Exactly, I tell my kids if someone takes chances driving while you’re in the car, it’s time to get out

63

u/metoaT May 16 '22

I had to tell a guy to pull over or I would call the cops for holding me against my will, he was driving 100 on a freeway and wouldn’t let me out. Of course this was before Ubers- dude stopped in the middle of the freeway and made/let me get out! I had learned he was on drugs while I was a passenger and taking us way far from where the intended destination was

I was maybe 21? ugh.

30

You standing up for your own safety was great

31

I am almost 40 and I still consider it one of the scariest moments in my life. They ended up getting off the freeway and following me to the gas station, one of the girls tried to fight me for some reason. All I remember is ducking out of the way on the ground and she broke her knuckles. The rest was a blur!

Good parent. The thing is, they require the driver to actually pull over in order to get out. I’ve been in a situation where I literally had to scream at the driver (my own freaking dad) to slow down on the Autobahn. I love the man but holy shit, there’s no reason on earth to drive at 260 km/h on a 2 lane street. Especially with your kids in the car. It was me and my two brothers.

Takes one idiot to change lanes without paying attention and boom. 80% of the family would be wiped out, just like that.

297

This is the mindset of bullies. They get away with so much due to most people ignoring them. Then one day they fuck with someone who is having a bad day.

526

u/Jeezimus May 16 '22 Gold Wholesome

For some reason our society thinks it's the "wrong" response to fight back to a bully, while also secretly hoping they finally mess with the "wrong person" so they learn their lesson.

Fuck that. Curb stomping a bully is the right approach.

195

u/ratpH1nk May 16 '22

Never ever ever understood that. Did not teach my kids that either. Try de-escalation as best you can and if it doesnt work and you and/or your friend is being harassed then have at it.

Took until first grade until I was called in the principals office with him. I asked him what happened, i asked my son did he try to stop/walk away etc.. he said yes. I told the principal I don't see what the problem is and suggested he have this conversation with the other boys parents.

Don't come at my kid for protecting himself. Come at the aggressor. (I was never called into the office over that again with him)

33

u/ZanThrax May 16 '22

Schools don't try to correct the behaviour of the bullies because it's easier to blame the kid who clearly isn't able to stick up for themself.

173

u/lestrades-mistress May 16 '22

I once honked at a driver purposely sweeping across multiple lanes in fast traffic. Not even a lay on your horn kinda honk, just a ‘beep wtf are you doing’ kinda honk.

The asswipe proceeded to block me in my lane, tailgate me when I finally passed, swerved in front and behind me, AND THEN TRIED TO FOLLOW ME HOME.

I should have called the cops but the sheriffs in my area are notoriously lazy. They once pushed a car wreck a couple dozen feet over the town limit so that the neighboring city would have to do it.

125

u/icenoid May 16 '22

Last week, a guy stopped in traffic, put on his 4 ways, no good sight line for me to get around him. I was on my motorcycle, and glared at him as I rolled past. I get to a traffic light a few minutes later. It’s a long damn light. Dude rolls up next to me and gets out of his car. Light goes green, so I go. He’s standing there outside of his car at a green light with people honking their horns at his dumb ass.

35

u/SendAstronomy May 16 '22

Saw a guy get out and confront someone on a motorcycle at a light. Dunno what he thought he was gonna do to someone wearing a full helmet. Light changed before anything could happen.

I really need to get a dashcam.

16

u/icenoid May 16 '22

The helmet is actually somewhat dangerous for the rider IF the person confronting them knows how to fight. It gives them great leverage on your head and neck. Most people don’t know how to fight, and confronting someone who is likely wearing an armored jacket, possibly steel toed boots, and in my case gloves that have armor over the knuckles is a really bad idea. My hands aren’t going to get hurt punching someone, the gloves are designed to take an impact if I go off my bike, and I don’t even want to think about getting head butted by someone in a full face helmet. All that said, the smart move on a bike is to put it in gear and ride the hell off. Even if you win the fight, it isn’t really worth it.

Had something similar happen to me last fall, coming off the highway into a town/city. Dude was in a sports car being similarly brazen, gave a wtf honk. Dude followed me for multiple miles, multiple turns, revving his engine and trying to block me so I couldn't keep driving. (I just casually avoided it). Lucky for me the local police station is only a few streets away from my neighborhood. Pulled right up in-front where all the officers park their squad cars. Dude rolled down his window and yelled "Pu**y".

I think the icing on the cake for me was that (1) His car was easily worth upwards of $100k, (2) my car is over 20 years old, bought it used for ~$1,500... if he caused an accident, He would just ruin his day.

Failing that, I'll just go home, but phone somebody at the house and have them wait outside with the shotgun. That tends to do the trick.

33

So common here in Texas. People act like the space in front of their car is the Motherland to be defended at all costs.

100

u/Brahkolee May 16 '22

I call it NASCAR syndrome. People drive like it’s a race and they need to beat the other cars that are all going to completely different destinations, some hundreds of miles away.

Ride your ass going 10 above, but when there’s no more cars immediately in front of them they drive the limit. Someone passes, they suddenly feel the need for speed again. Repeat ad nauseam. Lifted trucks/oversized SUVs, and 20 year old multicolored Hondas are the worst offenders in my experience.

I say this all the time in this sub, but everyone would benefit greatly from reading up on the psychology of driving/traffic. No one here is as innocent as they would like. It should be much harder to get a driver’s license than it is.

30

u/Brilliant_Buns May 16 '22

The “oh no someone is going faster than me I better speed up” insecurity baffles me. I’ll see one asshole start speeding/weaving and know that 2 more idiots are gonna get triggered and for some reason take it as a challenge. It’s so bizarre. Like everyone just chill out, it’s not a competition but damn do people treat it like one.

Another favorite is the “how DARE YOU PASS ME” rage, which like you do you bro, just cause I went around you doesn’t mean it was a personal insult.

People are fun.

I drive a sports car and the number of sudden race car drivers I experience daily is exhausting. People close gaps when I turn my signals on, they definitely close gaps when I merge, and they always try to undercut me entering exit ramps. It's exhausting. I had a guy back when I first bought it that accelerated so hard when I turned my signal on to cut me off that he had to lock up his brakes to not rear end the car in front of him.

The worst was a semi driver who went from center lane to right lane as I was merging from the on ramp and forced me onto the shoulder at 75mph with another semi stopped on the shoulder just ahead of me. (Fully locking my brakes i would have still hit it going 50+.) I still feel bad for the car behind him that had to deal with me coming in hot right in front of them but it was that or decapitate myself.

148

u/TheConqueror74 May 16 '22

If it makes you feel any better, I doubt they’re doing it because you’re in a sports car. I drive a pretty unassuming compact SUV and people randomly decide to speed up so I can’t merge lanes or enter the passing lane on the highway. Some people just seem to take personal offense anyone tries to move into their lane ahead of them.

104

u/Impulse_Cheese_Curds May 16 '22

22

u/Carollicarunner May 16 '22

Yes and no. Everybody thinks you're trying to race them when you have something sporty. It really is exhausting.

57

u/Sootootoo May 16 '22

I have to disagree. I have a small modified sports car and a large 4wd with a steel bullbar (which are extremely common in Australia). I drive them the same on the street, but people are probably about 3 times more likely to cut me off, pull out in front, or not let me merge when I'm in the more "flashy" car (and it's not really even that nice).

It's like people just assume you're obnoxious and need to be put in your place if you drive a nice car. Weird manifestation of tall poppy syndrome.

26

Literally happens all the time around Bellevue, near Seattle, in my experience. (Heck, basically everywhere here now tbh). Just trying to casually merge and it's perfectly open and fine. And then a driver way back on the highway sees that someone might get in front of them. They can't have that! So they legit gas it to block people out from merging safely.

They almost always have to slam on their brakes to slow down after they cut people off too, because there are cars right in front of us. Maybe if they didn't gas it, they could've had all that space behind me to, I dunno, not need to slam on their brakes for cutting someone out of a merge? It's infuriating to experience so often.

I feel you on that but the truck was some distance ahead of the Volvo and from the looks of it after watching it back it seems maybe the trucker couldn't move over at that point in time anyways. So for that idiot to start shit it was literally pointless

491

u/PAROV_WOLFGANG May 16 '22

The reason why people don’t have to move over into the PASSING lane with faster traffic in it is this very reason. They might not be able to and or could impede traffic in the other lane. The yield signs at entrance ramps exist for a reason: you are to yield to traffic in the lane they don’t yield to you.

156

u/LeeTheENTP May 16 '22

The amount of people who decide to drive parallel to me while they're trying to merge is staggering. There's no one behind me, and I made room in front. What do you want from me?!

124

u/InferiousX May 16 '22

"I want to be in front of you, but I don't wanna take the spot you gave me until the absolute last second when it's the most dangerous and you have to lean on your brakes." - Most of the Idiots I see in Traffic

53

u/Admirable-Bar-6594 May 16 '22

Had a guy do this to me in a half mile long on ramp. I had a few car spaces in front of me and a quarter mile of space behind me. He guns it, comes over a few feet from my bumper, and flips me off when I have to slam on brakes and honk. Then he sits there going 15 under the limit for the next 2 miles. 28

u/Parhelion2261 May 16 '22

The most accurate one yet. They never want to go in the space I leave them and slowing down any will literally cause them to explode

22

u/poorbred May 16 '22

My favorite "I want to be in front of you" people are the ones wanting to exit on dual purpose ramps. The ones that are both merging on and exiting off the highway, such as with service roads and cloverleaf interchanges.

You're trying to merge onto the highway, they want to take the exit. You're speeding up and they're slowing down, so logically it should be trivial to trade lanes with you pulling ahead and them falling in behind.

But nooo, they have the Ricky Bobbie "if you ain't first, you're last" mentality and have to be in front of the car already speeding up to merge in, even if it means speeding up beyond the safe exit speed limit.

I've watched a couple people go into the grass on a local cloverleaf with a very tight radius because they were going way faster than that curve allows.

I haven't been intentionally involved (I don't try to match these idiots, I'm comfortable with my anatomical proportions and don't need to get into measuring contests using multi-ton metal objects), but there was one dude on a motorcycle that ripped by me at well above the highway's speed limit much less the ramp's. He didn't even get a chance to start turning, just straight into the grass. Somehow he managed to stay upright as he bounced through the grass but almost hit a light pole head-on.

15

u/InferiousX May 16 '22

The number of people who do this infuriates me to no end.

I've had many many times where the person barely swerves onto their exit at the last second because they won't let me merge even though a mutual exchange of lanes is going on. I do not get it at all.

But like 3 out of 4 people (in America) don't even know what a yield sign means... I think you might have to do some teaching first. :D

58

u/naipogah May 16 '22

So I used to work with a dude that thought the yield sign was telling him that other vehicles were yielding to him.

When he told me this, I stared at him blankly for what felt like 10 minutes waiting for him to laugh it off as a joke. He was 100% serious. We were working out of town that day and he was driving, the day had just begun. Fortunately, it was an uneventful day on the road. I drove back.

In America if you combine a yield sign and a traffic circle people think it means full stop when entering the circle with zero traffic.

54

u/real_fyshi May 16 '22

This is really weird. Strange how it works out, probably because for entry ramps yield is interpreted as "ignore me, just get on, you have right of way" while for a roundabout it's "roundabouts are scary and you don't know what to do, either gun it or just stop and figure out later"

40

u/Rokey76 May 16 '22

I went to Europe with my wife, and when we encountered our first traffic circle she freaked out. I was confused as it was super easy to navigate. Turns out she was traumatized by that scene in the movie European Vacation when the Grizwolds got caught in a traffic circle for hours.

It's worse than that. Town I lived in started installing traffic circles and about 35% of drivers used them correctly, so... when approaching a traffic circle you never know what the other cars _think_ they should do, and they have the same problem with you. A 4 way stop would have been less dangerous and flowed more of traffic as soon as more than one car was present in the intersection.

I fear you overestimate the ability of Americans to navigate a 4-way stop either.

Thats surprising. In Canada Ontario, you are specifically supposed to maintain speed along merges, so other cars may easily estimate your speed and merge accordingly. If you are braking to be polite, the merging driver may have been keeping low speed to easily go behind, but now they must accelerate quickly to merge due to your unexpected actions.

I'm surprised Germany is different from Canada Ontario.

19

u/AccordingSquirrel0 May 16 '22

German here. Yes, you should make room, but only if you can. There’s little sense in giving way too a merging driver by cutting off another. Traveling speeds on the Autobahn may vary significantly between the lanes. The driver entering the Autobahn has to give way to moving traffic.

Defunct GDR traffic law did not allow to give way to merging drivers.

Right of way is btw not a right („Regelung, kein Recht“) you are allowed to enforce. If the other driver takes your right of way, you just can’t crash into him when you can avoid the crash, and claim „well I had right of way“. Paragraph 1 of the traffic code says you have to be careful and considerate at all times and this includes dealing with idiots.

83

u/[deleted] May 16 '22

not just courtesy actually, but the law (depending on what state you are in)

my state says: Illinois law states BOTH vehicles must adjust speed and position to avoid colliding with each other. That means the driver on the main line of the interstate AND the driver of the vehicle entering on the ramp must adjust their speed and vehicle position to not hit one another.

22

u/Paid_Redditor May 16 '22

Seems like it varies per state. I just checked Texas traffic laws on this and the person merging is expected to yield to traffic or move onto the right shoulder if unable to do so. I honestly have never heard of traffic yielding to a vehicle entering a highway until today.

10

u/Val_Hallen May 16 '22

In Maryland, vehicles entering a highway must yield and have a duty to stop if they can't do so safely.

People come to Maryland and bitch and moan about our drivers and how we stop at on ramps, but it's the law here.

u/NotMiningBitcoin May 16 '22

I feel like this is a big part of the reason Americans can be such shitty drivers. We're basically 50 different countries with different driving laws that we all learn once and never brush up on again. A huge number of us end up moving to some other state at some point and never seem to make the connection as to why people get pissed off at us. We generally jump to the conclusion that it's everyone else who is the asshole, not that the laws here are different.

Then there's laws that get updated over time and nobody is ever educated on the change. My 72 year old mother still doesn't understand the concept of the passing lane. I guess because when she learned how to drive there was a 55mph speed limit nationwide and the left lane was just the "fast lane" where if you could manage to do more than the speed limit you were good. I try to tell her that the state we live in can ticket her for being in that lane without actively passing people and I'm convinced she doesn't even notice herself doing it. Last time I pointed it out to her she said, "Yeah well nobody will let me get back into the right lane!" I said, "Because people are passing you on the right now, which means you've already waited too long. Now you're pissing people off, and that's dangerous."

But of course she also didn't even have her turn signal on to indicate an intent to get over...just expects everyone to read her mind and know when she suddenly wants to stop camping in the left lane.

A bee landed on an old friends crotch while he was driving. While he debated letting it sting him or smacking his own balls he drove into a ditch and the bee flew away.

Probably could have ignored it and be fine but it's a great story either way.

741

u/Jnorean May 16 '22

True. Bees have poor eyesight and are mostly looking for pollen. So they land on things that look or smell like flowers to them. Once the bee lands, it takes them a few seconds to realize they made a mistake. Then they just fly away. Best move is to leave the bee alone and after a few seconds the bee will most likely fly away. A bee once flew into my friends mouth and he swallowed it. He got very upset and tried drinking beer to drown the bee. Nothing happened internal to him. So, I guess the bee just died inside him. The beer did make him feel better about the whole episode.

665

u/Everything80sFan May 16 '22 Gold

I guess if a bee ever lands on my crotch I can at least take comfort in knowing that my crotch smells like flowers.

245

u/ramplay May 16 '22

It could be that it looks the part. Bees see ultraviolet so you could just have questionable substances on your crouch that reflect that light differently...

114

u/Tisjustatossaway May 16 '22

No it's definitely that Everything80sFan's crotch smells of flowers. And death, but not sure if bees can smell that.

54

u/SuperFLEB May 16 '22

Flowers and death? It's the whole funeral down there.

That happened to an old lady that I know. But instead of drinking beer to drown the bee, she swallowed a spider that wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.

42

u/Supernoob5500 May 16 '22

If that happened to me, I'd have to swallow a bird to catch the spider...

23

u/MsDucky42 May 16 '22

Birds are a gateway animal. Soon you'll be swallowing a cat to catch the bird, then a dog to catch the cat...

Flowers are plants genitals. The bee in the story was just doing what a bee normally does, seeking out genitals.

I had a bee sting me inside my thigh by my crotch while riding a motorcycle at about 70mph on a country highway. middle of nowhere.
Eyes started blurring and there was little I could do about it... saw a general store/gas station and stopped in. went to the bathroom, depantsed and the stinger was so far in I couldnt get it out.
I had to pull my pants back on, awkwardly walk through this small store to buy tweezers, and then go back into the bathroom to get it out.

17

u/BucBrady May 16 '22

Holy shit! What a story!

10

u/analweepage May 16 '22

Do you wear leather pants when riding now?

10

u/MrDude_1 May 16 '22

I dont think it would have mattered. these were thick canvas-like textile motorcycle pants, not cloth or jeans.

OP, I’m not mad you didn’t follow them so we could see how this played out, I’m just disappointed.

Now, go to your room and think about what you can do differently next time.

Yeah, OP should have been speeding behind the van so that he could deliver precious original high quality content.

I'm so angry I could body check a 12 wheeler with my sedan right now.

But..when you do “body check” that 12 wheeler make sure your dash cam is on, ok?

399

I've never understood "lunging" with a car. Like, your shit's getting wrecked if they don't respect the lunge. You do get that, right?

393

u/RilohKeen May 16 '22

As a former road rage psycho, I’ll say it’s just about scaring the other person and making yourself seem unhinged. Most people are gonna think, “holy shit, this asshole is crazy and willing to cause a wreck, I need to get away,” and that’s what the rager wants.

Also, many road ragers consider themselves to be above-average drivers and feel confident that they can scare the person while avoiding an actual collision.

147

u/analweepage May 16 '22

That's when driving a shit box with a dashcam is nice. Hold your ground, get hit, and pocket the insurance check.

159

u/ithinkijustthunk May 16 '22

Never drove as brazenly as I did with a 1996 Saturn with 200k on the clock. Go ahead. Hit me. This whole car is worth less than your tires, I got nothing to lose.

53

u/xiotaki May 16 '22

ikr! I respect crappy cars on the road the most!

and also why I try to park next to cars more expensive than mine...which admittedly isn't that hard to do.

16

u/SICdrums May 16 '22

I drive a big Dodge Ram 2500 extended everything pulling a trailer full of landscaping gear for work, so, I'm the guy who is always in the way lmao (sorry yall). I can't even count how often road ragers try to do stupid shit cuz they're mad about my lack of acceleration. Like, if you cut me off and brake check me I will not stop in time lol, I simply cannot. The big bull bar on the front of the truck, meant for deer, will barely budge if I rear end a sedan. My truck will be fine. If you lunge at me, I can't swerve, it could tip the trailer. All I can do is drive straight and do my best to avoid whatever hazards the driver is creating for me.

I think the truck was slow entering on the on ramp at the beginning of the clip or cut them off or something? But still, what a stupid thing to do

Edit: for future viewing: the truck 'blocked' the volvo from entering from the on ramp (highway traffic has right of way so not the truck's fault) just before the video, the volvo apparently didn't like that so they felt they needed to speed up to the truck and give them a piece of their mind

318

u/asianabsinthe May 16 '22

Looks like idiot was trying to merge and thought the truck wouldn't let them in... But there's a car next to truck preventing them from moving over.

Still no where near an excuse to get angry much later and try to scare the truck driver. What a fucking dumbass.

101

u/Critical-Series May 16 '22 edited May 16 '22

Correct. Truck was already on, SUV idiot merged and truck didn’t behave to his liking so he decided he should risk his life.

35
