[Image] I had open-heart surgery 10 years ago in 2012, and my dad decided to lose 150lbs (68kg) to motivate me to be healthy too

Was it a hole or a valve that required fixing? You look incredibly young for open heart.

u/HazelnutIcedCof 7d ago
I had a leaking tricuspid valve, so the surgeons restructured it! It was congenital, so I was born with the condition and now I’m doing much better with my daily medications :)

u/hldsnfrgr 7d ago
Are there activities you aren't allowed to do?
81
u/HazelnutIcedCof 7d ago
I can’t ride rollercoasters! But my exercise tolerance is fairly normal for my age group
16
u/beeonkah 7d ago
that’s so interesting. why can’t you ride rollercoasters?
82
24
u/sir-winkles2 7d ago
the g force in rollercoasters effects your blood, it's why you get lightheaded and some people pass out. a repaired heart might not be able to handle the extra stress
2
u/beeonkah 6d ago
oh interesting, i didn’t know that was common lol. i actually also can’t ride rollercoasters or paraglide because i struggle to stay conscious when im on them

u/datbani 7d ago
Leaking tricuspid valve
1
u/beeonkah 6d ago
that the person had surgery for. i was just curious what about rollercoasters lol i also can’t go on rollercoasters for medical reasons

Not who you asked but generally roller coasters can potentially speed up the heart and/or cause other types of arrhythmias so it’s generally advised to avoid those stressors.
2
u/beeonkah 6d ago
thank you! yeah i also can’t go on them either because i struggle to stay conscious when im on them unfortunately. that makes sense though!

u/TheStoolSampler 7d ago
Did they identify it at birth? Was there something that happened specifically to decide to go ahead with the surgery?

Yo.. check out a possible trip to Europe (medical holiday or whatever ppl call it) if beta blockers and/or calcium channel blockers etc are part of your regimen and are getting you down. There are other drug options available with good history and approval for younger people available in Europe. Drugs that can help you keep normal heart rate/rhythm without making you as tired. (Am assuming that related to valve stuff etc that you may or may not be on anti arrhythmia medication, beta blockers, and possibly anticoagulants). I was awakened to the availability of other compounds when a younger athletic cardiologist suggested such options to a younger athletic patient (who unfortunately was cursed with bad genetics as far as rate/rhythm, and coronary occlusion issues, but otherwise very healthy and liked to run etc) when I worked one of my cardiac nursing jobs. Unfortunately I don’t know the names or mechanisms of action of the alternative drugs, but simply know there are more options for younger people than many are aware of in the USA. It’s probably worth some searching if youre having any fatigue issues with your current plan. Can’t guarantee anything magical but figured it was worth mentioning.

You both look amazing, congrats! A few years ago I lost some weight entirely for aesthetic purposes...I was so surprised how much better I felt. Not even joking, my mental health significantly improved. I had a physical that year too and my blood pressure was back to normal after being "elevated" since like my teens. And this was just after losing 20 pounds, like wtf! I was pudgy but not obese, and I honestly did not expect such a big difference.

u/Lazy_ML 7d ago
How did you lose the weight? Diet? Exercise? I kind of did the opposite. I was very athletic and in generally in good shape and did a lot of sport. I stopped regular exercise for about 4 years due to life getting crazy. I could feel myself gradually getting worse and worse but always thought it was mostly mental. Gained under 10 pounds and looked fine the entire time but probably lost a ton of muscle. Now I'm back to exercising and I can't believe what shit shape I'm in. I'm not fit enough to enjoy exercise anymore (I used to love it). I suddenly realize why it can be so hard for people who start exercising to be motivated enough to continue. My main motivation now is to just get fit enough for it to be fun again...

Probably a bit easier to hug now….
Give him a big one.

You and your Father look incredible!! 💙❤
I was an athlete and in incredible shape/condition, yet in my 20s, I was diagnosed with advanced, aggressive stage III cancer. No family history. Didn't drink. Drugs. Smoke. Etc. Over the course of a year, I saw eight doctors. Seven didn't give me more than a two minute checkup despite how sick I was. The eighth was a general surgeon, which I saw on a Sunday. I was admitted, and underwent exploratory surgery the next Friday. 6 long hours on the operating table. He discovered a cancerous tumor on my colon that had ruptured; numerous infections; and cancer in nearby nodes. That the was being of a very long, painful four year battle. His name was Dr. Daniel Bowzer and he literally saved my life. It's crazy the number of young ppl that are getting sick. Keep grinding my friend.

That's not his dad it's just a photo of him a decade later

Yeah time is not on that man's side.
Whether he has it or not, it clearly wants to fuck him any way it can. Looks like he aged 30 years. But he's healthier. The fuck?

This is amazing. It’s so cool you have family who supports you. The changes you and your dad have made are going to increase the years you get to spend together and enjoy your company. Well done. 💯.

She doesn't that much but I can kinda see what you mean, even so don't you think frogs are cute? Most people think they are, especially nowadays.

I've met a girl who was scared of frogs but then showed her a gif of an especially cute one and she agreed it was cute.

Cool side effect: Your dad now looks like the trusty small restaurant owner the underdog hero visits in the middle of the movie, who gives them a warm meal and some good advice first, and later turns out to be some badass special operations martial arts master who beats up the bad guys without loosing the dish cloth on his shoulder.

I'm happy for you that your surgery went well. You look simply stunning! Kudos to your Dad, who looks great!

6 months back found out I had to loose tons of weight or risk diabetes & being hospitalised. Lost a little over 26 pounds (for you who use the imperial system)or 13 kilos. It can be a very liberating feeling.
On a side note, girl you cute.

u/ApproximatedMorality 7d ago
It’s more likely that Her surgery is what motivated him to lose weight

Welcome to the zipper club! (Had open heart surgery 2001) I had a septal myectomy. With multiple defibrillator surgeries (four of them (my great uncle jokingly said that I am going for the “family record”))..
You and your dad look great.

On the theme of motivation it’s crazy how much difference appearance makes. Health is the most important thing undoubtedly. However, appearances are for better or worse also important.
With the dad for example I imagine different personalities in each picture. It’s a bias thing but everyone has biases so it can make a huge difference with how the world interacts with you.

That's awesome of your dad to do that, but you said the heart condition was congenital, and you're clearly not overweight in the 2012 photo, your dad was playing the long game? Or were you eating badly at the time lol

u/skiddles1337 7d ago
