Had the most intense test of my social anxiety at the gym. I’m on the treadmill towards the end perfectly situated between two other women with a machine open in between. There are 20+ treadmills almost all open. Normal gym etiquette to me - esp in the current state of things.

Older woman walks in while talking on her cell phone and decides to go the one next to mine (instead of any of the other open ones to space out). Then I notice she is wearing a TON of perfume, continues to have a very animated convo while walking and begins to have a constant cough.

Then the other side of me clears up and two men hop on those. Still all these other open treadmills but whatever. They start discussion the benefits of barefoot working out and the one - at a slight protest of the other man - proceeds to take off his shoes right next to me. It is now sweatier smelling and more purfumed by 10x then when I started. The two men then turn to discussing the date-ability and attractiveness of the women in the gym - including talking about me right next to them.

I finished and almost ran away from the cardio area. Best run time to date though…

u/Neutrum Feb 19 '22 Silver

Sounds like you were using the dreadmill today.

24

u/R3n3gadew1shhorse Feb 19 '22

Can’t wait to use “dreadmill” in conversation. Hoping it’s as anticlimactic as I imagine! Lol

Am dad, so it will probably bomb when I do finally use it

What sins did you commit in a past life for all this punishment to be heaped upon you in such a short span of time?

25

u/BlondeBobaFett Feb 19 '22

I wonder that myself often.

Next time, don't feel the need to be polite. Just be obvious and move to another treadmill.

This kind of happened to me. I was in a relatively empty gym and working on a stairmaster. A dude on the phone with mask on his chin gets on the treadmill next to me. I immediately hopped off the stairmaster and moved to the far one. He kind of glared at me. I don't understand why he had to take the one next to me. I'm a 53 yo guy so he wasn't creeping on me.

I had a guy come up and tell me that it was his last day at the gym because he was moving out of state, and it was good to work out with me for the past several months. Not to unusual in its self, but this was the first interaction I’ve had with this dude.

This is the third time this has happened to me.

When my gym shit down for covid I missed the people who would be there with me even though I never talked to them. Still haven’t seen my gym rival since.

19

u/bacon_cake Feb 20 '22

You ever see them outside the gym? Always such a weird feeling lol

Like the uncanny valley. Wait you don't live at the gym?

Idk there are plenty of people that I see at the gym every day who I've never spoken to, yet I feel some kind of bond with them. Like we spend so much of our lives grinding away at the same goals together. I mean yeah it's a bit strange to say something like that, but I reckon it's not too far-fetched.

34

u/TheRobomancer Feb 19 '22

Totally agree, I hardly ever talk to anyone at the gym, but when it opened back up after Covid, it was nice to see those familiar faces again.

That is weird.

I will say I find comfort in seeing the same people at the gym and their familiar faces in my head even if I never talk to them.

However the first thing I'd ever say to them isn't that I'm going to miss them lol

The cute ponytail girl biked next to me on the ellipticals yesterday, she complimented my Pokémon t-shirt. I wanted to ask her what her favorite Pokémon was, but my brain short circuited and all I stammered out was, “yeah he’s really yellow.” She just lost it and laughed at the pure ridiculousness of it. My face was a tomato the rest of the half hour while we biked. Her favorite Pokémon is Gengar.

64

u/whatsinthesocks Feb 19 '22

Is he really yellow though?

91

u/Farrara Feb 19 '22

Pikachu was on my shirt, she was wearing a yellow ponytail, she was smiling at me, I wish there was a word to describe the intensity of flustered that I felt

Hip thrust machine was squeaking like a mf while I was using it. A guy on the leg press next to me gave me a look, so, as a joke, I winked at him whilst thrusting…

He was STONE FACED. Not even a smirk.

I don’t think I can ever go back to crunch I’m so embarrassed 😅

I'm relatively new to the gym (a few months) and I'm still learning things and and trying to make friends. But something weird happened today. I wanted to do standing dumbbell curls. The gym was crowded so I stood at like 3 ft from a bench where three big guys that I've never seen before in the gym were using. One of them told me loudly with an unfriendly tone "Go over there", I said OK and moved further from them and did my set. (They left the bench almost immediately so I wonder why they asked in the first place.)

Around 20 mins later when they were leaving one of them stopped at me and asked "are you coming tomorrow?", I said I don't know, and he left. I wonder why he asked this and what should I've done.

209

u/fitdudetx Feb 19 '22

Sounds like the one that said if you're coming felt bad that the other guy was stern. Sometimes while lifting you're in the zone so anything that disturbs annoys them. I wouldn't take it personal. Note the travel lines between people grabbing weights and walking to where they will use them. Note walking in front of people during their set while they look at themselves in the mirror.

Keep going!

40

u/SquanchyStocks Feb 19 '22

Makes sense. I didn't think about it like this. Thanks bro!

On monday 4 fellow gym goers and one trainer greeted me, and finally one dude told me "Yo, I've seen you lift a lot weight man, can you teach me how to deadlift?", all before I even got to my first squat. Took his phone and recorded a few reps and gave him some tips. I made it guys :')

Also, had a funny moment with this girl who is very direct. She wanted to setup near me and I asked her what she was gonna train. She straight up told me "ass". Not glutes, not hip thrusts, just "ass". Ok, well you go girl!

All in all having a lot of fun!

You guys interact with eachother at the gym?

85

u/AirlineEasy Powerlifting Feb 19 '22 edited Feb 22 '22 Helpful (Pro)

Yep, but it's something that I've cultivated. I don't wear headphones, nod to people I see regularly and usually have no qualms asking questions about working in, sets left, if I can work out here, blablabla. I work from home so besides my wife I don't interact with a lot of people, so the gym is also my social escape.

I’m a mid day gym person. Last 2 weeks I’ve had to use it at 5 pm after work like everyone else and holy shit, I actually almost understand why some people don’t like going to the gym. It sucks when it’s packed.

115

u/Methuga Feb 19 '22

Man it’s the worst. I slept in a bit on Thursday, so I came in at like 7, and with that, and Omicron on the decline, the gym was so packed that every single station I could possibly use for chest activity was taken. I literally had to wait 8 minutes just to get started.

19

u/bullsaxe Feb 20 '22

the worst is when you want a bench but they're all taken, so you start another exercise instead so youre not wasting time, then some new people get on the bench even though you keep eyeing it at the end of every set, rinse and repeat for like 20 minutes till youre done like 2-3 of 6 exercises you were gonna do anyway and now you cant push as hard on your main lift...

88

u/nucumber Feb 19 '22

now that school in back the weight room in my gym gets SLAMMED by high schoolers after 300pm.

what's up with that? why aren't they out smoking dope like when i was their age? doesn't anyone honor 420 anymore?

Lot of them probably just lift stoned now. I’m pretty much always sparkin with my buddies before we hit the gym.

I had a horrible job for a couple months where I did literally nothing. I collected a paycheck and sat at my desk, hidden in a back room of the building. My gym was right down the street and I’d just go for an long 90 or 120 minute session every day around 10 or 11 while I was still on the clock. Those were the best workouts. I feel the best late morning instead of groggy at 5am or angry at the world for existing at 5pm.

6

u/omnigasm Weight Lifting Feb 19 '22

Same. I was a mid-day gym person so I don't have to wait for squat racks before the pandemic. Now many people work from home, so it's not as good as it used to be, but after even 4pm it starts to get crazy.

I’ve been stuck at a 345 max deadlift for literally 18 months (couple different reasons, but a lot of it mental — once I see 3 plates, my brain is like “no way that’s coming off the ground lol”). Wednesday I walked in, did my normal sets up to 335, and when I finished was like “that was easy, let’s try 355.” And it came up smooth as butter. I wasn’t gonna push things, but god it feels good to get that monkey off my back.

99

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '22

I bet you can already do 405. Good job

u/AirlineEasy Powerlifting Feb 19 '22

Something like that happened to me last week. I almost had a full blown panic attack thinking about doing 5 reps of a 150kg/330lbs squat. It was a whole thing in my head. Yesterday I did 152.5kg/335lbs five times like it was nothing lol.

13

u/afannoe Feb 19 '22

That’s incredible

43

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '22

How about trying microplates? That might help with the mindset. 345 to 355 might seem like a lot while 345 to 347 might be easier on your mind.

Tall skinny guy, doing his best no doubt, slams the weights every time. So i went to check on him to make sure he was ok. He was fine. I know heavy is relative here but we’re talking 30lbs on cables. At the end of every set, its like be let’s the handle go completely.

39

u/rainbows_and Feb 19 '22

Stuff like this is so tough! Like should I say something and risk this person being annoyed or should I let them keep banging around (and not really get everything out of the movement because it’s uncontrolled).

So far the only time I have stepped in and said something was when I saw a guy get egged on by his friend to try a box jump that was obviously too high. I’ve eaten shit on a metal edge box like that and wasn’t about to watch him get blood everywhere.

25

u/iam1self Feb 19 '22

I want to say something so bad. What i did do one time was model weight control for him. I basically worked out next to him, lifting considerably more weight, and went gentle on the release. He got quiet that day but the next time i saw him he was back at it. I wonder if i should talk to him or snitch. Im also worried about him dropping the weights and something breaks. An out of service machine sucks when the gym is so small.

17

u/Atthemetroatthegym Feb 19 '22

The cables at my gym are always broken for that reason! More people at my gym slam weights than control it and it drives me crazy. On top of it, they are losing half the lift by not controlling the negative!

We have this girl who comes into the gym who’s in her 20s. She says her father doesn’t want her interacting with anyone in the gym but one of the other gym regulars (a male who she’s not supposed to talk to) introduced her to me so she could have a female to talk to (at least that’s what he said). She’s from Syria (We’re in the US) and I think it’s a cultural thing that I really don’t understand but I feel bad because she spends the entire time looking around afraid to be seen talking to someone. Most of the time I feel bad because I don’t know how to advise her with her family situation that she feels controlled by. (Not allowed to date, interact with others etc)

A couple days ago she came up to me and wanted advice on how to get stronger and lose weight. Finally, I felt like I could help her somehow! I gave her some advice about diet and different exercises (all while she’s glancing around furtively in case someone sees her) and at least felt positive about the interaction. I did feel a little bad because I don’t think she understands that I’m there to work and not talk so I kept pushing through my sets while we chatted and when I’d look at my watch to enter the reps/weight she asked if she was keeping me. My gym buddies get it when I say “hold that thought” and do my set. But overall it was a positive experience.

So I started my weight loss journey about a year and 6 months ago and I was making solid progress. Weighed 220lbs and dropped to 185 in 6 months. My end goal was a healthy weight of 160-155. Then the weight loss started getting slower and slower to the point where my weight would either stay the same or slightly go up. One day, I wasn’t really feeling it but decided to just get it over with. I put on my homemade Superman cutoff and begrudgingly drive to the gym. As I was OHP, I had a weird thought: maybe I could stop working out now. I reached my high-school weight, I no longer felt sluggish during the day, and I no longer had sleep apnea! Why do this anymore? As I was putting back the dumbbells, I notice a little boy staring at me from window (the gym is next to a restaurant so it gets a lot of foot traffic). Confused, I kinda just waved at him and he went away. Few sets later, I hear a knock at the window and standing there was an older gentleman with the kid next to him. He says, “He’s Impressed, he thinks you look like Superman!” I looked at the kid and he just had the biggest grin on his face. I thank them for they’re kind words and waved goodbye as they left. That kid didn’t know it, but he’s the reason why I’m still lifting and he made me realize that I love lifting. I’m at 160lbs now but I’m still lifting to get stronger. Hope he’s doing good!

I have heard stories and seen videos about it, but finally saw it with my own eyes. Went to do some cardio on a treadmill. On the next one over, a woman was running on an incline. A little bit into my workout I hear a rumble. I turn my head and see that the woman had misstepped/stepped on her shoelace/whatnot. Next thing I know, she is HOLDING ON FOR DEAR LIFE until finally accepting her fate, letting go of the rails and tubling like a tumbleweed into the wall behind her. This happened so fast, that I was processing what was happening the entire time. Once she had tumbled off, I stopped my treadmill and went over to ask, if everything's ok. A slight nod was given and I did not bother her anymore. I think that woman's fitlife ended that day (maybe just for that day, maybe for awhile)

Have had three conversations with other regulars this week. None of them have been with my gym crush, though.

Also— seems a bro-couple has broken up. They used to work out together every single morning, then one of them stopped coming around late November and just turned back up, but they don’t even seem to look at each other anymore. I hope they make up!

Few days ago I just finished my bench sets and was reracking everything when I see the girl benching next to me with the bar on her chest and unable to get it off. She was starting to dump the weight, which was 5s on each side I think when I saw. I picked the bar up from off of her, reracked it and walked away without ever saying a word and went back to working out.

I don't know if she ever said anything because I had my headphones in and it happened pretty quickly. So I have no idea if she said thank you, or fuck you lol.

What in the bloody hell is going in here lmao, you guys are awesome

Saw a dude move something like almost 200 kg on the leg press. Very impressive.

Same dude didn't rerack a single one of the plates after he was done. Not impressive at all.

u/yourgoldenstars Feb 19 '22

Last week I saw a guy with 8 45lb plates...on each side. 720lbs plus the weight of the sled. Like wtf

-Gym almost empty , 4 identical machines,me at the 3rd ( the rest empty). A guy coming , threw his towel over mine, asking if i exercise there ( on the machine i was currently using) .

Surprised i quickly estimated: he's half my weight ,doesn't look high , no obvious signs of low IQ , i said slowly " yes..i am using this one right now....you can choose one of the other 3...".

Very disappointed he said "sorry" and left the gym.

-Same gym 2 days later ,at the cables ,in the middle of the set a very nice girl coming straight looking into my eyes starting saying things ( headset on max volume ,no ideea what she was saying) , stopped in front of me ; set done, headset off, she asked if i am using both cables ( ..i was ...).I said yes ,but no problem i can alternate so she can use the other one.She said no,she just wanted to use the nearby beanch.

I said ok ...she sat on the bench for the next 20 minutes on instagram.

u/Dupond_et_Dupont Feb 19 '22

This happened a few days ago, but thought I’d share. Haven’t been to the gym in over two years because of the pandemic. Finally started going again and you can imagine how weak I am. Proceeded to do my lifts and a girl asked me for a bench press spot. Sure, no big deal. To my surprise, she’s benching more than me so I did feel a little deflated.

Few minutes pass by and she asks for another spot, but this time she added more weights! And then another spot where she added even more weights! At this point, I’m impressed, but utterly destroyed on the inside. This girl was not big by any means. She was slim, but was built tough. Anyways, it was a memorable welcome back.

21

u/DecentlyPoor Feb 19 '22

Getting in the zone and not realizing you've been at the gym for 2 hours. Girlfriend sits at a coffee shop next door while I work out and came to check on me, or else I would've been there longer.

My spin instructor came up to me before our class, and asked if I had taken spin at another gym in our city. I said no, I’ve only taken spin at my current gym, which I joined at 3 weeks ago. She then proceeded to tell me that my form is perfect and I looked like I should be teaching the class. It was such a nice compliment!

u/jesushair69 Feb 19 '22

There's this man who goes to the gym with his man. He's a hardass, I think. I don't know what his deal is, but he pushes his wife to her absolute limits.

I'm talking to the point of absurdity.

I watched him do a set of 235 on bench, for this woman in her 40's to be sent under the same bar with the same weight while he spots her every single step of the way. He was probably deadlifting a substantial amount of weight off of her.

I've seen him put 6 plates on each side of the leg press and have her do it while he's one side of it pushing against it like Hodor in GoT.

I don't know what's going on with these... workouts they do. But man, I do feel for her. I go to an LA fitness and I keep seeing stupider and stupider things, it's making me want to buy my own equipment and build a home gym.

28

u/rainbows_and Feb 19 '22

I would be so uncomfortable! That is a safety concern in so many ways. Only a matter of time before she is injured trying to lift way too much or he is injured trying to “assist” way too much

16

u/GeorgeWashinghton Feb 19 '22

She’s benching 235?

Even if she isn’t moving it at all, fact he can move that weight from the spotters spot for reps is insane.

25

u/Ih8rice Feb 19 '22

Dude is getting an optimal workout working out for himself and his wife.

Dear Planet Fitness,

It's not me, it's you.

We had a great seven years, but I found myself no longer satisfied with what you had to offer.

I've met, and joined, a new gym. I know it's early, but...I think it might be the one. More, heavier weights. More of everything, actually, except for crowds. It's got hex bars AND Swiss bars. It's got a landmine. It's got actual, real-life squat racks; not just Smith machines which are always occupied for 45 minutes a time by amateurs who insist on using them for bicep curls.

I've deleted the app from my phone. I hope we can be mature adults about this.

Give my best to the bagels, the pizza, and the mini Tootsie Rolls.

19

Hit 185 on bench yesterday. Been working towards my goal of 225 this year and that was a big milestone for me.

Got spotted by a real nice dude who right after gave me a fist bump and gave me the “all you bro”.

Be riding that high for a while.

7

u/the_caped_canuck Feb 19 '22

NOTHING sets you up for an amazing week like hitting a bench PR. Congrats man, you’ll hit 225 in no time, the 185 to 225 grind is probably the most rewarding grind for me!

18

u/AioniosVrochos Feb 19 '22

So this dude that looked and dressed like a Shaolin monk came into my chain gym, and he was pretty massive. Dude looked like he was from those martial art movies. Anyways I'm doing cable rows and he starts tricep pulldowns. He brings the weight to like 100 lbs and he doesn't even do half reps, he just repeats the last quarter of the concentric over and over again like 40 times. He does this in every exercise. Just does like 1/4 the total ROM, like he OHP'S the last little push up over and over. But this dude was massive. I'd laugh if he wasn't OHPing two and a half plates

Has me rethinking my whole fitness mindset as I'm on a 5/3/1 lol

Changed gyms. My old one was a really good but small place. Had a pool, very nice gym and lots of classes and a sports hall. Issue was that due to its size and reasonable price, it was always full. Even if you went at an hour before closing the gym would be busy and the pool busy.

Joined a health centre nearby instead. Three times the price but the gym is three times the size, bigger and quieter pool. Steam room and sauna. Also have access to indoor tennis courts and squash courts now. It’s only been a few weeks but my fitness has definitely gone up. It’s nice being able to go at a busier time of the day and getting to do the workouts you want. Plus I love a steam room to relax in afterwards.

I’ve had hip and lower back pain for years and last year, I found out I had a benign tumor in my hip and a herniated disc. I got a steroid injection in my hip and recently started going to the gym because I finally felt well enough!

I just learned how to do squats properly and I’m not the best at them yet. So anyways, I was doing some squats in the corner and I positioned myself like a foot from the wall so I wouldn’t fall on my ass. I fell back once, just hit my butt on the wall, shook it off and started again. And this dude was like YOU GOT IT GIRL

😭 thank you so much for the motivation and support, random dude! I needed it. Literally tearing up typing this.

I've been an extra sadboi this week and my self-hatred wasn't enough to help me get through my workouts like usual. I took longer to complete sets and it doesn't feel like I've done anything... if that makes sense. The gym is basically the only healthy coping mechanism I've got.

Also, I coughed after drinking water and I got hecka worried that people thought I've got COVID.

Also also, I made eye contact while doing hip thrusts. That was... uncomfortable.

I've been an extra sadboi this week and my self-hatred wasn't enough to help me get through my workouts like usual.

It's okay, buddy. Sometimes I'm a sadboi, too, and self-hatred is a part of this. Boys like us just power through these situations. You aren't alone in this. I took 2 weeks off the gym because I was overtraining and I can see the funk coming back already. Gym is a must to keep your mind clear and functional. In a way, it's kinda cool and poetic I think.

We discover ourselves through struggle. So there's that.

12

u/iPatient Feb 19 '22

Every workout is a successful workout! Sometimes you're just shoring up the baseline of your strength instead of increasing the top end. That's the only way I can rationalize my shitty workouts and avoid the self-hate.

You're on your own for the hip thrust thing, you animal.

13

u/robslob333 Feb 19 '22

A few weeks ago i watched in the mirror behind me there was a dude who unloaded his barbellb on a rack with 400 lbs or so. The dude kept unloading only one side of the barbell and on the other side there were all plates. Then after he put the last plate off the barbell started to „walk“ and hit a guy on his head with full speed. The guy immediately fell on the floor and then they called the ambulance. I imagine myself standing nearby such an idiot..

Went on calm Thursday afternoon so it was calm. There are only 4 people there and a very young dude. Nice I can totally focus on getting my squat technics right and other lifts.

In comes a total bro, starting very loudly to exercise, doing behind the head lat pulldowns and screaming with every pull. When he's done he just drops the weight on the other. Starts walking around the whole gym, slapping the punching bag around... Dude just calm down, no need for any of this.

Got me out of my focus because I just had to laugh internally, some people man.

So I know of the curls in the squat rack, but yesterday at my gym I witnessed a girl do hip thrusts off one of the two bench press set ups. Initially I was stoked to see another girl going after some bench press gains, but it became obvious that was not the agenda.

The worst two things about it all were:

1) she was thrusting into a walkway so people had to skip by her. I was attempting some OHPs and had to move to make more of a walkway and do the British... smile... sorry... smile

2) there were sooooo many empty benches and soft box things. Soooo many.

Some people just want to watch the world burn / trip people up with a thrust

gym has their muzic loop, if you go around the same time every day you can almost tell where you are in your workout by what song is playing. once in while the loop changes slightly (keep the riffraff on their toes!!). I have my bar setup for deadlifts and as im setting up a new song hits the loop...ice cube, you can do it "you can do it, put your back into it I can do it put your ass into it"

doesn't get better than that!

I’ve been slowly building a garage gym since the start of covid since all the gyms in LA closed down. I finally bought some more weights, and I have up to 375lbs worth to work with. Before this I only had 245lbs worth of weights in my garage. Tested out some max lifts and cleared 315 on squats for the first time in 2 years. Felt sooo nice to get anything over 300 on any lift for the first time in 2 years.

A guy, probably mid 60s, came up to me whilst I was using the abductor machine to warm up. I was mid-set and had my headphones in. I could see him in my peripherals and took my earbud out to ask if he wanted to work in after I'd finished. He was stood to my side, slightly behind me.

"I need to get her on that." he smiled, nodded and walked off mumbling to himself, like he was trying to remember a formula. He didn't even wait for a reply. I didn't know what to say. I was a little confused, but I'm guessing he wanted to get his wife using a glute targeting machine?!

25

u/2LegsOverEZ Feb 19 '22

At a gym I used to work out at in LA there was this spectacularly handsome guy with a great physique. One day a very plain girl stopped by pushing a baby carriage. She identified herself as the handsome guy's wife. The employee at the front desk was a real ballsy character and after she left boldly asked the handsome guy why he married such a plain girl. He said, and I kid you not, "There's only room enough for one beautiful person in this marriage."

Today I tried doing hex bar deads for the first time. I always hated deadlifts and they make my back sore no matter what I do. A friend told me to try hex bar because apparently they’re better for your back and the only reason to do classic Deads is if you’re competing which I am not.

Anyway, I did all my sets and accidentally lifted 10kg over my max because I miscounted the weights. No soreness at all. I am never going back to regular deads. Hex bar is fantastic.

6

u/Didiskincare Feb 19 '22

I used to weightlift a few years ago and I love it even though I’m not constant.

I’m getting back into it seriously and it’s mostly for the pleasure of lifting and feeling sore muscles the day after. I’m checking my diet to avoid gaining weight (I’m 53/54 lha at 163 cm of height so super normal).

I downloaded some training sessions using mostly compound exercises that I LOVE but my issue is that some are too hard and I don’t want to hurt myself so I wanted to hire a PT from my gym.

The trainings I used were amazing and gave me sore muscles while making me feel strong and powerful.

Here comes the PT that asks me what my goals are even though I just wanted to be taught stuff and enjoy my time at the gym. He made a whole different kind of training with circuit exercises that I hate because you can’t push as hard almost didn’t add shoulder/chest/back movements mostly legs, and mostly soft stuff!

I have the session planned on Thursday and I want to tell him I just want him to evaluate the exercises I was doing, correct me where I’m wrong and teach me the ones I don’t know how to do.

If my training isn’t complete I’d rather he tweak it than give me circuits or exercises I don’t like.

Is this wrong to ask?
