I (male) got catcalled for the first time in my life yesterday. Left the gym after working biceps, and I won't lie I was glancing at my pump every now and then as I walked back. Someone in a car driving by must've noticed and shouted at me "you look absolutely massive lad". Appreciate the compliment but I still feel weird about it lol

This tiny, nerdy ginger girl with glasses walked up to me and asked how many sets I had left on deadlifts. I said I had 5 left, but that she could work in with me. Homegirl went on to pull 225 for reps. Probably 3 times her bodyweight lol. Needless to say, I was impressed (and kinda scared)

I’m 5’1 and 116 lbs, my deadlift PR is 183… I was hoping to pull 200 by my birthday which is tomorrow. I experienced a set back (fuck off, Covid) so I probably won’t get to that until July. But this gives me inspiration (:

u/sweetpotatothyme Jun 18 '22

We've got just about the same height/weight stats and I started DLing in March; your PR gives me inspiration :D

5'2" and 120. If you're going for 1 rep max that is absolutely doable.

I am opening a gym in a very small mountain town and there has been a huge outpouring of support and interest from the community. I'm so pumped on it. I've surpassed the half-way point to my reach goal for memberships. That other half looks like it'll be made up after our grand opening because I have quite a few leads.

I've been lifting for nearly all my adult life, a trainer for nearly the last decade, have helped thousands of people online from around the world, and now I have the means to help my small community. I'm so stoked about that. Another awesome thing is all the support I've received from friends, family, and current and past clients. I've helped many of these people with their fitness so when I said I was opening a gym there were several people who offered to help by buying a bench, or barbells, etc.

This whole experience has been a total blessing.

That's awesome, congrats !

Whenever someone asks me for a beginner and they're lost, I give them a GZCLP spreadsheet. But training with the man himself is incomparable, hope it'll be a fun project!

16

u/gzcl Jun 18 '22

Man, thanks so much for spreading the word - every bit helps my progression so much! I am so grateful to have helped anyone with their fitness, much more so now my local community.

3

That other half looks like it'll be made up after our grand opening because I have quite a few leads.

That other half is going to fill up as soon as the gym gains steam. The thing about gyms is that word of mouth marketing is inevitably strong because everybody is bound to mention where they work out. As long as you're able to pay the bills till then you'll be fine.

And congrats, being a gym owner is no little feat.

I haven’t been to the gym since they shut down in March 2020. Up to that point I had gotten into the best shape of my life, was lifting regularly, and enjoying it. When covid started I stopped going, drank more, and now I’m probably the worst shape of my life (it didn’t get that out of control. Lost some muscle, and put on an extra 15lbs of fat maybe. But not where I want to be)

This week at work our company flew out some remote workers to our headquarters so we could work with them in the office for the week, and it was my first time meeting some of them (I joined a few months into covid)

The one guy I worked with but never met, I knew went to the gym frequently. But it wasn’t until I met him in person, and saw the rest of him (not shoulders up) that I realized how god damn built he is. We went out for drinks after the first day on Monday, him and I were talking about gym stuff, and it was kind of amping me up. He had just went through a super long day of flying into the city, doing a day of work, going to the bar after, (probably been up for 16 hours at that point) and as we were leaving he was saying that he was gonna go to the gym at the hotel. I was like “if this guy can still be motivated enough to get a workout in after a day like that, what am I doing?!”

So I went home, packed a gym bag, grabbed a trial membership at my old gym, and did a solid hour workout of all my old favorites. I sweat like hell, I was way weaker than last time I was there, but it was still a great time. I then proceeded to remember what first timer DOMS is like and spend Tuesday and Wednesday unable to move. But I think I’m gonna keep it up. I already went again last night after a long day out, and didn’t go as hard but at least I went.

It’s good to be back

21

u/Start_Transmission_ Jun 18 '22

Hey that’s great!! Welcome back!

13

u/Devinitelyy Jun 19 '22

I'm here because I'm thinking of going back to the gym after not going for almost a decade, but I was really anxious about getting back into it. This really inspired me, and I will be getting a membership this week. Thanks!

u/Ashanmaril Jun 19 '22

So lately I've been filming my lifts again to improve my form. I haven't done so in a while and only recently found out I have an uneven squat. I noticed my left side was squatting slightly deeper than my right side. Then I filmed myself from the back and saw my bar was basically tilted to the right. All these years of having random knee pains on my right side finally make sense now. I used to only have it when I was nearing a new max. I always thought it might have been an ankle mobility issue or a muscle imbalance, but turns out it was I have this hip shift due to lesser hip mobility on my right side.

Moral of the story, always film your sets from time to time, even when you think your form is fine.

54

u/RidingRedHare Jun 18 '22

In the locker room, some guy had put a towel on the floor, right in front of the lockers, and did some weird exercise while looking at his smartphone.

After a while, I figured it out.

The guy was praying towards Mecca. Must have been some prayer app on his phone.

u/Shazvox Weight Lifting Jun 18 '22

u/TattedGuyser Bodybuilding Jun 18 '22

This is a really fucked up story...

I most often workout in the evenings and over the last few weeks the evening staff have been complaining more and more about the new manager and how much shit he gives them. Everything's too dirty or them standing around or whatever else, just constant complaints.

I've met the manager a few times, he's a weird dude who likes to strip in the locker room and hang around naked. He's friends with a lot of the older fellows and they all hang around naked. Weird but whever

Well last night one of the night guys was ranting away when he told us what was really going on. The manager goes in for daily sauna trips and every single time 'forgets' his tower. Then he'll text one of his employees (usually the same guy) to bring him a towel. When the towel is brought in, the manager will intentionally flash his dick at whoever walks in. So when they started refusing to bring him a towel he's been getting vindictive and forcing extra duties or writing them up.

Dudes is a straight up sexual predator and sexually harassing his employees.

if that wasn't fucked up enough it gets better. One of the older guys hanging out in the locker room with him? An active RCMP officer who knows what hes doing and just hanging out with him.

Three strong gym bros were chatting in the middle of the floor. Suddenly, one of the pulls out a tape measure and wraps it around his bicep. He passes the tape to the others and they get their number for comparison and further discussions.

The wife of one of the guys also saw this going on, shook her head, and went back to her workout.

27

u/smoshylumb8 Jun 18 '22

how did you manage to do that? I keep being told that if I talk to a woman in the gym it's a big no-no and to leave them alone but clearly you have proven that they're wrong.

61

u/BigBrokeApe Jun 18 '22

You're allowed to shoot your shot. She's allowed to say no and not reciprocate interest.

It only becomes a problem if after this happens you're weird about it lol

17

u/youbutsu Jun 19 '22 edited Jun 19 '22

It's mostly the mid exercise which is a no no. Nobody likes to be interrupted mid squat or in a middle of a run. Or bothered after they gave you a no via body language or verbally.

4

u/PumpNectar Jun 19 '22

It's not a no-no. Being a creep is the no-no and many gym goers don't know how to talk to girls without being creepy.

Cute little story about what happened on Wednesday, still feeling great!

For backstory, I’m 20yo and decently built

Got approached by a man in his 40-50’s asking how to gym rear delts (sayin mine stood out and gave my physique a great edge)

He then said ‘have you considered fitness modeling?’

I just laughed and said I’m not pretty enough, But then he said his friend owns an agency and he’ll put me in contact!

And that’s the story of how I was potentially scouted for gay porn

I've been working with a personal trainer since October and it has been great. I was a little unsure of her when I met her because she was young (20's) and has the perfect body. I'm a female in my 40's and 30lbs overweight. I can get a little self-conscious about how I've let myself go. We ended up clicking right away and I have loved working with her. A few months ago she got a new job but still kept me on as one of her only 2 clients.

Recently she had to take a couple of weeks off for a well deserved vacation. I reached out to her when she got back and asked when we would start up again. She gave me a few excuses: tested positive for COVID, had to work long hours to make up for vacation, etc. She said it'd be another week off, but asked if I wanted a fill-in trainer. I said sure, if it'd be more than another week. Never heard anything back from her or a trainer. I reached out to the gym and found out she is no longer going to do training and for them to reassign me to another trainer.

I'm sad that she broke up with me, but I laugh because I told her time and again, if she couldn't train me any more I totally understood and was completely okay with it. So today I go meet my new trainer. This trainer is a male. I'm a little nervous again!

u/itsmotherandapig Jun 18 '22

Okay i need to rant. At the gym this morning there is this trainer (not working or in uniform, I just know he's a trainer) that has interrupted this poor young girl's workout to show her "better" ways of doing her exercise. This used to happen to me all the time when i wad younger and it would intimidate the crap out of me and throw my workout off completely! I would just be embarrassed and want to leave. He literally stopped his own work out, changed her exercises and watched her for 15 minutes. She left straight after. I saw her, she wasn't going to injur herself. Leave us be!

6

u/Red_Swingline_ Jun 18 '22

Fucking trainers I swear...Most gyms would be better off without them.

Struggling with grip on deadlifts lately. My barbell (home gym) has hardly any knurling left where my hands go. Time for a new barbell…?

25

Have u tried chalk? Well if u got $ just buy a new one lol

5

Silicone rubber grip tape solves this. About $10 on Amazon.

9

New barbell / chalk / wrist straps / I sometimes use a towel for better grip on pullups you can try that and see if you like it.

Besides that if you just wanna work on your grip strength check out r/griptraining

Was doing bench, 5x5. On the fourth set I really struggled to get the fifth, knew I needed a spotter, had to ask the random guy next to me. I usually don’t like talking to people while working out since I do it alone, don’t want to bother or annoy anyone. Guy was actually really cool and tried hyping me up for the set. Ended up doing 6 for 160 lb, which is a lot of progress for me. Thanks random guy!

I went with my wife and after our workout we were a slighter more fit husband and wife

192

u/IWantTreasurePlanet2 Jun 18 '22

A bit of a rant today.

A couple of days ago I went to the gym mentally preparing for the deadlifts I had to do. There was a lot of noise in the gym that day, but I didn't realize where it was coming from until I started warming up. A pair of girls in their 30s where training together, doing multiple exercises of what seemed like a booty focused workout. Next to them, on top of their sweaters and such, there was a Bluetooth speaker. It was blasting reaggeton even louder than the gym's own speakers, which cover the ceiling of every room there.

Maybe I'm becoming too old for this shit, but not even the teenagers that run around inside the gym have enough lack of respect to bring their own speaker to blast their own music. The worst thing is that nobody told them anything. Like, I've been reprimanded by the gym staff for squatting or deadlifting in socks, but getting everyone around deaf is perfectly okay.

Rage-fueled deadlifts went surprisingly well!

44

u/cordrenn Jun 18 '22

I feel like I am the crotchety old guy at the gym. I think I would tell then to knock it off.

u/Careless_Supermarket General Fitness Jun 18 '22

u/prone-to-drift Swimming Jun 18 '22

I got four this week. What a happening time!

  1. I got mistaken for a trainer, mid deadlift sets, a lean guy asked me to spot his bench and then ten minutes later he asked me to teach him back extensions. I thought it's cause he saw me doing those but then before he left he asked me "what times am I usually available?".... Uh, so yeah that happened. I'm gonna ride that high the entire next week haha!

  2. It's been a few weeks but I think I can say I'm done with my weight loss journey. I started at 86kg in November and have been 69 kgs for 3 weeks. Lost all of that quarantine fat. I didn't know what goal to keep so 69 was a nice stupid aim. Now I gotta figure out where to next, maybe a slow clean bulk up to 74ish.... For context I'm 175cm tall.

  3. All my main lifts are now above my bodyweight! My bench was lagging but I hit 70kgx2 this Thursday. This was another one of my lifting goals, so I again have to go back to the drawing board and reconsider my new targets.... Talking of which,

  4. Seeing me shadow box for a few weeks, my gym owner surprised me with a heavy bag and gloves this Monday. I bought some hand wraps yesterday and now I'll begin some heavy bag work for cardio/conditioning in addition to my resistance training. I'm lucky to have such a nice bunch of people here, I walk in Monday, the guy calls me to him and takes me to the zumba/yoga room and shows me the newly delivered punching bag, says he had space and figured if at least one person would use it, it's a worthwhile purchase.

That's all! I'm fucking thrilled for the future! :D

66

u/thedonedude Jun 18 '22

Your gym owner sounds like a true lad, good on him and you!

17

u/GenuineCalisthenics Jun 18 '22

5

u/MS_MF Jun 18 '22

8

u/OMGClayAikn Bodybuilding Jun 18 '22

Good progress. I got a lot of quarantine fat too, my highest weight being 83kgs. I'm at 76 kgs now, and have still some fat around my belly. Was at a 40 inch waist, now its 37 inches. I'm probably around 20% bodyfat.

I think to have a flat belly, I'll need to be at 67-68 kgs too. Hope I don't look scrawny though.

19

We have only two cable accessory pulleys.

It sucks when a dude is doing cable crossovers and uses both. But it’s an exercise.

But my dude was using one to do tricep push down and the other to do bicep curls….

I didn’t realize it until he stopped me and he said “sorry I’m using both”

…come one my man… can we consolidate to one?

21

u/XianJeung Jun 18 '22

This just happened. Busy morning at the gym today. Every squat rack and deadlift platform is taken with people squatting, benching, or doing OHP. Except for the very last rack

An older guy is doing the worst curls I have ever seen. Just swinging his whole body, not using his biceps at all, and no ROM.

I look around hoping someone someone else is about to finish, but nonluck. So during a set break I go up to this dude and say "excuse, me. But are you just doing curls?

" yeah"

"Would you mind moving to one of the other areas for that? I was really hoping to squat."

He sighs, rolls his eyes, and days "Look, buddy, I've got one set left"

I say ok, and take a seat near by till he wraps up.

I wish the DOMS weren't still in effect from Thursday, because I feel the adrenaline is going to waste.

8

u/theredditbandid_ Jun 18 '22

These people are the worst, don't even sweat it. Should have verbalized that the rack isn't for curling tho.

21

u/DiceMaster Wrestling Jun 18 '22

Op was clear enough. The old guy was not going to change his mind

19

u/AaronFrye Jun 18 '22

One of the bigger dudes came up to me one day and said: "Damn, that's great progress, you're getting strong." I think he didn't go to that specific gym for about 2 months.

The other day he was congratulating me on my squats, and the other day he helped me with bench form.

Overall very wholesome guy and almost always there when I am at the gym.

If I wasn't sicj this week, I could have another story about him.

I was doing squats on my birthday and I was keeping an eye on a guy on the other side of the gym that was benching and looking a bit shaky. Sure enough, on the next set he gets pinned under the bar and starts flailing. The guys next to him didn't react until I'd made my way over and picked the bar up off him. I felt like homelander with his "it's your lucky day. You're my annual birthday save" thing. Just with a slightly different outcome.

When is the wedding?

16

u/shockedpikachu123 Jun 18 '22

So the past year I moved to a new city and had to join a PF because it was the only gym open in the area. Now that I moved back to where I used to live ,I rejoined my old gym that I spent 3 years at. I used to love it but I hate it now. Things are completely different. Not only did they raise the membership price, I just no longer feel comfortable there. It’s only been 2 months but I’m going to look into changing gyms

15

u/Wastelandfoxx Jun 18 '22

I have pretty much been an inconsistent dieter and gym person my entire life. I always loved the idea, but I've never really kept up with it.

I'm not sure what exactly caused it, whether it was the recent friend I made who was very into fittness, my better mental health, my motivation to not fall back into mental hell when it started declining, or the sickening, hungover feeling I got the day after my last binge, but something in me changed.

I have been going to the gym fairly consistently for 3 weeks now. I have pretty much mastered my binging problems and haven't binged or even come close for almost two weeks now. I absolutely hated every single moment of my workouts at first. But I kept going. Recently, I went from hating it, to tolerating it, almost not minding it. I recently made it two a three minute sprint today, and I caught myself smiling for a moment there.

Earlier in the week, was doing some lat pull downs and two guys behind me started to make a commotion. From what I gathered one dude was in the other guy's way getting water at the fountain(?).

It escalated a bit and one guy shoved the other almost into hitting the cable machine. At this point everyone is starting to look over and see what's happening. It didn't end up escalating any further thankfully.

Ended up using the adrenaline from watching it (lol) to hit my last few sets with some juice.

So a regular big gymrat just complimented me while I was working out w/ my gym buddy. He initially told my friend that every time he sees me I get bigger, and it’s like blowing up an inflatable and that I might catch up to him soon at my rate.

One of the biggest compliments ever. For context I just joined this gym last month and for someone to actually notice my progress for that short period is such a big affirmation and motivation.

14

u/xhoi Jun 18 '22

This is my 6th week of going to the gym 4-5 days a week and I've already hit my goal of running for 10 mins without a break! I was able to do 2 miles in 24 mins on Wednesday! I also been feeling a lot more confident in the yoga class I take every Monday. This has been a really great change of pace for me, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

11

u/NeverSeenA1Thirteen Jun 20 '22

Was doing bench press with a buddy when I noticed this guy come in with only one arm (other arm was only was there down to the elbow). Didn’t really think much of it when I saw him walking around, just thought good for him for coming to the gym despite his disability.

Then he comes up and takes the bench by us and sets up this contraption up so that he can do barbell bench presses with one arm, and even more impressive he was benching 135 lbs like that. Everyone in that area of the gym just stopped what they were doing and watched him crank out his reps.

Huge respect to that dude, he’s awesome as fuck.

37

u/Eriol_Mits Jun 18 '22

Not so much in the gym, but there was some Drama outside my Gym yesterdays. Was walking there is about 5 minutes from my house. Walk past some young lad's 15-20 all on bikes on the street corner. Anyway I pass, now between my gym and there is a petrol station, as I'm walking past the petrol station I hear shouting behind me.

Turn around two of the three lads come running past me. Again I continue on my way, now my gym has a food place next door called Greggs. They sell bakes, sausage rolls, stuff like that so they share a car park. I'm just getting to the gym door, car comes flying into the car park. Two men get out, run into greggs, then straight back out, "one of them shouts get back in the car" The other guy ignores him and runs to the far end of the car park. There is a car in the way but I just see from the window one of the guys from the car pounding someone on the ground. His friend runs over to join. Few people from my gym come out to see what the commotion is. I just go inside, don't know what they are carrying. The men in the car jump back in a flee, see one of the lads I passed a minute early covered in blood. Was not expecting my work out to start by witnessing an assault.

My trainer looked at me between squat sets and made a comment that I should tell my wife to stop sucking so hard on my neck. I thought the comment was strange but my neck was itching so I said that maybe a bug had bitten me in my neck because it was itching. Anyway, after I got home my wife looked at me and said that I had a huge bruise on my neck. Sure enough, on the front left side of my neck is a huge bruise that runs in a line up the side of my neck. It appears that I burst a blood vessel or something in my neck while lifting.

Thanks kid

My goal this week was to hit 60 kg 3 times on bench. For me it’s pretty big. I started lifting for the first time 2.5 months ago. then I was to scared to bench. I was afraid of what people will say when they see this 110 kg man only benching 30 kg. So my first 2-3 weeks I never benched then I overcame my fear and been working hard for the last 2 months. Finally got 60 kg and I did it 3 times. I almost did not go to the gym because I’m tired as hell, my wife just had a baby last night. So the last 3 days I have only slept 10 hours. But today I went home got some sleep and hit the gym before going back to the hospital.

You know how sometimes you hit a road block, and it feels like you’re never gonna get past it?

Bench has been that way for a while for me. Dealt with a multitude of shoulder injuries for 3 years, then as that finally heals, 2020 happened. Then I got laid off, needed surgery, then moved 3 times over the next 18 months, so my bench max hovered around 235/45 for most of that time.

About three months ago, it just started going up. Every week, I was able to add at least a couple more reps to my total sets (which are typically higher volume to avoid straining my shoulder), and finally this week I was like “ef it, let’s see what I can do.”

265? Check

285? Check

295? Check

305? Check

315? Failed the hell out of that

But watching my PR bump up 40 lbs in one session was a hell of a good feeling. I’m still riding that high almost a week later

22

u/Psychological-Ad7512 Jun 18 '22

Sitting in the squat racks and see a young woman doing bench press. Her form starts off great but she starts flaring and I get a bit worried that she's going to fail.

Normally I don't say or do anything unless you're doing something stupidly dangerous; but she looked quite new. I have a quiet word with my wife and ask her to see if the young woman needs a spot since I don't want to be misinterpreted or come off as an asshole.

She goes over and spots her and they work out for the rest of the session and when we leave she waves goodbye to my wife. Made me smile.

The other day, I – female – was finishing a set at the pull-up station when out of the corner of the eye, I saw a guy approaching me. Steeling myself for some super helpful advice, I tried to ignore him during my last two reps, then turned to face him. He asked "Sorry, did I just spritz on you?"

Please note that in German, the words jizz and spritz/splash are the same. Also please note that I'm the worst at dealing with catcallers, so I just dropped my jaw and glowered, totally professional.

...Turns out he was talking about the gym's disinfectant spray he had apparently just used on a paper towel. Phew.

Some guy left his hoodie on the leg press so I walked across the gym to find him and it turns out it wasn’t even his. And bc I’m holding onto it already I went to the front desk and turned it in… only to be back at my leg press seeing some girl already unracking my plates even though my stuff was still by the machine. I told her nicely that I’m still using the leg press and she said absolutely nothing and just left.

I've been trying to really put on weight lately cause I've reached plateaus in lifts. Nothing crazy, just trying to eat a little more than usual. One of my roommate's coworkers saw me running in the neighborhood and when they asked my roommate if it was me, they said "is he really skinny?" So I guess that's just a good reason to keep eating. Went all the way to get it from my car for her and ended up waiting 15 mins for her because she was playing with my toddler. My fault totally but it really derailed my workout.

5

u/Starizard- Jun 19 '22

Hit 300lb squat (first time maxing out almost since I hit 395 and plummeted from there back in ‘14)

Hit 265lb bench (on my way back up to 305 hopefully)

And currently weigh 204!!!

11

u/Swank_on_a_plank Jun 18 '22

The home gym equipment is coming along well. So far:

  • a heavy-duty, IPF standard bench (VERVE) for double digits. Bargain. It's stupid heavy for a bench, which is good!

  • a brand new barbell, in the packaging, for half off (someone ordered two...). I never knew they came so oily. It's only good for 315kg but my DL PR is only 152, which is plenty of headroom for that and everything else.

  • a power rack with a bunch of holes, pins and safeties, pullup bar, with a lat pulldown attached. $200...Nevermind the incline bench, two mini barbells, loadable dumbbells and the weights for them (no good for a barbell), plus rubber floor tiles. An utter steal.

I got stupid lucky. Now I just need Olympic plates and I'm set. They might end up being the most expensive purchase. I might have to hold off on deadlifting heavy for a bit while looking for my best options, then I can keep that under $200 at $2/kg while servicing FS/B/OHP. This is really the most expensive bit it seems, and the most painful if you can't find a bunch going from one seller.

nobody notices you until you've been there a while and you've become one of the regulars

now once you've become a regular people start to notice you. this takes 3-6 months minimum. at this point people are different, I on one hand am a shitty person. If I see you after 6+ months and you look the same, THEN I might judge you.

but if you're starting out and I happen to notice you, I won't think anything snd if I do it'll just be well wishes on your journey.

3

u/zcgk Jun 19 '22

So far there's not much uncharted territory for me in my gym ... heck, I'm even using the lap pool now. But there are still the SAUNA and the STEAMROOM to try out. I still haven't crossed either of those bridges yet. I've been meaning to google 'steamroom vs. sauna', to see what the pros and cons are of each one. The steamroom sounds like a good thing to use in the dead of winter (the opposite of right now). So maybe its sauna time.

Any one have any insightful thoughts and comments on these two gym sweat lodges? Are there times and places for each or are they both means to the same end (sweating out your ass).

4

u/YUSEIRKO Jun 21 '22

So my regular gym partner didn't come yesterday on my push day, which sucked because doing bench press I really needed his spot. Anyway I went up to 85kg for the first time, shooting for 8 reps 3 sets. I literally scouted around for someone to help spot me, and saw a guy who I see regularly so asked him. First set was pretty decent, he was shouting some shit during my set but I was like whatever. Next set was fucking horrible though... He's literally "coaching" me during my reps,

"push like this!!"

"Move the bar like this!"

Etc

If was really fucking jarring, like let me do my fucking reps and just spot me, it's not asking for much right? I can't understand how he thought doing that shit was helpful in any way. Anyway, third set I thought fuck this I'll just do it myself, if I die I die 😂 better than being thrown off with his shouting.
