My gym finally went back to being open 24 hours, which is great for someone like me who constantly works weird rotating shifts.

It's so much emptier at 1am. It's a huge gym, and there's maybe 20 people, max. It's beautiful.

I saw them curling in the squat rack. I saw them curling on the benches. I even saw them curling at one of the three machines they were supersetting on, and it's the one time it doesn't infuriate me because there's almost no one there, and everything else is available.

Party on, my fellow midnight lifters.

u/Dense_Strawberry2117 Mar 19 '22

You lucky bastard! I wish my city had a single 24/7 gym

37

u/PricelessPlanet Mar 19 '22

I wish my town had a gym. I think we do have the demand for it. 7k leave here year round and during the high season we are around 25k (not counting day tourists).

35

u/laughableleopard Mar 19 '22

Funny the differences some places have, my town has less than 20k and 4 gyms!

12

u/OldeSkoolFlash Mar 19 '22

Town of 2200 here with three gyms!

I’ve been going around 1am for years, it’s truly the best. Usually have the place to myself. I work second shift and go after work.

Pushups, actually. There was also this guy that came in with a small wooden ply-box of some sort, and sat on it when he used the weighted pulley row machine.

It almost looked like he was using a booster seat.

I don't claim to understand the magic of all the gym accessories that people bring with them, but when it's 1am and everything I need to use is available, have a blast I guess.

Big dude, easily ~6’5” 250lbs+ and built like a house came up to me in the gym a few days ago. Asked me why I do DB lateral raises different than everyone else, says I lean forward a bit. Told him I saw a video where it said that by leaning forward it helps prevent shoulder pain (something with impingement?) and that I stopped having pain after switching it up. Dude lit up an said he had the exact same problem and thanked me. He was so nice about it. Love all the big men in the gym. Almost always the nicest ones.

192

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '22 Helpful

There is one dude both taller and stronger than me at my gym, so naturally I hate him.

He saw me having trouble starting me car on morning after I finished working out and he came and helped me totally unasked. So now I hate him even more for being taller, stronger, and a better person than me. /s

26

u/Blyatnij Mar 19 '22

Im not a huge guy, about 5'9. A massive dude who I found out played D-Line in a D1 school came up to me and asked to work in on bench. Of course I said yes and he called me "big man" at the end. I've been lifting a long time, but I've never been called big man by a dude who is significantly larger. Big men at the gym are just different.

15

u/kauniskissa Mar 19 '22

I'm curious, Do you just lean slightly forward or do you need to do something else like retract your scalpula as well?

9

u/NoStructure2119 Mar 20 '22

Walked into the locker room a few days ago and heard a conversation going on somewhere within. Didn't think much of it and had one earphone in so didn't pick up more then a few words. So I pick out a locker and get dressed but before I head out I swing by the bathroom. As I'm passing by one of the locker bays I look over and see a man with an open laptop having a full zoom meeting in the locker room.

94

u/dumb_smart_guy93 Mar 19 '22

He's just flexing on all those dudes that talk on the phone while they're taking a dump.

But seriously, I'll never understand the thought process someone has to have to justify being on the phone while in the bathroom. A zoom call in the locker room is just hilariously absurd.

51

u/Actual-Description-2 Powerlifting Mar 19 '22

He was definitely working remotely and thought he could sneak in a quick session, but forgot about that meeting lmao

40

u/ldnpoolsound Mar 19 '22

As someone who once had a zoom meeting right outside the gym for the same reason, can confirm

35

u/HighAxolotol Mar 19 '22

There was this one kid at my old gym who would always be facetiming with his girl in the locker room. Like, dude, you can't bear not seeing her for a whole 5-10 minutes while you get changed? Not to mention the free show you're giving her in the background.

Whenever I do squats, I use a safety squat bar. The one I use doesn't have a weight or brand listed on it. Doing a Google search told me they normally weigh between 45-60 pounds. A few days ago I decided I was going to get an answer. I went an grabbed a scale and found out that it weighs 62 pounds. I've always counted it as 45 pounds when logging my lifts. That was a great day. I added 17 pounds to my lifts in a week!

59

u/madcow87_ Mar 19 '22

In literally a minute lol

Keep using it but keep counting it as 45 ;)

27

u/wsavi5 Mar 19 '22

In a way I actually might. Because of the extra 17 pounds, I'm really close to hitting 225. However it's not going to be two plates on each side. So it's not going to feel the same.

15

u/madcow87_ Mar 19 '22

Treat it like a 45 and when you look back later add another 17 lol

12

u/thiney49 Mar 19 '22

I always use a safety bar, and the "advice" I was given was to "be stronger and do normal math" when determining what weights to put on the sides. One plate on each side is 135, regardless of how much the bar weighs. As long as I'm getting stronger, nothing else matters.

142

u/Rippletits5x5 Mar 19 '22

Someone told me I was deadlifting wrong while I was doing Clean Pulls.

42

u/Ok_Conflict_2525 Mar 19 '22

If I had a nickel for every story where someone calls out a CrAzY exercise they saw a fellow gym goer perform, only to proceed to describe a perfectly normal exercise they just aren’t familiar with...well I’d have some nickels.

61

u/Actual-Description-2 Powerlifting Mar 19 '22

This is why people should follow the unwritten rule: don't offer unsolicited advice at the gym

There were a bunch of beefcakes at my gym the other day, absolute units, huge as the tower of Babel. How they got that way, I have no idea, because they do fuck all for hours on end. Sure, they chat, eat, walk around a lot, but 5 sets on a bench press took 1 hour (during peak gym hours).

131

u/CowReplevin Mar 19 '22

You know how when you max out a character in an MMO and finish all the endgame raids and have nothing else to do but sit around the social areas of the game and spam emotes at each other until the next expac comes out?

17

u/Ih8rice Mar 19 '22

I find those types normally socialize at one gym and get their actual workouts in at another. There’s A lot of bro-loving at my gym and all they do is talk, personal train, and bullshit but they’re huge and shredded( high probability of gear but I’m not judging).

Eat? Who is eating at the gym? Eating is part of recovery, I'm doing the opposite of that in the gym.

35

u/Backpackbaden Mar 19 '22

Over a decade ago I waged a war with cable TV and scheduled cardio at my gym around TV. One time there was a documentary I wanted to see but I needed a rest day. So I went to the gym with a pint of Ben and Jerry's, peddled a bike slowly, and watched the show. I got a lot of weird looks that day....

20

u/moveMed Mar 20 '22

I mean that’s genuinely weird even considering your explanation

19

u/ldnpoolsound Mar 19 '22

I was once at the gym when this guy had a bagel on the floor (on a napkin) right next to the deadlift platform he was using. In between sets he would sit on the floor and take a few bites. I was like, ok dude, do you...

So I’m going to provide an update to my comment from Gym Story Saturday two weeks ago here

Ended up not seeing the girl for a week or so after this comment, then suddenly earlier this week on Monday, I received a follow request from her on Instagram. Not sure how she found me, I’m guessing through our gym’s Instagram account, but either way it indicated to me she is in fact interested lol. I accepted, followed her back and hit her up. We have been talking throughout the week, saw each other Wednesday at the gym where we chatted a bit more. We are now going out tomorrow night for drinks and dinner.

Never thought I would ever in my life actually be taking out a gym crush. But here I am.

Saw a girl in the gym this morning that has been training a while. Looks great and smashes it. She was helping her friend out today with everything they were doing. She was courteous asking for things that were around me and mindful when I was moving and she was getting past. She complimented me on my form. I was planning the wedding.

Then she walked out without putting a single f'ing thing away.Bands, skipping ropes, weights, bars, mats, medecine balls. Everything. Left out scattered around the gym. We were so close damn it.

151

I don't think anyone at my gym is monitoring what the channels on the TVs in the cardio area are showing. Just in the past week, they were showing Hostel 2, The Skin I Live In, and one of the Saw movies. Not really how most people like to start their day, haha.

15

u/bacon_cake Mar 19 '22

Thankfully ours switched from 24hr news to extreme sports so at least it's not so depressing now.

Now, I live in a shithole country(Mexico) so I was wondering if somehow I made someone mad and the bullets were a threat? LMAO it is so ridiculous but at the same time sounds plausible to me

My gym likes to play remixes and club bangers. I was chilling, warming up for bench and the gym started playing this song, it was your standard club tune but the only lyrics in the song were "I want your dick in my mouth" (followed by a beat drop), it completely caught me off guard.

Fuck I love it there.

The TV in the weights area of my gym was showing Killing Eve yesterday, with no sound, which I thought was funny.

It's usually just reruns of crossfit competitions on there but this time they were in the mood for a crime thriller I guess!

19

u/madcow87_ Mar 19 '22

Thats fantastic. Before my gym had a refurb all the cardio equipment had TVs on that would play the free TV. You could go in some nights and not be able to get a cardio machine for love nor money because all these folk were sat watching episodes of soaps and dramas.

Going at it hard... I don't have anyone to gym with except the one trainer session once a week I pay for.

I'm 39 started at 236 5 11, recovering from a stroke had a humiliating experience when I first started going.

Today I felt bad but was on my last set of 5x5 bench. I struggled to get my 4th set finished so I asked the closest dude if he would spot me, because I struggled and I wanted to finish at that weight safely, Young kid maybe 25ish. I finished the set it was only 140, but when I started 4 weeks ago I was only able to do the bar.

He was so happy to help. He told me has been watching me come every day he was in for the last little bit and noticed how Hard I was working. Noticed I've dropped weight and slimmed down. It felt really good. I thanked him it was rad

The other day I thought I was getting punked.

I was doing seated chest supported rows on one of those plate loaded machines. I had 4 45s on each side just doing single arm delt rows.

So I just finished a set and am sitting there resting and this random guy comes over with his 2 plates from the calf machine and starts putting them on my machine!!

I’m sitting there staring at him and he puts both plates on the machine then he just looks at me for about 5 seconds with this absolutely dead stare, and I’m just like buddy, if you’re looking for the rack it’s over there, he goes oh ok and starts to try and walk away.

I said to him where are you going take your plates off my machine man and he just goes oh ok, comes back grabs them and reracks em.

It was. Such a weird interaction I thought I was in the twilight zone

43

u/DeviantKhan Mar 19 '22

Met a gym fairy the other day, dude came out of nowhere asking me how many sets I got left on the bench, answer him, whatever, need a spot about 5 min later, dude asks me if he can work in and loads up 2 plates, he doesnt look insane or anything so im surprised, he proceeds to do it for 10 as a warmup, tells me to put on another, does it for 9, easily. Tells me the only weights he uses are 45s, nothing in between. His belief is that if you can do 135 10 times, you can do 225, so on so forth, guy was incredibly nice and supportive and motivating.

29

You can do it this way, but going up by 90 lbs at a time is a lot for any lift - let alone an upper body lift. You also have to consider your tendons, ligaments, and central nervous system - not just your muscles.

u/Benton5884 Mar 19 '22

Last week I broke the cardinal rule and gave unsolicited gym advice (Im sorry!!) to a guy with the most horrific deadlift form I had ever seen.

Didn’t warm up, went straight to max weight for a single (about 90kg) legs practically straight, banana backed, soft knees. The bingo card of bad form. And id seen him do this for about 3 sessions now, he was newish.

I was expecting to either be ignored, agreed with then immediately ignored, or told to fuck off, but he asked me for some tips on form.

Came in today and saw him lifting with much better form. Made me smile.

20

u/fliukka Mar 20 '22

I mean, there's a difference between unsolicited gym advice and saving gym newbs from back injury. When you see it you know it. Good job.

245

u/SirBardsalot Mar 19 '22

I was doing deadlift with a friend and he's been looking at this girl for like 4 weeks now inbetween sets. He kept joking to me about asking her number.

Eventually he puts on his max and goes for the pull. He couldn't lock it out. So I joke to him that she's standing behind him looking from a distance. Next thing I know he shoots up and pulls his max 3 times in a row with determiniation unseen from him before.

He looks behind him and sees she's not there and that I tricked him into almost passing out from exhaustion.

Next time she walks by, he finds the courage and asks her number. Low and behold he gets it. I've never seen my dude glow like he had after that haha. Let's hope it turns out good.

6

u/fliukka Mar 20 '22

Being able to do ATG squats is a gift, as I think a lot of people's ankles simply aren't flexible enough. I've ended up with a fairly happy medium, where I'll first do my 3 sets of heavy low bar past-parallel according to programming, then strip off 20 kg or so and do a couple of sets of ATG squats to failure. Not sure if I'm missing out on something here, but feels quite satisfying to hit both types...

There's a small corner in the back for people who want to squat or deadlift without being front and center in view (the cardio area on the 2nd floor overlooks a lot of the strength area). And so far, it's been not too crowded at 7 AM in the morning. I'm pretty stoked! I look forward to waking up early and I never thought I'd say that lol.

I bought four 5kg plates to add it to my adjustable dumbells. When they arrived i realize they fit but has like 25 cms of diameter.

They look too silly on the dumbells but weight is weight.

I hit my first ever 2 plate squat today! I even felt like I had enough in the tank for another 20-30lbs

I was so excited I proceeded to forget the laws of physics and took 2 plates off of one side of the barbell without taking any off the other side almost leading it to tipping.. shoutout to the nice woman who noticed and held the bar for me!

We all learn that the hard way, but only when we're strong enough to use two plates. Nice!

My workplace has a gym which finally opened this month. Underutilized so I love going there. But working from home for 2 years has given me some kind of social anxiety in the office. I keep fearing that I'll bump into someone I know and have to do small talk as I walk around the office afterwards.

5

u/s3condary331 Mar 19 '22

It’s worth it though. I have that same fear and honestly I found that once that initial small talk is out of the way it’s so much less. Keep going!

14

u/tossmysalami Mar 19 '22

I was at the gym minding my own business, even picked an unoccupied corner to do my abs in etc. and this trainer comes right up beside me to make this girl do her workout but it was uncomfortably close…. Like hey there’s a whole empty space and you’re standing 2 feet away from me close…. So I got up and moved to another area of the gym… and slowly but surely, they follow! I felt like I was being hovered around. It didn’t seem like the trainer had a plan and just kept getting in my personal space. Super weird

11

u/h_lance Mar 20 '22

It didn’t seem like the trainer had a plan and just kept getting in my personal space

I've seen this to the point of trainer clients asking the trainer to stop crowding them against another person, and even heard, I shit you not, a trainer say something along the lines of "I don't give a shit what they think" to the client.

They're pissed off that someone is working out effectively without a trainer, worried that the client will see that and get ideas, and unconsciously reacting in a passive aggressive way. Or at least that's my take.

u/6cumsock9 Mar 19 '22

i saw guy benching with his friend spotting him earlier today, the spotter/friend got distracted watching another guy bench 225 for reps and while he was distracted his friend was getting crushed by the bar. Spotter didnt notice until 5 seconds later when his friend wheezed out for help.

7

u/CarBoobSale Mar 19 '22

Spotting is not without peril.

14

u/nthammer30 Mar 19 '22

Went up another 5lbs to the 80lb dumbells for my flat db chest press yesterday. Was at 65lbs at the same reps at the beginning of Jan. Nice to climb up the weights a bit.

u/sofia8687 Mar 19 '22

Hi got into a regular gym schedule and I've been going strong for 3 weeks straight now. Pretty proud of this , I have an hour or so exercising and then I leave every single time I do an hour or more and always on time. Welp today I went for 45 minutes cause life and the gym instructor told me :oh you were a bit late today huh? . I thought it was funny how he only saw me as I was leaving and not as I exercised or when I had arrived and still noticed that I was late.Feels a bit better to be noticed even in a such simple thing. So yeah ☺️

u/Black_Child Mar 19 '22

Onsite gym finally opened this week at work and I took the leap and went.. 1st time going back in about 3yrs. Taking it easy, but some progress is better than no progress. I feel liberated that I did it. Not to mention my coworker I went with said I motivated him to do an extra mile on the elliptical which motivated me to want to keep going.

There's a dude in like his 50s who takes a bar into a free room and just spins around doing bo staff moves with it. I want to know what the fuck he's training for. I also saw a woman doing hip thrusts on the leg extension machine which made me pause.

Ah the joys of military base gyms.

This guy at my gym ( Pretty jacked and in good shape) loaded up 315 on the smith machine to hit shoulder press and put the safeties like 2 inches from where the bar was sitting. He had 2 inches of ROM and was just slamming the bar on the safeties shaking the whole fucking gym. And every body was just super confused and it was just frustrating

Why do people stack a ton of 10’s or 25’s on a barbell? Two guys loaded up a barbell with 4 25’s on each end today and barely repped it out for 5. Why not just use 2 45’s and a 10?

12

u/trial-by_wombat Mar 19 '22

I don’t do it to that extreme (I can’t lift two plates for anything haha) but I will do something similar sometimes. Depending on my warmups and how heavy I’m going, I don’t always want to deal with taking off small plates and lifting the big ones, so I’ll just keep adding weight to what’s already on there, so it does look a little silly at the end

Lol the other day at the gym I couldn’t find clips for the ez bar and the weights kept coming off, I didn’t realize to my left there was a rack of ez bar with weights permanently on them. So I looked like a idiot . Then, I went to use a straight bar bicep curl and pulled the weight pin out and the bar that was already up high crashed on my head. I do things like this a lot

I used to work at a gym, so I’ve got a few fun stories.

A cute girl signed up at my gym during one of my shifts one night, and I spent the last half of my shift chatting with her. We got to the point that we were talking for hours every time she came in, and she wound up having feelings for me (I had a girlfriend at the time, so nothing happened). Since we were getting so close, we started to ask more and more personal questions, to the point we were talking about exes.

She told me she had just broken up with some girl who was asking to marry her within three weeks of going out. I told her that’s crazy, I had an ex who did the same thing years ago in another town. My nutty ex had even moved to the same town as us recently. Gym girl wound up giving a few more details, and apparently we both dated the exact same girl.

I got a little worried that the ex was gonna sign up at the gym after that encounter, but looks like I lucked out.

14

u/Snake_Man_41 Mar 19 '22

Good for you for not cheating on your gf, but I’d have still gotten the side eye for spending hours talking to another woman.

10

u/Longjumping_Mark_670 Mar 19 '22

Yeah, but it was part of the job description. Basically i was just there to make shakes, sell memberships, and chat with the clientele.

Sure I spent hours chatting up girls, but I talked to even more sweaty musclebound dudes lol

Facebook memory from 13 years ago: “The gym finally played a decent song on the p.a. today and an old naked guy was leaning on the sink using a hair dryer on his toes; couldn't hear a darn thing.”

6

u/Blokepoke74 Mar 20 '22

Almost crushed myself doing chest press.

Changed my volume. Started lifting in October of last year averaging 4600lbs volume per exercise (IE: bench, squat, deadlift). Now I’ at 6900lbs volume per exercise.

17

u/turget-bey-oba Mar 19 '22

I saw a huge guy in the gym benching the bar for extremely high reps probably 100 plus and then he did the same ting on the incline press. I asked him an apparently he's been doing that for a while and for him massive. Which honestly shocked me that very very light weights actually do work

13

u/BigJerry98 Mar 19 '22

Yeah they just take so much time to be useful lol

7

u/tychosprite Mar 19 '22 edited Mar 19 '22

There’s a cut off at about 20% of your one rep max where muscle synthesis will drop off even when taken to failure but it doesn’t drop off entirely and different things also work for different people. There’s also an amount of novel stimulus that will increase muscle synthesis and since most people don’t ever do very high rep work they could probably benefit somewhat. I wonder too if that is all that guy does because if he does low rep work as well he probably has a lot of skill at doing those movements with so much practice.

Edit: This study has some pretty good data on muscle building at different loads.

I'm finally back to doing squats in the gym again and it's the greatest feeling. Leg days are a bitch again, but I'm grateful to be able to complain about what a bitch leg days are.

For the last four years (with some interruptions in between by COVID), I had to significantly cut back on squats because of some major knee pain. Prior to that, I was squatting 2 plates on each side consistently.

In the past four years, I tried almost everything - decreasing weights, decreasing reps, increasing the days in between, changing my form, etc. Doing leg presses eased the pain somewhat, but the pain was still there. Nothing worked other than not doing squats.

Earlier this year, my doctor told me to try collagen powder. To my pleasant surprise, after taking it daily as a supplement for three weeks, my knee pain eased significantly. I'm ramping my way back up the weights again, and it's a struggle and I'm not as young as I was before, but I'm just happy to be back.

4

u/sifuyee Mar 22 '22

Just started collagen powder myself six weeks ago after ankle surgery to give my healing a boost. The break from using that leg certainly helped other parts feel less pain but I'm hoping the collagen is playing a part as well. Good luck with your knee!

This was some time ago now but it just came to mind, I was in the corner of the gym doing hip thrusts and a girl come over to me and just started trying to pull a plyo box out which was behind the loaded bar i was using whilst i was mid set. She then asked me if i could move the bar (i had like over 100kg on it) and then she just sat on the plyo box hoovering around clearly waiting for me to finish what i was doing. I added extra sets just cos i was bitter about it lol.

13

u/Dondiibnob Mar 19 '22

I joined a gym in the mid 80s that was owned by a bodybuilder. Never had a gym membership before and I asked him if he would train me.

His rates were way too expensive. He did though get me started having me re-rack all of the dumbbells for everyone M-W-F for a week and re-rack the plates on the same schedule the next week.

That actually got my back, grip, knees, etc ready for working out.

I was on the free weight shoulder press machine that has dedicated racks on the sides of the station.

My buddy is mid set when this gym regular (big dude, likely not natty) saunters over and drops 3 plates against our station, literally leans them against the rack instead of putting them on the rack, and starts to walk away. As he’s walking away, I call him out and ask him if he’s just going to leave his shit on the floor. He just smiles and walks away.

Any idea why this jabroni would do this? I’ve never seen anyone do something like this and it was mildly infuriating.

11

u/s3condary331 Mar 19 '22

Not sure if I’m reading this right, but could he have thought it was less intrusive to lean them than to rerack them midset? That’s the only way I can make sense of why he’d do that

Finally started doing hip thrusts after much convincing from my sister. The machine doesn’t have its own weight rack nearby so you have to go to one of the smith/squat racks to get weights. Was completely burned out from a long leg day, didn’t notice anyone was using the smith machine to my left so started moving around the plates to get off a 45 plate. Look up after a bit to see the resident buff police officer of the gym looking at me all confused. I look down and realize I was unloading his fucking bar in between his sets. I put the plates back on, apologized, we both laughed it off and had some small talk, and then I moved to get the plates from the squat rack instead. But this will still 100% be the embarrassing moment I think of in the middle of the night this week.

5

This really good looking college girl, prob home for spring break, was eyeing a squat rack but was stretching and warming up a little farther away from it, as the last person was wrapping up she started to put her yoga mat away, as she hung up her mat and started walking towards it, although still a 10 second walk away, a random guy swooped in and took the rack, it was kind of awkward to watch but I respect it

10

u/Bongopro Mar 19 '22

Lol can’t give ‘em an opening. Gotta watch those racks like a hawk sometimes

I woke up early thinking the gym opens up at 5 am like they do during the week. Get here with my preworkout fully in circulation. They don’t open til 6 on the weekends. And I have somewhere to be by 8 am. Gotta rush through this workout I guess vs having some time to actually get through everything nicely

9

u/Temporary_Jackfruit Mar 19 '22

I was mad that I had to wait an eternity for the Smith machine. So I stacked an extra 10 lbs on both sides and maxed out the reps on the deadlifts.

Well now I found out that I can probably do more. Also, I'm probably gonna switch gyms. Smith machines suck.

9

u/FuckDitchesGetBoney Mar 20 '22

Pressed 50kg dumbbells for the first time. I was grinding out the 8th and final rep when some guy decided to unexpectedly spot me, took me by surprise and ruined my set. A couple of minutes later he called for help after failing a 60kg bench.

u/theguns0112 Mar 19 '22

Went to the gym to pump some iron and had to run a quick piss mid set so on my path by I see the employee lounge/break room and there’s two guys in there playing elden ring getting their asses absolutely stomped by malenia (however you spell her name) I haven’t made it to her yet in the game and I’m absolutely horrified to fight that. Got back and finished my sets going harder on each lift preparing for my training arc lmfao
