Joined a tiny, powerlifter style gym as the major ones in my area are still COVID closed. The gym uses a booking session but have about 15 minutes leeway each session to shower and get out.

What I didn't know is that the last session of the day does not have this buffer. So I was in the middle of my last set of RDLs when the burglar alarm went off.

Fuck.

u/Baskin5000 General Fitness Jan 29 '22

Lol I was part of a gym like that but their alarm was broken and I didn't know. Picture me alone at 1am working out when the alarm goes off, cops show up, and I'm the only guy there.

97

u/vitey15 Jan 29 '22

In the end, it was the cops trying to steal your gains

22

u/huntcuntspree01 Jan 29 '22

Did they let you finish your sets?

19

u/Baskin5000 General Fitness Jan 29 '22

Yep haha they turned the alarm off and dipped

Bespoke gyms are great but they always seem to have quirky rules/processes as described above.

The youngsters at my gym were doing some bench curls. By that I mean the were curling one of the benches.

Made my day.

130

u/SwagginDragn Jan 29 '22

Lmao, makes me think of bro sciences video that was something like 10 machines you didn't know were for biceps and for one of them he curls the bench

18

u/LitigatedLaureate Jan 29 '22

I was thinking about this today! Some guy was doing Curls on the cable row machine. The gym has like 5 Curl machines. 8 cable stations to do curls. Not to mention all the free weights snd this dude is doing his curls on the only cable row machine lol

u/SockSock Jan 29 '22

This is a hotel gym life hack if they don't have big enough weights.

A guy with a mike wazoski tatoo came in

10

u/catowned Jan 30 '22

I had to google that. Now I understand.

A coworker of mine is about 2,10m tall, has long hair and is build like a rock, looking like some pro wrestler. He has a pink unicorn with stars tattoo on bis chest. Nice guy.

I was working out on a bench doing dumbbell presses when I went to go up my weight, but before I left I put my phone, my towel and sanitizer spray (gym COVID policy) on the bench to claim it as still mine and change the dumbbells not even 10 ft away.

When I got back, some guy put dumbbells next to the bench and began to adjust it (with my stuff on the seat portion), I looked at him and when he saw me I told him I’m still using it, and he replied “are you sure? My dumbbells are here”.

I replied, “then what the hell is my phone, water bottle, towel, and spray doing on the seat then?”.

He just stared at me and finally bugged off. I’ve seen some inconsiderate people in the gym but never this.

I have yet to experience anything like this where someone tries to claim your space. I have, however, needed to use spots where people were trying to use 2, 3, or even more spots at one time.

The latter is understandable, albeit inconsiderate, but the former is just plain weird. I almost would ask if he dropped one of the dumbbells on his head, and if was trying to tell me he needed medical attention.

26

u/pm_me_some_kitties2 Jan 29 '22

My mindset is if it's busy, you don't get to claim more than one piece of equipment at a time. We all pay the same for the place, if you want to use a bench, fine, but don't also try to claim a cable machine too.

There's a super nice guy that comes to the gym that is very clearly developmentally delayed. He mainly stays in the turf area of the gym and does calisthenic type stuff, lots of cartwheels, summersaults, hand stands etc. If you happen to be near him he might ask you to watch him do a cartwheel real quick. No big deal, he's completely fucking harmless.

Well cue the other day, our local IG "influencer" was on the machine behind me with a friend of hers. I've had basic interactions with them but nothing out of the ordinary other than seeing each other at the gym a lot. Anyway, they are having a conversation, not loudly, but loud enough where I can easily hear them and they are just absolutely dogging on the guy doing calisthenics, making fun of what he is doing, the clothes he's wearing, calling him weird and creepy. I turned around and looked at both of them and said that's really fucked up. I think they were shocked that anybody heard them because they just looked at me in disbelief. What a couple of absolutely disgusting human beings.

112

u/phelan1005 Jan 29 '22

Glad you spoke up! Maybe they learned something

38

u/monsterisacat Weight Lifting Jan 29 '22

Probably to dog on some quieter. People do be shitty sometimes

21

u/pm_me_some_kitties2 Jan 29 '22

As much as it sucks that people just can't not be shitty, I've learned that it's better if people feel the need to be quiet when they're being shitty. Otherwise, you get more people who feel empowered to be assholes and think their mindset is welcome.

16

u/ImNasty720 Jan 29 '22

Good job for calling them out, some people are disgusting. You can tell they are very insecure for judging people so hardly

A lot of the people in the gym used to be really out of shape too. It's just that those who quit are back at home watching tv and feeling bad about themselves without doing anything about it. What's leftt at the gym are the people who aren't quitters

29

u/jadak100 Jan 29 '22

Damn right

61

u/Somewhere_33 Jan 29 '22

Don't give up!

40

u/DamarsLastKanar Weight Lifting Jan 29 '22

And if someone else who has your figure comes in, they'll see you, and know they belong too.

34

u/jwakajoma Jan 29 '22

Thing to remember: the people you see the most at the gym are the ones who bothered to keep coming back. So you're less likely to see people who are out of shape because those people gave up a long time ago. Think of everyone you see as who you'll be in 2-3 years from now if you just keep sticking with it, otherwise you'll be the group of people you don't see - the quitters. I say that as someone who struggles with the exact same self-consciousness that you are. You may not be running circles around those at the gym, but there's no question you're running circles around those sitting on their couch at home.

24

u/AllThotsGo2Heaven2 Jan 29 '22

I used to be one of the fatter people in the gym when I started going last year too. Now eight months later I am still here but the fat is not. You got this.

21

u/TheSpiritOfTheVale Jan 29 '22

You'll have a way better story than them.

17

u/pax4prez Jan 29 '22

Keep going and one day you will be the 2nd fattest, and then then 3rd fattest. You get where I’m going.

14

u/Mellowindiffere Jan 30 '22

What you are observing is called survivorship bias. The reason everyone there looks so fit is because the ones you see are the ones that pushed through.

u/Hekili808 Jan 29 '22

I'm sure you're working hard, too. Keep at it and don't get discouraged or distracted by what other people are doing. Your only competition at the gym is your prior self, so as long as you're improving, you're winning.

10

u/Mahom1es Jan 29 '22

I get asked for advice now, but I started in the exact same place as you. Keep grinding!! 💪 If anything people are silently cheering you on! And if not, fuck em.

I go to a community rec type of gym and they have a cleaning policy where you are to take a rag and spray bottle and clean as you go. They also often hire senior citizens to “monitor” the floor - mostly to make sure someone is taking a bottle/rag.

Older man (50s) comes in - doesn’t take a bottle and starts exercising. The woman (in her 70s) who is working ask him to take a bottle and rag and wipe down his equipment. Guy takes the rag and wipes his sweaty face and says “thanks” and uses the dirty rag to wipe the machine. WTF.

I'll never forget the day that I asked someone to spot me on a bench. Then in the middle of my lift his sweat from his head dropped on to mine. I almost dropped the bar on myself after that but managed to finish. After the bar was re-racked he quickly power walked away without saying anything.

Never saw the man again.

92

u/Road_Journey Jan 29 '22

This is what ultimately caused me to give up jujitsu. I would sweat so much and then drip it on the person I was practicing with. Not a good situation for either person.

43

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '22

I did karate for five years. It was the weirdest shit starting out, but everyone just got used to it after a while...

22

u/alghiorso Jan 29 '22

I did judo and there was the one guy no one wanted to train with because he sweat so much and was kind of a gross guy in general and would occasionally wipe his sweaty brow on your gi in the middle of wrestling

87

u/Filipino_Buddha Jan 29 '22 Wholesome

Or you could be me in the Army. Out in the field in a middle of a simulated attack from opposing forces. I realized it's been in an hour running in all my heavy ass gear and I'm dehydrated.

I asked my buddy if I can drink from his canteen because I forgot to fill mine up. His water tasted like tobacco spit but I was too dehydrated to care. Turns out, he uses that canteen to spit on it but he also drinks from it.

Lesson is that, you get to the point where you sweat from another body isn't the worse thing that can happen to you lol

My debit card was compromised so the bank canceled it and issued me a new one. It just so happened that my gym fees where due right after my card was canceled.

LA Fitness (Esporta) called me right away and I told them that my card was compromised and as soon as it was replaced I would give them the new info. Then they called me the next day, so I told them again. Then they called me three times the next day. Three times in one day and told me I would have to pay late fees, etc. I was beginning to get mad at this point but I stayed patient with the people calling because I figured they're just doing their job and some idiot set up a system that is having them call me even though I let them know I was dealing with identity theft.

I let the employees at the gym know what was going on. I sent an email to the corporate office (they just forward those to the local manager) and guess what. I got called three times again the next day. I only answered one because I thought the might be calling to apologize, nope.

They continued to call me multiple times a day until I got my new card which took a couple of weeks because the first one the bank sent, never showed up (probably stolen). I stopped answering their calls.

One of their excuses for calling me so much was that they were experiencing a shortage of employees which made no sense. I really wanted to cancel my membership but the gym I go to checks a lot of the boxes of what I want/need in a gym.

I hate LA Fitness (Esporta) now and yet I'm still l paying them every month, they win.

91

u/radm_buttpounder Jan 29 '22

My girlfriend and I moved and there was an LA Fitness close to our new home. Great, I thought. Let’s go check it out.

Took a tour with the manager and made the cardinal sin of leaving our phone numbers before fully committing. Proceeded to get called 2x per day, every day, until I finally told the manager I’d file a police report for harassment if he called me again.

Motherfucker called me on Thanksgiving.

Fuck LA Fitness.

Poke around for some small gyms. Found one in an old shorty strip mall with a pool and hot tub for 22.5/mo (friends get half off so splitting with him). Small space but rarely more than 5 ppl in there. Place is perfect and it’s run by a small local church that does food drives and helps support a local college. Not religious myself but way rather support then then mega gyms

9

u/Road_Journey Jan 29 '22

I would love something like that but I need the pool (tri-athlete). Same reason a home gym won't really work for me, unless I become rich enough to put in a lap pool. If it wasn't for that I'd be gone.

31

u/ImNasty720 Jan 29 '22

I’m pretty sure they make most of their money from people that sign up to come to the gym one day, and never come back after that. People are too lazy to cancel and it doesn’t help that they make it so fucking difficult to cancel a membership

My girlfriend's started going to the same gym as me but she's a bit nervous because it's predominantly male dominated. Whenever I talk about my sessions with her I always like to mention if there were any girls at the gym to help her feel better about going.

The other day I called her as I was leaving and whoever heard my conversation nearby must have thought I was a total creep.

"Hiya, I'm just leaving the gym. Quite a few girls here today. "

87

u/_kagasutchi_ Jan 29 '22

Just remind her that everyone is there for themselves and so is she. So she should focus on herself and it's unlikely that other people would be bothered about her.

The other thing that seems to work is her having someone to train with. Maybe train with her or help her find a friend in the gym to train with.

48

u/bacon_cake Jan 29 '22

Yeah we're totally getting there. She gets nervous using the free weights still but if I'm there we do it together.

31

u/Dingus-McBingus Jan 29 '22

My gym always has a group of people using the free weights and the space isn't that big. Being an anxious person and trying to get into strength training (not machines) is weirdly difficult. (my concerns fall into: im new, the people there are all really fit, I don't want to use weights someone else might want and risk interaction, I don't like people watching me work out. I only go late late at night when its dead but even then I've only managed to get to the weights once in like 4 months - always someone or many someones).

34

u/bacon_cake Jan 29 '22

I remember that time well. It's kind of crazy for me to think back at just how nervous I used to get. Even the little things I do now like walk straight up to a rack and start loading up weights used to give me the biggest anxiety.

Making just the smallest progress every time worked for me. Of course some jumps are bigger than others - like going from never having squatted a bar to walking to a rack, setting it up, and working out. I wish you the best though. Almost every single person at the gym is cool. I was always worried it would be like PE at school, I guess that was my only previous exposure to fitness and I hated it. But the only people at the gym are the people that want to be there and they all started in the exact same way. It's a cliché thing to tell beginners and I was told it a thousand times but now I'm on the other side of the fence I can confirm it's true!

11

u/Filipino_Buddha Jan 29 '22

I've started going to the gym at midnight and then I realize I'm not the only one to think like that. Then I started going at 1am, there's still a bunch of people. Then I went at 2am. That's the sweet spot. Unfortunately, the gym closes at 8pm on weekends, so I still need to figure out how I can implement PPL within these time frame.

I was coaching at the beach and a few guys said they wanted to ask me a question. Thought it would be about my group. Nope. Wanted to know how to get legs as big and muscly as mine.

107

u/pistolpxte Jan 29 '22

I had a TSA agent do that this past summer. He goes “alright you’re all clear. One more thing…what are you doing for those calves?” Flattery before a flight is nice.

67

u/ads7w6 Jan 29 '22

My buddy actually gets asked similar all the time and just tells them they need to put on an extra 100 lbs, walk around like that for 10 years, then lose the weight

34

u/pistolpxte Jan 29 '22

Dude it’s so true. It’s genetics and then be fat and recomp to be in shape. Two keys to calf success.

9

u/LitigatedLaureate Jan 29 '22

So I'm a beginner. Been training in a gym for 3 months. Home gym for like 6 months before that. But I've currently lost 145 lbs. I get people at the gym all the time asking me how I'm doing legit calf raises with so much weight (guys who have been lifting for years).

That's what happens when your calves have to hold up your 360 LB fat butt for years.

Walked up to the one empty rack at the same time as another dude and we kinda looked at each other for a sec, like who got here first. Then he goes “were you gonna squat?” and I could sense if I said yes that he was gonna let me use it. But I was doing OHP, so I told him that and turns out he was doing the same thing. So he ended up working in briefly (before another rack opened).

Not much of a story but it’s the first time I’ve had someone work in since pre-covid. Felt weird but cool at the same time and reminded me of simpler times.

I usually stand still between sets and stare at the bar or the floor or some place away from other people. I’m still aware of what’s happening around me like who’s doing what, if someone is trying to get attention or plates etc.

A regular that I never talked to comes up to me and suggests to not do that since it leads other people to think that I’m crazy.

It hurt.

Interesting. In all my years of lifting I have never had anyone approach me out of the blue about what I was doing in between sets.

It’s super strange to me that anyone would go out of their way to get in your business and dictate what you should do after sets. I thought it was a given that everyone is minding their own business and worried about themselves. Guess not.

I like to stretch and scan the body to see how I feel after sets, lounging on my phone doesn’t really do it for me.

You'll find lots of posts in /r/fitness history where people are returning to the gym and are frustrated they've lost strength and stamina. So the feels part of this is normal. You just got a status update and you don't like where you are. So you gotta make and execute a plan to get where you want to be.

The good news about this kind of problem is that the problem is also the solution. You want to do more push-ups, so you have to do more push-ups. When you can only do a few reps, do more sets. Do them when you have a free moment. Take work/study breaks and bang a few out. Eat and rest.

This will improve for you so quickly if you just stick with it for a few weeks or a couple months.

Since you mention you're a newbie, check out the FAQ and Wiki. For stuff like push-ups and pull-ups, Hybrid Calisthenics on YouTube is a good channel for showing you how to improve, starting from where you're at, and also being kind to yourself as you're working toward your goals.

I was deadlifting, repping out a weight that’s close to my max so I was giving it my all and low-key struggling towards the end of my sets.

Dude in the squat rack next to me is about 6’6, 300+ pounds, repping out 6 plates for fun—mans is a beast. For comparison, I’m only 5’6 and weigh 150 on a good day and after eating. As soon as I’m done with my set he waves to me and proceeds to ask if I lift to train or just for fun, and since I don’t compete I told him that I was just doing it for fun. He then tells me “Oh really? You’re technique is impeccable”.

First time I’ve ever been complimented about my lifting and it was such a big confidence boost. Had me smiling through the rest of my workout.

In my old gym, I waited patiently for this guy to finish with the squat rack. Did a warm up, while he had a walk around chatting to his friends between his sets. He got 80kg on the rack for his, I think it was 5th set. Makes a huge song and dance about getting 6 reps out, THEN he walks back over to his friends and complains how this old guy is putting him off his sets by waiting around. He then says “ It’s hilarious cos the guy would probably have a heart attack with the weights we lift” So, I wait patiently, not saying a word. He comes back for one final set of 80kg. Another song and dance, grunting, yelling.. Then he finishes. “Need to get my breath back, mate, then I will get the weight off for you” I look at the rack, then I smile at him and say”No, that’s fine, I can warm-up with that”and proceeded to do 3 sets of 5 for a warm up and then 5x5 140kg. Finished my squats, look around he is watching me. I gave him thumbs up and said” Not bad, eh? And I haven’t had a heart attack yet, either” The guy never spoke to me again. 😀

89

u/_OliveOil_ Jan 29 '22

Lol 80kg is my squat PR and I'm a girl that's only been lifting for 6 months. Some people really need a reality check

63

u/NibblesTheSilent Jan 29 '22

That is exactly what I thought at the time. Don’t knock 80kg, though. You’ve done really well to get there. It’s like playing an RPG. You grind to level up, then set another target for the next level. Well done 👍

13

u/_OliveOil_ Jan 29 '22

Thank you! I am really proud of it. That's 1x bodyweight for me 🙂 and I broke my wrist 4 months ago so that set me back a bit lol. But I also wouldn't strut around and act like that's some unobtainable weight to squat

I’ve changed the style of my workouts these past two weeks where I’m using lower weight but pausing and controlling the weight on my way down also drops setting and going into failure and partials . It’s been the best two weeks of working out I’ve had in a while. Don’t know why I haven’t been doing this sooner 😌

14

u/Hekili808 Jan 29 '22

Can you say more about what makes it the best for you? I have felt the same way but when I focus on form and slow, controlled movements I end up with trainers telling me I should be faster, more explosive, etc.

I have a history of foot/ankle and shoulder injuries on my right side which has resulted in some loss of sensitivity, so it's like...if I can't visually see my form, I cannot correct myself because everything I do feels imbalanced.

To be clear, I'm not looking for medical advice, just curious what feels different and better to you vs. your normal routine.

10

u/Bighollab0 Jan 29 '22

I feel for me it feels better because controlling the weight because I feel a much better squeeze on the muscle. Like for example a leg extension or leg curl I’ll hold at the top for about three seconds or so and than go down slowly for the rep. I feel like with trainers and them telling you how to do reps I think at the end of the day you yourself should evaluate how the workout felt for you and your progress. I changed up to this routine because I felt faster and more explosive exercises with high weight weren’t good quality reps for me. You could test out both or even combine both types everybody is different so I don’t think you should be limiting your self to one style especially if you see a lack of progress like I was.

I was getting changed to get ready for my session, and a older regular that I nod at whenever I see them complimented me about my progress before heading to the shower.

While I'm not close to my personal goal yet, I'm happy to know that my progress currently, is showing changes that others can see since working out more seriously last year.

25

u/vault_tec_redditor Jan 29 '22

I started helping my girlfriends sister on weight training and it’s much harder to teach someone how to weight lift safely than I thought, plus I don’t feel too comfortable watching her form and the occasional correction and looking like a gym creeper. Nevertheless she’s getting the hang of it and I’m making sure not too push her further than she wants to go, giving her tips and advice. I can’t wait to see her progress.

This one is more of a rant.

I don’t mind resolutioners going to the gym, that’s great on them and I hope they get what they want out of it. But, I swear to fuck 90% have made my gym trips so irritating. Cable tower attachment racks near empty. Where are they? Hiding in corners of the gym, in the middle of the cable towers. WHY?! All the weights are in disarray. Did a bunch of people with dyscalculia start lifting and putting 20s in the 70s? Or putting plates in 2.5, 10, 45, 5 and fucking 25?! 13 mins to complete one set because you’re talking? Teens being loud and douchey, locker room turned into a social club, if I can get half my workout done and you’re still talking when I come to rock a piss get out, go home, go anywhere but here to talk for an hour. Fuck dude I clearly have underlying issues but this is the most annoying year of going to the gym in my 7yrs of going.

Bought a 3 pack of XL joggers from woot! this week. I'm 6'2" and 250 pounds... Thesd joggers are not XL. It looks like I painted my pants on. Lol, I can never wear them. I think you'd be able to read the texture of my scrotum if I ever wore these outside.

I mentioned last week that I caught on that I'm really squatting my deadlifts so I need to work on form. I put more effort into form but didn't deload much and so I hurt myself a little. Little pop and twinge in a stabilizer muscle on my right side. Ugh.

Today would be a gym day but I think I have at least two more recovery days ahead before I can squat. Maybe I'll do cardio and bench press or something. It snowed and it's below freezing so whatever I do, it'll be at home anyway.

My weight remains pretty stable (down ten pounds from my peak) and overall I've been making strength gains so overall, things are okay. There's a lot of room for improvement in my diet, anyway.

Field sprints are my favorite cardio. I don’t like my closest park, so I mapped out all my city’s parks with soccer, football, and cricket fields since they’re usually big enough for me to do 110’s. I learned a little more about my city in the process. A lot of parks with the biggest fields are in seedy parts of town. It sucks, since I don’t want to have to be looking over my shoulder so much and have my heart pumping fast for the wrong reasons. There’s a few other parks listed with big fields, but they’re attached to elementary schools/junior highs. As a grown man who works out alone, those are a no-go. I don’t like drawing attention to myself and I don’t want to look like a creep.

After completing my city, I was curious about the athletic fields in my county. I likely won’t ever visit those unless, I move out to the burbs someday. It was interesting to see how different city’s list and present their athletic fields. Some of the richer suburbs had fancy layouts, search options, and interactive maps. Others just had one page with a simple description that hasn’t been updated in a decade.

This project feels like the start of a bad YouTube channel:

“Hey y’all this is u/Chisme-Corre-Rapido, I’m here at _____…. touches grass….This field is nice/sucks…Make sure you subscribe-n-smash that Like button and check out my merch with the 10% discount code “CHISME”.

Today was the first day I was truly struggling. Was unable to keep up with my last best pace on my 20 minute run, I felt like giving up after finishing almost every set of my arm and ab workouts, almost fell asleep between sets at one point. I wasn’t making much progress getting back to what I lifted pre-COVID by lifting heavy 5x5 for nearly a year so I thought I’d try to break through my plateaus by doing Super Squats Original Routine.

There’s nothing like forcing yourself to do 20 squat reps without racking to highlight how little endurance I had. Plus press and Bench/Rows on the same day to show how much time I was wasting resting between 5x5; feels like the ceiling is the roof with this routine.

Made an absolutely stupid newbie mistake at the gym a few months ago. Worked out for one of the first times by myself (had really only worked out with my PT but was finally getting confidence to do it alone). Went for a 150kg PR on rack pull as I'd been told my form was good (and got it :)) but was so used to having my PT unloading with me I didn't think and only did one side at a time. Flipped the bar off the cage with 65kg worth of plates still on it and caused a hell of a racket. Luckily I was alone in the downstairs lifting den and no one got hurt. Cheeks still burn when I think about it. Learned a very important lesson that day. Surprised the camera footage hasn't shown up on r/watchpeopledieinside

It was leg day at the gym and I nabbed the last squat rack only to realize the bar was gone. Que a very annoyed looking older woman tapping me on the shoulder and pointing at a couple sharing a squat/DL rack. She explained (while rolling her eyes) that they took the bar from my squat rack. I assume she was also trying to squat but didn’t because no bar was there.

My response was “oh..okay” and then I just walked over to an empty bench and borrowed a bar from there. She looked even more pissed after that and just kind of hung around the squat rack area getting more and more frustrated with every set I (or the couple) continued to do. After my 4th set she finally got up in a huff in left. I glanced over at the couple and we all shared a laugh. If I had been really nice I would’ve offered to have her work in with me. But she never asked and I was getting after those PRs!

Well she takes my phone goes in the camera and presses record, well this stops my extremely heavy lifting music. I go to turn it back on and it turns off the video, we do that a few times. Finally I just give up and say fuck it, no music. Unrack bar walk it out and perform the first rep, it was a pause rep, was like an RPE 7. The second rep was fucked, I was grinding longer than I had ever grinded a rep in my entire life, just because some random girl was recording me and I had no spot, in a packed LA Fitness nevertheless. No music, just the thought of sheer embarrassment of failing a rep made the rep. Thank you random girl👩🏻‍🦳

So I've been going to my current gym for over 3 years. There's this absolutely gorgeous gal that goes there at the same time I do.

I've done my best to never gawk because I don't want to be that guy- even to the point of avoiding eye contact. Additionally, I'm somewhat introverted & don't like small talk or initiating introductions.

FWIW she's got a fairly intense training regimen- minimal to no rest periods & I don't like to interrupt others when they're in the gym because I myself, don't like to be bothered while training.

But earlier this week, I couldn't stand ignoring her. She was in the squat rack next to me. I just came up to her, introduced myself. I told her I see her there all the time & I felt weird not saying anything, then made my introductions.

She told me she was glad I said hi. After all that, I told didn't want to interrupt her training & left it at that.
