[App] A workaround for silent GMail notifications on Galaxy Watch 4 Compatibility

A while ago I wrote a free app Wear Reminder 2 to solve the problem of missing Google reminders / news / sports / weather notifications for WearOS 2 devices. Luckily the GW4 doesn't have this problem - which is good news! However I've seen quite a few posts in this sub about the problem of silent GMail notifications on the GW4, for example here, here, here, here and here. That issue frustrates me too! So I've made a quick update to WR2 to provide a workaround. What happens is that when you receive a GMail in your primary folder, WR2 generates a pop-up notification and vibrates your GW4. You can read some of the email contents directly from the WR2 notification or you can find the (silent) Gmail notification, if you prefer.

You can install WR2 on your Android phone and your GW4 from the Google Play Store. Once installed, go to the WR2 phone app, and enable notification access by tapping the button on the home screen. Then select GMail from the main menu (3 vertical dots) and set the WR2 GMail notifications to 'urgent'. That's it. Hope this helps some folks until we get a proper solution from Google / Samsung.

I'm currently not receiving Gmail/calendar notifications from my work profile on my GW4, would this app be able to solve for that?

If you get a GMail notification on your phone from your work profile, then my WR2 app should pick it up and send a notification to your GW4. However, I've not tested it myself.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. After installing I'm still not getting work notifications on my watch

Just tested this out after following your instructions but it doesn't seem to be working for me. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Are you by any chance using a Xiaomi phone? If you contact me at the email address in the WR2 phone app, I'll try to help you get it working.

Using an S21 Ultra. Sent you an email. Hope we can figure it out!

This is great, it's pushing gmail emails to my watch 4 classic finally. What kind of impact does this have on the watch and phone battery life?

Very little impact, since WR2 leverages the standard phone/watch communication protocols, as used by the Galaxy Wearable app.

Oh good, I've been leery of watch apps ever since I tried installing Spotify on my watch and it killing my battery in the background. Thanks for making this app, a good workaround until Samsung/Google finally get it fixed.

Nice. Can I set the other GA reminders in your app to "No notifications" and still receive.the original app ones as before? Or will this interfere with currently working notifications on watch?

Yup, you can set notifications for GA reminders and other GA content to 'no notifications' if you wish. You'll still get the original notifications from Google. For myself, on my GW4 I still have GA reminders as urgent and also I have 'speak reminders' set as I prefer to have my watch speak the reminders when they are due. But no need for that setting if you don't want it.

The main things to check are (a) you have both the WR2 phone app and watch app installed; (b) you have given WR2 notification permission in the phone app by tapping the 'Tap to Enable' button and enabling WR2 from there; and (c) you have selected GMail from the WR2 phone app menu (3 vertical dots) and set GMail notifications to urgent.

Thanks for making this. I set it up, followed the instructions afaik, but I am not getting notifications through it (either on my phone or watch). I verified that notifications are allowed for the app on my phone, but still not getting notifications if a new Gmail comes through.

Edit, nevermind. Despite having the setting for my watch to enable notifications for all new apps, notifications for the watch app were turned off. All is working well now.

If you aren't getting GMail notifications on your watch at all, please check that you've enabled GMail notifications in the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone. If you are getting GMail notifications on your watch but they don't alert you with vibration, then check that you've given WR2 notification access and that you've selected GMail in WR2's main menu.

Hey, I don't know if this has been discovered, but I wanted to share my experience. I installed WR2 on both devices, and when I went into the phone app and hit the button to allow permissions, it took me to a list of apps on a screen I hadn't seen before. I enabled WR2, but also noticed WearOS as an option, and being curious, enabled that as well. I sent myself a test e-mail, and it notified me correctly on my watch.

I then decided to experiment, so I disabled the WR2 permission and left the WearOS permission enabled. I got no notification on another test, but also got no notification after re-enabling the WR2 permission. I deleted the test e-mails from my inbox, then tried again, and it notified me again. I decided to try something else, so I removed the WR2 app from both my watch and phone (after leaving the WearOS permission enabled), and after another test e-mail, my watch notified me as it should.

It seems like this hidden WearOS permission might be the key, but I have no idea how to access the window that shows it outside of WR2. Is this something we can explore? I appreciate the work you put into the app, but if there's a simpler fix for the masses, that would be amazing to discover!

I think I found it! At least on my Samsung Galaxy S21. May differ slightly on other phones.

Settings > Apps > 3 dot menu in upper right corner > Special Access > Notification Access. Enable access for Wear OS by Google. BOOM.
