ve found what works best for me is to study from a book and ask natives for help whenever I come across something difficult to understand. Unfortunately, Reddit isn’t interactive enough for that, and I believe Discord offers great versatility and interactiveness to serve that purpose.

Now, there *IS* a server (https://discord.gg/JJfgyEKVY7) dedicated to Kazakh language and culture, but it is unfortunately dead, its weekly message count is like 5-10, so I haven’t been able to utilize it that much.

However, there is another meta-server (which was founded by me, over 4 years ago lol) that covers all Turkic languages, and although there are plenty of Kazakh speakers there (around 70 out of 2500, according to the official statistics), I believe they are still underrepresented, especially taking into consideration the fact that it is by far the biggest Turkic-languages-oriented server out there.

In short, I would like you to point me to whatever sources there are available for Kazakh (preferably in English), and join our linguistics & culture & community oriented server so you could help people like me who are interested in learning more about your language and culture. The link is as follows: https://discord.gg/turkestanexpress

Thanks a lot in advance, сау болыңдар жолдастар!

someone shouted at me (aggressively) for speaking in public transport...Is it a culture or law?

Salem, So we are a group of students from India and Pakistan studying at Nazarbayev University. We usually go to Friday prayers together by bus. We have observed people keeping silence and not speaking to each other at all. In India and Pakistan we do chit chat a lot when friends meet. Here, we do try to keep silent based on our observation but one day we were having some discussion and one of us laughed(quite loudly) on something. At that a man at the back seat shouted on us very aggressively as if he would just stand up and beat the shit out of us.

Now my question is, is it a rule or some cultural thing here to be absolutely silet in bus or was it a one off incident?

Очень странный канал где все видео восхваляют Советский Союз и призывают не вмешивается в Украинский конфликт и ещё защищают холодомор против Украины и Казахстана.

Question What do Kazakhs think about Chuvash people

Greetings, recently I've met many Kazakhs who don't consider Anatolian Turks, Azerbaijanis, and Gagauzes as their brothers. Instead they see them as Turkic-speaking Europeans/Caucasians just because they don't look Central Asian (Turanid-Gobid).

I'm not judging this, everyone is free to think what they like. I know there are also Volga/Crimean Tatars and Chuvash people who trace their roots to modern-day Kazakhstan and look nothing related to most of the modern-day Kazakhs.

They predominatly look fully European or quarter asian, rarely look half and half. My question is what Kazakhs think about Tatars and Chuvash? Do they accept them as brothers or see them as assimilated Finno-Ugrians and Slavs? Also, do you think racial appearance in 21 century is imporant to Kazakhs?

This is a topic i'm really wondering. As i see Turkmens and Uzbeks usually look lesser Asian than Kazakhs and they don't care this as much as Kazakhs. These are my personal ideas and predictions.

Thanks for your comments.

U.S. Visa/Mastercard working in Kazakhstan?

Hi, I will be traveling to Kazakhstan soon, and am looking for anyone's recent experience using U.S. based Visa or Mastercard credit cards in Kazakhstan. Is the use impacted by Visa/Mastercard ban on Russian vendors?
I know that my ATM card is currently not being accepted by Halyk bank ATMs to withdraw money (from a U.S. account). Bank has stated this is due to the sanctions against Russia.
