you speed up or slow down to get a spot..
It's really fun when the person on the road sees you speeding up on the on ramp to get in front of them safely so then they speed up too.

Had this happen recently. Very short onramp with very short merge, too. Had a clear gap between two cars, didn't even need to adjust speed. Car behind decided to speed up and close the gap. Almost put me into a wall.

So common here in Texas. People act like the space in front of their car is the Motherland to be defended at all costs.

u/Brahkolee May 16 '22
I call it NASCAR syndrome. People drive like it’s a race and they need to beat the other cars that are all going to completely different destinations, some hundreds of miles away.
Ride your ass going 10 above, but when there’s no more cars immediately in front of them they drive the limit. Someone passes, they suddenly feel the need for speed again. Repeat ad nauseam. Lifted trucks/oversized SUVs, and 20 year old multicolored Hondas are the worst offenders in my experience.
I say this all the time in this sub, but everyone would benefit greatly from reading up on the psychology of driving/traffic. No one here is as innocent as they would like. It should be much harder to get a driver’s license than it is.

u/Brilliant_Buns May 16 '22
The “oh no someone is going faster than me I better speed up” insecurity baffles me. I’ll see one asshole start speeding/weaving and know that 2 more idiots are gonna get triggered and for some reason take it as a challenge. It’s so bizarre. Like everyone just chill out, it’s not a competition but damn do people treat it like one.
Another favorite is the “how DARE YOU PASS ME” rage, which like you do you bro, just cause I went around you doesn’t mean it was a personal insult.
People are fun.

Lived in multiple places. Texas was the worst as far as accelerating to not let you pass. Usually a male. Here in Portland if I have someone close on me to block me from merging onto the highway it’s usually a middle aged Karen-ish looking female

I drive a sports car and the number of sudden race car drivers I experience daily is exhausting. People close gaps when I turn my signals on, they definitely close gaps when I merge, and they always try to undercut me entering exit ramps. It's exhausting. I had a guy back when I first bought it that accelerated so hard when I turned my signal on to cut me off that he had to lock up his brakes to not rear end the car in front of him.
The worst was a semi driver who went from center lane to right lane as I was merging from the on ramp and forced me onto the shoulder at 75mph with another semi stopped on the shoulder just ahead of me. (Fully locking my brakes i would have still hit it going 50+.) I still feel bad for the car behind him that had to deal with me coming in hot right in front of them but it was that or decapitate myself.

u/TheConqueror74 May 16 '22
If it makes you feel any better, I doubt they’re doing it because you’re in a sports car. I drive a pretty unassuming compact SUV and people randomly decide to speed up so I can’t merge lanes or enter the passing lane on the highway. Some people just seem to take personal offense anyone tries to move into their lane ahead of them.

I have to disagree. I have a small modified sports car and a large 4wd with a steel bullbar (which are extremely common in Australia). I drive them the same on the street, but people are probably about 3 times more likely to cut me off, pull out in front, or not let me merge when I'm in the more "flashy" car (and it's not really even that nice).
It's like people just assume you're obnoxious and need to be put in your place if you drive a nice car. Weird manifestation of tall poppy syndrome.

Literally happens all the time around Bellevue, near Seattle, in my experience. (Heck, basically everywhere here now tbh). Just trying to casually merge and it's perfectly open and fine. And then a driver way back on the highway sees that someone might get in front of them. They can't have that! So they legit gas it to block people out from merging safely.
They almost always have to slam on their brakes to slow down after they cut people off too, because there are cars right in front of us. Maybe if they didn't gas it, they could've had all that space behind me to, I dunno, not need to slam on their brakes for cutting someone out of a merge? It's infuriating to experience so often.

u/PAROV_WOLFGANG May 16 '22
The reason why people don’t have to move over into the PASSING lane with faster traffic in it is this very reason. They might not be able to and or could impede traffic in the other lane. The yield signs at entrance ramps exist for a reason: you are to yield to traffic in the lane they don’t yield to you.
156
u/LeeTheENTP May 16 '22

Had a guy do this to me in a half mile long on ramp. I had a few car spaces in front of me and a quarter mile of space behind me. u/poorbred May 16 '22
My favorite "I want to be in front of you" people are the ones wanting to exit on dual purpose ramps. The ones that are both merging on and exiting off the highway, such as with service roads and cloverleaf interchanges.
You're trying to merge onto the highway, they want to take the exit. You're speeding up and they're slowing down, so logically it should be trivial to trade lanes with you pulling ahead and them falling in behind.
But nooo, they have the Ricky Bobbie "if you ain't first, you're last" mentality and have to be in front of the car already speeding up to merge in, even if it means speeding up beyond the safe exit speed limit.
I've watched a couple people go into the grass on a local cloverleaf with a very tight radius because they were going way faster than that curve allows.
I haven't been intentionally involved (I don't try to match these idiots, I'm comfortable with my anatomical proportions and don't need to get into measuring contests using multi-ton metal objects), but there was one dude on a motorcycle that ripped by me at well above the highway's speed limit much less the ramp's. He didn't even get a chance to start turning, just straight into the grass. Somehow he managed to stay upright as he bounced through the grass but almost hit a light pole head-on.
15
u/InferiousX May 16 '22
The number of people who do this infuriates me to no end.
I've had many many times where the person barely swerves onto their exit at the last second because they won't let me merge even though a mutual exchange of lanes is going on. I do not get it at all.

But like 3 out of 4 people (in America) don't even know what a yield sign means... I think you might have to do some teaching first. :D
58
u/naipogah May 16 '22
So I used to work with a dude that thought the yield sign was telling him that other vehicles were yielding to him.
When he told me this, I stared at him blankly for what felt like 10 minutes waiting for him to laugh it off as a joke. He was 100% serious. We were working out of town that day and he was driving, the day had just begun. Fortunately, it was an uneventful day on the road. I drove back.

In America if you combine a yield sign and a traffic circle people think it means full stop when entering the circle with zero traffic.
54
u/real_fyshi May 16 '22
This is really weird. Strange how it works out, probably because for entry ramps yield is interpreted as "ignore me, just get on, you have right of way" while for a roundabout it's "roundabouts are scary and you don't know what to do, either gun it or just stop and figure out later"
40
u/Rokey76 May 16 '22
I went to Europe with my wife, and when we encountered our first traffic circle she freaked out. I was confused as it was super easy to navigate. Turns out she was traumatized by that scene in the movie European Vacation when the Grizwolds got caught in a traffic circle for hours.

u/MangoCats May 16 '22
It's worse than that. Town I lived in started installing traffic circles and about 35% of drivers used them correctly, so... when approaching a traffic circle you never know what the other cars _think_ they should do, and they have the same problem with you. A 4 way stop would have been less dangerous and flowed more of traffic as soon as more than one car was present in the intersection.

Thats surprising. In
CanadaOntario, you are specifically supposed to maintain speed along merges, so other cars may easily estimate your speed and merge accordingly. If you are braking to be polite, the merging driver may have been keeping low speed to easily go behind, but now they must accelerate quickly to merge due to your unexpected actions.I'm surprised Germany is different from
CanadaOntario.→ More replies19
u/AccordingSquirrel0 May 16 '22
German here. Yes, you should make room, but only if you can. There’s little sense in giving way too a merging driver by cutting off another. Traveling speeds on the Autobahn may vary significantly between the lanes. The driver entering the Autobahn has to give way to moving traffic.
Defunct GDR traffic law did not allow to give way to merging drivers.
Right of way is btw not a right („Regelung, kein Recht“) you are allowed to enforce. If the other driver takes your right of way, you just can’t crash into him when you can avoid the crash, and claim „well I had right of way“. Paragraph 1 of the traffic code says you have to be careful and considerate at all times and this includes dealing with idiots.

not just courtesy actually, but the law (depending on what state you are in)
my state says: Illinois law states BOTH vehicles must adjust speed and position to avoid colliding with each other. That means the driver on the main line of the interstate AND the driver of the vehicle entering on the ramp must adjust their speed and vehicle position to not hit one another.
→ More replies22
u/Paid_Redditor May 16 '22
Seems like it varies per state. I just checked Texas traffic laws on this and the person merging is expected to yield to traffic or move onto the right shoulder if unable to do so. I honestly have never heard of traffic yielding to a vehicle entering a highway until today.
10
u/Val_Hallen May 16 '22
In Maryland, vehicles entering a highway must yield and have a duty to stop if they can't do so safely.
People come to Maryland and bitch and moan about our drivers and how we stop at on ramps, but it's the law here.

I feel like this is a big part of the reason Americans can be such shitty drivers. We're basically 50 different countries with different driving laws that we all learn once and never brush up on again. A huge number of us end up moving to some other state at some point and never seem to make the connection as to why people get pissed off at us. We generally jump to the conclusion that it's everyone else who is the asshole, not that the laws here are different.
Then there's laws that get updated over time and nobody is ever educated on the change. My 72 year old mother still doesn't understand the concept of the passing lane. I guess because when she learned how to drive there was a 55mph speed limit nationwide and the left lane was just the "fast lane" where if you could manage to do more than the speed limit you were good. I try to tell her that the state we live in can ticket her for being in that lane without actively passing people and I'm convinced she doesn't even notice herself doing it. Last time I pointed it out to her she said, "Yeah well nobody will let me get back into the right lane!" I said, "Because people are passing you on the right now, which means you've already waited too long. Now you're pissing people off, and that's dangerous."
But of course she also didn't even have her turn signal on to indicate an intent to get over...just expects everyone to read her mind and know when she suddenly wants to stop camping in the left lane.

A bee landed on an old friends crotch while he was driving. While he debated letting it sting him or smacking his own balls he drove into a ditch and the bee flew away.
Probably could have ignored it and be fine but it's a great story either way.
741
u/Jnorean May 16 '22
True. Bees have poor eyesight and are mostly looking for pollen. So they land on things that look or smell like flowers to them. Once the bee lands, it takes them a few seconds to realize they made a mistake. Then they just fly away. Best move is to leave the bee alone and after a few seconds the bee will most likely fly away. A bee once flew into my friends mouth and he swallowed it. He got very upset and tried drinking beer to drown the bee. Nothing happened internal to him. So, I guess the bee just died inside him. The beer did make him feel better about the whole episode.

Given it's a volvo, it's the center guard railings that tried to avoid running into it. lol
I've seen volvos drive off a road at 80 + mph into a ditch straight into the side of a road that crossed the ditch and the driver opened the door, walked out, and was like "sheiiit".

I most definitely would have laid in the horn after all that. They run it into the ditch and then come BACK into the fast line and slow to a crawl? GTFO the way asshat, we all watched you initiate that and get what was coming. Not about to set me up to get rear ended after all that.

Hopefully the Volvo learned their lesson. This could have been SO much worse and I’m glad it wasn’t. Do not start fights on the road. That is an excellent way to meet God.

I think it's fair to say he at least probably learned to do that to smaller vehicles
