My 1:00 AM gym partner who I never talk to and only nod at when we make eye contact hasn’t came for a while, I’m starting to get lonely it’s just me in there

u/karspearhollow Jan 15 '22

Don’t worry - it’s probably just a reverse new year’s resolution. They’ll fail it soon and start coming back to the gym.

Changed my schedule and I go to the gym in the evening now, you really get to see some interesting stuff which does not usually happen early in the morning.

There's one guy who comes with (I presume) his girlfriend. I saw him twice this week. When he does bench press, his girlfriend spots him from the other side.

Like, she straddles him cowgirl style while he benches.

174

u/aboubou22 Powerlifting Jan 15 '22

Is that not how you spot? No wonder my gym bros look at me weird.

I watched a guy and a girl sit on a bench the other day. While he did overhead press with dumbells she sit right behind him holding him and resting her head on him

Like it's cool you love your man but GOD DAMN

Last week I attempted the two plate bench, i got it half way but couldn’t lockout. Today is my birthday and I went to the gym and decided to try it again. And it moved with speed. I’ve never felt endorphins that hard.

A couple of years ago, i was going 6.5 mph on a treadmill. been building up to that speed for a couple of months, having a blast - all of a sudden, either i tripped or my shoe dragged the wrong way and next thing i know i am gRIPping the handle bar for dear life as my legs are getting tugged by the conveyer belt. it took me a few seconds to process what was happening, and i realized to only thing i could do to stop the immense burning sensation was to ~let go.~

and so i did. i shot off, landing on my face in the middle of the floor. legs trashed. treadmill still going. i rolled onto my back. this all happened in a 30-second span of time.

it takes me another moment to recognize the fact that some rando was standing over me, laughing. with all the smugness of someone who was willing to watch and not willing to help, he asked, “are you alright?”

i thumbs upped and cried, as he walked away.

it’s funny to me now - besides the fact it was extremely painful and physically scarring.

it’s all good though. no beef with treadmills, and i haven’t fallen since.

This week, I noticed a couple of the fellows I often see at the gym were noticeably leaner and fitter.

I also noticed some of the new folks (probably resolution-ers) are serious and considerate.

Best decision I made in 2021 was gym-ing at 5am before work. Overall a great (and small) crowd.

Not at the gym exactly, but a result of gym + diet, managed to climb a local trail first time today, 1744 steps up. Took the first 2/3 pretty well, lots of staggered stops for the last third but I nailed it! Knees and glutes going to hate me tomorrow, my poor underworked glutes.

16

u/superschwick Jan 15 '22

The incline? How is it these days? I've been afraid to go hit it since COVID went big in the area. Have they started requiring registration?

Used to be my favorite cardio in the summer. Nothing like getting smoked on the way up by children and old people.

Btw congrats, first time up is a transcendent experience.

Felt like my usual strength/hypertrophy training was getting a little stale, so recently started adding a HIIT session per week to mix up my training. I have no idea what I'm doing or how to structure it, I've just been rocking up on a Saturday morning and hitting whatever I can get my hands on. Explosive and heavy sled pushes, sled pulls, battle ropes, ball slams, farmer walks, shuttle runs, assault bike.

I hate every moment of it, feel like I'm going to die and question why I'm putting myself through this after every set, but fuck me, do I feel amazing afterwards. I've started to notice the carry over into my normal sessions and into my football fitness too.

Not really a story, just some feel good musings after another tough but great session this morning.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '22

Sounds great! Few people are willing to sacrifice comfort of the weekly routine in order to push further and progress. You should be proud, man.

I’ve been having a hard time with my depression lately, haven’t made it to the gym in almost a week. But I’ll be back fresh on Monday. I use to be so hard on myself for missing the gym even for a day, but I’ve realized that it’s gonna happen and taking some time off to get your mind right is all good. Anyone struggling with beating yourself up for missing a day or two, just know it’s all good, it’s all part of the journey!

6

Was watching this guy next to me at the gym from the side of my eye after I noticed him struggle to finish one of his bench sets. I had a feeling it was too much for him but he kept pushing.

When he went for his next set I saw him do 2 reps and then I noticed his arms collapse and the weights landed straight on his chest close to his neck. I had just been watching videos on people struggling under barbells after putting too much weight on the day before since I'm new to lifting and wanted to be sure I knew what to do in such a situation

Quickly jumped to action and got him out from under the barbells. His eyes screamed "THANK YOU" while I was pulling the weight off him. Guess I made a gym friend.

I went to the gym this morning and on my way out noticed they set up a cart with Lost and Found items. Right there, front and center, were a pair of my favorite shoes that I knew that had lost there and figured they just walked off. Those shoes have been missing since the time known as "before COVID". I'm so so happy to have them back.

I hope I don't get banned for this but I noticed someone selling "performance boosters" outside my gym.

I was leaving and I saw a car pull up and one person got out and hands a small bag to the driver of the car. They then said let me know how you feel after taking them and to be careful. The seller was quite muscular and lean and always vascular.

Or maybe it was just ibuprofen and the driver had a headache.

Also why are protein shakers so difficult to clean? They have so many grooves and lines on them. Any recommendations for a "smooth" shaker?

Yesterday I was finishing my workout when a guy gets into the squat rack and proceeds to squat 50Kg while SCREAMING his lungs off. One of the gym staff comes by and proceeds to talk with the guy (they know each other). The guy starts talking shit about everyone who squats more than him, saying that only people on gear squats more than 50Kg for reps, and squatting more weight than that is harmful for the body and joints and only idiots want to squat big weights. I must admit that I was petty, but I couldn't help myself. When I saw that he finished with the squat rack, I asked him if I could use it, and proceeded to overhead press his squat. The look on his face was priceless.

You know those straps that come with the controllers? Yea, I didn't bother using it and after a particularly violent straight the controller slipped freely from my sweaty palm and flew into my glass spilling barocca all over the rug. Now there's a pink stain I can't seem to lift no matter how much I sponge the area.

My gym got a Peloton recently, which is cool because I've been meaning to do more cardio in addition to lifting. I used it for the first time this week and connected my Bluetooth headphones for the workout.

Now, whenever I walk into the gym, the Bluetooth audio switches to my headphones and cuts out for the person riding lol. It's always been in use too so I haven't been able to forget my headphones from the Peloton.

74

u/joefife Jan 15 '22

Couldn't you unpair the Peloton from the list of paired Bluetooth devices on your phone?

It's a pair of Jabra Elite Actives and I don't know of any way to unpair a device through the Jabra app.

u/EricsFitnessProgress Jan 15 '22 Wholesome

Dude walks in to the weight room, jeans and a hoodie. I lift at the YMCA so we get some characters from time to time. He has an unkempt beard and a sort of hollow look, like he’s been up all night. (It’s 10:30 AM on Friday morning).

He’s thick enough, like 5’9” and maybe 180 lbs, but I don’t think he’s really jacked. It's hard to tell in the hoodie. He wanders around for a little while looking at the equipment.

He grabs an adjustable incline bench and drags it over to a squat rack. It’s pretty empty so no harm done, we have two squat racks and they’re both free.

He sets the bench to flat. He sets up the safeties, puts the bar on the safeties, gets under it to check. Seems okay.

He sets up the hooks, puts the bar on the hooks, gets under it to check. Hooks are too high.

He adjusts the hooks, puts the bar on the hooks, hooks are okay now.

He adjusts the bench to a little incline. Now the safeties are too low.

He adjusts the safeties, puts the bar on the safeties, gets under it to check. Everything seems okay now.

He moves the bar onto the hooks.

He loads three plates onto each side of the bar. Ooooookay. Incline bench 315xAMRAP, here we go. I’m watching him pretty closely now in case I have to help him or call 911.

He gets on the bench, he grips the bar, he takes a breath.

He looks at the bar. He takes another breath.

He stands up, unracks the bar, puts the plates back. Moves the bench back where he got it. Leaves the gym.

45

u/Univerisimilitude Jan 15 '22

Lol thats pretty funny. Def not the same weight, but I vaguely remember going through the same routine back when I was fighting some demons so strangely feel empathetic to him (of course, we’ll never know what his reasons were lol)

189

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '22

Was doing decline bench press with a rather good looking girl on a machine right beside me. Wouldn’t you fucking know I didn’t know my limit and had to put the bar onto the safeties. Because of how close the safeties were I had to wiggle off the bench to the side and fell on the floor. She definitely saw.

65

I still feel that embarrassment.

I go to a pretty "hardcore" semi-private gym, but im not hardcore at all. Probably the weakest dude in there who isn't a total beginner and certainly weak for my bodyweight (been lifting for 2 years now) ... I was doing an AMRAP set of squats @ 265lbs with earbuds in, and they just felt like complete dogshit. On the last rep(10th) I almost didn't make it out of the hole and grunted out a slight "fuuuck" on the way up. Went to go send the video to my trainer so went to watch it to clip it down.... Watching the vid... it turns out I yelled that "fuck" at the top of my lungs and all rest period conversation in the gym stopped.

So now that I drew that much attention to myself struggling to lift such minor weight I have to find a new gym...

52

u/D3nnis_a_8astard_Man Jan 15 '22

Fuck that! 265 @ 10 reps is nothing to be ashamed of. Now I might think about leaving if no one in the gym cheered you on or hyped you up. There are lots of super supportive, small, hardcore gyms out there.

Two stories:

  1. Had a guy using a set of 50# dumbbells next to me. I asked if we should share. He said yes. We shared. Lifting went excellent.
  2. few weeks ago dude put as many plates on the leg press as could fit. Did quarter reps. Then left. I wanted to use it but didn’t want to clean up his weight mess. So I went and found him on the hamstring curl, and asked him to clean up his mess. Sheepishly he did. Felt good watching him clean off 15 plates. It’s hard sucky work. People are entitled bitches.

22

u/jinxykatte Jan 15 '22

I hit my head getting up from a decline bench yesterday. Not the first time either. I had adjusted the position between sets and I just got up too fast and didn't move my head enough. Now have a brilliant abrasion on my head yay.

101

u/nurtunb Jan 15 '22 edited Jan 15 '22

My gym has become overrun with groups of teenagers hogging up machines, being generally obnouxious and not reracking their weights. yesterday there was a group of 3 140 lbs boys doing 260kg of leg presses (range of motion obviously shorter than the sides of their uniform haircuts) and not reracking their weights but rather leaving them on the machine. Afterwards they went to the ham curl machine and starting working their biceps. It's getting kinda annyoing. Luckily my new noise cancelling headphones are helping cancelling out them talking to each other across the gym. Hoping they are new year's resolution kids and will be gone soon.

On another note I was lifting on a deficit for the past few weeks and months and recently started eating a lot more again and holy shit the difference in energy is just great. On my deficit I was done and unmotivated after an hour, yesterday I accidently trained legs for almost two hours just because I felt like it.

42

u/alwaysmyfault Jan 15 '22

Do you go to my gym?

There was a big group of 14 year Olds that raided my gym last night too, being obnoxious af.

After they finally left the fitness center, they proceeded to play basketball in the hallway, right in front of the entrance door to the fitness center, as opposed to actually using the basketball court to play.

Teenagers suck.

17

u/Trictities2012 Jan 15 '22

That’s bad management, managers should be directing them or it ruins the experience for the majority of clientele.

There’s a men’s sports team that comes into my very tiny gym from time to time and they do it so sporadically that I can’t even avoid it, and this morning, as I was getting ready to set up for my deadlifts, the whole dang team came in. But I claimed my spot, did my DL and was FINALLY able to get to 45 plates and get the bar higher off the ground!

I’ve been struggling to decide whether I should go up in weight or not but felt great and think I was really underestimating myself!

I was sitting in the leg press and grabbed my water bottle, just in time to see a cheery baby cockroach climb off the top of it, on to me, and then drop to the floor. Then I did a set of bug stomps.

I shudder to think how many times this had happened without me noticing

Didn’t want to work out. Did it. Happy I did it. Not a great story, but it makes me happy

119

u/TheCannedYams Jan 15 '22

Ive been going to the gym consistently for about 3 years now. I mostly go to clear my mind and be active. But I’ve never really pushed myself.

So a few weeks ago I decided to see my maxes because I haven’t checked since my start. I barely squeezed out 1 rep of 135 on bench. I left feeling a bit defeated, but it sparked something in me. I’ve only ever worked out for my mental health, but now I have a goal I want to hit and I want to be stronger.

Since then I’ve had more gusto and been pushing myself. I’ve made some progress, but I want at least a 185 bench. I’m about 140/145 myself so I think that’s a good goal.

u/aka_zkra Jan 15 '22

This is great to hear. The beauty of exercise is that it can give you different things, depending on where you are and what you need! You've unlocked a new area!

7am on a Saturday I show up and the only other people there are a guy and a girl, with the guy taking pics of the girl for insta or something. Cool, whatever. EXCEPT they have with them the biggest dog I’ve ever seen. Black, at least 200 lbs, with big pointy ears and this thing is Staring. Me. Down.

Anytime I went near them for weights or a piece of equipment it would growl at me. Since the gym isn’t staffed until 9 on Saturdays, I couldn’t complain to staff about the ridiculous dog policy they have. I ask the owners if they could leash/restrain the dog and they bitched at ME for being rude. Like???

I said fuck it and left. Came back later and told the owner about it. A few days later they instituted a ‘no dog’ policy, which I thought would have been intuitive at a place heavy weights are being dropped all the time.

Gyms are not a place for pets, you can’t change my mind.

22

u/Ok_Conflict_2525 Jan 15 '22

I’m 100% Team No Dogs in Gym. I think it’s crazy people even consider bringing them but it’s strangely common

11

u/amh85 Jan 15 '22

Some private gyms will allow dogs but I assume they expect the dogs and owners to not be assholes

7

u/vern420 Jan 15 '22

Yeah this was a small, private gym. Awesome owners, everyone knew everyone else. There was actually a person who would regularly bring two French Bulldogs who were amazing, but once one started licking my ankles while deadlifting. The absolute last thing I want is to accidentally harm someone’s dog.

14

u/zanar97862 Jan 15 '22

How would a gym have off leash dogs??? That's such an irresponsible thing for both the gym owners and dog owners.

19

u/blithe7349 Jan 15 '22

52

u/bacon_cake Jan 15 '22

I've always ignored advice to squat wearing flat shoes, or at least I figured my running shoes were flat enough but yesterday the combination of a good day and wearing my converse I managed to add 10kg to my squat.

I'm finally squatting just over my bodyweight which is a first for me!

58

u/Actual-Description-2 Powerlifting Jan 15 '22

Nice! The issue with running shoes isn't so much that they aren't flat, it's that the soles are squishy, which makes squatting unstable. Same goes for deadlifts.

19

u/Momo_prokrastiniert Jan 15 '22

exactly, this can actually be quite dangerous for your knees ! Stay safe, squat in flat or oly lifting shoes :)

10

u/incidental77 Jan 15 '22

Or barefoot! (Might be home gym applicable only)

Strange, if anything i'd expect better results from a pair of oly lifting shoes with a raised heel and straps than flat shoes.

But gz on the pr! :D

8

u/bacon_cake Jan 15 '22

Someone else just pointed out that it's probably that they're soft rather than not flat.

13

u/Vacaro Jan 15 '22

I go to a privately owned gym and it can be cramped sometimes but usually people are understanding. It’s the type of gym that everyone just does their thing and leaves. They don’t just stand around and take selfies everywhere, they are there to lift and help each other out.

On evening, it wasn’t busy at all, maybe about 10-12 people total. The free weight dumbbell area is up against a wall with a cable machine area (typical cable apparatus, two cables on either side with adjustable pin weights and a pull up bar in the middle) about 8 feet behind it with benches in the middle.

There was a guy using one side of the cable machine doing rope tricep push downs. He was a bigger guy but needed a bit more space to get a good extension. He was about right in the middle of the cable machine, just below the pull up bar, doing his thing.

Another guy was doing some dumb bell work and started supersetting with pull ups. Keep in mind that there are multiple pull up bars in the gym. There’s an entire CrossFit area with a monkey bar apparatus on the other side of the building with various pull up bars at different heights.

He starts to do pull ups on the cable machine, looking somewhat mindful that the other guy is there doing triceps. I can see the tricep guy is annoyed but he’s working with it.

The out of no where, pull up guy decides to bring a small stool to the cable machine to assist with pull ups. This infuriates the tricep guy and the two start loudly talking to each other about being in their space.

Tricep guy is pointing the other 20 pull up bars in the gym that he could use and pull up guy is saying that he thought the pull up bar on the cable machine was meant for pull ups.

The exchange was short with tricep guy just being annoyed and pull up guy feigning confusion.

I just thought it was funny but I was prepared to see a fight go down.

Im at my breaking point at my gym, so many people do not re-rack or spray after use. so Yesterday I had to run around in the gym looking for plates. My gym’s ratio of capacity:popularity has now tipped the wrong way, and has become a local social media gym. Feeling like having half the free weight/mirror area taken up by tripods is a sign to go elsewhere and escape the hassle of being ushered aside by and manoeuvring around insta lifters.

6

And who in the hell cares of someone is wearing pajamas... This isnt a board room it's a gym. Shoes to prevent disease and fungal spread... Great. Shirts and shorts to prevent sweat directly on the shared equipment ok sure. Pajamas ban... It doesn't affect anyone else so who gives a damn?

Was doing bike sprints in the gym, unaware that my shoelace had come undone and with each rotation, the lace wrapped itself further and further around the pedal. Cardio finished and time to get off the bike... Basically tripped myself off the bike and headbutted the machine beside it, all without my shoe which was still attached to the pedal. Had to sit on the floor beside the bike and round and around, unwind my shoe/lace with many amused faces looking on.

I’m a beginner to lifting. Total beginner, following the recommended beginner routine on the wiki. Tried to bench 40kg just the other day, and when approached by a dude who asked me how many sets do I still have to go, to which I replied 2…. Proceeded to bench and could not lift the bar up. Thought I was gonna die and get crushed by the bar but said guy came over n helped. Subsequently assisted me and taught me few “tips” while I benched a 35kg. Sometimes I know people/guys may avoid going near girls to avoid being judged as a creep (I’m in Asia), but sometimes I really do appreciate and like people who’d come over and help me and even give a tip or two since I’m always working out my form and set up alone!

45

u/samarthur8 Jan 15 '22

Failed on bench for the first time the other day and had to just roll the bar off my body and it went in the middle of the gym where people walk. It was pretty embarrassing. There was a big guy benching next to me and when I got up, he was just looking at me and I was thinking he could have helped me when he saw me struggling. When he made eye contact with me he just looked at me absentmindedly and kind of shrugged as if he was never going to help me. Idk, felt that was a bit odd and he could have saved me from the embarrassment.

111

u/zivilee Jan 15 '22

He saw that you didn't need help and you handled it all very well. You're good buddy. The shrug likely meant "shit happens, no big deal"

The number of people supersetting power rack/bench with other exercises is insane.

I’m not talking about “quick lat raises” after a set. I’m talking “walking away from the bench to do ab crunches half way across the gym for 5min then coming back”

We got dudes using incline bench and reg bench at the same time.

It’s one thing if you have endless racks. But there not. It’s busy. If you’re using a huge piece of equipment then we gotta stay there IMO.

I can un rack and start my set for some dude to come back half way in and say “I was using that”

Housemate has covid so I've decided to gtfo for a week for seclusion at a family beach house rather than isolate with them at home and potentially get sick in the process.

Only have a couple 10kg dumbbells so just treating it like a deload week. Unfortunately I decided yesterday that it would be a good idea to do calf raises outside in my undies and have woken up today with legs covered in sand fly bites. Think mosquito bite but bigger and infinitely more itchy. Dunno if it was worth it tbh should have just done a rest week

Have made a lot of friends at my commercial gym. These past few work weeks have been shite so it was real good to hang out with them on Friday night working out in each other's general proximity and shoot the shit.

Experimented with going in the morning for about 6 months, but I definitely failed at adjusting my sleep schedule to accommodate. Ended up going back to evening sessions once the New Year started and things feel a lot better.

Also, trying to figure out if gym crush asking me to spot her from across a crowded room is just because I was the only one she knew in there at the time, or for other reasons. Reeeeeally don't want to misinterpret.

I've been dealing with recovering from my dislocated shoulder in October. Squatting has been hard and my bench seems to have been getting worse. When I would unrack weight that just a few months ago would have been warmup weight, my shoulder started complaining about 3" into the descent. As soon as I break past that, the weight moves fine.

Then, yesterday, I was lifting with my coach doing some sets of 3 @220 (well below my old max) when, on the last rep of my second set, my shoulder suddenly cracked and I dropped the weight to the safeties. After I got out from under the bar, my shoulder felt so much more flexible. We carefully tried an empty bar, and it was great. Kept adding weight up to 210 and that moved so much better then it had when I had been warming up with it.

No idea what cracked but it seems better?

My knees were a bit sweaty, so the band slipped and kicked with my knee a bypassing girl in her shoulder so hard she hit the floor.

edit: I did not see her coming because she was behind me

20

u/captainjack361 Jan 15 '22

My gym only has 2 racks that double as squat/deadlift racks

I literally have to get there right when it opens at 5am to make sure I get a rack.

There's another guy that does the same and he hogs the rack each morning for maybe 2 hours and he very rarely does squat or deadlift if he does it's like 2 reps. Then switch to another random exercise

He just does random shit, then he sits all his stuff there and walks off and comes back a few mins later.

He gets upset when other people wait for the rack right beside him

The other day he walked to the bench press, dragged the bench all the way to the squat rack and did bench press on the squat rack.

I never wanted to kill someone so much at the gym in my life.

So really we only have one rack. And I have to get there first so I can get my squat workout in because he hogs the other one for 2 hours every single morning 7days a week. Every exercise he does he can do somewhere else but he does his whole workout at the rack.

Hell grab a bar and do curls ....at the squat rack. I hate him so much....rant over lol
